Global Reach

From the Vice President for Advancement, Kelly J. Vowels, ’85 On July 11th, the Feast of St. Benedict, a very special woman visited our campus. We were delighted to welcome Wanjira Mathai, the daughter of Mount St. Scholastica College alumna and Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai ’64. Five years ago the Sisters extended an invitation to Wangari to speak in celebration of their 150 years in Atchison. Unfortunately, Wangari lost her battle with lung cancer Sept. 25, 2011, and instead of cancelling the speaking engagement, Wanjira arrived in Atchison bringing her mother’s message of hope, gratitude, and love for everything Benedictine. As our Benedictine community remembered Wangari and the good work her life accomplished, we learned about her legacy, The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace & Environmental Studies, established in 2009 through the University of Nairobi. Wanjira explained the vision and strategic initiatives of the Institute; it was clear the Benedictine foundation that was laid while Wangari was receiving her education in Atchison, Kansas, threaded through her entire life. The college is still producing amazing alumni who are doing remarkable things – from those celebrating success early in their careers like Hannah Dumpert Hasselquist, ’11 (who won our 2013 Young Alumni award) at Camp Fire Girls, to San Diego businessman Frank Potenziani and his friend Tom Hoenig, ’68, who brought the Student International Business Council to Benedictine College. Find both stories in this issue of Spirit of Giving. Their Benedictine education gave them so much; they feel they have to give back. Regardless of where life has brought us, this strong Benedictine foundation is something all alumni of Benedictine College, Mount St. Scholastica College, and St. Benedict’s College have in common. We all have been given an internal compass that points us in the right direction – always pulling us to the values instilled in us by the Benedictines, excellence through virtue, community, and hospitality. B Ora et Labora.

Peace Through Commerce San Diego Businessman Adds $1 Million to SIBC Endowed Fund

SIBC students from Benedictine College, University of Notre Dame, and University of San Diego at the 2013 Buyside Conference with Frank Potenziani (seated second from the left). Frank Potenziani, a San Diego businessman and president of M&T Trust, recently pledged $1 million to Benedictine College for an endowed fund he created in 2006. The Thomas M. Hoenig SIBC Fund, which benefits the college’s Student International Business Council (SIBC), was created to honor Potenziani’s friend and colleague, alumnus Tom Hoenig ’68. “Tom Hoenig is my hero,” said Potenziani. “He has served the country at the Federal Reserve with intelligence and foresight. I can’t speak highly enough of him. He is just a tremendous person.” Potenziani remembers Hoenig driving him out to Atchison after a board meeeting in Kansas City. The two toured the Benedictine College campus together, and as Hoenig shared his Alma Mater, Potenziani understood why his friend felt such a deep connection to the small Catholic college. “I thought it was such a nice little place. It represents middle-America and what I believe about a Catholic education. It provides the balance that is needed in the Heart of America,” said Potenziani. SIBC helps students locate and participate in international business internships and conferences. It has a mission of “peace through commerce.” The student organization, which originated at the University of Notre Dame, is one of only three collegiate chapters that also includes the University of San Diego. The Benedictine College chapter of SIBC is currently working on a project to provide water filtration systems to families in Honduras. Hoenig, the former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, graduated in 1968 with degrees in economics and mathematics. Hoenig is currently serving a six-year term as the Vice-Chairperson of the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) Board of Directors. Help Keep Score With Style

Donors Needed to Improve Ralph Nolan Gymnasium

Alumni toured the John T. Dugan Basketball Coaches Suite and the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium at the Coffee with the Coaches event during Reunion Weekend 2013. For more than 16 years, the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium has been used as an all-purpose student activity center hosting everything from school dances and intramural games to symposiums and commencement. Plans are underway to renovate the space into a dedicated college game facility boasting new state-of-the-art scoreboards and new chair-back seats. Former Benedictine studentathletes and fans are stepping up to help fund the $400,000 project. Support from basketball alumni and St. Louis area alumni has helped secure half of the necessary $100,000 needed to install new scoreboard equipment on the north and south ends of the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium, home of the Ravens women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams. Jay Eveler, ’67, of St. Louis, gathered his friends at his home April 24 to meet Benedictine College’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach Ryan Moody, ’97, and learn more about his vision for the team. Jay served as the team manager for the St. Benedict’s Raven basketball team when they became the National Intercollegiate N.A.I.A. Basketball Champions in 1967. “I thought it a good idea to gather a few St. Louis alumni to hear the plan. Many of the group remember the ‘glory days’ when basketball competed and won national championships. As a group, we are interested in restoring men’s basketball to a respected premier program at Benedictine College. Coaches have full days just with managing their players, coaching, and recruiting. Learning that our college was making a financial commitment to assist Coach Moody and other coaches was incentive for me and others in our group to become involved,” said Eveler. During Benedictine College Alumni Weekend, June 15, Ryan Moody and Women’s Head Coach Chad Folsom, visited with

alumni about their plans for the facilities, and gave tours of the John T. Dugan Coaches Suite and the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium. Davyeon Ross ’00, of Overland Park, hosted Kansas City area alumni athletes to an event in his home July 17. Davyeon was a freshman on the Men’s Raven Basketball Team when the new student union and gymnasium was completed in 1997. “More than $51,000 has been raised so far for the scoreboards, and we are grateful to everyone who contributed to the project,” said Coach Moody. “The new scoreboards will enhance the experience for both student-athletes and fans.” Additional renovations to enhance the college game experience are being planned for Ralph Nolan Gymnasium over the next year. The transformation will include the installation of new chairback seats with steps and hand rails and a video board for fans to watch instant replays of crucial game moments and to feature players and their statistics to the crowd. These changes will give all Benedictine College fans a more enjoyable viewing experience at Raven athletic events. The first home event in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium will take place August 11, when the Benedictine College women’s volleyball team, coached by Erin Pick-Cooper, hosts a pre-season scrimmage at 11:00 a.m. B

New Campus Map

Hospitality Starts With a Welcome

When the Class of 1972 returned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their graduation, they came bearing gifts. It was only fitting that the class, who put Benedictine College on the map as the first graduating class of the newly merged college, chose to make their class gift a campus welcome sign and map. Members of the class, through a series of e-mails, letters, and passing of the hat at their 40th class dinner, raised a combined $10,000 for the sign’s installation. B “I was amazed at all of the changes that have taken place on campus in the past 40 years, so I appreciated having an opportunity to donate toward a sign with a campus map to welcome visitors, including the returning alumni who need to learn the new names for old places.” –Jo Ann Feltmann Radetic, ’72 of Washington, Mo.

Welcome Back To Campus

From the Executive Director of Alumni & Donor Relations, Tim Andrews, ’88 Dear Alumni, Preliminary results are in! Thank you to the 1,143 alumni who responded to our first-ever Alumni Attitude Study. We are quite pleased with the snapshot available for future planning and programming. We are looking forward to diving in to the details and sharing the information with the entire Benedictine College community. Results will be shared across campus this fall. Look for more details throughout the year in the Spirit of Giving.

Here are some quick takeaways from the study: • 93% rate their decision to attend Benedictine, Mount St. Scholastica or St. Benedict’s Colleges as a “good” or “great” decision. • 86% of respondents report their current overall opinion of Benedictine College is either “good” or “excellent.” • 92% say they promote the college to others. • 73% describe their experience as an alum as “good” or “excellent.” The top three components driving the overall current opinion of Benedictine College by alumni are as follows: • The history and tradition of Benedictine College. • Value of, and respect for, the degree. • Accomplishments of current students. Areas where Benedictine College should increase emphasis: • Increase opportunities for students and alumni to identify job opportunities. • Improve opportunities for alumni to promote Benedictine College to others. • Increase peer-to-peer networking opportunities for alumni. • Increase mentoring opportunities for current students by alumni. As you are well aware, the college has made tremendous progress in recent years. By sharing the results of this study, we hope to raise the level of interest and dialogue with our alumni and greater constituency. This dialogue will cultivate new ideas, shared interest, and synergy to further the mission of Benedictine College. We plan to use this process to better serve you, the college, the students, and all of our Raven families. As always, I welcome you to call me anytime to discuss your ideas and thoughts regarding the survey and future planning at Benedictine. B

Mark your calendars for all the upcoming Raven events! Look for detailed information by mail, Facebook, email, and Twitter.

Details forthcoming, all Christmas events are tentative and subject to change. Interested in organizing a Christmas Party in your area? Contact Kelly Elias at kelias@benedictine.edu or 913.360.7473.

From Raven Dance to Marketing Career

Young Alumni Award Recognizes Hannah Dumpert Hasselquist, ’11

“There is something special that comes from this school. That feeling that you have the world right at your fingertips. Do you know how to hold on to that feeling forever? You come home to Benedictine College.” -Hannah Hasselquist ’11

Hannah Dumpert Hasselquist, Class of 2011, marketing specialist for the Camp Fire organization national headquarters, is the 2013 Young Alumni Award recipient. The college initiated the award in 2007 to recognize alumni who are under 35 years old, have distinguished themselves in their community and profession, and who support the values promoted at Benedictine College. The award was presented May 10 at the traditional Senior Brunch, held the day before Commencement exercises. “Benedictine College has prepared you. They have prepared you well,” Hasselquist said to the gathered seniors. “There is something special that comes from this school. That feeling that you have the world right at your fingertips. Do you know how to hold on to that feeling forever? You come home to Benedictine College.” Hasselquist graduated from Benedictine College magna cum laude with Bachelor’s degrees in business administration and dance. She brought those two passions together while she was still in school as one of the founders of the Raven School of Dance, a student-run business. The Raven School of Dance continues to operate and recently celebrated five years of bringing dance classes to the youth of Atchison. While in school, she also served as captain of the Raven Dance Team. At Camp Fire headquarters in downtown Kansas City, she is responsible for the organization’s social media footprint, its National Youth Advisory Cabinet, and national constituent communications. Even at this early stage in her career, Hasselquist has helped the Camp Fire organization win several awards for its

brand, leadership, and overall business model. But she doesn’t stop with excellence in the workplace. She supports many non-profit organizations, predominantly through gifts of her time and talent. She utilizes her dance experience as the director of Paola School of Dance’s successful competition team and helps coach Paola High School’s dance team. She said that she sees these opportunities as ways to help high school girls explore and develop their passion and prepare for college. “When I think of someone who truly personifies Benedictine’s values and mission, I think of Hannah,” said her husband, Max. “She equates her successes with her time spent as a Raven.” Hasselquist also dances in a tap troupe that travels around the country teaching adult women the importance of living empowered, healthy lifestyles. On top of that, she was recently elected as the Kansas/Missouri ambassador for the Campaign for a Presidential Youth Council. Hasselquist was selected from hundreds of applicants to serve this movement and help convince our national lawmakers of the importance of having a youth voice in our government. Finally, Hasselquist gives back through volunteering at several local community youth organizations and gives her time back to the Benedictine College Dance Team and business department whenever she can. The Kansas City community recognized her efforts as well. In 2012, she was nominated for the Young ATHENA award hosted by the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes Kansas City business women who help empower other women through their work and volunteerism. B

REUNION 2013 More than 400 alumni from across the decades gathered in Atchison June 14–16, 2013, for the annual reunion weekend. Friday night was the time for private events for our 20th, 25th, 40th and 50th reunion classes. The evening culminated with a new reunion tradition, the Dance Around the Fountain, where all reunion classes gathered together to celebrate the beginning of the weekend as one community. Saturday was filled with many fun-filled events, including the annual Ice Cream Social hosted by the Sisters at Mount St. Scholastica Monastery. Later in the evening, President Steve Minnis, ’82 gave a state of the college

address and presented the Kansas Monk and Offeramus Awards to outstanding alumni, Thomas F. Kemlage, D.D.S, ’82 and Ruth E. Krusemark, D.M.A, ’73, respectively. A 2013 Reunion attendee sums it up well: “Time and memories are so important in your life journey and there are many people we shared them with at MSSC, SBC, and BC. We need to take the opportunity to see fellow classmates and teachers again and take ourselves back to a time that may have been less complicated and full of adventure. A reunion weekend is absolutely priceless for each of us.” Please join us next year! B

Reunion 2013 Memorable Night of Awards for Benedictine Alumni

Kansas Monk Award Recipient

Kemlage’s Philanthropy Philosophy “All of us who call Tom their friend are so proud of him for the longoverdue recognition of his many achievements in life, his contributions to the college, and his love of Benedictine,” said Abbot James Albers, O.S.B., ’94 while introducing Dr. Kemlage. “I love Benedictine and I love being a Raven. There are so many good stories of feeling welcome and feeling like you belong,” Tom said during the ceremony. “I am so honored and very humbled and thankful to receive the Kansas Monk Award.” Tom graduated from Benedictine College in 1983 with a degree in Biology and went on to the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry. He graduated from dental school with honors in 1988 and was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the honorary dental fraternity. He has been practicing dentistry in St. Louis for over 25 years and has been selected by his peers as “Top Dentist in the St. Louis area” in 2011, 2012, and 2013. He married Joan Moyer, whom he met while in college. She graduated from Benedictine in 1985 with degrees in elementary and special

education. The couple has three sons: Thad, Andrew, and Mitch. The couple has belonged to Queen of All Saints Parish for the past 24 years. Tom was involved in the “Christ Renews His Parish” program, the athletic association, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, parish missions, and many other organizations. He also coached his sons in baseball and basketball for 23 years. He and Joan set up the Kemlage Biology Travel Fund at Benedictine College in 2008 in order to financially assist biology students and other science students with department research trips and other projects. Since the creation of the Kemlage Fund, the biology department has used funding to help students attend conferences, present research, and join research trips to Egypt, the Amazon and Africa. In describing his philosophy of philanthropy, Tom has said, “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap; if you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. But if you want happiness for a lifetime, give of yourself and help others.” B

Offeramus Medal Recipient

Krusemark’s 100 Reasons Ruth Krusemark was introduced by Sister Anne Shepard, O.S.B., ’67, prioress of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery. “Ruth is dedicated, creative, encouraging, faithful, and perceptive. She believes in her students and is a wonderful, wonderful teacher,” said S. Anne during the introduction. “I personally can’t think of anyone else that the Benedictine Sisters and the college would want to give the award to during Mount St. Scholastica’s sesquicentennial year.” “I can’t tell you how overwhelmed I am to receive this award, especially during the sesquicentennial year,” Ruth said in her acceptance speech. She thanked Sister Joachim Holthaus, O.S.B., ’50, and Father Blaine Schultz, O.S.B., ’55, as mentors and teachers. Ruth is an Atchison native who began her organ studies at the age of 12 with Sr. Karlene Hoffmans, O.S.B., at Mount St. Scholastica College. She received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Benedictine College in 1973, and her postgraduate degrees at the University of Kansas. Ruth has performed as organist, pianist, accompanist, singer and choir director at more than 3,000 venues during her career. She directed the Benedictine College Chamber Singers, performing four times at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome for Pope John Paul II and once for Pope

Benedict XVI. In April 2002, the Mayor of Atchison proclaimed “Ruth E. Krusemark Day” for her original Psalm settings for the Riverbend Concert Choir. Two of her choral compositions, “Loving Lamb” and “Choral Benediction,” are published by Oregon Catholic Press. She is the composer of the Benedictine College Alma Mater, “O Lord of Ev’ry Blessing,” with collaborators Stacy Niedbalski, ’02 and Fr. Andrew Hofer, ’94. She is currently in her 48th year as organist and choir director at the First Christian Church of Atchison. Benedictine College named her the “Distinguished Educator of the Year” in 1994 and “Mother Evangelista Kremmeter Professor of Benedictine Traditions and Values” in 2013. Although she will step down as director of the Chamber Singers, Krusemark will continue to teach piano, organ, and music theory as well as chair for the music department at Benedictine College this fall. Ruth is the mother of Jeffrey Wayne Pickman and Angela Christine Pickman, ’01 and has three granddaughters: Miri, Charlie, and Kat. Above all, Ruth expressed her gratitude to her own students. “They give me hundreds of reasons to come to work with joy every single day,” she said. B

Young Alumni Sporting Kansas City Let’s Get Together! Young Alumni Program Reconnects Ravens The excitement of a sporting event, the relaxed atmosphere of a stadium, and the lifelong friends you made in college. What could be better? That is what a group of Young Alumni in Kansas City experienced when they decided to create new opportunities to gather, network, and give back. The Office of Alumni Relations has been working hard to foster more opportunities like theirs for Ravens to gather — specifically, Young Ravens. Tim Andrews, ’88 and his team want to help a Young Alumni Program that would specialize in friendship and fun, extending the relationships begun on campus. To kick things off, the Kansas City group held their first event at a Sporting KC soccer game. The evening began with over 80 area Young Alumni tailgating with food, drinks, and fun. It was a great opportunity to catch up with old classmates and meet other local Young Alumni. Young Alumni are defined as those who attended and graduated from the college in the past 10 years. Our goal with the Young Alumni Program is to help recent graduates stay connected with each other and Benedictine. To get started, the Young Alumni Program is focusing on the cities of Kansas City, St. Louis and Denver — and your town, too; the program will help wherever there is an interest.

So, let’s get together! If you are an alum who recently graduated from Benedictine College, we want to do what we can to keep you connected! Update your address. Why? Because if we don’t know where you are we can’t invite you to Young Alumni events in your area. Keep that Raven Spirit alive. Once a Raven, Always a Raven! Benedictine College always will be your home and we hope you come back often and participate in the life of the College or join in alumni events offered locally. There is always something exciting happening on campus, whether it is a Raven athletic event, a performance by our talented students, or a lecture from one of our faculty members or featured speakers. B Want to get together with more Benedictine College alumni in your area? We want to help! If you have existing activities, let us know and we can help get the word out. If you want to get something new started, you can start by contacting us. Contact Andi DuPre at the Young Alumni Program: adupre@benedictine.edu or (913) 360- 7675

I am grateful for their vision for the future.” Jack Newman, ’70, President’s Circle member and Chairman of the Benedictine College Board of Directors, sees the new initiative as a key to the college’s future. “The President’s Circle is an important element in Benedictine’s Annual Giving efforts,” Newman said. “By establishing a new level of giving that incentivizes and rewards donors, we greatly help the College meet its ever expanding needs. We all know that there are many worthy causes for our hard earned dollars, and I hope many alums will choose to place Benedictine College high on our personal philanthropic lists to receive whatever contribution makes sense.” There is still time to join the President’s Circle members and be a part of the inaugural class. Any individual or couple who contributes $20,000 or more to the Benedictine College Fund in this next fiscal year will join this group of leaders as an inaugural member. Lené Westerman ’85, President’s Circle member and Benedictine College Board member is looking for more members to join the group. “I hope other alumni and friends will join us in this exciting year of launching the President’s Circle,” she said. “I am excited to invest in Benedictine students and faculty.
