With a total of 1350 points, the Central Luzon Region snatched the top spot of the National Campus Press Olympiad’s (NCPO) 2021 Individual Print Events. The region was followed by CALABARZON with 1300 points, then by the National Capital Region (NCR) at 1225 points, Cagayan Valley with 700 points, and Ilocos Region finishing with 650 points. The National Capital Region (NCR) is National Campus Press Olympiad’s (NCPO) first-ever champion! In the closing ceremony held yesterday, June 27, NCR brought home the title with 163 medals (77 gold, 45 silver, 41 bronze medals) generally ranking first in both Mobile Journalism (MoJo) Events and Interactive Multimedia Publishing Events (IMP), third in Individual Print Media Events, and sixth in Visual Journalism Events. The region’s medal count comprised the following: 27 medals from MoJo events (11 gold, 9 silver, 7 bronze medals), 112 medals from IMP events (56 gold, 32 silver, 24 bronze medals), 21

medals from the print events (8 gold, 4 silver, 9 bronze medals), and 3 medals from the visual events. Albert Christian Execaile G. Saludaga, one of the NCPO winners from the champion region, expressed his excitement at the news in an interview after the ceremony. “I felt ecstatic, leaning the fact that I’m one of its (NCR) delegates. Even though I didn’t clinch a place [for the feature writing event], I became a winner by that,” the NCPO Mobile Photography second placer, said. When asked why he thinks his region earned their spot, Saludaga was quick to credit their long-

standing culture of striving for excellence and learning instead of fixating on winning. “We, the NCR scribes, are fearless. We are not afraid to take up challenges. We don’t just simply aim for the win or title; we’re after the learning that we could get for every contest that we represent,” he stated. “Upholding these characteristics made me grasp into the victory.” Meanwhile, Region 4-A (CALABARZON), Region 1 (Ilocos Region), Region 4-B (MiMaRoPa), Region 3 (Central Luzon), Region 8 (Eastern Visayas), and Region 6 (Western Visayas), respectively, followed NCR in the top performing regions of the event.

Honesty over recognition, says NCPO 2021 chair by KLARISSE ALUTAYA

In light of the online setting of the National Campus Press Olympiad (NCPO), the chairperson of the event highlighted the importance of practicing honesty and fairness over the number of awards as campus journalists. “Ang karangalan ay ‘di nasusukat sa galing at dami ng napanalong laban; kundi, kung gaano ka kapatas noong ikaw ay lumalaban,” Alvin Hizon said in his opening remarks for the closing ceremony of the event. He further emphasized and assured viewers of the closing ceremony live stream that they checked each entry for any form of

plagiarism and made sure that the winning outputs are all original and of good quality. “Tiniyak namin na ang bawat kalahok ay nasala nang maayos at walang kahit isang nakalusot na gumamit ng pandaraya o tinatawag nating pangongopya,” he stated. Hizon then reminded campus journalists of their duties and responsibilities beyond what is asked by the biggest online campus press competition yet. “Sa likod ng kompetisyong ito ay ang ating responsibilidad na mag-ulat, magsulat, at magmulat.” the NCPO 2021 chairperson concluded.

Region 4A dominates Visual Journalism Events by KLARISSE ALUTAYA

Finishing with a total of nine medals, CALABARZON was hailed as the top region for the Visual Journalism Events. The region accumulated one gold, four silver, and four bronze medals from the category. The top region is then trailed by two other regions with six medals but with different numbers of gold awards, namely Central Luzon with three golds and Ilocos Region with two. Campus journo lauds NCPO accessibility, reveals best practices by KLARISSE ALUTAYA

Compared to the traditional journalistic competitions, the National Campus Press Olympiad (NCPO) is free, nationalistic, scientific, and mass-oriented, according to a campus journalist from Pasig City. In an interview with Elyjah Jann S. Rosales, a constant participant of Pasig City’s Sagad High School for various press conferences and an active member of their respective editorial staff, she lauded the shift of NCPO’s approach to journalism which is “far from the usual commercialized, colonial, and antidemocratic contests.” “Journalistic competitions are expected to advocate, catalyze, and vanguard truth, change, and freedom,” she said in an exclusive interview with BDCP conducted yesterday. “It should not wreak

of imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucrat capitalism.” Rosales added that these three shortcomings are prevalent in traditional competitions: imperialism in the form seeking power and influence through winning; feudalism in the making of a hierarchical divide working against the united campus press community; and bureaucrat capitalism which is manifested via the “restrictive processes” that only the ruling class and its subordinates encroach in planning, operating, decision-making, and alike to “profit and achieve their ulterior motives and agenda.” Additionally, the high school campus journo turned Research Committee Head of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines National Office further elaborated on what she thinks are the best

practices she had observed from the NCPO that should be a standard to future journalistic competitions, namely: (1) affordability; (2) independence; and (3) democracy. At the end of her interview, Rosales highlighted the relevance of journalistic competitions for thriving and aspiring campus journalists. “I do think that these (journalistic competitions) are important avenues for campus journalists to go with where their passions and hearts belong to; grow through ups and downs alongside people who share the same craft and enthusiasm; and glow in the right place and time for them to inspire others to do the same or even better along the way.”

Just hours after the closing ceremony, Alvin Hizon, the NCPO 2021 Chairperson and Founding President of BDCP, Inc., revealed that they are tagging a “thorough” assessment of the recently concluded event as a priority for the initial plans of its sequel. “We will do a thorough review and evaluation on how to improve the event. That’s a first on the list,” Hizon said.
