F r e q u e n t ly A s k e d Q u e s t i o n s Will my cell phone have service in Atchison? Unfortunately, not all services are alike. We’ve found that Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint get the best coverage for our area.
Is your campus wireless? Yes. All public space on campus is wireless.
Will I need money for food? The Office of Admission and Campus Dining services will provide you and your family with meals during the SOAR activities. These meals are free to students and families.

Do I register for my classes during SOAR? No, you need to complete the Freshman Course Registration Request Form prior to attending SOAR so our team of academic advisors can build your Fall 2013 class schedule. You can view information about class registration and register for your classes at www.benedictine.edu/classregistration.
Can I meet with a faculty member to discuss/change my class schedule? There will be an opportunity during the Saturday activities for students who have questions about or need to make changes to their class schedule to speak with an advisor.
Students should meet with a faculty advisor if: • You have already taken a class that appears on your schedule • You have a conflict with requirements for an athletic program • You have serious confusion regarding your class schedule
Students should not meet with a faculty advisor if: • You do not want to take early morning classes so you can sleep in • You did not get into any of your preferred classes • You did not get into a class with a specific professor
I am a parent, may I attend my student’s meeting with an advisor? The purpose of this meeting is for the student to establish a connection with a faculty advisor in a one-on-one setting. If there are specific concerns you would like to have addressed in the meeting, please discuss them with your student and have him or her be prepared beforehand.
N e w S t u d e n t F ac t s Residence Hall Staff (On Duty August 1 – May 31) A Residence Director (RD) lives in and guides the community-centered life of each hall. The Residence Assistant (RA) is a current undergraduate who aids the RD as a member of the hall staff. RAs live on each floor and are available to assist students as they adjust to college. RDs and RAs take special interest in the growth of students and coordinate activities in the hall that support the mission of the College. These activities include developing and implementing service, educational, recreational, and religious programs. The Director of Residence Life is Sean Mulcahy, 913-360-7500. P o l i c y I n f o r m at i o n Do I need a car? Cars are permitted, but aren’t essential. If you bring a car, you must apply for a parking sticker online at www.benedictine.edu after August 1, 2013.
May I have a pet? No pets other than fish are approved.
Is summer storage available? The College does not provide summer storage for domestic students; rental space is available in Atchison. Limited storage space is available for international students. For more information, call 800.467.5340 and ask for the International Programs Office.
Is there a smoking policy? Residence halls and all other College buildings are smoke free. In addition, candles, candle warmers, and incense are not permitted. Please see the more detailed smoking policy in the Student Handbook at www.benedictine.edu.
What is the policy on alcohol use? The College follows United States federal and state laws for the use of alcohol. Students under the age of 21 are not allowed to use or have alcoholic beverages in their presence. Anyone 21 or older may not consume alcohol in the presence of minors.
What appliances are NOT permitted? Safety and insurance standards place restrictions on certain appliances. Hot plates, halogen lights, grills, skillets, toaster ovens, electric heaters, electric blankets, refrigerators larger than 4 cubic ft., and gas appliances are not permitted.
What appliances ARE permitted? Stereos, TVs, microwaves, coffee pots, electric razors, fans, heating pads, and computers are allowed. Roommates may bring one refrigerator (4 cubic ft. max.) for their room. All rooms are air-conditioned. For more information, call 800.467.5340 and ask for the Student Life Office.
S e rv i c e I n f o r m at i o n What is the meal plan? All freshmen men and women are required to be on the 18-meal plan with $300 Dining Dollars per semester. Dining Dollars come pre-loaded with your meal plan and must be used by the end of each semester.
What are Raven Bucks? Raven Bucks may be added to any of the meal plans. Raven Bucks work like a convenient debit system, using your Benedictine student ID card. At any time you may deposit funds on the card (a minimum of $5 will start your account) and you can use your card at many locations across Campus. There are no fees to use Raven Bucks, and they don’t expire. To close your account, simply contact the Benedictine College Business Office for further details.
How can I use my Raven Bucks? Once you deposit funds in your personal Raven Bucks account, you can use your Benedictine ID in many ways: At all dining services on campus and most vending machines; to purchase additional printing and copying balance (“paper cut”) once your free copies are consumed; and at the Raven Store. Most important, all campus laundry machines require Raven Bucks.
How can I add to my Raven Bucks? Go to www.benedictine.edu, click on the “Add Raven Bucks” link located at the bottom of the page, and enter your account and pin number (your account number is your 6-digit School ID # and your pin is the last 4 digits of your School ID).
Where and when do I purchase my textbooks? Textbooks are purchased online and shipped directly to campus from our virtual bookstore. We no longer sell textbooks on campus. Textbooks will be available for purchase after August 1, 2013.
What laundry, vending, and recreational services are available? All laundry machines operate with Raven Bucks on your student ID. Soft drink, candy, and juice machines are in most hall lounges, along with a TV, and a kitchenette with stove, refrigerator, microwave, and sink. Other recreational areas on campus offer outdoor grills, sand volleyball, biking, hiking, racquetball, ping-pong, pool tables, track, tennis, basketball, a weight room, and a fitness center.
What health services are available? A registered nurse and physician’s assistant staff the Benedictine Student Health Center. The staff provides physicals, TB skin testing, tetanus boosters, over the counter medication, health education, medical diagnosis and treatment at no cost. After-hours care is available at the Atchison hospital, 913.367.2131. The Atchison Hospital Emergency Room is available 24 hours per day. An Athletic Trainer assists injured student-athletes in their recovery. For more information call 800.467.5340 and ask for the Student Health Center. What monetary transaction services are there? Atchison has several banks that offer financial services including “student”-priced checking accounts. We highly recommend you visit with the banks and consider establishing an account for your student; some community businesses will more quickly accept checks from students when the check is drawn on a local bank account. A UMB Bank ATM machine is located on campus in the Student Union and several others are located throughout the City of Atchison. The College Business Office issues student account bills and direct deposit for work-study payroll. The Business Office will cash personal checks for students in amounts under $50. What computer technology is available? Every residence hall room has two computer outlets that connect to the Internet through the campus network. This connection gives students unlimited access to the Internet. Students will be issued an official College email account. Email services can be accessed via any web browser or personal machine. Students must provide their own cable and are responsible for the installation and configuration of software on their personal computers. Personal computers can receive support services through the College’s IT staff. All computers are required to have current virus protection, which can be furnished through the College. There are computer labs for student use in the Library and Westerman Hall. Students are expected to adhere to the computer usage policies as published by the College. What cable and phone services are there? A cable outlet is located in each room. Students may contact a local cable company for service. A telephone outlet with local service is provided in all residence halls, except Cray Seaberg Hall and the Row Houses; bring a cell phone for long distance service. If you plan on bringing a telephone and want voice messaging services, make sure to provide your own answering machine. For more information call 800.467.5340 and ask for the Student Life Office.
What furnishings are in my room? Rooms are furnished so each student has a computer desk, chair, dresser, closet, and extra-long twin-size bed and mattress. You provide your own linens to accommodate the extra-long twin-size mattress. Furniture may not be removed from the room and the room should be in the same configuration upon your departure.
What are the window treatments in my room? Window treatments include mini-blinds so curtains are not necessary. Wall paint is a neutral color. Paint, nails, tacks, or adhesives that damage walls, woodwork, or furniture are prohibited. Command Adhesive, a 3-M product, is the College’s recommended adhesive for hanging posters and hooks on walls in most residence halls. These are not allowed in St. Scholastica Hall, Elizabeth Hall or Kremmeter, Wolf, and Legacy Apartments. Residents are held accountable for any damages done to Residence Hall rooms or furniture.
Women’s Residence Hall R o o m I n f o r m at i o n What are the room dimensions? Average sizes are as follows: Memorial Hall - 11’x14’6”, McDonald Hall - 10’x17’6”, St. Scholastica Hall - 11’4”x16’.
May I build a bunk or a loft in my room? St. Scholastica Hall and Memorial Hall each have newer custom made furniture. The beds in these halls may not be unbunked and construction of other bunks or lofts is not permitted. Bunks or lofts may be constructed in McDonald Hall according to specifications available in the Student Life Office. Students are responsible for removing bunks or lofts prior to the end of the academic year. You are required to contact the Student Life Office prior to arrival if you are planning to bring materials to bunk or loft your beds.
What about full-length mirrors? The College provides a vanity mirror and full-length mirror in each Memorial Hall, St. Scholastica Hall, and McDonald Hall room. Attachment of additional wall or door mirrors is prohibited.

Business Office o Sign the Financial Responsibility Agreement and Financial Access Form and submit to the Business Office o After July 1, set up payment plan for the fall semester or pay remaining balance in full by August 1 o Enroll in eRefund (an electronic Student Refund option). If you are anticipating a refund from your student loans and would like to have it direct-deposited to your bank account, enroll in eRefund, which is accessible through your OASIS Estimated Tuition Worksheet payment button. o Purchase Raven Bucks for the fall semester
