SBA lending continues to increase in Martin County
The Small Business Administration released their loan volumes for Fiscal Year 2014/2015 this past week. In Martin County, loan volume increased 78% over the prior fiscal year serving 41 businesses and over $9.7 million in lending as compared to 23 businesses and $8 million in lending in Fiscal Year 2013/2014.
Earlier this year, the SBA announced a new initiative called LINC, Leveraging Information and Networks to access Capital, providing matchmaking services for entrepreneurs and lenders. The SBA spent months surveying lending partners to discern what information they need before they are ready to receive a loan inquiry. Based on that information, the SBA developed a simple online form that takes just minutes to complete. Once the form is completed, it is sent to participating SBA lenders. Florida Commerce Park turns ITS Fiber receives Florida dirt in Indiantown Companies to Watch Award
Local officials, residents and business owners joined together on Nov. 12 to break ground on the new Florida Commerce Park in Western Martin County. The park is a 100-acre industrial park situated in an outstanding location in South Florida, Indiantown. The commerce park offers strategic positioning opportunities for data centers, distribution and energyrelated companies, and manufacturing and warehouse facilities among others. The park is one of the largest blocks of approved, shovel-ready acreage available within the southeast Florida region and offers sites that are permit-ready — from 1.4 acres to 100 acres — saving up to 12 months of processing time. Florida Commerce Park features an
ideal logistical location that is inland, elevated and along a Florida transportation axis that includes key highway, rail and waterway intermodal routes. It is immediately adjacent to FPL’s power plant, which includes the largest solarthermal power plant in the eastern U.S. Between those power sources, natural gas providers and other sustainable resources, Florida Commerce Park features a significant and uninterrupted supply of clean sustainable energy. In addition to being shovel-ready and offering critical redundant and sustainability features, Florida Commerce Park offers a robust and diverse surrounding labor pool, and stands ready as an ideal commerce and crossroads hub for business.

FPL investments in efficiency deliver continued savings The Florida Public Service Commission approved Florida Power & Light Company’s request to lower electric rates beginning in January 2016. The decrease is largely the result of the company’s ongoing investments in highly efficient power generation, which continue to result in reduced fuel consumption, along with lower fuel prices. “Our long-term strategy of advancing clean energy affordably and reliably with smart investments continues to pay off for our customers,” said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. This cost decrease of 10% over 10 years occurred while healthcare costs have increased by 40%.
Center in Indiantown. FPL’s “Power to Care” program gives employees the opportunity to make a difference in the communities in which they live and work. FPL’s Energy Makeover provided free energy upgrades that will save the center about $1,700 a year. Sister Mary Dooley stated “FPL, fixing our potential lighting rod so we can focus on people’s lives.”
Businesses will see a decrease in their bills next year, with anticipated savings of about 2 to 6 percent, depending on the business customer’s rate class and type of service. FPL also offers various industry resources and efficiency programs to generate energy savings that can help any business sector. Locally, company representative, Amy Brunjes, brought “Power to Care Day” to KinDoo Family
The company’s f leet of efficient power plants has also enabled FPL to achieve a carbon emissions rate that is 35 percent cleaner than the U.S. utility average. In fact, while other utilities around the country are facing potentially higher costs to comply with the U.S. EPA’s Clean Power Plan, FPL is already cleaner than the goal the plan has set for Florida to reach by 2030.
Since 2001, FPL’s investments in clean generation have saved customers more than $8 billion by using less fuel to generate electricity. These efficiency savings are in addition to the savings from recent low market prices for natural gas.

Florida is a big small business state and home to nearly 405,000 small business employers. Small businesses account for 98.9 percent of all employers and employ over 3 million Floridians, or 43 percent of our state’s private-sector workforce. Additionally, 1.8 million self-employed small business owners create a job for themselves. It is these small businesses who have contributed to over 70 p e rcent of the nearly one million privatesector jobs that have been created in Florida since December 2010, helping drive down one of the nation’s highest unemployment rates to one of the nation’s best we enjoy today. Seven years into recovery from the Great Recession, Florida continues to gain jobs
faster than the nation as a whole. As of October 2015, Martin County’s unemployment rate stood at 5.1%. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, veterans are 45 percent more likely to start a business than those with no prior active duty experience. The U.S. Census Bureau shows that, as of 2012, there were more than 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses in the United States. Florida ranked among the top states with the highest number of veteran-owned businesses with 187,074, or 8.9 percent of all businesses in the state. By industry, 12.6 percent of veterans were in the professional, scientific, and technical services industry.

Traditional charity search engines provide donors with a single search bar that requires the user to provide such information as a charity name or employer identification number. Charity Attributes goes far beyond that by providing potential donors with a comprehensive list of attributes to help identify charities that fit a donor’s goals or philosophy. New initiative to highlight economic impacts on the marine industry
The Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics is reaching out to the marine industry to provide updates to their Standards of Occupational Classification, a published database that covers all U.S. occupations. This important metric helps industries highlight their economic impact, in which the marine industry has historically been underrepresented.
The National Marine Manufacturers Association is asking for assistance from the marine industry to participate in this initiative. The NMMA is planning to “crowd source” industry job titles from companies and organizations so that they can more accurately provide the government with a complete set of data from the marine industry. This is a small commitment for what will have a great beneficial outcome to the marine industry. To participate, email your contact information to the BDBMC at info@bdbmc. org by December 9th.
