The Accessible Washroom Project The Accessible Washroom Project (AWP) was created in response to concerns raised by several members of the BCIT community with regards to the lack of washrooms that were accessible to a certain groups, including transgendered and gender-variant people, those with young children, people with physical disabilities, and anyone with specific religious or personal needs. In order to address these concerns, a committee consisting of representatives from the BCIT Student Association, Counseling & Student Development, Harassment & Discrimination, and Facilities was formed. With the goal of improving accessibility, the committee set out to replace the signs on existing single stalled washrooms with new signs that did not include gender specification, replacing them with an image of a toilet. The new signs subtly remove the gender binary from washrooms and in doing so help to comply with BCIT’s commitment to the values of inclusivity, fairness, and the duty to accommodate. This brochure is your guide to the all the single-stalled, gender inclusive washrooms on BCIT’s Burnaby campus.
