BASKETBALL OUTLOOK • Bangor Daily News Special Section • December 14, 2017 While watching the proliferation of the 3-point shot in Maine high school baskball games over the years, my thoughts often go back to an old Stearns High School teammate, Mike Baron. Mike was an outstanding perimeter shooter who earned a Bangor Daily News All-Maine first-team selection while helping lead our Minutemen of Millinocket to an Eastern Maine Class A title in 1977. He was the epitome of a pure shooter with an uncanny accuracy and a soft touch whose production could have been an extra 5 to 10 points per game with the 3-point shot. However, the 3-point shot wasn’t implemented in Maine until the 19871988 season, leaving Mike and other outstanding players out of the biggest rule change to affect the high school game in the last 30 years. Some teams and coaches may have been a little reluctant to fully embrace the 3-point shot in those early years because it meant changes on how they ran their offenses of seeking highpercentage shots. It didn’t take long, however, for Maine coaches to smartly adapt and put in offensive sets that still produced highpercentage shots — layups and post baskets — while providing plays to boost 3-point production. Coaches and players soon learned that 3-point shooters who could hit 33 percent of their shots were just as beneficial to their teams as two-point shooters who made 50 percent of their shots. It’s now not unusual to see at least 10 3-point attempts per game in all classes, AA through D, boys and girls. The 3-point shot has also arguably become the most exciting play in Maine high school basketball. Yes, it’s still riveting to see a player break away for a dunk but it can’t match the skill of seeing a player launch a shot from behind the 19-foot-9 arc that snips through the bottom of the net. The 3-pointer has also increased the drama of late-game comebacks as leads are not as secure because of the added weapon of quickly nailing a few 3-pointers in the closing minutes. It’s not unusual these days to see 10- or even 15-point leads evaporate in the final few minutes.

Some may argue that high school teams have become over-reliant on the 3-point shot and that it is eroding other parts of the game but Maine’s coaches know the game too well to let this happen. They are continuing to stress strong fundamentals and understand the value of stifling defense. While 3-point shot attempts have increased, games still feature good offensive balance, with pick-and-rolls to the basket, players moving away from the ball to get open and post production. The game is still producing many wellrounded players like my old teammate Mike Baron. While Mike was a great outside shooter, he didn’t become one of the state’s best just because of that skill. He was a 6-foot-5 forward/center who could drive by his slower defenders if they played him too tight on the outside. He could post up and score on either block, was a tough rebounder on both ends of the glass and a strong defender. If he played today, he certainly would be launching his share of 3-point shots while still featuring a strong all-around game that complemented his teammates. If you have a chance, check out a Maine high school game this season. You may see a player like Mike.

Abound In North Basketball Ranks

It doesn’t take too many conversations or email exchanges to learn that heavy favorites abound in North regional boys basketball play this winter. From two-time defending state champions Portland in Class AA and George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill in Class C, to Hampden Academy in Class A and Hermon in Class B, expectations may be high but the challenges remain formidable throughout an 18-game regular season. “Right now we’re 0-0 just like everyone else and we’ve got to go out and win games,” said Hermon coach Mark Reed. “That’s what we preach to the kids, but certainly there’s some excitement in having a fairly deep core group of players back.”

Bangor won its final six games to post an 8-10 record last winter, and while coach Carl Parker’s club just missed a postseason appearance in 2017 all eight Class AA North teams will advance to the playoffs in 2018. “The key now is, are you playing well at the end,” said Parker. Bangor fields a roster of seven juniors and four sophomores, a contingent led by transfer Matthew Fleming and point guard Damian Vance, both juniors. Fleming, a 6-foot-5 forward, earned BDN All-Maine second-team honors as a sophomore at Oxford Hills of South Paris, and his presence gives the Rams not only a lowpost threat but a level of high-quality versatility that should boost the program. Vance is poised to blossom into one of the state’s top point guards after being sidelined by injury during the middle of last season. His return to the lineup and the emergence of sophomore wing Henry Westrich proved pivotal to the Rams’ late success a year ago.

“We’re pretty excited,” said Parker. “We’re not where we need to be yet, but we’re a lot further along than we have been, especially at this time of year.” Portland returns as the regional favorite behind senior point guard Terion Moss, an early favorite for the 2018 Mr. Basketball award, while Edward Little of Auburn also returns key veterans in sharpshooting forward Darby Shea and frontcourt mate Wol Maiwen. Windham boasts perhaps the state’s top backcourt combination in Nick Curtis and Mike Gilman.

Hampden Academy exited the tournament early last winter in a quarterfinal loss to Cony of Augusta, but the Broncos’ starting lineup returns intact led by BDN All-Maine senior center Ian McIntyre, a four-year starter. Senior forward Tommy Raye and junior guard Kory Winch are other key returners, and McIntyre have additional help up front from 6-5 junior Marc Hutchings, a transfer from Bangor. “I feel if we can stay healthy and continue to work hard each day we can contend for a Northern Maine title,” said Broncos coach Russ Bartlett. “We just need to understand it’s a day-by-day process of trying to get better every time we step in the gym.” A balanced Gardiner team that gradu-

ated just three seniors and Nokomis of Newport, which features the senior guard tandem of Zach Hartsgrove and Josh Smestad, may be Hampden’s chief challengers within the division. Fast-breaking Cony should be another serious challenger after reaching the regional semifinals as the No. 7 seed last February behind guard Jordan Roddy, now a senior, while Noah Bonsant leads an Erskine Academy team that also graduated only three seniors. Brewer, which finished 7-11 to earn a preliminary-round berth, looks to be rebuilding behind senior guard Kobe Rogerson and junior guard Isaac Cummings.

Hermon went 16-2 during the 2016-2017 regular season to earn the top seed in the division but was ousted in the semifinals, providing additional motivation for a program that graduated just one senior and returns all five starters.

Fort Kent graduated just one player from last year’s 10-8 team and could make the trip to Bangor from the St. John Valley. Another County team, Houlton, is back in Class C after an 11-7 season in Class B last winter and could contend with a roster featuring sophomore guard Keegan Gentle. Central Aroostook of Mars Hill, up from Class D, also hopes to make noise in its new division. “I think the kids probably expect a lot from themselves,” said Reed. “I don’t know if that necessarily translates as much into titles as it does into what they expect from each other every day in the gym. They do a really good job of pushing each other.” The Hawks are led by senior guard Keenan Marseille and senior forward Jordan Bishop, both team captains as juniors, along with senior guard Tyler Hawes, junior guards Garrett Trask and Cody Hawes, and sophomore wing Isaac Varney. The Hawks also added 6-6 senior transfer Jacob Godfrey, who helped Machias win the Class D state championship last winter. Among other contenders are Oceanside of Rockland-Thomaston and Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor, the defending state champion. Oceanside is now in Class B by enrollment after winning the 2016 Class A North title and reaching the regional final again last winter, and return a solid nucleus including senior forward Michael Norton Jr., junior forward Cooper Wirkala and junior guard Jack Lombardo. MDI returns six players from the first state championship team in school history, a contingent led by senior guard Andrew Phelps. “I like our athletes and feel like we will be able to put pressure on the other teams defensively as well as push the ball on offense,” said MDI coach Justin Norwood. Other potential contenders from the Big East Conference include Presque Isle, Ellswor th, Winslow, Belfast and a Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield team that features 6-6 junior Jose Montes Valverde and sophomore Owen Williams, who could be one of the region’s emerging standouts.

George Stevens capped off its undefeated 2016-2017 season by edging Winthrop in the state final on Jarrod Chase’s buzzerbeating 3-pointer. Chase is now at Husson University, but the Eagles return plenty of talent in its bid for a third straight gold ball. Begin with senior guard Taylor Schildroth, a first-team BDN All-Maine honoree last season after ranking among the state’s top scorers at 26 points a game. Then there’s 6-6 center Max Mattson, the Maine Maritime Academy-bound senior who not only provides the complementary inside offense but is one of the region’s top rim protectors regardless of class. Senior forward Stefan Simmons, juniors Percy Zentz and Reece Dannenberg and sophomore Caden Mattson are among other returning rotational players for veteran coach Dwayne Carter’s club. As for challengers, Fort Fairfield suffered heavy graduation losses after falling to GSA in a highly competitive regional final last winter, but the Tigers have a top returning player in senior guard Isaac Cyr. Piscataquis of Guilford returns its starting lineup intact led by senior swingman Bryce Gilbert, a 25.5 points-per-game scorer a year ago, while Lee Academy has four of its top seven players back including 6-5 post player Alexey Platonov.

and 1,000-point scorer Nick Foley and senior forward Connor DiAngelo. Several D North tournament qualifiers from last winter are back with few graduation losses and a year of experience that should help them contend this year. Among those are Bangor Christian, which gave 2017 state champion Machias its closest call during last year’s tournament and also lost to Greenville by just

four points late in the regular season; Jonesport-Beals, which graduated only two seniors from an 11-7 team; and Deer Isle-Stonington, Greater Houlton Christian Academy and Ashland. Machias suffered heavy graduation losses but senior guard Jordan Grant should provide leadership, and Woodland and Schenck of East Millinocket aspire to contend after dropping down from Class C.

BANGOR, Maine — First-year head coach Joe Nelson knows his Bangor High School girls basketball team is going to be a work in progress with five juniors, a sophomore and six freshmen on his roster. “We’ve got a great group of girls with great attitudes. We don’t have a lot of experience but we have a lot of potential and we’re looking to get better every day,” said the 47-year-old Nelson. “I expect us to be solid defensively and make it tough for the other teams to score. We aren’t overly tall or fast but we have some athleticism.” Guard Olivia Sharrow and forward

Abby Houghton are the only returning Rams who received a lot of playing time last season although juniors Madi Drake and Sarah Hollis and sophomore Rowan Andrews got some minutes. Caroline Fernald is up from the junior varsity team and the promising freshman class includes Oxford Hills transfers Abby Fleming and Libby Fleming, Maggie Cowperthwaite, Ally Williams, Julia Houghton and Riley Andrews. Bangor has three sets of sisters: the Flemings, Andrews and Houghtons. “We’re all athletic,” said Sharrow. “We have been working on shutting teams down and scoring off our defense.” “We should be pretty good,” said Abby Houghton. “We’ve already seen some growth from some of our young players.” The Rams were 8-11 last season in Class AA North and the division appears to be wide open. Defending AA North champ Oxford Hills (19-2 last year) graduated seven seniors but has a top-notch, one-two punch in 5-10 forward Jadah Adams and 5-6 point guard Julia Colby, a Bangor Daily News All-Maine honorable mention as a freshman.

Messalonskee of Oakland (21-0), behind All-Maine first-team senior guard Sophie Holmes, was the state champ in A and is the team to beat in the North. Senior guard Alyssa Turner (5-11), an All-Maine HM, 6-1 sophomore G-F Gabrielle Wener and 5-7 G-F Makayla Wilson supply coach Keith Derosby with a talented trio and he has solid complementary players. Derosby said there are other legitimate contenders. “Hampden and Skowhegan return everybody and they were both real tough last year,” said Derosby. “Our division is very deep from top to bottom,” said first-year Hampden Academy coach Nick Winchester. Winchester likes his Broncos (12-8) team and their size, versatility and athleticism. “We can be big and slow it down or big and speed it up. And we have some real senior leadership,” said Winchester referring to Brooklyn Scott, Sophia Narofsky, Braylee Wildman and Marissa Gilpin, all fouryear contributors. Talented 6-2 junior center Bailey Donovan and sophomore F Alydia Brillant also are important pieces to the puzzle. Skowhegan (15-5) was a sophomoreheavy team and coach Mike LeBlanc’s Indians should be that much better this season The Indians are led by juniors Annie Cooke, Sydney Reed and Sydney Ames. Brewer looks to improve on a 5-13 campaign.

Winslow (17-3) has graduated AllMaine second-teamer Heather Kervin but Weslee Littlefield, Sarah Guimond, Madison Roy, Paige Trask and Haley Ward are back for the quick, pressoriented Raiders. MDI (12-8) is paced by juniors Julia Watras, Georgia Candage and Maddy Good and PI (14-6) features All-Maine third-teamer Emily Wheaton. Regional finalist Foxcroft Academy (16-5) of Dover-Foxcroft was hit hard by graduation.

Two-time Class B North champ Houlton is back in Class C which means there there is a sizeable list of teams -- Hermon, John Bapst of Bangor and Winslow among them -- that could claim the crown. The Hermon Hawks (14-5) lost three overtime games to Houlton including a 37-33 setback in the semifinals. All-Maine honorable mention Emi Higgins has graduated but there is a lot of experience returning in the likes of seniors Lauren Plissey, Maddie Pullen, Alex Allain and Gabryelle Chasse, junior Madisyn Curtis and sophomore Paige Plissey, Lauren’s sister. “I’m pretty excited. We can go a solid eight or nine deep,” said Hermon coach Chris Cameron, who believes the top of Class B is loaded. “Winslow will be one of the top teams in the league and Presque Isle, John Bapst and MDI (Mount Desert Island) will be good,” said the third-year coach. The Crusaders (12-8) are senior-laden with long-range sharpshooter Crystal Bell, an All-Maine honorable mention, headlining a seasoned group that includes fellow seniors Grace Philippon, Tia Zephir, Caleigh Lebel and Abbey Legasse along with junior Tianna Cyr.

Houlton is the heavy favorite C as it seeks a fourth straight regional championship. The Shires (19-2) have won one state title in B and one in C the last three years. All-Maine first teamer Kolleen Bouchard, a game-changing 6-foot guard, is back for her senior year and is a threetime All-Maine selection. Aspen Flewelling, a 5-10 senior, also can score from anywhere and coach Shawn Graham’s versatile daughter Kristen will be easing back into the lineup coming off knee surgery. Junior Tessa Solomon will have an elevated role as will sophomore Abbie Worthley. Coach Graham expects Central of Corinth, which also has moved to C after a 14-6 season in B, and perennial contender Calais (14-6) to be among the primary threats along with Stearns of Millinocket (18-2). Defending champ Dexter and regional runner-up George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill graduated dominant centers Megan Peach and Morgan Dauk, respectively. Central is sparked by two sisters, AllMaine HM Sydney Allen and sister Abigail Allen. The youthful Blue Devils feature the trio of junior Sydney Farrar and sophomores Olivia Huckins and Lauren Cook. Stearns, which graduated All-Maine HM Emma Alley, has a solid nucleus back including Peighton Ingersoll and Katherine Alley, Emma’s sister.

Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook appears to be primed to claim its first regional championship since 1997 although Warriors coach Cliff Urquhart said Woodland poses a genuine threat as does Schenck of East Millinocket, both of which have moved over from Class D. “This will be the first time in three years we have a roster of just high school kids,” said Urquhart, who has had eighthgraders on his roster. The Warriors, who don’t have a senior, have been the top seed in each of the last two seasons, reaching the semifinals two years ago and the finals winter. “Potentially, this is my best team, Hopefully, they’ve become smarter and more mature,” said Urquhart. The Warriors are led by leading scorer Sydney Brewer (18 ppg), top rebounder

while Schenck (10-9) will be sparked by Samantha Falone, Allison Noddin and Baileigh Osborne. Central Aroostook (136) could be in the mix and but defending regional champ Shead of Eastport (18-3) will have to replace All-Maine HM guard Holly Preston.
