BDAV Member Wins National Building Design of the Year Alphington Townhouses – a development of four climate-responsive homes designed by BDAV Member, Green Sheep Collective that exemplify quality over quantity – has won the coveted National Building Design of the Year in the National Association of Building Designers’ 2017 Design Awards. The project also won the NABD award for Best Multi-Residential Design up to 6 Dwellings. It capped off a successful year for Green Sheep Collective, as the project won the BDAV Multi-Residential Design award, and received a commendation for Excellence in Use of Lightweight Materials in the BDAV’s 2017 Building Design Awards. The NABD Award Judges described the project as not only a model of innovative building design, but also urban design – from the subdivision of the blocks to enable the best orientation and access to northern light; to the concept of not letting the car dominate the streetscape, to breaking down the concrete surfaces with landscaping and low fence heights to maintain connection with the broader environment; to the space planning of each townhouse to ensure sustainable design attributes. “The promise of quality is evident in gestures such as the introduction of courtyards into each townhouse, improving the quality of internal spaces

immensely via natural light, crossventilation and engagement with the outdoors,” said the NABD Award Judges. “The bold but limited pallet, showing subtle finesse in variation, creates a mature and highly skilled design showing quality combined with good form and excellent articulation.”

“The end product is not only a group of very liveable and homely townhouses, but a great model for medium density housing in Australia,” added the Judges. Architect Shae Parker McCashen of Green Sheep Collective kept the needs of future owners front of mind when planning their layout. “During the design process, the emphasis was placed on creating high-quality, energy-efficient design, in preference to fitting as many units on the block as possible,” she explains. The townhouses each have front and back yards, and are set back from the street – which allowed existing trees to be retained. “We wanted to make sure that the townhouses fitted into the neighbourhood and incorporated natural elements, such as angled timber screens, to create a respectful streetscape,” said Shae. This approach to medium density saw little resistance from the local community. There was only one objection lodged to the design. “It’s a quiet neighbourhood and there were concerns about the density of the project. But after discussing the design and what we were hoping to achieve, the neighbours withdrew their objection,” she noted. ....Continued next page

Alphington Townhouses It’s not unusual for townhouses to be dark, but one of the standout features of this development are the internal courtyards that provide direct natural light to all rooms. The addition of the internal courtyards also enhances the quality of the internal spaces, allowing for cross ventilation and creating a connection with the outdoors. “The courtyards were not in the initial brief from the developer, but once we showed them that option, they loved it. They saw the value that it would bring to the property,” said Shae. The townhouses were designed to incorporate quality materials, specified to ensure the longevity of the building. Sustainable features include passive shading, double glazing, north-facing windows and maximum insulation. “The interior is flooded with natural light, but the passive shading of the courtyard regulates the temperature so that the rooms don’t get too hot, and there is a lot more green space than you would normally expect in a townhouse.” The close working relationship between the architect and developer provided a good outcome for both parties. “We’d worked with the developer before and having that established relationship helped us push the envelope. By collaborating with the developer, the final design ended up offering a higher quality space than I think they anticipated at the beginning of the design process,” said Shae.

The developer’s risk paid off with three of the townhouses selling for considerably more than the suburb’s average – with the final townhouse retained by the developer. The project proves that focusing on smart layouts doesn’t have to mean a trade-off in income for developers. “People don’t want stock-standard houses. What I think this development shows is that, at the end of the day, people will pay more for goodquality design,” observed Shae.

NABD Award Winners 2017 North Sunshine Renovation, Chris Clout Design

BDAV Members scooped the pool at the NABD winners, winning eight of the categories, followed by BDAWA members winning seven of the categories, then BDAQ members winning the remaining six categories. The NABD Awards had a unique twist this year: they were held as a live presentation on 30 November 2017, in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, or Adelaide, at a Brickworks Studio in those locations, providing a real time roll-out of the results around Australia. The brainchild of BDAWA, who were responsible this year for hosting the NABD Awards, this fresh, green initiative, slashed carbon emissions, time out of the office and travel costs usually spent on a centralised traditional event. Little bits that can make a big difference to your town planning outcomes Once again at this time of year Councils across the state will implement ‘blackout periods’ restricting the advertising of planning applications over the festive season. As is the case year-in/ year-out, the dates and restrictions of the ‘blackouts’ vary from Council to Council. Permit applicants should contact their relevant Council for details, but here is an example of what some Councils have announced will not count towards the normal 14 day public notification period: Glen Eira......... Dec 22nd 2017-Jan 5th 2018 Port Philip........ Dec 18th 2017-Jan 8th 2018 Brimbank....... Dec 20th 2017-Jan 25th 2018 Boroondara....... Dec 8th 2017-Feb 5th 2018 Moonee Valley... Dec 8th 2017-Jan 5th 2018 In most instances a sign must be erected for 14 ‘continuous’ days (not including the dates above). During these dates some councils allow advertising, however the sign(s) must be maintained on site for 28 days or the duration of the ‘black out‘ period. So it is often in an

applicant’s best interest to not erect the sign on site until after the blackout period has ended. It is also noteworthy that the Planning and Environment Act does not authorise Council to ‘blackout’ days over the Christmas period, even though it has become common practice. Regular readers will be aware that changes to the VCAT Act that require VCAT application fees associated with ‘failure to determine’ appeals to be borne by Council, at the direction of the Tribunal, unless the Council can convince the Tribunal that no such order should be made. Clause 1 believes Councils that enforce ‘blackout periods’ over the Christmas period could be inadvertently exposing themselves to ‘failure’ appeals from more-aggressive applicants and may well find themselves liable for the associated appeal fees, due to the fact the ‘blackout days’ are still likely to count towards the 60-day period in which Council should make its decision.

Four ‘About’ Pages Worth Seeing How to craft an effective and authentic ‘About’ section has been a common theme among my clients lately. Often relegated to the ‘too hard’ basket, articulating who you are and what differentiates your practice is one of the trickiest, yet most important aspects of your business communications. Your About page is typically the first and most frequented website page (your Google Analytics will likely confirm this) people visit to gain an understanding of who you are, your experience and, importantly, if you’re the right fit for their project. Consider what the core purpose of this page is: To highlight your particular passion/ interests so that you can showcase and differentiate your design approach; to make the most of any unique capabilities or achievements; to connect with your target clients, and entice them to want to find out more, and so on. Testimonials are one of the simplest and most effective ways to sell what it’s like to work with you and why people can trust you.

Todd’s Top Apps Snap Send Solve Many of you will relate to this I think. You’re driving down the road and see something that’s not right. A bin all over the road, a fallen tree, illegal parking, street lights out, a huge pot hole in the road etc. Ever thought to yourself – I should call council or the police or someone – but it’s hard to know who to report it too – and do you really want to spend 30 mins on the phone – not really your problem right? Well things have just got a whole lot easier to action – Snap Send Solve is an app that allows you to take a photo of whatever the issue is, write a quick note about it and hit send. The app will automatically geo locate the

photo and will send the issue to the right government department – it’s that simple. Tired of hoons near the kids’ school, illegally parking across sidewalks, some other kind of road hazard? Snap Send Solve could be the answer.

FireFox Focus Tired of being tracked on the internet and being force fed ads on things you searched earlier. Pop ups killing you? If the latest rumours are true about certain apps actually listening in to your conversations via your own microphone surreptitiously and then customising ads on your next social media or browser search – then it could be time to make some changes. Firefox (Mozilla) long known for their stance on privacy have released a privacy browser for phones/tablets. Firefox Focus blocks a whole range of ad, analytics, social and other

web trackers. So, if you want to decrease your internet footprint a little, might pay to switch to this browser. I don’t think you’ll be invisible but maybe a little smaller would be nice.

Markup Editor Whilst not specifically an app – some of you may not know about this in-built IOS feature which I think is pretty handy. Simply go into photos, select the photo you wish to mark up, click edit and then find the little ‘more’ sign – its three dots in a circle – this will bring up the Mark-up icon. You will then have a small range of pen, pencil, eraser, lasso with colour options etc. with which to make notes or mark up the image. Save it and off you go. I actually came across this feature whilst searching for a replacement app for Report Monster – a super handy app I use a lot but isn’t supported yet on the latest IOS update. CSIRO Makes Carbon Fibre Breakthrough to Create New Industry for Australia CSIRO scientists have produced Australia’s first entirely home-grown carbon fibre, paving the way for Australian industry to mass-produce the next generation materials, used in everything from bicycles and tennis rackets to satellites and fighter planes. “Cracking the carbon code will allow industry to manufacture this incredibly strong and lightweight material for the first time from scratch, using Australia’s own top secret recipe,” Dr Marshall said. “Together with Deakin University, we’ve created the seed to grow our manufacturing industry in Australia – generating jobs of the future built on home-grown innovation.” Carbon fibre is only made by a handful of manufacturers around the world, each of whom hold their own secret, patented recipes. “From wind turbines to aerospace, even the latest Mustang wheels, a

carbon fibre industry signals the kind of reinvention needed across Australian industry, shifting our focus from raw exports to high value products to retain our global competitive advantage,” Dr Marshall said. “This is another chapter in the innovation history of Geelong, where Australia’s first carbon fibre was created from scratch using CSIRO produced white fibre. It’s a major leap forward in turning the region into an international carbon fibre hub.” Carbon fibre combines high rigidity, tensile strength and chemical resistance with low weight, and is used in everything from aviation and defence to space and car manufacturing. Last month’s announcement that Australia has joined the elite club of carbon fibre manufacturers using CSIRO patented technology is the first step in creating a generation of carbon fibre that is stronger and of a higher quality.

“We want to unlock carbon fibre’s full potential. On our first attempt we created car quality carbon fibre – we now expect to improve on that result and produce aerospace standard carbon fibre,” CSIRO Research Director Dr John Tsanaktsidis said. “CSIRO’s Advanced Manufacturing Roadmap, released in November 2016, called on Australian industry to play to its strengths by focusing on high value advanced manufacturing. Creating a future industry based on carbon fibre is an excellent example of bringing that to life.” Australia’s first carbon fibre was produced using polyacrylonitrile fibre, spun on the joint CSIRO/ Deakin University wet spinning line, then carbonised at Deakin’s “Carbon Nexus” facility. Site Visit Held at ‘Killara’ Stephen Crafti steps through the doors of the BDAV Building Design of the Year – Killara On Sunday, 19 November 2017, 60 people – guided by leading architecture and design writer Stephen Crafti – walked through the doors of BDAV’s Building Design of the Year – Killara. Designed by Junctions90, the Victorian home in Windsor was one of five homes visited by the tour group that day. Stephen Crafti runs monthly housing tours that sell out in days – taking attendees on a design journey through Melbourne’s most creative buildings. Stephen has been writing about design since the early 1990s, and regularly contributes to Australian newspapers and local and international design magazines. As the group explored the home, Stephen discussed the clear distinction between old and new, and the importance of respecting the integrity of

an old building – a design principal he is particularly passionate about. Attendees marveled at the home’s lofty new spaces and intimate period rooms. The tour group particularly admired the beautiful sunken lounge and floating fireplace, and commended the use of stainless steel. “My goal for these tours is to showcase homes that have a voice,” Stephen said. “People love seeing how others have shaped their own homes and living environments.” A big fan of Stephen Crafti, lead designer Dina Malathounis loved the experience of having her work showcased in the prestigious writer’s tour. Technology in Design by Tim Adams, FBDAV The things we do in our day jobs will continue to evolve with new technological advances in our own discipline and those we interact with in the construction industry. To close out the BDAV 2017 CPD seminar program, we were exposed to a few of those things that will have the potential to shape the way we work and the things we need to consider in the design solutions our clients will demand. John Braakhuis, representing Excellero IT Solutions, provided some clarity around acronyms that techno geeks liberally populate their conversation, the ones that cause most of us to try to remember whether the school guidance counsellor had advised whether we possessed an aptitude for foreign languages. Of course the difference between POE and EOP will now never be in question for those who were paying attention to the presentation. Similarly, we now know for sure that non-ionizing radiation is probably OK for us but start to get worried about ionizing radiation. Importantly for our building designs it is now clear what we need to know about how WiFi signals travel around a building and the things that are critical to ensure data-rich streams are accessible throughout all the rooms. It is prudent to allow for remote aerial points in most buildings to ensure that signals do not need to travel through walls. Next on the agenda was a state of play summary about drone applications for our industry. Brad Aylett and Victor Thomson from National Drones provided a quick illustration of drone disasters that await inexpert pilots but also outlined where time and safety considerations make drones a tool of great value.

Matt Trevaskis from Spiire provided examples of where the technology can help with the accurate measurement and creation of point clouds of buildings and environments. As with many innovative developments in data processing, this application creates Big Data. Point clouds come at different levels of accuracy from 20mm to 10mm and 5mm point spacing.

Before anyone contemplates launching a drone for work-place applications, there are a host of airspace regulations controlled by CASA-Civil Aviation Safety Authority for safe operation that need comprehensive understanding. We know it is not OK to employ a drone to pick up one with onions and sauce from the hardware store sausage sizzle.

One simple case study gave some insight that the level of data collection may be considered as overkill for the scope of the task at hand. On-site measurement and existing conditions drawing preparation may easily be carried out at a suitably effective level using traditional methods. Large scale projects however stand out as an area where 3D scanning will deliver immense benefits.

Observing roofs, roof mounted equipment and other installations where OH&S requirements for working at height attracts high costs are likely to be better carried out by a high definition camera on one of these compact flying platforms. Thermal imaging photography on a drone can identify where photovoltaic panels and

Eat Drink Design Awards Winners 2017 Australasia’s best-designed hospitality venues were named last month in the annual Eat Drink Design Awards which celebrate design excellence and innovation within restaurants, bars, cafés, nightclubs, retail spaces and temporary venues from across Australia and New Zealand. This year, New South Wales dominated the Awards with three venues named as winners in their respective categories, as well as a timeless favourite being inducted into the Eat Drink Design Awards’ Hall of Fame.

Best Bar Design

Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Barangaroo is clearly the place to be in 2017: Campos Barangaroo (designed by Woods Bagot) took out Best Retail Design while Noma Australia (designed by Foolscap Studio) claimed the title of Best Installation Design.

Surprisingly, Melbourne’s CBD was left wanting with Victoria’s only award winners coming from suburban and regional areas.

Best Bar Design – The Dolphin Hotel by George Livissianis, Paddington NSW

Located almost 25 kilometres south west of the city centre, Morris and Heath (designed by Ritz& Ghougassian) flew the flag for Hoppers Crossing, winning Best Café Design, while the highly lauded Jackalope Hotel on the Mornington Peninsula received recognition for Best Identity Design (designed by Fabio Ongarato Design).

The Dolphin Hotel is a treat. Both temporary and permanent, anarchic and cogent, the bar’s interior balances diametric opposites in exquisite tension. Originally a series of rooms for a series of art projects, the spaces work seamlessly together, united by a light-coloured palette.

South Australia was not to be outdone by its eastern counterparts: Viet Next Door (designed by Genesin Studio) in Pennington was awarded Best Restaurant Design.

Whimsical yet disciplined in its approach, The Dolphin Hotel (designed by George Livissianis) in Paddington was awarded Best Bar Design for its immaculate balance of diametric opposites.

The annual Eat Drink Design Awards celebrate design excellence within Australian and New Zealand hospitality premises that have opened to the public in the past 18 months. From high-end restaurants and bars to offbeat, hole-inthe-wall cafes and pop-ups, this program is the authoritative forum for architects, designers and their clients to present their best new projects.

Potts Point’s timelessly ‘theatrical’ Fratelli Paradiso (designed by the late Mike Murphy) becomes the newest long-standing hospitality institution welcomed into the illustrious Eat Drink Design Awards’ Hall of Fame. In an industry characterised by transience, this special accolade acknowledges enduring excellence in the design of a hospitality venue of more than 10 years’ standing.

“This year’s entries were united by a sweeping sense of ambition across all categories – one focused on careful detail. Within the scope of such ambition we saw more genteel and conservative entries, and entries with irony, verve and wit. The winners in each category display multiple such qualities, combined with a sense of rigour in the application of detail and materials,” said Cassie Hansen, jury chair.

The Dolphin Hotel is successful both day and night, an achievement that is unusual in itself. The effect of the interior has been achieved in an economical and parsimonious way, and the overall impression is of an interior that doesn’t take itself or anything too seriously. Perhaps one of the most important outcomes of the creation of The Dolphin Hotel is that it has inserted itself provocatively into the conversation about Sydney’s lockout laws, as the temporary pop-up that stayed put. ....Continued next page

The timber panels and battens may not be an original idea, but they have been finely detailed and executed in this application, with such details as the ‘fingertip’ scale of the battens giving tactility and a ‘must touch’ aspect to the interior. The operable screen further multiplies the space – a detail that could have been omitted, but which would have diminished the pleasing complexity of the café’s spatial form. As the light changes over the course of the day, the screen is there to operate as a kind of veil. Overall, this is a deeply positive interior, timeless and anything but temporary.

Morris and Heath is a holistically considered interior, bringing high-end design to Melbourne’s western suburbs. The interior successfully creates its own moment, its own place, warm and comfortable with its disciplined palette of wood and strategically placed lighting. All is understated, nothing in this interior is extraneous, and it is one of the most remarkable outcomes seen among this year’s entrants.

New WoodSolutions Technical Design Guide: Timber Garden Retaining Walls The beauty and practicality of timber retaining walls is well recognised; however, poor design or an inappropriate selection of materials can lead to reduced longevity. In this new WoodSolutions design guide, readers will discover an easy-to-use, free resource that will enable them to successfully design and build retaining walls of up to 1m in height. Number 41 in the series of WoodSolutions Design Guides, Timber Garden Retaining Walls is an accessible resource, written for both design and landscaping professionals and ambitious DIY’ers. The Guide begins with an explanation of the 1m limit. Local authorities generally do not require building approval or an engineer’s certification for retaining walls up to 1 metre high, although there are exceptions, detailed in the Guide. The body of the publication is devoted to a discussion of design, materials and construction details. Useful information includes tables showing recommended

spans, post depths and fixing details. These are complemented by drawings of typical construction systems, including connections, drainage, backfill and other functional elements. The role of timber, the types of timber available and how to specify or purchase them are central to the value of the guide for designers and builders. New Suburbs in Melbourne’s North The Victorian State Government announced last month that it is building new communities in Melbourne’s north with the services and infrastructure that families deserve. Melbourne’s latest suburbs, Donnybrook and Woodstock, will be developed over a 30-year period, eventually becoming a home for 17,000 dwellings and 2,100 local jobs. Plans for five local town centres, five convenience centres, six government schools, four non-government schools and 46 hectares of parkland are also included. “Donnybrook and Woodstock will be great places to live and raise a family, with nearby jobs for locals and affordable homes that help young Victorians achieve their dream of homeownership,” said Victoria’s Planning Minister, Richard Wynne. The State Government is ensuring developers who make a windfall out of new suburbs are giving back by helping fund community services and facilities needed by new residents and families.

The Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) paid by developers will be $115 million, which will go towards land acquisition and construction for a future primary school at Donnybrook – named in the interim as Hayes Hill Primary School – as well as a future CFA and ambulance station, a community hub and sports grounds. Future GAIC works will include expanded car parking at Donnybrook and a new station at Lockerbie.

Holiday Closure The BDAV’s office will close for annual holidays at 12 noon on Friday, 22 December 2017, and will re-open on Monday, 15 January 2018.

The State Government is already partnering with the Commonwealth on a $20 million upgrade of Donnybrook and Wallan stations, as part of the Regional Rail Revival package. Supply is a cornerstone of housing affordability, which is why the Government is rezoning 100,000 lots of land in key growth areas in two years, and speeding up the time it takes for land to be shovelready. The Government is making it easier for Victorians to buy their first home, with thousands of Victorian first home buyers benefitting from generous stamp duty cuts that came into force on 1 July 2017.

New CIAT President Alex Naraian PCIAT has been inaugurated as the 28th President of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). Alex is an Associate Director at Ascot Design in the UK, and has been an active Member within the Institute. The new President received the Chain of Office at the close of the Institute’s AGM held in Newcastle, UK, on 18 November 2017. He holds office for the next two years and among his core objectives are to continue leading and setting trends in the industry in the field of Architectural Technology. Speaking of his appointment, Alex said “I am honoured and privileged to take on the role of President of an Institute that I am very passionate about, and for a profession for which I hold immense pride. My vision is to focus on identity, presence and growth to evolve the Institute further, working to our 2018-2023 Strategic Plan, to be launched next year. Victorian Builders Feature in National Awards Victorian builders featured in multiple award categories at Master Builders’ National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards announced late last month. Kane Constructions Pty Ltd received the National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award $50-$100 million for their work on the University of Melbourne Arts West Redevelopment, an animated and high-profile renovation of a 1990s institutional building in Parkville. This accolade follows Kane’s victory as Master Builder of the Year (Commercial) at the MBAV’s Excellence in Construction Awards earlier this year. The building’s previously sober façade has been replaced with a matrix of horizontal fins sculpted to depict silhouettes of notable objects in the university’s cultural collection. The interior offers a vivid and textured series of spaces for study and instruction including a 150-seat lecture hall. An expansive atrium links with the original building by a 30-metre vierendeel truss, notable for its strength and decorative quality without diagonal bracing. “This building has an unexpected degree of personality; its interior spaces have a notable but restrained multi-ethnic flavour that creates a pleasant educational atmosphere,” said MBAV’s CEO, Radley de Silva. “The way this project is put together is compelling and invites exploration.” “We are very fortunate to have high-calibre projects such as these to demonstrate the significance of Victoria’s building and construction industry and contribute to its distinguished heritage.” Mr de Silva said.

Victorian Builders Feature in National Awards (continued)

Among housing winners, Cameron Construction was awarded the National Project Home for projects under $350,000 for their work on Macs Cove. Taking inspiration from designs of the 1950s this modern home takes advantage of cuttingedge technology and materials. Glass was used for the external façade, creating a striking contrast to the surrounding pine forest. The house features an innovative modular design allowing both bedrooms to be opened up to provide an unimpeded view of all areas of the house’s interior and exterior. Bayside Construct won the Cbus National Medium Density Award for projects over five dwellings for their work on the Mint apartments. This project consists of 16 apartments spread across four floors, enjoying either panoramic city views or bay views. Each residence offers an expansive floor plan with either a robust dark colour scheme or a bright light-hued palette, which showcases its finishes. An integral part of Mint’s design draws visual interest across the façade, with green-tinted glass and a custom mould for the precast panels.

Grand and luxurious, this home is full of innovative ideas like facial recognition, underfloor heating, a glass lift, and a free-standing staircase with a reverse angle glass balustrade. It features an ergonomically designed kitchen and scullery boasting stone benchtops and detailed cabinetworks. The theatre room includes tiered seating, floor to ceiling curtains and a drop down projector. The pool and spa are ideally situated near the large entertaining area. Beautifully finished and packed with quality inclusions, this unique home is a worthy winner of National Residential Master Builder of the Year.

McCorkell Constructions received the National Education facility Award for their execution of Ruyton Girls School, Kew. The project comprised demolishing an existing school classroom building before constructing a four-level multi-purpose building, plus extensive landscaping. The building displays a concrete-reinforced structure and includes a basement with a functions area, plus kitchen for catering and performing arts spaces and facilities.

Need someone to conduct an energy rating for you? Use a BDAV Accredited Thermal Performance Assessor! Legislation in several Australian states requires that all domestic construction submitted for building permit approval must demonstrate compliance with energy efficiency requirements. One method for demonstrating this compliance is through the use of software accredited under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). In New South Wales, the BASIX thermal comfort protocol also applies. NatHERS is a star rating system (out of ten) that rates the energy efficiency of a home, based on its design. The BDAV is a government-appointed assessor accrediting organisation for thermal performance assessors and has many accredited assessors as BDAV Members. TPAs accredited through the BDAV are committed to a code of conduct that sets minimum professional standards and responsibilities. Hearing Augmentation Solutions … Balancing Social Obligation and Compliance Hearing Augmentation Systems are a legal requirement in many public spaces as defined in the Building Code of Australia. They are also a vital public service. The purpose of these systems is to assist those with hearing difficulties to both comprehend and enjoy material that is being amplified through an installed PA system, and their provision is mandatory in many public spaces, including educational institutions, places of business, auditoria, rooms used for legal proceedings and some reception areas. The P.A. People has been delivering hearing augmentation solutions for well over 20 years. The company has been and continues to be a leader in the design and delivery of these systems. Prior to Sydney’s iconic Olympic Games in the year 2000, they installed hearing augmentation systems in many of the new venues that were constructed – including the Olympic Stadium. While not as ‘visible’ or well known, they also provided coverage of Yulang – a 5,000sqm outdoor paved space around the Sydney Olympic Park railway station. Since that time, The P.A. People have installed solutions in The Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Town Hall and Sydney Airport – just a few venues that have benefited from our understanding of and expertise in hearing augmentation.

The following represent some diverse applications – and their experience beyond these extends to a wide range of locations and venue types. Yulang, Olympic Park Well before the crowds arrived for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, The P.A. People

were installing hearing augmentation systems throughout the new venues built for the Games, including the Olympic Stadium itself. Not as obvious though is the vast 70 metre by 70 metre induction loop system The P.A. People installed under Yulang, the 5,000 square metre outdoor paved space around the Sydney Olympic Park Railway Station. Working with the paving crew, The P.A. People laid kilometres of copper wiring under the pavers to complement the PA system, ensuring all visitors to the existing precinct could clearly hear paging and announcements throughout the vast space. Centennial Hall, Sydney Town Hall Sydney’s heritage-listed Town Hall was the largest municipal hall in the world when it opened in 1889. Its red cedar galleries, marble columns, stained glass windows and massive pipe organ are national treasures. Sensitive to the aesthetic and historical importance of the building, The P.A. People installed an induction loop under the Centennial Hall floorboards. A challenge for the installation was the presence one storey down of the Lower Town Hall, a multipurpose space often used for concerts and community events. This meant that the Centennial Hall induction loop needed to be considered within the design, to minimise audibility of the loop in the lower hall. Barangaroo Ferry Wharf Sydney’s new transport hub, the Barangaroo Ferry Wharf, opened in June 2017. The two wharves are 48 metres

long and 23 metres wide and can berth eight ferries at full capacity. The P.A. People worked closely with builder McConnell Dowell to install a technically innovative, large-scale induction loop system that covers 25 metres by 18 metres of the structure, as well as individual loops that cover Help and Information points. “The P.A. People actually installed two induction loops that overlap to cover dead spots,” explained David Duong, Project Engineer at McConnell Dowell. “It was a complex installation on top of metal pontoons, fabricated from steel, which usually causes problems with induction loops.” “It’s an elaborate induction loop,” confirmed Ross Ford, Project Manager for The P.A. People. “Installing an AFIL (Audio Frequency Induction Loop) on steel has been considered to be detrimental to performance, but we have found that if you properly install, paying attention to correct insulation, it is working extremely well.” “The P.A. People were very accommodating,” commented David Duong. “They provided lots of information and were happy to share their knowledge. The practical nature of their understanding was beneficial to us as a builder, as they knew the issues that can arise in the building phase. That allowed us to fix those issues before they occurred, meaning that the installation went very smoothly.” Go to www.papeople.com.au for more information.

New Victorian Education Campus with Heritage Edge From a historic hall and post office to an award-winning educational facility, two heritage listed buildings in Port Melbourne, Victoria, have come together to form the impressive Albert Park College Year 9 Environmental Arts Hub campus. Designed by Six Degrees Architects, Albert Park College is an adaptive reuse of a heritage naval drill hall, built in 1911 and the Sandridge post and telegraph office, built in 1862. “Our aim was to complement the original architecture,” explains Simon O’Brien, Director of Six Degrees Architects. “Our design highlights the qualities and intricate details of the historic buildings – robust construction and light and airy interiors.” With an emphasis on showcasing the original features of both buildings, Big River Group’s Armourpanel timber finishes were utilised to enhance the original timber floors, create warmth and texture and to visually connect the campus. “The new school campus is designed specifically for Year 9 students, the year they usually push the boundaries as they transition to adulthood. The project required a material that is both hardwearing and durable, and would sit comfortably within the heritage context. Using the plasterboard default usually associated with government schools would have been an injustice to the history of the buildings and would have been damaged within weeks.” says O’Brien. The design adapts the existing mezzanine and lower floors into large teaching and learning spaces and retains the drill hall as a multipurpose performance and teaching space. In the spacious drill hall building, a stepped

timber seating area made from Big River Group’s Blackbutt Armourpanel engineered plywood connects the two levels and gives a unique appreciation of the building volume; increasing the usefulness of the space for performance and large group activities. O’Brien describes the post office building as being a unique piece of Victorian history that they worked carefully on to conserve. “We stripped the post office to its original finishes and preserved it in an elegantly unfinished state,” he says. Utilising the cellular brick spaces to house administrative, meeting and music rehearsal rooms, Big River Armourpanel was selected for the ceilings and walls complementing the exposed brickwork and fitting in effortlessly with the building’s original features.

Big River Armourpanel is Australia’s strongest decorative plywood and has been designed, tested and approved to tolerate extremes of heat and humidity, and to resist shrinkage. Its tolerance of changes in ambient temperature and its toughness make it ideal as flooring, ceiling or wall linings in hard-wearing areas. New external built forms are separated from the heritage structures and clad in subtle and recessive materials to remain in keeping with the original layout. The new lift tower and stairs are located to the rear of the building to activate the laneway and minimise visual impact on the main heritage facades. Overall, approximately 300 sheets of Big River’s Armourpanel made from native Australian timber was used for the floors, ceilings, walls and joinery. O’Brien looked to Big River Group’s plywood for the internal finishes for its long life, durability and greater warmth and appearance value. “Although a complex project, involving multiple stakeholder groups, the project has delivered another life to two heritage buildings and is now a fabulous asset to both the College and the local community.” The Albert Park College Environmental Arts Hub was recognised with two awards at the recent 2017 Victorian Architecture Awards: John George Knight Award for Heritage Architecture Henry Bastow Award for Educational Architecture Go to www.bigrivergroup.com.au for more information.
