Over the last decade, Laura Kirar’s designs have been profiled in many top publications including Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, House Beautiful and Interior Design. We recently sat down with the award-winning designer to discuss her creative process, modern design and what to expect in 2015.

LP: How would you define your personal style?

LK: It’s evolved over many years. I consider myself a modernist, but in a very different kind of way than most people consider it. I love to collect items, both old and new to curate a mix of objects in a space. When working on a project, we think about every single aspect of a space, so it’s thoughtfully curated. There aren’t any arbitrary decisions about what goes on a wall or is placed in a room. The style is unique to the space we’re creating.

LP: You’re background is in sculpture – how did the transition into interior design occur?

LK: I guess you could call it an organic happening. When I was a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I was making a lot of conceptual pieces that revolved around domesticities, thinking about the roles of people in the home. My sculptures would address those things – metal chairs, household vessels, things like that. I always had a passion for architecture, so it seemed like an even merging of the two.

LP: How do you bring your ideas to life?

LK: I usually start sketching in pen – a black pilot ink pen – I don’t like pencil and I always have my sketchbook with me. I’m always sketching and never know when an idea is going to come together, but eventually it comes to life. Then, I’ll usually present something to the client with color – markers, colored pencils, sometimes watercolor – but it’s never very technical. The details are usually opened to possibility and refined throughout the process. I’ll get the general look and once I know the client is happy with the direction, that’s when we drill down on the details – a nail head here, stitches there.

LP: How do you go about creating a space that fits your clients’ style?

“ I’m always sketching and never know when an idea is going to come together, but eventually it comes to life.”

LK: I’m lucky to have a handful of clients that I’ve worked with numerous times over the years. At this point I feel like we know each other beyond a strictly working relationship and I know what they like. With a new client, the starting point is almost like dating. You have to start a relationship and ask them about themselves, how they entertain, what their family is like. Do they sit down for dinner together or eat on the run? Are they morning people? You kind of have to be a detective or analyst. And sometimes, they tell me one thing, but in reality I’m seeing something else. Particularly with residential work, it’s not just about the reality of how people live, but about their aspirations and what they want to be.

LP: If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

LK: I’d probably still be some kind of an artist. I’d love to be a filmmaker. I think the process is similar to building a house. You need to rein in teams of people to collaborate creatively toward a final product.

LP: What does “home” mean to you?

LK: It’s interesting, because clearly it’s something that’s very, very important to me. It’s my life. Designing them for other people, making them for myself. It’s the ultimate place where there is peace and comfort, visual beauty and serenity in a supportive environment. That’s what I’m trying to create. Home needs to be a haven that supports your experiences in life.

LP: What design trends do you expect to see in 2015?

LK: The idea of things being more personalized and more unique. We’ll see more and more of that. Less about a blanket trend that everyone follows and more about individuality. Individuality is king right now. More customized, unique, special.
