Program Details

The Boston College full-time MBA is a two-year, on-campus master’s program that offers a broad range of management education and opportunities.

Students can opt into one of two tracks: the traditional track or the STEM-designated track. The latter focuses on the application of statistical modeling, data warehousing, data mining, programming, forecasting, and operations research techniques in the context of the business world.

Small class sizes allow students to pursue individualized learning experiences and connections with classmates. Meanwhile, the program itself offers a wide range of experiential learning opportunities through internships, skills-training workshops, and more.

Pieter VanderWerf

Professor of the Practice, Business Analytics

“You encounter Big Data no matter what your job is. Our students are finding that they go to interviews for positions with seemingly nontechnical titles like ‘Market Specialist’ or ‘Financial Manager’ and are asked about their exposure to mathematical modeling. We’ve committed to a curriculum that gives all our MBAs a solid practical knowledge of all major aspects of analytics so that they can work effectively with the quantitative specialists at their workplaces, and stand out among job candidates.”

All students are required to take three core data analytics courses, which form an integral part of the BC MBA curriculum.

Data Analytics 1 : Model Building

Students learn about the primary mathematical modeling methods used in business: machine learning (or “big data”) and optimization. The course introduces the coding language R.

Data Analytics 2 : Management and Data Skills

Students are exposed to an overview of IT fundamentals, key emerging technologies, and IT managerial frameworks. The course covers SQL and entity relationship diagrams.

Data Analytics 3: In Practice

This course provides a pragmatic overview of emerging analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence techniques. Students use Python and Tableau.

Emily Pansa, MBA ’19

SVP, Digital Director, Bank of America

“A typical week in business school usually includes presenting a case analysis in class, writing code for a data analytics project, leading a team of peers at a club meeting, and conducting various networking sessions. The BC MBA enabled me to better refine my skill sets as a project manager and gain new, higher-level capabilities in quantitative analysis and problem solving.”

Master of Business Administration

The first year of the program provides students with a broad foundation of business knowledge. Once students complete their core requirements in Year 1, they concentrate on elective coursework in Year 2.

The Carroll School offers several dual-degree programs in collaboration with other Boston College schools and programs. Students are generally able to complete all the requirements of a dual-degree program in significantly less time than it would take to pursue two programs separately. To apply for a dual-degree program, students must apply to both programs, and both schools, if applicable.

Classes incorporated lectures, projects, and guest speakers—all with the goal of teaching students the agile marketing approaches that help scale a new company quickly.

OR Dx + Rx Directed Practicum

On a mission to eradicate preventable surgery errors, medical startup OR Dx + Rx tapped three MBA students to help market its uncommon, safety-first consulting services to hospitals, insurance companies, regulators, and other clients. The students earned credit as they researched the market, studied potential competitors, and developed and pitched a strategy that OR Dx + Rx put into practice—with a promised payoff in lives saved.
