President’s Message
Contributing to the community is the hallmark of the Belfast Rotary Club and it is with great pleasure that we host our 24th Annual Charity Fundraiser and Golf Tournament. The tournament will be on Saturday, June 3 at the Northport Golf Club and is the climax of our drive to raise funds for all the projects described in this insert.
What is Rotary? It is an organization that gathers people together to help those around them: in the local community, in the surrounding area, in our country and internationally — all over the globe!
The funds raised go to an amazing number of worthy causes and there are two that stand out: scholarships to local high school students and helping needy children during the Holiday season — the 100 Fund.
President, Belfast Rotary Club 2022-2023
Here in Belfast we conduct our most popular event known as the 100 Fund. It started many years ago with Santas and Elves delivering Christmas presents and warm clothes to 100 needy children. The project has grown to over 214 children this year. Because of the pandemic, rather than delivering gifts, we sent out $24,000 in gift cards and vouchers to recipients for warm clothing, gifts and a new pair of winter boots.
Our scholarships have supported nearly 300 students with over one million dollars in awards. This year will be the 42nd time that Belfast Rotary has given scholarships, now amounting to $80,000 per year. Graduating students from Belfast Area High School, Searsport High School, Mountain View High School and Waldo County Technical School benefit from this program.

Locally, Belfast Rotary raises funds for area food cupboards and soup kitchens (this year we gave $15,500 to local food pantries and kitchens). In addition, the club participates in the Keep Belfast Beautiful event, helping to clean the city’s roads. We also make numerous contributions to local agencies and organizations through our Community Care fund.
Belfast Rotary also sponsors community events. We run the Belfast Harbor Fest in August and sponsor the 5k Road race; the Bug Run during HarborFest.
Yes, we are international. Rotary International has been working to eradicate polio for many years. We are very close to eliminating this dreaded disease from the globe. The Belfast Club held a Pints for Polio fundraiser in conjunction with Marshall Wharf. Through the Pints for Polio event and club contributions we were able to contribute $1,500 to the Polio Fund. The club also supports Rotary International’s efforts to supply clean drinking water, medical care and to feed the hungry across the globe.

It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as Belfast Rotary’s 98th President as well as the club’s youngest female president. Thank you to all of our Rotarians for their hard work, time and dedication that makes this organization such an outstanding part of the community. And thank you to all of you out there that have helped us in a thousand ways to succeed — you make a wonderful partnership.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Did You Know?
Funds raised through the Belfast Rotary Club’s annual Charity Fundraiser and Golf Tournament support a variety of worthy causes, including 307 student scholarships totaling $1,090,500.
BELFAST ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE GOES FOR 2 ...
$2,000,000
The Belfast Rotary Club scholarship program was commenced in 1982 with a meager budget of $2,000. In 2022, the program hit a milestone: over its 41 years it had awarded $1,010,500 in scholarships to 294 deserving students. Currently, the scholarship program is awarding $80,000 in scholarships per year. While it took the Club 41 years to reach the one million dollar mark, we will hit the two million dollar mark in just 13 years. The scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding leadership and service to the community. Students are nominated by their high schools, then submit a written application and are interviewed by a committee of Rotarians. The winning students come from Belfast Area High School, Searsport District High School, Mount View High School and the Waldo County Technical Center.
THE NEWEST BELFAST ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP
Over the past four decades the Belfast Rotary Scholarship Committee has administered several scholarships donated in memory of individuals who have had a close connection to Rotary. Scholarships were donated in memory of the following: Frank and Allison Pitman; Steve and Meg Malmberg; F. Frederick Romanow; Jim and Marilyn Duane; John and Janice Hawthorne; Jesse and Hope Rhodes; Thomas S. Lawson and Robert M. Hooper.
In 2022, the Scholarship Committee recognized a living member of our community, who in fact founded the Belfast Rotary Club Scholarship Program. Our honoree was club member, Colonel Manley E. Rogers, who founded the scholarship program 41 years ago. In 1982, Manley conceived of a scholarship program to recognize those students who exhibited strong leadership and service to the community. In order for the awards not to reduce the student’s financial aid package at his or her institute of higher learning, Manley determined it was best for the student to receive their financial award upon graduation. In 1982, the scholarship was a meager $2,000. Since that time, almost 1.1 million dollars has been awarded to students in the three local school districts. This is truly a case where Manley planted an acorn over four decades ago and a rather large healthy oak tree has grown!

Keeping Belfast Maine Beautiful

Rotary Volunteers are Keeping BELFAST MAINE BEAUTIFUL
THE KEEPING BELFAST MAINE BEAUTIFUL project is an important piece of the Belfast Rotary Club’s commitment to community involvement. In 2017, the project was organized by community volunteers, in cooperation with the City of Belfast, for a spring time clean up of roads, beaches, the river, trails and our parks.
For the past six years, The Rotary Club has provided a team to assist other organizations, schools, and businesses in the cleanup of the 59 miles of roadway in the City.

The Rotary Club provided so many Rotarians, friends and children of Rotarians to assist in their efforts that they have been able to assume cleanup of increasingly long amounts of roadway. The Club was one of 53 teams who collected 3.4 tons of roadside waste in 2022. Additionally 30,000 cigarette butts, or 37.94 pounds, were collected and not going into the bay or the groundwater. Since the project’s inception, 23.6 tons of trash has been collected and properly disposed of!
This is just one area that the Belfast Rotary Club has been able to assist in making Belfast the great community that it is in which to live and work.

For several years, Belfast Rotary has been sponsoring the Bug Run 5K during the peak running season, with growth seen each year. The proceeds of this race supports various Belfast Rotary charities. The success of this event is not only dependent upon the Rotarian participation but also several non-Rotarians community members who enjoy the spirit of volunteerism. Approximately 26 volunteers are needed for the race to ensure the participants experience both a fun and safe event. We are also thankful to the City of Belfast and the local police department for their volunteer efforts.
Bug Run runners are entitled to a free pancake breakfast at the Boat House, and the winners receive 10 lbs of lobster!

On August 19, the Bug Run helps to kick off the Belfast Harborfest, with the first place male and female runners each receiving 10 lbs of lobster. Each runner is then entitled to a free pancake breakfast at the Boat House.

This 5K road race is part of a nonprofit collaborative, called RunBelfast. This organization, established in 2018, consists of five (5) nonprofits for the sponsoring of five (5) 5K road races from June to October in the city of Belfast. See RunBelfast.com for more information.

The success of this event is not only dependent on Rotarian participation, but also many non-Rotarian community members who enjoy the spirit of volunteerism.

Rotary Club

in the COMMUNITY Fighting Food Insecurity
The Belfast Rotary Club recognizes that many residents of Belfast and greater Waldo County suffer from food insecurity. Food insecurity is a crisis in Maine, impacting 11.4% of households in the state, or over 153,000 people a year. To help alleviate the need of others the Club began donating in 1998, under the presidency of the late Patti Ann Lord, to five area food cupboards located in Waldo County. The needs and subsequent donations have grown annually since then. In 2022-2023, the Club has donated $15,500 to ten different providers. These organizations include the Greater Belfast Ministerial Food Cupboard, the Jackson Food Pantry, No Greater Love Food Pantry, the Belfast Soup Kitchen, Northport Food Pantry, the Searsport Congregational/Methodist Food Cupboard, and Little River Baptist Church Food Pantry. Funds were also provided to Waldo Community Action Partners, The Game Loft, and Waldo County Technical Center. We recognize food insecurity can cause serious health issues when people have to choose between spending money on food and medicine or healthcare. Food insecurity can make it more difficult for a student to learn and grow. We appreciate the good work of the local food pantries and support their efforts.

The Rotary Club broke records
on spending for new clothing and gifts last year to ensure area children had a warm and joyous holiday.

Belfast Rotary Club

in the COMMUNITY Belfast Rotary 100 Fund

Since1984, the Belfast Rotary 100 Fund has helped provide Christmas to thousands of the neediest children in Waldo County. The club set a record in 2022 by serving 214 children—the highest number of children Rotary has ever served at Christmastime. One of the club’s signature projects, the 100 Fund provides each child with a generous gift certificate to Reny’s Department Store for new winter clothing and “Santa” toys, as well as a voucher from Colburn’s Shoe Store in Belfast entitling them to a new pair of boots. Without the 100 Fund, many disadvantaged children in the county would not have a Christmas.

The 100 Fund is fully funded by Belfast Rotary Club member donations and contributions from community members and local businesses. The outpouring of financial contributions for the 2022 Christmas project was truly historic, setting records for both the number of donations received and the amount of those donations. This increase in charitable giving allowed the 100 Fund to reach more children than ever before, and Belfast Rotary is grateful to each and every donor.
The names of the children chosen to receive gifts are provided by Waldo Community Action Partners with input from area teachers, social workers, town clerks, churches, Belfast Public Health and Waldo County Head Start.
If you would like to help with the 2023 Belfast Rotary Club 100 Fund Christmas Project—or for more information—please call Marjorie Crowley at 207-338-6005. Financial contributions and volunteers are always welcome!

BELFAST ROTARY PRESENTS $10,000 FROM 2022 “EVENING BY THE BAY GALA” TO WALDO COUNTY TECHNICAL CENTER
The 2022 “Evening by the Bay Gala” opened at Paul Naron’s new Belfast waterfront event center on 16 Front Street with live and silent auctions. The event, sponsored by United Farmers Market, Mathews Brothers, Nordic Aquafarms and anonymous donors, was catered by Bell the Cat and featured live music by Jonesville.
The event raised $10,000 which was presented to the Waldo County Technical Center. Bonnie Klein, WCTC’s Student Services Coordinator, accepted the gift from Sue Beemer, the Club’s “Evening by the Bay” event chair. The gift will be used by the Tech Center’s student fund to provide its students with specialized clothing and safety items they need as they pursue their training.
“We are pleased to support the student fund,” said Rotary Club president Kristine Wentworth. “The Tech Center is an important part of this community, providing technical training and a high school education to so many local students. Supporting them, and the entire Belfast area community, is what Rotary is all about.”
Accepting the gift, the Tech Center’s Klein thanked Rotary and described the many skills that the Tech Center provides, including automotive repair, welding and culinary arts.
“We are proud to help so many wonderful students prepare for work here,” she said. “This donation will help in so many ways.”

Professional Networking
A founding principle of Rotary was to meet periodically to enjoy camaraderie and enlarge one’s circle of business and professional acquaintances. As the oldest service club in the world, Rotary club members represent a cross-section of the community’s owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy.
Service Opportunities
Club members have many opportunities for humanitarian service, both locally and internationally. Service programs address such concerns as health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment. Rotarians experience the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community.
Friendship
Rotary was founded on fellowship, an ideal that remains a major attraction of membership today. Club members enjoy the camaraderie with like-minded professionals, and club projects offer additional opportunities to develop enduring friendships. Rotary club members who travel have friendly contacts in almost every city in the world.
Family Foundations
Rotary sponsors some of the world’s largest youth exchange, educational exchange, and scholarship programs. Rotary clubs provide innovative training opportunities and mentoring for young leaders and involve family members in a wide range of social and service activities.
Entertainment
Social activities give Rotarians a chance to let loose and have fun. Every Rotary club and district hosts parties and activities that offer diversions from today’s demanding professional and personal schedules. Conferences, conventions, assemblies, and social events provide entertainment as well as Rotary information, education, and service.
Leadership Development
Rotary is an organization of successful professionals. Team building, fundraising, public speaking, planning, organization, and communication are just a sampling of the leadership skills that club members can exercise and enhance. Being a Rotary leader provides further experience in learning how to motivate, inspire, and guide others.
