Please join us in offering a warm welcome to your newest neighbors. We’re thrilled to have you here!

Adam & Sharon Christmann, 214 Spring Island Drive •

joined July 2019 Adam & Sharon moved to the Lowcountry in 2009, although they enjoyed their house in Long Cove for 25 years on a part time basis. Some people have a “bucket list” of climbing mountains, or special travels. We have been watching and waiting for Spring Island to come full circle to us and we are thankful to have our dream come to fruition. Adam has turned his wife into a passionate golfer, we both are nature lovers, and more importantly, this special island will be our peace and serenity for our twilight years to come.

Terry & Belinda Ezell,

17 Little Neck Crossing • joined June 2019

Terry and Belinda first met in the Emergency Room at the Medical College of Georgia in September 1990. Terry was a first-year Urology intern, and Belinda was an ER nurse at MCG. Terry’s 3rd month was his ER rotation, and he immediately began to query others if Belinda was dating anyone. Their first date was over a wager regarding the 1990 Clemson/ Georgia football game. Clemson won, and Belinda had to pay the restaurant bill on their first date! In spite of Terry’s poor judgment regarding the dinner bill, Belinda married him anyway in January 1993. After completing their Urology residency in June 1995, they joined Carolina Urology Center and settled in Rock Hill, SC. Their first son, Seth, was born in 1996, and their second son, Noah, was born in 1998. Belinda has a love for learning, holding several degrees including: B.S. RN from MCG, Masters of Clinical Social Work from USC, and a Master of Divinity in Biblical Counseling degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Belinda is presently counseling women through the York Baptist Association in Rock Hill. Terry has been practicing Urology for 25 years with Carolina Urology Partners, with specialization in prostate cancer. Belinda enjoys walking in the local park, and she is beginning to re-kindle her love of horses. Terry was once quite successful in competitive amateur golf, including winning the 1989 and 1998 Carolinas Amateur Championship. Terry was first introduced to Spring Island, and Old Tabby Links, at the 1994 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship, in which he finished tied for 2nd. When Belinda discovered the Spring Island website earlier this spring, she asked Terry if he was familiar with Spring Island. His response was overwhelmingly in favor of a visit to the Island ASAP! The rest is history, as they say. They bought their lot on Little Neck Crossing at the initial visit. They are very excited about their property at Spring Island, and they plan to start construction on their vacation home in 1-2 years.

Ted & Judy Howells,

27 Little Neck Crossing • joined August 2019 Judy and Ted are relocating to the East Coast after 28 years in Pacific Palisades, CA. Prior to California, they lived in Montclair NJ. They spend their summers on Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Both are originally from Bethlehem, PA and they have two grown sons and three granddaughters. Judy worked in the field of art education and is now a professional artist, exhibiting in galleries on both coasts. She is looking forward to the completion of the art barn and making new friends in the art community at Spring Island. Ted is a former chief financial officer in the entertainment industry. A Vietnam veteran, he has worked with veterans in need for over 20 years, both as a board member and officer in several organizations. Both are long-time environmentalists, starting in the early 1970’s, and are excited about all that the Spring Island Trust has to offer.

Don & Joyce Sipple,

6 Pinckney Point • joined June 2019

Don and Joyce are delighted to be part of the Spring Island community. Don is originally from Palos Verdes, CA; Joyce is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. Don’s work has and continues to focus on national and international, corporate and political clients - developing their strategies, positioning and messaging. Joyce, a writer/producer in both the broadcast and advertising industries. Their son, Fletcher is 26 years old, and is a research analyst covering the energy sector for Stephen’s, Inc.

Greg & Wendy Vezzosi,

10 Shrimp Pond Circle • joined August 2019 Greg and Wendy have been searching for their retirement home for the past 3 years and fell in love with the Spring Island philosophy of nature first. They have moved from Minneapolis, MN but have lived in 7 other states. Greg’s roots are in NJ and Wendy is from Puerto Rico. They have 3 young adult children who they hope will visit often. Their favorite vacations are hiking and skiing and they are looking forward to all the outdoor amenities Spring Island has to offer. Until their home is completed, they are residing in Beaufort but plan to spend as much time as possible enjoying the community.

About the SIT NATIVE PLANT PROJECT • How to Volunteer The Spring Island Trust Native Plant Project (NPP) was established in the spring of 2009. The goals of the Project are to preserve and propagate plants that are indigenous to Spring Island and the region, to increase the availability of native plants through regular plant sales, and to provide education for Spring Island members and others about native plants and how to grow them. No experience is required if you’re interested in getting involved in the Native Plant Project! Activities range from potting to taking inventory/monitoring in the nursery. You’ll get acquainted with other members and learn about gardening with native plants.

NATIVE PLANT SALE

If you are interested in the SITNPP please contact one of the team members: Linda Temte, Nancy Conde, Susan Leister, Judi MacGlashin, Cindy Rich, Gaylynn Golden, Michelle Borzillo, Annie Judd, or Mary Jean Morawetz. Spring Island members can purchase plants anytime. The next sale open to the public will be October 12 and volunteers are needed to help.

New Species Found on Spring Island Over the summer, college intern Collen Goff found a very small insect on some sweetgrass. After careful analysis, and the help of entomologists Dwight Williams and Merle Shepherd and some of their international colleagues it was identified as a new species of hyper parasitoid wasp. It just goes to show that not all the new species waiting to be discovered are in the tropics…some of them are right here on Spring Island!

RETREAT TO HITCHCOCK WOODS Hurricane Dorian was not all drama for Spring Island Equestrian. On Thursday September 5, members and employees were fortunate enough to find some time to take a trail ride in the Hitchcock Woods in Aiken, SC. Hitchcock Woods is one of the largest urban forests in the US with 2,100 acres of forested land and 65 miles of trails open to equestrians, hikers and dogs. There are a number of jumps for use along the trails and Aiken Hounds uses the area for hunts in the fall.

Splitting into 2 groups, 7 horses and riders started at the Dibble Road entrance and spent 2.5 hours exploring the longleaf pine woods. Elevation varies quite a bit there and while they could have stayed on relatively flat land, one group decided to head to the hills. The horses did a great job of going up and down hills and navigating over both wide and narrow trails as well as going over small downed trees. They covered over 7 miles and the equivalent of 33 flights of stairs. Even with one group getting a little lost while riding in what amounted to circles within circles, they had a marvelous time and showed some of our younger equestrians how to read a map from horseback. When all was said and done everyone found their way back to the trailer safe and sound. Spring Island Equestrian Center will be planning another trip to Hitchcock Woods as well as more beach rides at Hunting Island State Park later this year. Send Deryle an email or call the Barn to save your spot! dduncan@springisland.com | 843-987-4102

A SALTY CROP—HARVEST IN THE RIVER Here’s a novel and genius idea: why not grow our own oysters on Spring Island? The idea germinated when some folks went on a Trust tour to the Lady’s Island Oyster Company, the source for Chef Jeremy’s local oyster dishes. They came back with the suggestion that we should try doing something like this here, and since it was food related and akin to farming, Porter Galloway and Jim Basara dove in. They then spoke with Chris Marsh, just to make sure there weren't going to be any unforeseen issues. Chris stated that he's been wanting to try this for some time. The final hurdle was finding a place to do it and Mike Broomfield stepped right up with some dock space on the Chechessee. This first round of experimentation starts with 6 cages—2 of which are now in the water—with the capacity to raise about 2,000 oysters from seedlings to 3-inch selects. The whole process will be explained through a new discussion page on the Spring Island Local Connection website with the hope that others will get interested as well and grow their own oysters. Spring Islanders know the powerhouse water purifiers that oysters are. The more oyster farming the better, from a clean water point of view.

It's going to be a really interesting journey raising them. Follow along, ask questions, and the new “oyster gardeners” will do their best to answer them. https://www.springislandconnection.com/local/topics/85 https://www.facebook.com/pg/springislandoysters/

He only lost 9 golf balls, went through 3 gloves, and switched out 6 carts the whole day. As of September 10, an incredible $81,500 has been raised for Billy’s effort. It all came together in no small part because of the extraordinary support from Spring Island members. In particular, Peter Rood, Greg Saboeiro, and Jim Basara were enthusiastic Patriot Day forecaddies from sun-up to sundown helping Billy achieve his goals. Thank you all for your support!

MEET THE PRO: Jonathan Watkins We are thrilled to offer instruction by Jonathan Watkins, PTR Tennis professional, who has served the Spring Island tennis community for 3 years. The ambitious Jonathan shares his time between the Lowcountry Tennis Center and Spring Island as well as owns his own contracting business. He is known in the Lowcountry as a highly effective tennis coach, coaching state championship teams at the high school and adult USTA levels: in 2015, his Hilton Head Preparatory girls’ team won the SC state championship, and in 2016 his men’s USTA team won both state and regional tournaments, advancing to nationals. He has served locally as Tournament Director for both adult and junior sanctioned tournaments. He also serves on the tournament committee for Bridge Bowl, a local charity tournament which raises funds for families who are in need for the holidays. Jonathan is an active competitor, participating in the Hilton Head Pro League, alongside teaching professionals and former tour players. He proudly shared the championship with his teammates in 2018. Though if you ask him, Jonathan’s proudest venture is his family: his beautiful wife, Martha, and his three children. Spring Island’s tennis community expresses great admiration for Jonathan, noting his exceptional teaching skills. Last fall, a group of members took part in a USTA Adult tournament at Fripp Island. The group—Kathryn and Casey West, Bill Crossman, Jim and Gaylynn Basara, Mary and Tim Bernard, and Porter Galloway—all competed in various divisions, hitting the courts for multiple matches. Kathryn West and Gaylynn Basara teamed up to bring home the Ladies 3.0 Championship. Jonathan supported the teams throughout the process, even showing up as a spectator to encourage the players between his own matches. (He and Greg Crosby, our pickleball professional, were finalists in their division.) This combination of skill and commitment to member experience is a unique find, and Spring Island holds this treasure. You can experience his commitment to our community and love for the game, as he is currently available for small group or private instruction. If you are new to tennis, returning to the game, or want to improve your skills, contact Jonathan at 843-263-1118 or jwatkinsx47@gmail.com.

THE QUAIL WALK: A Shooter’s Challenge Incorporated into the Spring Island sporting clays course is a new Quail Walk game. It uses 4 traps including the wobble trap. The shooter walks on the course with a loaded gun watching for clays to be released. The game is lot like hunting and is a great warm-up for quail and bird season. Quail hunters, our FITASC course is ready! This is an international form of sporting clays enjoyed around the world. We have 2 courses (parcours) using our 5 stand traps and we can implement 3 or 5 pegs (shooting positions). It is a terrific shotgun game that will challenge and is in the spirit of bird shooting. Let our sporting clays pros help with the easy rules so you can enjoy a new game. Sports Complex | 843-987-2003

Fun times on the court and course for this year’s summer TENGO.

Pop-Up Fun! We’ve all had Pop Tarts. Nutritionally worthless but tasty nevertheless. Here on Spring Island, Pop-Up Dinners have become very popular, with surprise destinations like the Tabby Ruins and the Galloway’s beautifully renovated home. But nothing tops the latest “Pop,” the Pop-Up Wedding! Leave it to Gaylynn Golden and Jim Basara to pull off the surprise of the summer with their nuptials on August 30, at home, with Charles Kalmbach presiding by streaming video before a raucous and grateful throng. Wow! There were hints that something was afoot. Jim wore long pants, then he didn’t cook. The surprise was perfectly executed, however, Jeremy’s food was fabulous, and after 30 years together the couple decided each had passed the test. Congratulations, Gaylynn and Jim! - Tim Maloney

A WORK OF ART:

Those who decided to stay on Spring Island as Hurricane Dorian passed perilously close by wondered who else would remain on-island; whether there would be any damage to homes, the causeways, or common buildings; how they would know if anyone needed help. For those who were not here, whether they evacuated or had not yet returned from their summer away, time was spent watching The Weather Channel, checking the National Hurricane Center website, trying to figure out how to read spaghetti lines and probability cones, wondering if trees or wind or water had damaged their home or endangered any friends. For everyone, it was stressful, a battle to know the facts, hoping for the best. On our Spring Island Connections website, Jim “Newlywed” Basara posted a discussion entitled “Dorian: Staying or Leaving.” Over the next few days there were 80 responses and over 1900 views, by far the highest level of engagement of any article ever placed on the site. Connections helped many of us to know who stayed on island, to learn from people on the ground about the weather conditions, to end the anxiety about loss or harm. Together, we used Connections to stay informed, clarify rumors, to comfort and assist. As Jerry said to George, “I think you may have something here,” except this time the topic isn’t a show about nothing it’s about an asset we can all use to support, inform, and sustain our community. If you have thoughts about how to improve the Connections website, please share those ideas with either Charlie Manker or Jim Basara. If you have sampled the site, please get more involved, post your ideas, questions, or comments. If you have not yet visited Connections, find the link on the home page of the member website or go directly there:

SPRING ISLAND’S LITERARY MAGAZINE

Nearly 30 submissions were sent in for the inaugural “Fox Squirrel Review,” from poems to short stories, essays to fictional stories. A special thank-you goes to Helen Wagner, Neen Hunt, and Gloria Pinza for conceptualizing and bringing this exciting project to life, and for Pam Ullman’s great talent in designing the cover art. The hope for this piece is that all members and their families are encouraged to jot down their thoughts and musings throughout the year so a new edition can be published annually. Inspiration is everywhere, especially on Spring Island! Look for the digital copy of the Fox Squirrel Review available this fall along with options to purchase hard copies. For the Love of Community A wonderful group of Spring Island members tutor first and second graders at Ridgeland Elementary School Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. We really need more volunteers to help these sweet little students practice reading and writing. Ridgeland is a lovely facility but sadly a large percentage of the students are failing, only 20% of the students are at passing level in the 3rd grade. Over 85% of the families at Ridgeland live in poverty and most of the students do not have books at home. It is life-changing for little children to have an adult sit and read with them, listen and care. If you have a morning free we would love you to join us. Please contact Ann Hand, Sukie Azar or Jan House.

READING POWER is another local program that specifically targets literacy in pre-kindergarten children. The program’s purpose is to empower four-year old children who may be at risk for language learning delays so that they: learn to love language – reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing; learn to love books; understand they can have an opinion, understand that their feelings count, and move closer to conventional English usage. The goals of the program are to help foster a love for books and ideas so that these children will be interested in his/her world, expanding their oral language and growing their curiosity by asking questions like “I wonder if…”. Our methods in the program are clear and volunteers will be equipped with how to make the most of their time. These methods include rich discussions about the child’s interests and activities; reading books to the child (fiction, non-fiction and poetry); and rich discussions before, during, and after reading the books. Volunteer tutors will work individually with five students from pre-kindergarten classrooms on Tuesday or Thursday mornings. The tutors will receive ongoing training. Tutors will donate one-half day a week for tutoring. Books are then given to children to own. To learn more, please contact program coordinator Mary Jane Hender. Thank you for considering your time to make a lasting impact in our community.
