President’s Message Contributing to the community is the hallmark of the Belfast Rotary Club and it is with pleasure that we host our 21st Annual Charity Fundraiser and Golf Tournament. The tournament will be on Saturday, June 8 at the Northport Golf Club and is the climax of our drive to raise funds for all the projects described in this Bangor Daily News insert.
Phil Carthage 2018-2019 President
The funds raised go to an amazing number of worthy causes and there are two that top the list: scholarships to local high school students and something special during the Holiday season: the 100 Fund. Our scholarships have supported 254 outstanding students with over $768,500 in awards. This year will be the 37th time that Belfast Rotary has given scholarships, now amounting to $70,000 per year. What is Rotary about? It is an organization that gathers people together to help those around them: in the local community, in the surrounding area, in our country and internationally – all over the globe! Here in Belfast we conduct our most popular event known as the 100 Fund. It started many years ago by giving Christmas presents of 100 needy children and has grown to 142 this year. Now we add to the presents warm clothing, boots, winter coats, gloves individual matched and sized for the recipients. What else is done locally? This organization raises funds for area food cupboards and soup kitchens, we host events like the annual Harbor Fest along our waterfront, and then make numerous contributions to local agencies and organizations through our Community Fund. Yes, we are international. It is hard not to hear about Rotary’s effort to eradicate polio, once the scourge of children everywhere and now only occurring in two countries. We are almost there and need to continue to ensure that it does not come back! There are also other projects in many countries to provide clean water, help with medical care, educate many and feed the hungry. If you are interested in learning more about our Rotary Club and the projects we support, please check out our Facebook page (Belfast Maine Rotary Club), go online to belfastrotary.org or email us at rotary6292pres@gmail.com. You might find something that interests you! It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as Belfast Rotary’s 94th President this year! Thank you to all of our Rotarians for their hard work, time, and dedication that makes this organization such an outstanding part of the community. And thank you to all of you out there that have helped us in a thousand ways to succeed – you make a wonderful partnership.
Meet our Incoming President for 2019-2020

Recycling Electronic Waste O
ur Rotary Club has held 12 electronic e-waste collection events. Sponsoring these events has been a way to raise funds for the club; it is also a community service to offer the recycling of these items rather than having them end up in landfills. We are partnering with Electronics End of Brewer to put on this event. They provide the staff to pack and transport these items to their recycling facility. Our Rotary Club members help with traffic control and unloading vehicles. Items accepted include televisions, computer components, printers, copiers, microwave ovens, telephones, and most electronic items including household use batteries.
This year we will also have an onsite paper shredding machine. This is a safe way to dispose of any “sensitive” documents that you many not want to put in public recycle containers. All shredding is done onsite while you watch. Last year we recycled 22,000 lbs. of e-Waste and 13,750 lbs. of paper shredding. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department will also be onsite to take back any unwanted medications.
Belfast Rotary Club does not charge fees for these services, but will gratefully accept donations. Over the years, we have raised over $12,000. This donation money goes back to the community through our projects. And, even better, at least one trailer truck load of e-waste has been collected at each of these events. This year’s event will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Belfast Public Works Department parking lot, 115 Congress St. This e-waste collection is not limited to just Belfast residents; all residents and businesses are welcome to bring items that day. Please call event coordinator, Doug Smith (338-3704) if you have any questions. Quantities are limited.

or several years, Belfast Rotary has been sponsoring two local walk/run races during the peak running season, with growth seen each year. The proceeds of these races support our Youth Exchange program and other Belfast Rotary charities. The success of these events is dependent upon not only Rotarian participation but also several non-Rotarian community members who enjoy the spirit of volunteerism. Approximately 25 volunteers are needed for each race to ensure the participants experience both a fun and safe event. We are also thankful to both the school district and City of Belfast officials, including the local police department. This year’s race season begins on July 20 with the Kilted Canter, in conjunction with the Celtic Festival. Participants are encouraged to don a kilt. On August 17, the Bug Run helps to kick off the Belfast Harbor Fest, with the first place male and female runners each receive 20 lbs of lobster. Each runner is then entitled to a free blueberry pancake breakfast at the Boat House. The Belfast Rotary 5K races are part of a nonprofit collaborative, called RunBelfast. This organization, established in 2018, consists of five nonprofits and six 5K road races, from May to October, in the city of Belfast. See RunBelfast.org for more information.

Fighting Food Insecurity T
he Belfast Rotary Club recognizes that there is food insecurity among many of the residents of Belfast and greater Waldo County. In an effort to help alleviate the need of others, the Club began donating in 1998, under the presidency of Patti Ann Lord, to five area food cupboards. The donations have continued annually since that time and the club now helps support seven food providers. The Belfast Rotary Club distributed monetary gifts totaling $10,500 this Spring. These organizations include the Little River Baptist Church Food Pantry, the Jackson Food Pantry, the Northport Food Pantry, the Searsport Methodist Food Cupboard, the Greater Bay Area Ministerium Food Cupboard, the Belfast Soup Kitchen, and the No Greater Love Food Pantry. Rotarians hold three pancake breakfasts each year, plus receive a portion of the annual Golf Fundraising Event proceeds to fund the food assistance organizations.

ince 1982, the Belfast Rotary 100 Fund has helped provide Christmas to thousands of the neediest children in Waldo County. Last year, teams of Rotary Santas and elves delivered gifts on the weekend before Christmas to 147 children in towns throughout the county.
Recipients received a new winter coat, boots, a hat, mittens, flannel pajamas, a warm outfit for school, a book and toys. Each of the more than 1,400 gifts needed for the project are selected and purchased by members of the 100 Fund Committee and wrapped by Rotarians and other volunteers at a Community Wrapping Party hosted by Waldo County General Hospital. The names of the children selected to receive gifts are provided by Waldo Community Action Partners with input from area teachers, Belfast Public Health and Waldo County Head Start. One of Belfast Rotary’s signature projects, the 100 Fund is fully funded by club member donations, contributions from community members and proceeds from the annual Rotary Charity Fundraiser and Golf Tournament. In 2018, the club spent more than $16,000 on new clothing and gifts. If you would like to help with the 2019 Belfast Rotary 100 Fund Project, please call Marjorie Crowley at 207-338-6005. Family Foundations
A founding principle of Rotary was to meet periodically to enjoy camaraderie and enlarge one’s circle of business and professional acquaintances. As the oldest service club in the world, Rotary club members represent a cross-section of the community’s owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy.
Rotary sponsors some of the world’s largest youth exchange, educational exchange, and scholarship programs. Rotary clubs provide innovative training opportunities and mentoring for young leaders and involve family members in a wide range of social and service activities.
Service Opportunities
Social activities give Rotarians a chance to let loose and have fun. Every Rotary club and district hosts parties and activities that offer diversions from today’s demanding professional and personal schedules. Conferences, conventions, assemblies, and social events provide entertainment as well as Rotary information, education, and service.
Club members have many opportunities for humanitarian service, both locally and internationally. Service programs address such concerns as health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment. Rotarians experience the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community.
Friendship Rotary was founded on fellowship, an ideal that remains a major attraction of membership today. Club members enjoy the camaraderie with like-minded professionals, and club projects offer additional opportunities to develop enduring friendships. Rotary club members who travel have friendly contacts in almost every city in the world.

Leadership Development Rotary is an organization of successful professionals.
