HIT THE TRAILS
Ask just about any desert local about unique things to do around the valley and there’s a very strong chance checking out the local hiking and biking trails will be one of their first suggestions. And for good reason. The Coachella Valley has an enviable trove of trailheads with a surprising variety of scenic surroundings. From meandering treks into the local foothills and the mountains beyond, to snug slot canyons with Martian landscapes straight out of a sci-fi film, there are plenty of exceptional places to explore.
The desert offers an embarrassment of riches when it comes to hiking and bike-friendly trails. Regardless of where you call home around the Coachella Valley, you are just a quick trip away from some of the most scenic spots in Southern California. There are a ton of exceptional hikes to try, including a variety of trails throughout the famed Indian Canyons such as Murray Canyon and Andreas Canyon, popular spots like the Bump ‘N Grind and The Cross Hike in Palm Desert, wandering trails in and around La Quinta Cove, and more. If you are willing to travel, Joshua Tree National Park (an hour to the north of the Coachella Valley) is a must for any outdoor enthusiast, with its unique landscape populated by its namesake,
the protected Joshua Tree, along with ocotillo plants, gorgeous palo verde and ironwood trees, and cholla cactus. A little closer to home, the Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve gets you up close to towering trees in the middle of a real desert oasis, paired with excellent hiking that fingers out to trails beyond. Further to the east in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Area of Southern California is the revered Ladder Canyon and Painted Canyon Trail, a unique experience that squeezes hikers into a slot canyon sometimes only feet in width, with elevation gains accessed via ladders set up throughout the trail.

Regardless of the city you call home, or are staying in, there’s probably a park just a short distance away. Here’s a rundown of some of our favorite parks by city, heading west to east in the valley.
Palm Springs delivers 11 public parks, including Sunrise Park which offers a variety of facilities and features, such as play structures, picnic tables, a basketball court, and a baseball/softball field. The park is surrounded by many other popular destinations, including the Palm Springs Skate Park, the Palm Springs Swim
Center, the Boys and Girls Club, Mizell Senior Center, and Palm Springs Power Stadium. Palm Springs is also home to Ruth Hardy Park, which has tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, a basketball court, play structures, and more.
Cathedral City has 9 community parks boasting a host of amenities. Head to Ocotillo Park for a day of fun, including your classic park atmosphere plus a skate park, walking path, and more. Panorama Park offers tennis, a dog park, volleyball, and more activities to entertain.
The City of Rancho Mirage has 5 public parks. The most notable destination is Rancho Mirage Community Park, which also hosts the Rancho Mirage Amphitheater in addition to pickleball, tennis, and a shaded play area.
Palm Desert , centrally located in the Coachella Valley, is a haven for outdoor recreation, with 12 parks, 2 community centers, and the Palm Desert Aquatic Center. Civic Center Park is a sprawling public park space with a ton of open green grass, play areas for kids, volleyball and
basketball courts, ball fields, and a duck pond. Freedom Park is also a wonderful spot to enjoy a postcard-perfect desert afternoon, with ball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, sand volleyball, and children’s play areas.
To the east, the City of La Quinta offers 16 parks to enjoy, including the newly opened X Park for extreme sports enthusiasts. Fritz Burns Park offers a swimming pool, dog park, and pickleball courts. La Quinta Park, across from La Quinta High School, has ample open field space, ball fields, a basketball court, a skatepark, shaded play areas, and a splash pad to keep your little ones cool and entertained.

The Coachella Valley is synonymous with golf, earning the title as the most golf-centric region in the United States. Boasting 122 golf courses, golf is a key driver of the desert’s economic engine and a giant draw for residents and visitors alike. From pitch and putt par 3 setups geared toward beginners, to full-length courses that draw weekend warriors as well as bona fide professional golfers, there are plenty of opportunities to grow and challenge your game.
Although the desert has lots of private country clubs that require membership to access, there are numerous public play options to try. City-owned courses, such as Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort in Palm Springs, Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, Indian Wells Golf Resort, and SilverRock Resort in La Quinta, offer world-class caliber playing surfaces at reasonable fees. They even offer residents discounted rates. Many clubs across the desert are open to the public as well, offering exceptional playing conditions to test your abilities.
The City of Indio has plenty of public park space to enjoy as well. South Jackson Park is a classic community park with lots of green space, a playground, and shaded tables, as well as tennis courts. Adjacent to the park is South Jackson Soccer Park
In addition to the traditional game of golf, there are opportunities to play with a twist. The Lights at Indio Golf Course is the Coachella Valley’s first American FootGolf League (AFGL) accredited FootGolf course, offering players the chance to try FootGolf. This is also a playing option at Desert Willow Golf Resort, Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort, and The Golf Center at Palm Desert. If kicking the ball isn’t your speed, try the Palm Desert Disc Golf Course at the Palm Desert Soccer Park off Hovley Lane. Disc Golf is golf played with frisbees, offering a delightful way to enjoy golf with a different approach. Some local parks
and courses will set up temporary disc golf courses for select dates as well.

If you were lucky enough to snag wristbands to the seminal Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, aka “Coachella,” and Stagecoach Country Music Festival, congratulations – we hope you enjoy the experience. Taking place at the famed Empire Polo Club, these highly popular celebrations of music and art are renowned around the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of festival-goers each year to enjoy platinum and ascending headlining acts. The concerts take place the first Saturday of each month through June, prime time to experience perfect desert nights with entertainment in tow. During the idyllic fall months, there are tons of outdoor events and concerts to enjoy as well, including the Palm Desert Concerts in the Park series at the Civic Center Park Amphitheatre.
