Meet our Incoming President for 2021-2022

John Golden

Contributing to the community is the hallmark of the Belfast Rotary Club and it is with pleasure that we host our 23rd Annual Charity Fundraiser and Golf Tournament. The tournament will be on Saturday, June 5 at the Northport Golf Club and is normally the climax of our drive to raise funds for all the projects described in this Bangor Daily News insert. This year is an unusual year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many businesses are struggling. With this in mind, we are foregoing our usual fundraising drive and are instead using this insert to thank our past supporters. What is Rotary about? It is an organization that gathers people together to help those around them: in the local community, in the surrounding area, in our country and internationally – all over the globe! The funds raised go to an amazing number of worthy causes and there are two that top the list: scholarships to local high school students and something special during the Holiday season: the 100 Fund. Here in Belfast we conduct our most popular event known as the 100 Fund. It started many years ago by giving Christmas presents and warm clothes to 100 needy children and has grown to 170 this year. Because of the pandemic, this year, rather than delivering gifts, we sent out gift cards to recipients for warm clothing and Santa gifts and vouchers for a new pair of winter boots. Our scholarships have supported 268 outstanding students with over $850,500 in awards. This year will be the 40th time that Belfast Rotary has given scholarships, now amounting to over $80,000 per year. What else is done locally? This organization raises funds for area food cupboards and soup kitchens (this year we gave over $24,500 to Waldo County food cupboards and soup kitchens), we host community events like the annual Harbor Fest along our waterfront, and then make numerous contributions to local agencies and organizations through our Community Fund. Yes, we are international. It is hard not to hear about Rotary’s effort to eradicate polio, once the scourge of children everywhere and now only occurring in two countries. We are almost there and need to continue to ensure that it does not come back! There are also other projects in many countries to provide clean water, help with medical care, educate many and feed the hungry. If you are interested in learning more about our Rotary Club and the projects we support, please check out our Facebook page (Belfast Maine Rotary Club), go online to belfastrotary.org or email us at rotary6292pres@gmail.com. You might find something that interests you! It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as Belfast Rotary’s 96th President this year! Thank you to all of our Rotarians for their hard work, time, and dedication that makes this organization such an outstanding part of the community. And thank you to all of you out there that have helped us in a thousand ways to succeed – you make a wonderful partnership.

Yours in Friendship and Service,

Richard Koralek Richard Koralek

ourteen local high school students were honored with Rotary Scholarships in 2020. In the 39 years of the Belfast Rotary Scholarship program the club has awarded $850,500 in scholarships to 268 students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, scholarship and service to the community. Students are nominated by their high schools, then submit a written application and are interviewed by a committee of Rotarians. The winning students were from Belfast Area High School, Searsport District High School, Mount View High School and the Waldo County Technical Center. A new scholarship was introduced in 2020, that being the Robert M. Hooper Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a Belfast Area high school student athlete who has overcome adversity and exhibited great character.

Rotary Volunteers Helping to Keep

BELFAST BEAUTIFUL THE KEEP BELFAST MAINE BEAUTIFUL project is an important piece of the Belfast Rotary Club’s community involvement. The project was organized by community volunteers in cooperation with the City of Belfast several years ago. The Rotary Club has provided a team to assist in the cleanup of 59 miles of roadway in Belfast and has made a significant change in the appearance of the City every spring. For the last four years, Rotary has provided a team to help with this cleanup effort. Children and friends of Rotarians have also volunteered to help with the project. In 2021, we had so many volunteers that we were able to assist other teams in cleaning up their assigned area in addition to our own. This is just one area that the Belfast Rotary has been able to assist in making Belfast the great community that it is in which to live and work.

Electronic Waste Collection O

ur Rotary Club has held electronic e-waste collection events each year since 2009. Sponsoring these events has been a way to raise funds for the Club. It is also a community service to offer the recycling of these items rather than having them end up in a landfill. Last year we partnered with Electronics End of Brewer. They provided staff to pack and transport these items to their recycling facility. The Rotary Club members helped with traffic control and unloading vehicles.

Items accepted included televisions, computer components, printers, copiers, microwave ovens, telephones, and most electronic items. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department was also onsite to take back any unwanted medications. They also provided an onsite paper shredding machine. This is a safe way to dispose of any “sensitive” documents that a person may not want to put in public recycle containers. All shredding was done onsite while you watched.

Belfast Rotary Club does not charge fees for these services, but we gratefully accept donations. Over the years, we have raised over $15,000. The donation money goes back to the community through our many charity projects. At least one trailer truck load of e-waste has been collected at each of these events. This year’s event will be held, (hopefully) this fall in October at the Belfast Public Works Department’s NEW parking lot at 54 Crocker St. As of this writing, there are no e-Waste recycling Vendors in Maine that are willing to do onsite collection events in Maine this year. E-Waste can still be dropped off at the Belfast Transfer Station, however the disposal of some items will require a fee at the Transfer Station. The e-waste collection is not limited to just Belfast residents — all residents and businesses are welcome to bring items that day. Please call event coordinator, Doug Smith (338-3704) if you have any questions.

or several years, Belfast Rotary has been sponsoring two local run/walk races during the peak running season, with growth seen each year. The proceeds of these races support our Youth Exchange program and other Belfast Rotary charities. The success of these events is not only dependent upon the Rotarian participation but also several non-Rotarian community members who enjoy the spirit of volunteerism. Approximately 25 volunteers are needed for each race to ensure the participants experience both a fun and safe event. We are also thankful to both the school district and City of Belfast, including the local police department. Due to the pandemic, the races were held virtually in 2020. This year, road races are back!! On August 14, the Bug Run helps to kick off the Belfast Harbor Fest, with the first place male and female runners each receiving 20 lbs of lobster. To ensure a safe yet enjoyable event, we’re adopting the COVID19 Prevention Checklist Industry Guidance, as it relates to organized racing events. The Kilted Canter, normally held in July with Celtic Festival, will not occur this year. The Belfast 5K races are part of a nonprofit collaborative, called RunBelfast. This organization, established in 2018, consists of five nonprofits six 5K road races, normally held from May to October, in the city of Belfast. Visit RunBelfast.org for more information.

Fighting Food Insecurity T

he Belfast Rotary Club recognizes that many residents of Belfast and greater Waldo County suffer from food insecurity. In an effort to help alleviate the need of others the Club began donating in 1998, under the presidency of Patti Ann Lord, to five area food cupboards. The need and donations have grown annually. In 2019, the Belfast Rotary Club obtained a grant through Rotary International and added club funds to provide the newly constructed facility of the Belfast Soup Kitchen with a walk-in cooler. Since March of 2020, the club has donated $25,050 in two distributions to ten different providers. These organizations include the Little River Baptist Church Food Pantry, the Northport Food Pantry, the Searsport Congregational/Methodist Food Cupboard, the Greater Belfast Ministerial Food Cupboard, the Jackson Food Pantry, the No Greater Love Food Pantry, the Belfast Soup Kitchen, the Game Loft, the Waldo County Technical Center Food Cupboard plus a donation to the City of Belfast “Keep the Faith” Grocery Voucher fund. Rotarians traditionally hold three pancake breakfasts each year plus receive a portion of the Annual Golf Fundraiser proceeds. Money raised in 2021 was provided by donations from the Rotarians and their friends.

or nearly 40 years, the Belfast Rotary 100 Fund has helped provide Christmas to thousands of the neediest children in Waldo County. No matter the weather, teams of Rotary Santas and elves deliver the gifts on the weekend before Christmas to children throughout the county. Recipients receive a new winter coat, boots, a hat, mittens, flannel pajamas, a warm outfit for school, a book and special toys.

In 2020, the project provided gifts to a record 170 children. Each of the more than 1,500 gifts needed for the project are selected and purchased by members of the 100 Fund committee and wrapped by Rotarians and other volunteers at a Community Wrapping Party. The names of the children chosen to receive gifts are provided by Waldo Community Action Partners with input from area teachers, Belfast Public Health and Waldo County Head Start. One of Belfast Rotary’s signature projects, the 100 Fund, is fully funded by club member donations and contributions from community members. In 2020, the club spent nearly $17,000 on new clothing and gifts for the project. If you would like to help with the 2021 Belfast Rotary 100 Fund—or for more information—please call Marjorie Crowley at 207-338-6005. Volunteers are always welcome!

Family Foundations

A founding principle of Rotary was to meet periodically to enjoy camaraderie and enlarge one’s circle of business and professional acquaintances. As the oldest service club in the world, Rotary club members represent a cross-section of the community’s owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy.

Rotary sponsors some of the world’s largest youth exchange, educational exchange, and scholarship programs. Rotary clubs provide innovative training opportunities and mentoring for young leaders and involve family members in a wide range of social and service activities.

Service Opportunities

Social activities give Rotarians a chance to let loose and have fun. Every Rotary club and district hosts parties and activities that offer diversions from today’s demanding professional and personal schedules. Conferences, conventions, assemblies, and social events provide entertainment as well as Rotary information, education, and service.

Club members have many opportunities for humanitarian service, both locally and internationally. Service programs address such concerns as health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment. Rotarians experience the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community.

Friendship Rotary was founded on fellowship, an ideal that remains a major attraction of membership today. Club members enjoy the camaraderie with like-minded professionals, and club projects offer additional opportunities to develop enduring friendships. Rotary club members who travel have friendly contacts in almost every city in the world.

Entertainment

Leadership Development Rotary is an organization of successful professionals. Team building, fundraising, public speaking, planning, organization, and communication are just a sampling of the leadership skills that club members can exercise and enhance. Being a Rotary leader provides further experience in learning how to motivate, inspire, and guide others.
