The 41st Annual Bangor Home Show comes to town By David M. Fitzpatrick BDN SPECIAL SECTIONS
It’s that time of year again! The Home Show is coming to the Bangor Auditorium for its 41st extravaganza from April 15-17. Perhaps now more than ever, the tough economy will bring in the showgoers — it’s already bringing in the exhibitors, with all available booth space at the show now sold out. “I think that’s the enduring quality of that show,” said Bass Park Director Mike Dyer. “In good times, people are looking to spend a lot of money and maybe even hire a contractor. In tough times, you still have to keep the roof from leaking and replace the gutters when you have a winter like this and you’ve lost half of them to ice.” Everybody’s feeling the economic pinch, but Dyer said that doesn’t stop people from realizing the benefits of the Home Show. Even in the worst of economic times, people still have to do things to their houses, Dyer said. “Either just to maintain them or to try
and do something in-house,” he said, “even if they don’t hire a contractor to try and get ideas for what they can do to enhance the value of their homes.” Dyer said the show’s success is thanks to the tireless efforts of show promoter Dean Appleman, owner of All Seasons Promotions. “He is a crusader, he is a go-getter,” Dyer said. Lest you think Appleman takes just a few weeks to get ready for this show, that isn’t how it works. He spends all year planning the show. And the timing is by design. “Dean has tried shows at both times of the year, and in this market in the springtime, this show works the best,” Dyer said. “None of the success of that show happens by accident. Some of it’s gut instinct, and some of it is just learning the hard way.” Dyer is no stranger to events that draw people from all over Maine to the Bangor Auditorium, but he says the Home Show remains a stunning draw. “It’s one of those things — normally it’s at a good time of the year where people are actually feeling good about getting out and not worried about the
weather,” he said. Despite the recent interruption by a pile of heavy, wet snow, the crocuses are up, tulip greens are growing, and the buds are appearing on the trees. After the winter damage, spring is working to replace mud season, and Dyer said people are ready to move beyond being tired of winter. “The average homeowner has probably seen a little bit more damage to the exterior to the house,or seen something that all this stress from all the snow and the ice everything has done, that just says, ‘Boy, I’ve got to do something … maybe I can do it myself,’” he said. Dyer said that these days, with gas prices skyrocketing, it makes more sense to use the Home Show as a one-stop window-shopping venue. Instead of driving all over the
place trying to learn about the home projects you have in mind, you can get a pretty good education under one roof. “It actually becomes a huge bargain to pay seven bucks … and see all of these people in one spot and just have it be a trip to Bangor,” he said. “It becomes a very practical thing to do if you’re just looking at your investment and your time and gas.” Dean Appleman and All Seasons Promotions has established a strong history putting this show on in Bangor for over four decades, so Dyer said, if nothing else, showgoers can “kick some tires” and see what’s out there. “You never know — you could be inspired to realize there is actually something you should do for your home and that you can actually afford to do,” he said.

Exhibitors ready for another overwhelming and successful Bangor Home Show
It’s another year of the wildly successful, thoroughly educational, and delightfully entertaining Bangor Home Show. The thousands of people who attend do it because of the wide variety of exhibitors, who jam-pack the auditorium, the Civic Center, and the corridors and open spaces in between. Here are just a few of the participants you’ll see this year. 304 Stillwater Avenue Furniture in Bangor, the business you’ll easily locate, returns to the Home Show with its sister store, Mill Mall Furniture of Ellsworth. And Manager Richard Goodwin has a clear plan to deal with the sagging national and global economy: Take care of the local economy first. If Goodwin could get 100 percent of his furniture from Maine, he’d do it, but as a full-line store he does have to leave the state. But still, about 40 percent of his products are made in Maine, including the entire second floor of almost all unfinished furniture of all types.
“We’re just a little, rinky-dink furniture store, but when you buy a piece of that, do you know you feed five businesses?” Goodwin said, referring to the logger, the mill, the retailer, the artisan, and the store. Owner and developer Forrest Grant invested $1 million into the Stillwater Avenue building and provided eight jobs when the store opened. It stocks beds, chairs, shelves, hutches, bureaus, and just about anything you can think of at impressive prices. At the show, Goodwin will bring as much as he can jam into his space, and more if extra space is available. He’ll highlight his quality Maine-made unfinished furniture, along with finished versions. The store takes custom orders, and a full-time employee does custom finishing. “This is made-in-Maine product, key to the Maine family,” Goodwin said. “We’re putting the money right directly back into the community more than any other furniture business is in the state.”
Goodwin said he enjoys the Home Show, and has a great relationship with promoter Dean Appleman. “He likes us because we have lots of stuff and we’re happy to bring it,” he said. —David M. Fitzpatrick Dave’s World of Dover-Foxcroft will display “some really cool products” at the Home Show, according to Robert Jankunas. These “cool products” are the energy-efficient GE Hybrid Water Heater and the Fujitsu Mini-Split Air Conditioner and Heat Pump. Scott said the GE Hybrid Water Heater “is the most efficient way to heat water in the home.” Inside the tank, two thermistors heat water electrically only when the heater operates in the high-demand or hybrid modes. A computerized heat pump transfers ambient heat from surrounding air to condensers surrounding the insulated tank; the coils then transfer their heat to the Continued on next page PHOTO BY BRIAN SWARTZ

water inside. GE says the device can reduce household water heater operating costs up to 62 percent, equating to about $320 in annual savings for a family of four. “We will display one and offer awesome pricing on it during the Home Show,” Jankunas said. Dave’s World will also have a drawing for a free GE Hybrid Water Heater. The air-to-air Fujitsu Heat Pump air conditions and heats, extracting heat from outdoor temperatures as low as -10 degrees Fahrenheit. “Heat always moves to where it’s cold,” Scott said. “The outside unit becomes the evaporator in winter by transferring outdoor heat to coolant that disperses the heat inside a building.” In summer, the inside unit air-conditions a room, and
