Concept Transforming Expectations
"Biases can be transformed once we perceive things through a different lens. The frightening becomes engaging, beauty becomes humbled, and opposites become friends as new opportunities are created.“ Native American tribes recognize the caiman as a symbol of adaptability and strength, while the butterfly represents change, balance, and beauty.

Coffee and food tend to boost one’s energy. I designed a café adjacent to an open office and co-working space to raise motivation and productivity in the workers using the space. This café features booths and table seating. It opens out to the co-working space where desks are divided by panels giving users a little privacy, but still gives opportunity to connect to other workers and build relationships. The Herman Miller bar height seating is added in the collaboration area making it easier to work with others on a project.
Co-working/Café Lighting
The lighting used in the co-working space and behind the café counter has a 3500k color temperature, so occupants are comfortable to read, write, and prepare food. The lighting used in the café seating has a 4000k color temperature to increase productivity and increase alertness within the space. Both light fixtures are dimmable.

Floor Plan – Focus Areas

Healthcare Focus Area: Reception and Waiting Area The reception desk is located directly in front of the elevator doors, and adjacent to the stairs leading to the lower level. Acting as one central point within the healthcare facility, the reception desk overlooks the waiting area but is tucked into the adjacent walls to maximize walking space. It is important for those going to a healthcare facility to feel welcomed and comfortable, and the best way to accomplish that is to see a smiling, friendly receptionist the moment someone walks in. The materials used are a reflection of the concept image. Natural earth-tones are used for the wall paint, ceiling, and flooring. An overlay with a reeded print is used on the reception desk to replicate the grass and twigs in the concept image. A dark gray trim is used throughout, around the base and doors, to create more contrast in the space. A unique accent lighting fixture adds interest behind the reception desk.

Healthcare Focus Area: Nurse's Station Much like the reception desk, the nurse's station is a central point of the facility. Overlooking the nine exam rooms and minor surgery room, the nurse's station has complete control over the environment. To incorporate the motif, a curved soffit was added to the ceiling. It extends past the counter depth of the nurse's station, reaching almost to the opposite wall. Two columns were placed, one to hide a structural lateral beam. Behind the nurse's station is the staff lounge, which includes ample countertop space for any meal prepping, a refrigerator, a base microwave, and a double-bowl sink. Since this area of the facility is open throughout, it made the most sense to use the same materials as what is in the reception area. Accent lighting provides interest with a unique shape and diffuse light.

Healthcare Focus Area: Exam Rooms The exam rooms are located all around the nurse's station. For the most part, they have the same layout, which includes an exam table, a sink base and upper cabinets for storage, a Spinnaker armchair, a doctor's stool, and a wall-mounted display. This display can be rotated toward or away from the patient, depending on the doctor's preference and the information being shown. The door opens inward, at the center of the room, to minimize any views from the hallways, to maximize patient privacy and comfort. The materials used within this space are light and neutral. In order to prevent a feeling of barrenness but maintain a feeling of cleanliness and sanitization, very minimal colors were used. The same materials for cabinetry are applied, to keep everything cohesive and easily replaceable in the future, if necessary (doors, drawer faces, etc.).

Wellness Focus Area: Meeting Room The meeting rooms in the wellness section of the facility are intended for group sessions, whether that's for therapy, counseling, or any other sort of program. The flexible seating arrangements, with stacking chairs, allows for different layouts. Depending on the type of meeting that will be held within the space, chairs may be rearranged to fit. In the adjacent meeting room (see floor plan), there are desks alongside the chairs to accommodate for a teaching-style program. Acoustic panels are installed on the walls to ensure privacy and eliminate echo within the space. The light, warm white wall paint is complimented by the deep orange wall paint, which corresponds to the butterfly in the concept image. Going back to the concept itself, "The butterfly represents change, balance, and beauty." This room holds the power to create new opportunities to people who need them most.

Wall Paint Solutions from the WELL Building Standards are a corridor leading to an exterior balcony, large operable windows, partitions for privacy, no VOCs, and a high CRI for all fixtures.
The transitional housing suites are designed to be a haven for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. Our concept of transforming expectations fueled our design decisions as we created private comfortable spaces for individuals of all walks of life to live in dignity. The floorplan includes three single suites, one staff suite, a double suite, and three family suites. The apartment style suites include full kitchens, private sleeping areas, and full bathrooms. Inspired by our concept image, the motif from the caiman's scales is seen in the upholstery, backsplash, chairs, lighting, and partition walls. The wall paint and tile flooring was chosen based off the colorful butterflies resting on the caiman's head.
