Your studies at Burnley College - whether that’s at A Level, T Level or Vocational - will open the door to a wide range of career opportunities for you.
However, it’s important to gain as much experience of the world of work and your chosen career path too. Through work experience activities which form part of your course of study, you’ll develop an understanding of exactly what it takes to shine in the workplace and stand out from the crowd when it comes to applying for your dream career or university study.
There are many types of work experience opportunities such as:
• Placement in an industry/ workplace setting
• Work shadowing/work observation
• Guest speakers
• Conferences
• Volunteering
• Competitions and skills challenges, e.g. World Skills
• Internships
The duration of these activities can be very different. It can be anything from several weeks to simply a half dayit could be in one workplace or severalthe important fact is that you’re gaining first-hand experience in the workplace and all that that entails.

Finding your perfect Work Experience
Finding your own work experience shows initiative, confidence, communication and research skills, and it’s a great way to impress potential future employers.
Ways to secure work experience:
• Build on existing connections – parents/guardians, friends, relatives and other people in your existing network might have connections in industries and organisations that you are interested in working in.
• New connections – research thoroughly companies, employers and organisations in the industry in which you are interested and look for opportunities that they might be advertising. Alternatively, research contact details of people in the company who you can contact to introduce yourself and discuss potential work experience opportunities with.
How to contact people about work experience:
There are a number of ways you can contact organisations about work experience, e.g. professional e-mail or phone call.
Advice when contacting organisations:
• Make sure communications are professional in tone and come from an appropriate e-mail address
• Be clear in your communications, e.g. “Subject: Work Experience Request”
• Introduce yourself, explain your interest in work experience in this industry/organisation, and how it links to your future aspirations.
• Outline relevant skills or experiences that you already have or that you are looking to develop.
• Be enthusiastic and show how keen you are to get the most out of the opportunity.

We know that finding and contacting employers can have challenges or might be a new experience for you; however, we’re here to help along the way.
Contact the College’s Careers Team, or speak to your subject teachers, family and friends whenever you need help about work experience – this could be helping finding relevant opportunities, discussing who best to contact, as well as checking e-mails you plan to send, or practising conversations with employers.
