4.2 Guest Speakers Guest speaker Christina Batstone is looking for the students’ feedback regarding Advocacy Programs and Campaigns. Feedback questions can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BJF2JLW and attached in the meeting minutes. Feedback is always welcome, so please contact the Advocacy Office at any time in person, by phone 604456-1161 or at advocate@bcitsa.ca. Questions: Are you back next year? Yes, I have a full time job in BCITSA, so you will find me next year as well. Is there any other survey online? Yes, follow the link which will be in the minutes. 4.3 Set Rep Forum:
How often is cleaned SE1 1455? Was the Spring Break the last time it was cleaned up? Brian will investigate. When the Construction is ending in SW1? By the end of May, for the reason that offices are moving in June. Not all BCIT teachers are familiar with the technologies, if something goes wrong, they don’t know how to fix it. Sometimes they spent half of hour of the class to fix the technology problem. Do instructors have special technology classes? Yes they do, however the classes are optional. 4.4 Unfinished Business:
Printers. Brian had a meeting with IT services regarding the printers. IT services are being aware about printers’ problems in the library and in SW3. They try out best to keep these printers functional and to provide other printer locations for the students. Does everybody know where the IT services are located? Their office is near the library, SE12-205; the phone number is 604-432-8818.
Student’s complaints.
Wheelchair button is not working in SW3 third floor. Brian will investigate. The heating problems in SE12. BCIT is already aware of it and works on fixing it. How effective is the teacher’s survey? The instructor’s feedback will go to the instructor. Christina Batstone mentioned that the associate dean is the one who has the control on the employments standards. It is good to complain about any problems to the program

head or to the Associate Dean. At least they will know about it. It does make a difference. Better to present the complaints in the writing. Student association executives will have a meeting with the BCIT executives regarding different educational issues this week. Why the back door in NE1 is locked on the weekends? Chairs will investigate. NE1 computers’ have viruses. Brian will investigate. 4.5 New business

Student Engagement Survey
The Set Reps and students are invited to participate in the BCIT Survey on Student Engagement, what is an important student survey that asks the current full-time BCIT students about their academic and social engagement, and their perceptions of academic challenges, student support and learning outcomes while studying in BCIT. The results of the survey are used in the number of ways. They inform the President, Vice President, Deans, and the Program Heads, about students learning experience at BCIT, and help them take appropriate actions based on students’ feedback. All registered full time students are encouraged to participate in this survey. The

ADVOCACY PROGRAMS AND CAMPAIGNS: A RE-EVALUATION Objective
To gain significant student input in an effort to realign the Advocacy Office’s harm reduction initiatives and campaigns with the needs and wants of the student body. Background Harm Reduction Initiatives
In 2007, the BCITSA incorporated the harm reduction model into its core strategies and goals. Specifically, the Advocacy Office became responsible for providing information, programming, and services to students in such a way that empowered them to make informed decisions without the imposition of an idealistic or moral philosophy. The educational efforts, run by the Advocacy Office, were focused around five topic areas that were deemed to be of particular importance to students. They are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Alcohol Awareness Safer Sex Personal Safety Gambling ID Theft and Credit
Awareness Campaigns
The Advocacy Office is also responsible for a number of campaigns each year that have often integrated the harm reduction key messages. Most of the campaigns evolved out need to take a stand on particular issues or a need to participate in larger events of significant to the BCITSA student body. The campaigns that currently run out of the Advocacy Office are as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
The Respect Campaign (year round) International Day Against Homophobia (May 17) Zen Campaign for Mental Health (end of May) National Coming Out Day (October 11) White Rose: A Campaign for Anti-Violence (December 6)

Feedback Questions Answer these online at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BJF2JLW
1. Did you notice any of the 10 initiatives and campaigns on campus this last year?
2. Should the five topic areas for the harm reduction initiatives remain the same or be changed? Are there other topics that are important for students?
3. Should we continue with the five current campaigns? Are there campaigns we should be doing instead?
4. What is the best way for the Advocacy Office to effectively execute the initiatives and campaigns? Should we use events, online media, print campaigns, etc?
5. Any other feedback regarding the Advocacy initiatives and campaigns?
