FA R M E R ' S M A R K E T T R I P COMMUNITY-BASED FARMERS markets can introduce shoppers to an array of foods
they may otherwise never experience. Farmers markets are great places to find fresh, locally grown foods, and many market customers are happy to know they’re benefitting both the environment and local businesses with every dime they spend. Farmers markets can range from the very large to the relatively small, and firsttime visitors may not know where to begin. The following are a handful of ways to maximize your visit to farmers markets of all sizes. TAKE TIME TO EXPLORE. Farmers markets tend to have many of the same fruits and vegetables you can find at the local chain grocery store, but farmers markets also are known for offering more than what you may find in the produce aisle. Take time to explore the market and you may just find foods you typically only find at your favorite restaurant. Exploring also may introduce you to new foods you may otherwise never have tried. CONSIDER THE TIMING OF YOUR VISIT. The popularity of farmers markets has increased dramatically as more and more people embrace the concept of buying locally grown foods. While that’s great news for the planet and local farmers, shoppers should keep that in mind when planning their visits. If you love trying new foods, arrive early to the farmers market before the more unique offerings have been snapped up. Foods that have small yet devoted followings may not be available in abundance, and you may end up leaving empty-handed if you arrive late. If its a bargain you want, then visit later in the day when farmers with substantial remaining inventory may be more inclined to lower their prices. KNOW YOUR SEASONS. Some fruits and vegetables are better at certain times of the year than others. Freshness draws many people to farmers markets, and foods that are in-season are more likely to have that unforgettable freshness than those that are out of season or nearing the end of their season. Knowing the seasons is important for budget-conscious shoppers as well. If you’re shopping on a budget, purchasing foods while they’re in-season may save you some money, and you can always stock up on your other favorites later on when it’s their turn to be in-season. SPEAK WITH THE SELLERS. First-time farmers market shoppers may feel like they’re lost in the woods while everyone else seems to know exactly what they want and where to get it. If you find the farmers market somewhat intimidating, speak with the sellers. Shopping at the local farmers market tends to be more intimate than shopping at the chain grocery store, and many sellers would be happy to offer you some tips and make some suggestions based on the meals you like.

GO
CAMPING! THIS SUMMER, EXPERIENCE ALL THAT MAINE HAS TO OFFER! Courtesy Maine Campground Owners Association HIKING AND WALKING Maine offers some of the best hiking and walking terrain in the country. Whether it’s along a coastal path or through the woods echoing with the twitter of birds, there is no good reason not to get out. An excellent way to discover some of the best walking spots is through the Maine State Park Passport program. Interested in exploring the excitement of geocaching, learning about orienteering, and more? Each of these can add layers of fun to the joy that comes with a walk or hike. CULTURAL & HISTORICAL ACTIVITIES Learn a little bit about Maine’s rich coastal and maritime history or sip a bit of fun along the Maine Beer Trail. Both can show you a very active and real part of Maine. Maine is also home to a wide collection of cultural institutions and museums along the Maine Art Museum Trail. You can experience Maine’s finest works with visits to The Farnsworth in Rockland, the Portland Museum of Art, or The Ogunquit Museum of American Art. Our colleges and universities have also amassed collections that rival many major American museum holdings. SEASONAL FUN For some people who return to Maine year after year, the miles of beaches offer an unforgettable experience. From footprints in the sand and acrobatic seagulls to the pleasure of finding a perfect (and perfectly free) keepsake sand dollar at Popham Beach State Park, Maine beaches deliver bliss by the sandy bucket full. Another way to savor our magnificent vistas is at the end of a driver on any of the 100 or more golf courses, many found along The Maine Golf Trail. Or pedal along back roads and thoroughfares on the saddle of your bike. WILDLIFE WATCHING Maine sits in one of the most advantageous places on the east coast for spotting wildlife, especially birders. Our northern forests welcome a great many kinds of rare arboreal species, and the Atlantic Flyway for migrating waterfowl intersects in a wide swath across the state. Then there are the bears, beaver, fox, and the beloved Maine moose. A wildlife safari led by a Registered Professional Maine Guide can offer lasting memories (and great photos too). Those traveling to the coast are welcome to go whale watching or take a cruise to one of the few remaining coastal puffin colonies.
26 • EXPERIENCE MAINE SUMMER 2018
NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS In 2014 Acadia National Park, the jewel of Mount Desert Island, was voted our nation’s most popular National Park, and what a treasure! At over100 years old (the park was founded in July 1916) it continues to dazzle visitors with unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation: hiking, climbing, biking, beach combing, equestrian sports, photography, wildlife spotting, paddling, carriage rides, and of course camping. Not far away amid our immense and legendary forests sits Baxter State Park – home to hundreds of miles of trails, unmatched paddling and the extraordinarily historic and popular Mount Katahdin. From coast to mountain and from border to border Maine’s Department of Parks and Lands has collected opportunities for the adventure hungry visitor. SIGHTSEEING No less impressive are all the other ways to experience the views and vistas across Maine. Whether you like to experience the beauty and majesty of Maine from your vehicle or on foot, your options are limitless. For the touring set, take a ride along our four National Scenic Byways or explore our extensive State Scenic Byway system. Take a trip to spot our many covered bridges and waterfalls. Visit some of Maine’s historic lighthouses that line our shores and enjoy the view from where the raging sea meets the permanence of Maine’s granite coast. If you really want to, you can still sit in your chair enjoying the warm rays of the afternoon sun on your shoulders with an ice-cold glass of lemonade at hand. Whatever it is you want to do in Maine, there is a way and a place to enjoy our unlimited opportunities for recreation. (Seasonal note: While camping runs from the warmer months between Memorial Day and Columbus Day (with some exceptions), you should come back to enjoy a Maine winter some time.) B EL FAST HARBOR FEST
WORLD CHAMP BOATBUILDING TITLE UP FOR GRABS AT 2018 BELFAST HARBOR FEST! Courtesy Belfast Harbor Fest THE NATIONAL BOATBUILDING CHALLENGE is the centerpiece of the 2018 Belfast Harbor
Fest. This year, the 11th, has a special added feature—the World Championship will be contested as part of the overall competition. Builders Cody Keithan and Bruno Borzino won the 2017 Championship in Georgetown, South Carolina, last October, bringing this year’s championship contest home to Belfast. Harbor Fest starts the evening of Friday, August 17 with a Rotary Charity Gala to benefit the Waldo County YMCA’s summer camp program. This event features both live and silent auctions of artwork and crafts from Belfast’s best artists and artisans. Food tastings are featured from favorite local restaurants and our bar is catered by Rollie’s. Of special note in this year’s auction will be the original art for this year’s Harbor Fest poster from local artist Dianne Horton, our Belfast Harbor Fest featured artist for 2018. Saturday opens with a Blueberry Pancake Breakfast at 7:30, followed by a 5K “Bug” Run at 8:30, exhibits and vendors at 9, and the Boatbuilding Challenge at 11. Builders (two-person teams) have four hours to build a 12-foot passy skiff, which is then judged for quality. At 4 p.m., a relay race completes the contest. Prizes are awarded at Saturday’s BBQ Awards Banquet which follows the boat races. For kids, there is a bounce house, marine touch tank, knot tying, face painting, a rain gutter regatta and a Touch-a-Truck event featuring all types of fun vehicles to explore. Enjoy music from 10 to 4. Also featured is our Classic Boat Show, both on land and on the water. Some boats will even be offering free sails on the Bay. Throughout the weekend local craftsmen and other vendors display their wares and several food merchants help keep our visitors well fed. At noon Saturday, Belfast’s Come Boating! will stage their 18th Annual Regatta, a fourmile rowing race into the bay and back along the coastline to the finish at Steamboat Landing. The club also offers free community rows Saturday and Sunday afternoons in their Cornish Gigs. At 4 p.m. Saturday, Belfast Parks and Rec is sponsoring a puppet show featuring the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers. This is fun for the whole family and has been a standingroom-only show for the last two years. Sunday starts with the famous Cardboard Boat Races. Come early to choose your favorite entry. Prizes are awarded in multiple classes and spectators enjoy guessing which boats will float and which will sink. At noon on Sunday, Waldo County’s Habitat for Humanity will hold its fundraising Lobster Gala featuring your choice of lobster, steak, hamburgers or hot dogs. Music is provided by the award-winning Juke Rockets. Belfast Rotary is presenting the Belfast Harbor Fest for the 9th time, thanks to our great sponsors and the thousands of visitors who attend each year. All proceeds from our Rotary events are used to benefit local charities, families and student scholarships, contributing nearly $100,000 annually. Belfast Harbor Fest is Rotary’s commitment to celebrate and honor Belfast’s maritime tradition and at the same time raise money to assist our charitable giving. SUMMER IN THE COUNTY Courtesy Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR something new to
do this summer? Take a drive to Aroostook County, where life is the way it should be. Bring your bicycles, swimsuits, sunscreen, kayaks, binoculars, games, books—or nothing! You won’t have to battle the crowds or sit in traffic. The most amazing night skies await you and your companions. Plan to spend some time in late evenings watching the stars, satellites, and aircraft filling the vast sky. Boating, swimming, hiking, and exploring may fill your day while campfires, stargazing, music, and games may occupy your leisurely evenings. If you want to enjoy socializing and great food, there are multiple options. Enjoy the taste of locally brewed beer, locally roasted coffee, and fresh produce from our various roadside stands, farmers’ market, or the SAD 1 School Farm where students plant, tend, harvest, and sell a variety of produce through the season. You may want to find a location to pick strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries depending on the season. Don’t forget to stop and enjoy some Houlton Farms ice cream treats in Presque Isle or Caribou. Relax, enjoy a few days of leisure, attend some of the many festivals hosted throughout the summer and early fall. You may want to attend the Northern Maine Fair, one of the last agricultural fairs in the State, enjoy lots of activities included in your admission, performances, music, exhibitions and more. “L’il Farmers at the Fair” provides children an opportunity to have a hands-on experience picking produce. The Crown of Maine Balloon Fest provides beautiful sights and a variety of entertainment for all ages. Hot air balloons take flight early morning and evenings for four days. The flights are surrounded by breakfasts, craft sales, music, and activities for children. In September, take time to visit Caribou for the Caribou Marathon, a Boston Marathon-qualifier run through the picturesque city known for its treelines, winding streets, and friendliness. If you don’t have time to get away until October, plan a couple days in Presque Isle to participate in one of two signature events, the Haunted Woods Walk or Aroostook County Brew & Wine Fest at Nordic Heritage Center. Nordic Heritage Center, a world class Nordic ski center, provides great trails throughout the year for hiking, mountain biking, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. Open to the public
from dawn to dusk, this is a great location to spend some time. History, science, and cultural museums are spread throughout the area. Presque Isle will be celebrating the new splash pad and playground just opening this summer. You will be surprised by the variety
of activities available and amazed by the friendliness that awaits you in “The County”—central Aroostook County. For details on what is going on when you are spending time in central Aroostook County, visit centralaroostookchamber.com or call us at 764-6561.
