BE SURE TO CHECK FOR UPDATES OFTEN WE’RE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THE RETURN OF MANY SUMMER ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS! PLEASE BE AWARE THAT INFORMATION FOR THESE EVENTS CONTINUES TO UPDATE AND CHANGE. It goes without saying (but we’re going to say it anyway), this year’s summer events are going to look different than those in years past. Organizers are doing their best to keep events safe for attendees — including requiring masks, social distancing, limiting crowd size and making adjustments to certain activities. We carefully researched dates and information, but as some events were still in the planning phase at the time of production and state guidelines continue to change, some event information may no longer be accurate. Be sure to call ahead and check event websites and social media to stay up-to-date.
HERE ARE A FEW TIPS SO WE CAN ENJOY THESE EVENTS SAFELY AND FOR MANY YEARS TO COME: • WEAR A MASK • WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN • CALL AHEAD AND CHECK WEBSITES AND SOCIAL MEDIA FOR UPDATES, REVISED HOURS AND NEW RESTRICTIONS SO YOU’RE WELL INFORMED BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
We bring Maine
together
• BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE WHEN POSSIBLE — MOST EVENTS ARE LIMITING CAPACITY THIS YEAR • BRING A CREDIT CARD TO MAKE PURCHASES EASIER
• HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN & BE FLEXIBLE IF AN EVENT SELLS OUT, CAN’T OFFER CERTAIN ACTIVITIES YOU’VE COME TO EXPECT OR HAS TO CANCEL AT THE LAST MINUTE • SHOW YOUR SUPPORT. IF YOUR FAVORITE SUMMER EVENT IS BACK, HELP SPREAD THE WORD! SHARE DATES AND EVENT INFO, AND IF YOU CAN’T ATTEND OR THE EVENT IS TAKING A YEAR OFF, CONSIDER MAKING A DONATION SO ORGANIZERS CAN BRING IT BACK IN THE FUTURE.

MAINE, ACCOMMODATIONS BY WAY OF
DISCOVER THE PERFECT STAYCATION SPOT BY ERINNE MAGEE
CLOSER-TO-HOME TRAVEL is still on the agenda for many Mainers this summer. While some travelers are going beyond state borders, advance data is showing bookings for staycations still remain high. Exploring Maine is easy, but with so many overnight accommodation options, it can be hard to nail down the right place to rest your head at night. So, we’ve rounded up some of the best hotels and properties, depending on the type of experience you are seeking.
PICK A BEACH, ANY BEACH There isn’t a better coastal view than that from Cliff House Maine in Cape Neddick. The resort is situated atop Bald Hill Cliff, with sweeping views of the Atlantic against the stunning rock formations. Floor to ceiling windows in The Tiller restaurant offer a majestic brunch backdrop. The hotel is in close proximity to beaches in York, Wells and Ogunquit. After returning from a day in the sun, cool down at the spa with a gemstone facial. CONVENIENT BUT QUIET Mount Desert Island and is one of those places that Mainers look forward to visiting no matter how many times they’ve zipped around the Park Loop Road. In Southwest Harbor, The Claremont offers easy access to all the island’s attractions, but with the acreage that makes you feel like you’re enjoying a private getaway on the ocean. Meander through the gardens, check out classes from the Artist in Residence or book a day at the spa.

CLOSER TO HOME If you can’t venture too far, the historic Blue Hill Inn is a charming escape with 11 guest rooms and two suites in a central location to shopping and restaurants in Ellsworth. Getting out on the different lakes and ponds in the area is easy, too, as The Activity Shop on Mines Road in Blue Hill rents kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and even bicycles with drop-off to the Blue Hill Inn available.
DINE AND STAY Located in Deer Isle, Aragosta is a coastal venue that delights all the senses. Executive Chef Devin Finigan utilizes local produce and works with area fisherman and farms to create an exquisite fine dining experience. With an array of cottages and suites on property, guests don’t have to go far to retire for the evening lulled further into relaxation by the sound of waves in the distance. ENDLESS OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES If hiking is on the agenda this summer, Maine Huts and Trails has your accommodations covered for an 80 mile stretch in the Kingfield area. Four ecolodges are situated along the trails and offer private or shared bunk rooms for hikers, bikers and skiers passing through. Reservations are required and meals are offered during peak season. In July, look out for a yoga retreat at nearby Mt. Bigelow hosted by Yoga Hike Maine. AWAY FROM IT ALL Chances are, staying in a treehouse or perhaps a hobbit home has crossed your mind when dreaming of summer travel. Purposely Lost in Springvale offers a variety of these unique accommodations on Littlefield Pond. The property may offer natural seclusion, but the amenities mimic a full-service resort. The treehouses are equipped with full kitchens, indoor fireplaces, patios or balconies (some even have a private hot tub). Prefer a winterwonderland escape? Purposely Lost is a year-round destination.

SUMMER FUN ADD SOME WHIMSY TO YOUR SUMMER FUN
AT HOME
BY SARAH COTTRELL
CAMP UNDER THE STARS On a warm and balmy summer night, there is nothing as magical as sleeping under the stars. Grab your family, a tent, some sleeping bags and get cozy in the backyard with fun campfire stories, and don’t forget the s’mores!
24 • EXPERIENCE MAINE • SUMMER 2021
IF YOUR SUMMER PLANS are shaping up to look a lot like last year’s — canceled vacations, too much time at home, feeling bored, then you'll love this list of ways to create some whimsy in your own backyard. Maine summers are magical for many reasons; even if you're limited in where you can go and what you can do, we’ve created a list of playful ideas to add some enchantment to your backyard this summer. CATCH (AND RELEASE) FIREFLIES There are 2,000 species of Lampyridae globally, but the one we love best is the sweet little flying Maine beetle called the firefly that appears at dusk every summer evening. Catch some in a Mason jar and watch them light up the glass. Just don't forget to let them go; fireflies are becoming endangered. WATER BALLOON PINATAS When it gets hot and sticky, and you’re looking for something to cool you down, try this fun idea — fill a bunch of balloons with water and hang them from tree limbs. Then, grab a stick and whack them in a fun game of water balloon pinatas. BUILD A PANDEMIC TIME CAPSULE The possibilities of adding humor to this project are endless. Fill a box with mementos from the past year of pandemic living and bury your time capsule in the backyard. Have some fun with it and draw up a treasure map, including riddles and clues for future relatives to solve as they look for your buried treasure.

SET UP A SHE SHED OR MAN CAVE This trend has been around for a while, and we can see why. Who doesn't want an adults-only clubhouse to escape to in the backyard? Keep your shed (or cave) on a small budget or go big and buy a fancy gardening shed. Fill it with cozy seating, fun decorations like plants and string lights, and, of course, plenty of glasses and adult beverages. CREATE A KID NOOK Kids will love having their own little nook in the backyard where they can read and relax. Create an open-air tent and fill it with pillows and books. String up some lights and invite your kids to lounge and sip lemonade on the lazy dog days of summer. HOST A GARDEN PARTY Invite a few vaccinated friends over for a lovely afternoon garden party! Create a luncheon menu of finger sandwiches, fresh fruit and sparkling drinks. Dress up for the occasion and have some fun photo props on hand for all the selfies and videos you’ll want to take.
BANGORDAILYNEWS.COM/SPECIAL-SECTIONS • 25
BUILD A BOUJEE HAMMOCK You’ve heard of glamping, right? We’re applying the same upgrade strategy to your basic hammock with mosquito netting, string lights, brightly colored fabric throws and even fancy pillows. Why not create a luxe spot to swing into a summer nap with style? CORN HOLE Corn Hole is taking over the universe because it’s good old-fashioned addictive fun. Create a family Corn Hole night and, if it’s safe, invite your neighbors over for some s’mores and bean bag toss. Invent a grand prize for the winner that can be repurposed every game like a goofy hat or a handmade trophy.
BACKYARD MOVIE THEATRE Movie projectors used to be expensive and bulky, but now you can buy a high-quality projector that attaches to your smartphone for under $100. Project a movie off the side of your house, or set up a screen using bedsheets and have your friends and family set up cozy spots on the grass to watch. Make popcorn and a batch of punch, and you’ve got one amazing summery night.

BACKYARD MINI GOLF Sure, you can buy a boring plastic mini golf set online. But why not build your own epic backyard mini golf course using what you have on hand? Get creative and invent a maze of obstacles to putt around that will leave your family laughing and creating memories the whole summer.
CHECK OUT AMSMETEORS. ORG/METEORSHOWERS/ METEORSHOWERCALENDAR FOR MORE!
WATCH A METEOR SHOWER Did you know that Maine gets a front-row seat for some of the best meteor showers in the universe? It’s true! Mark your calendars for some upcoming celestial events and watch as the stars shoot across the pine tree sky. The most famous and easiest to observe are the Perseids, which will arrive July 17 and stick around until August 26. YARD SALAD If you’re looking for a new way to appreciate your backyard, try eating it. Yes! You can create your own yard salad by eating certain flowers and weeds. Make sure to use a reputable source to identify edible weeds, and if you plan to try eating weeds from your backyard, avoid using any chemical treatments on grass and shrubs. Check out bhg.com/gardening/vegetable/edible-garden-weeds for suggestions. MIDNIGHT MARGARITAS Nobody expected a pandemic to last as long as this one seems to be. So, why not create a new tradition to help spice up your summer? Throw a midnight margarita party with a friend or two — just don’t wake your neighbors! Whip up a batch of your favorite summer drink, lit a fire, and share some stories under the stars. No matter what you do this summer, stay safe by wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently, using hand sanitizer and social distancing. With any luck and lots of effort to adhere to CDC guidelines, we’ll hopefully be back to regular summer plans next year.
