Student Success

When Lily Pebbles began her beauty and lifestyle blog as part of a digital marketing module at Birmingham City Business School, she had no idea how many doors would open up for her. Now she runs her blog and YouTube channel full-time, attends regular press events, collaborates with brands such as ASOS and won a Johnson & Johnson Journalism Award for Best Independent Beauty Blogger.

Student Success A group of Birmingham City Business School students won the International Entrepreneurial Brains Made on Campus 2015 Competition, hosted in Stuttgart. Their business idea beat off rival entries from Austria, Hungary, Germany, Scotland and Switzerland, securing votes from successful start-up companies, large multi-nationals and the Stuttgart Ministry of Finance. Ron Brown from the University’s Enterprise Innovation and Business Engagement team said: “Winning such a prestigious European competition demonstrates the transferable entrepreneurial skills they have learned while studying at Birmingham City Business School. 12

Academics

There are around 100 full-time academic staff on our teaching team but their academic skills are just part of who they are. Vanessa Clarke is Director of Leadership Development Programmes. In her role, she is always looking for new ways to get students to work with organisations, from short-term miniprojects within the student Leadership Challenge, like Birmingham Made Me, to full-time courses such as our work-based Professional Practice degree, and from research activities to brand endorsements.

Placements - Hyundai Each of our full-time degree courses are available as a four-year sandwich course and we encourage every student to take their third year as a placement year. “Taking a placement is one of the most important things you can do as part of your degree. It’s taught me so many different skills and is such a good experience to get the real-life feel of working in an actual job.” Katherine Anley – BA (Hons) Business Studies Placement with Hyundai Motor UK

Placements - Worcester Bosch There’s no better way to prepare for work than to experience it first-hand. That’s why we put so much time and dedication into our Business Placements Scheme. “I would recommend doing a placement because it sets you apart from everyone else when applying for graduate jobs. Bosch is a big name that I will have on my CV, whereas the people who went straight through the three years without doing a placement aren’t going to have that advantage.” Zack Telling – BA (Hons) Economics and Finance Placement with Worcester Bosch 20

Travel Scholarships As a student at Birmingham City Business School, Travel Scholarships are just one of the opportunities available to help you boost your confidence and your employability. Andrei, who volunteered at an orphanage in Nepal, said: “Travelling to a Third World country and being involved with a project like this is one of those experiences everyone should do at least once in their lifetime, as it awakens you from so many points of view! And, even more importantly, you have the chance of putting a smile on the faces of the ones that weren’t born with the same chances as you.” 22
