From the President
From the President Dominique Hunter
As an association we have been working hard to demonstrate leadership, drive excellence and provide support for our members – all the while cementing our position as a leading voice, and resource, within our industry. Educating members, the industry and consumers about who we are and what we do. All in preparation for now. So, what is now? We have come to an age of confidence. A time where what our members want or need from us is changing. A time where we need to adapt to ensure we have the right tools to provide our members with guidance, support and abundant opportunities for growth.
Today, everything we do is centred around experience. Whether that be the experience our members have with our association, their clients’ experience with them while designing a building, or the lived experience our members are trying to create in any setting – every step of the journey matters.
But why now? The building design profession has evolved. While the focus has always been on ‘good design’, it is no longer just about delivering on the client brief. It is about celebrating our profession’s ability to see beyond the brief and value the human experience, and the experience of what good design brings - interaction, collaboration, feeling.
While our members are busy working hard to deliver highquality design outcomes for clients, we’ve been working in the background to push our association to the next level. It is an exciting time for us as we look to expand our support and offerings, promote building design on a larger scale, grow our membership cohort and have a stronger influence on policy.
While the focus has always been on ‘good design’, it is no longer just about delivering on the client brief.
We believe our determined focus on these initiatives will enable our members to do their best work, maximise work efficiencies and still find time to seek inspiration, training and guidance. As we embark on this transformation, I look forward to sharing updates on our progress, encouraging conversation in the industry and taking the time to create solutions that help our members to become leaders in their field. While our members concentrate on delivering better design solutions for clients, we’re here to support them to realise a better future ...a future where Design Matters.

Moat’s Corner Moat’s Corner is a benchmark for quality residential design. Nestled elegantly within five acres of established gardens on a 53-acre property, its clean lines, colour palette, and use of natural materials make this home a clear standout. The simple, understated entrance hides a sleek, modernist inspired home for a growing family. The carefully thought out floorplan creates an element of surprise as you navigate through the space, while ensuring the separate wings for the parents, teenage children and guests provide a private sanctuary. The hallway of the bedroom wing has been designed to act as an interactive library with panelling forming as bookshelves. While the deepset glass above, below and in-between the panelling ensures no views of the lush greenery outside is compromised. Completely elevated, the building gives the illusion of floating off the ground. Motorised glass sliding doors bring the outside in, allowing the residents to enjoy natural light from every room and a peaceful outlook on to the site’s gardens. Through careful consideration of the site to ensure no detrimental impact to the natural vegetation, the size of Moat’s Corner is concealed in a showcase of sophistication. Moat’s Corner is a beautiful, timeless structure which demonstrates what can be achieved at the height of building design. Moat’s Corner is also the winner for Residential Design – New House over $3M Construction Cost.

Backbeach Project Backbeach Project sets the standard in low maintenance yet stylish living. Beaumont Concepts has designed a contemporary coastal home for a young first-home owner which achieves high standards in energy efficiency. Its simple, refined design respects the environmental context of the site while the second storey provides views of the thick coastal vegetation. Using an unconventional orientation and T-section layout, the coastal home has made the most of its small site while creating a sense of space greater than its actual dimensions. Paying homage to the existing landscape, the understated design and height of the Backbeach Project home, along with features like the use of Silvertop Ash timber, effortlessly complements its coastal surrounds. Heathmont Passive House
Residential Design
Designing an environmentally connected and conscious dream home, with ample spaces to host regular community meetings and interstate family visitors requires careful consideration. To make this a reality a near-retiring couple, Maxa Design overcame significant challenges presented by the site’s steep falling land and large trees that restricted any winter solar gain after midday to create a Passive House for its occupants. Heathmont’s upper level masterfully allows light in through the ceiling addressing the clients’ desire to maximise views and solar gains. This home ticks all the boxes in the sustainability criterion. The use of a heat recovery ventilation system, angled extrusions on the roof, its ability to be zoned to adapt to the number of its inhabitants and rainwater collection system are noteworthy of a project endeavouring to address sustainability. Heathmont Passive House takes full advantage of a difficult site, demonstrating a skilful and creative approach to passive design.

Multi-Residential Holman Designs Pty Ltd
Same but Different Same but Different delivers luxury, spacious townhouses in an evolving coastal village environment. The true success of the double storey multi-residential development by Holman Designs’ lies in its ability to promote a sense of “one integrated home” rather than part of a multi-residential project. The design uses an array of natural materials in a broad, neutral palette to provide a modern yet sympathetic connection to its surroundings. The façade materials tie into their respective surroundings: the charred timber to the tree canopies and rammed earth to the sandy soil is characteristic of the area. When considering key characteristics of the Bellarine Peninsula, the rammed earth wall speaks for itself as the standout feature.

Hope Street To deliver on a brief from a young family rapidly outgrowing their Edwardian terrace home in Melbourne’s inner suburbs, Sync Design sought to create a design that would preserve elements of the Hope Street’s history within a modernised floor plan. Maximising the limited space available, the refreshed layout embraces open-plan living with the living and dining area spilling out on to a north facing courtyard. The home is further enhanced with natural light and good ventilation brought in through glazed floor-to-ceiling doors from the courtyard. Paying homage to its history, the heritage-listed fireplace now acts as a stunning feature wall at the entrance of the master bedroom ensuite. Additionally, the old restored leadlight used within the house evokes the true essence of an old Victorian home. The materials and colour palette complement old and new and the recessed curtains are a clever touch as are the old skirtings which extend into the new extension, creating a consistent and inviting environment to live in.

Corner Store Corner Store is a beautifully considered response to both the site and client’s requirements. Working together, Amanda Lynn Interior Design and Maison Co’s Corner Store shows what is possible through careful planning and considered design. The design outcome sees the project restoring as opposed to demolishing key characteristics of the historical building. Corner Store’s history and original façade have been maintained and the themes and modest nature of the surrounding residential buildings have been picked up through reclaimed brick, black cladding and a vegetable garden in the internal courtyard. The internal courtyard introduces much-needed natural light and ventilation to the home, creating a space which acts as a second living area for the residents to dine, entertain and enjoy a quiet read. This project is an exemplary case of a home with all necessary amenities within a modest footprint, using basic materials while creating richness through the layering of history, texture and space. Corner Store also received a commendation for Residential Design - Best Small Lot.

Through careful window placement, northerly light has been brought into a building not naturally orientated to it. The light-filled, open living space now has clear views of the swimming pool and outdoor area. Kilburn Kilburn – an ‘inter-war villa’ – has been restored to its former glory. Peter Jackson Design has created an extension that maintains the estate’s heritage character and expands on it. To achieve a substantial extension within a relatively small building space, Peter Jackson Design has created a retreat and bedroom level on the upper floor, while placing the home theatre and cellar in the basement, allowing the ground floor space to be used for family living and outdoor entertaining. By re-instating previously removed or damaged original features and keeping the upper storey additions in-roof over the original house, a single storey appearance was maintained to preserve the heritage protected front façade. It’s difficult to do an extension that works in harmony with an existing building but Kilburn has a respectful balance between its original heritage and the modern contemporary extension.

Firewood and Candles is the sort of project that many would see as a complete rebuild but Rachcoff Vella Architecture’s clients saw its potential beauty. Keeping the shell of the former dairy shed mostly untouched to preserve the character and charm of the building’s previous use, the interior has been revitalised with a combination of raw materials and soft furnishings. A custombuilt fireplace provides light and warmth, in addition to the strategic pruning of the surrounding canopy which allows sunlight to filter through the clerestory windows. The home responds to and is beautifully grounded within its surroundings. Sustainability challenges in terms of heat retention and airtightness were addressed with the insertion of floor, wall and roof insulation. Kirrewur Court Restoration & Additions Returning the Kirrewur Court property to its former residential glory after being converted to a reception hall required an ambitious approach. Another Dimension Building Design conducted a thorough historical archaeological investigation to piece together the intricate details of the former residence’s design – its bay windows, decorative interlace design on the veranda and the original front entrance. This served as the inspiration for Another Dimension’s timeless restoration; one that pays respect to the estate’s history yet creates a striking modern extension that brings the outdoors in. The historical faรงade of an old corner store hides an exemplary, contemporary, adequately proportioned home for the current era. Working with tight site restraints, an extension to the original building at ground level was created just inside the brick walls. Three storage rooms were turned into a large living, dining and kitchen area. In a stroke of genius, a courtyard installed in the centre of the long, narrow home brings in much needed light and a secondary living area. Excellence in Use of Masonry
The internal courtyard which flows through to the interior space, is a spectacular example of what hard work and consideration can achieve.
Biophilia — Slate House Northcote Biophilia – Slate House Northcote is a standout project for its use of masonry. Melbourne Design Studio has created a stunning vision with the natural material. The internal courtyard which flows through to the interior space is a spectacular example of what hard work and consideration can achieve. Three different colours of LaPaloma bricks are laid down in a pattern inspired by dappled shadows created by trees to further accentuate the biophilic concept. Second-hand red bricks on the external walls and around the pool complement the contemporary courtyard. Slate used on the walls and roof work in harmony with other masonry elements to create a balanced and considered home. Biophilia demonstrates how an age old traditional material can be used in a contemporary way. Biophilia is also the winner for Residential Design – New House $1M-$3M Construction Cost and Residential Design Best Environmentally Sustainable.

Kyneton Red Brick House When a client with a bricklaying son approached Woodend Building Design to design their new Kyneton home, it came as no surprise that the brief included using recycled red bricks. Kyneton Red Brick House celebrates and beautifully balances the recycled brick, without overwhelming the design. The red bricks feature throughout the home both internally and externally in a bold approach to achieve a rustic yet contemporary design, providing the occupants all the wonders of a 21st century design in a heritage style environment. Kyneton Red Brick House is an excellent example of how recycled materials can be given a new lease on life.

Excellence in Use of Metal Project Now
Winner Excellence in Use of Metal
The excellence in this design lies in not how much metal has been used but rather in the way it is used.
Westlab What would otherwise be a traditional industrial building has been transformed with a liminal steel screen. Wrapping around Westlab’s warehouse façade, the steel screen is not just a striking visual accessory, but a functional form. The steel blades invite sunlight through the floor-to-ceiling windows while shielding direct lines of sight into the office. This allows the workers privacy
from their exposed corner block without compromising on natural light. As you move past Westlab, the steel screen’s colour evolves from green to blue which echoes the dynamic nature of Westlab’s occupants. The excellence in this design lies not in how much metal has been used but rather in the way it is used. A once standard building has become a standout due to deft creativity and innovation.

Aspect Parade Winner Excellence in Use of Timber
The timber used in Aspect Parade replicates an art gallery showcasing what can be achieved through variances in timber grade, texture, colour, grain and direction. Project Now have used dark stained spotted gum cladding as a feature and for practicality, blending the home seamlessly with its surrounds. The dark stained spotted gum contrasts with the natural timber deck, which as it ages will turn grey complementing the black, further demonstrating Project Now’s considered approach to the design over time. The timber theme has been carried throughout the home creating a relationship between inside and outside. By highlighting timber, Project Now have created both a sense of warmth and created a highly aesthetically pleasing home for its occupants.

Winner Excellence in Documentation
Green Sheep Collective took the time to understand their client’s preference to work directly with the builder themselves, and provided highly in-depth and thorough documentation to ensure the design integrity was achieved. By taking a collaborative approach, Green Sheep Collective’s clear, concise and comprehensive documentation simplified the process and ensured all parties understood the requirements of them. Due to the thorough documentation and limited changes from the builder during construction, the result is a magnificent design exactly as Magnolia Soul was intended to be.

Villa Essence
Most Innovative Design
Inside meets outside in Villa Essence’s bathroom. Through a clever use of stones and glass, Design Unity has created a beautiful bathroom which immerses the occupants in nature while protecting them from the elements. A private courtyard screens the ensuite from passers-by allowing the user to fully enjoy the view out of the expansive large glass windows. Stones on the floor carry through to the exterior connecting the home to the outside in a unique and stunning way. A timber screen, in the same form as the external cladding expertly conceals the wash closet and shower while further connecting the interior and exterior. Villa Essence demonstrates what can be achieved with clever thinking and creativity.

Best group project Matthew Gibbs, Luke Henry and Joel Lybyk The Gordon
Working on group projects when studying can be a challenge, the temptation is often to avoid them whenever possible! However, the fact is, in your working lives you will more often than not work on a project as part of a team. The project submitted by Matthew, Luke and Joel from The Gordon is strong and cohesive. There is no clear lineage to different authors within the design or the presentation. It has clearly been a good team effort. Well done.
Emerging Designers
Don’s digital presentation is of a high standard with a realistic 3D depiction of his design. The fly through of the interiors in particular gave a good feel for the spaces as they would be experienced as a built form. Overall an excellent digital presentation and a worthy winner.
