AGRICULTURAL TRADES SHOW A Message from Commissioner Walter E. Whitcomb A Message from Governor Paul R. LePage Maine agriculture is a major part of our economy, heritage and identity as a state. At a time when the number of farms are declining nationally, Maine farms are increasing. Our 8,200 farm operations provide wholesome foods, thousands of jobs and over $740 million in farm receipts, not including direct sales at farms or farmers markets. Our entire economy and agricultural enterprises large and small are benefiting from the recent growth of Maine agriculture. As one of my last acts as your Governor, I would like to express how proud I am of the hard work and dedication of those connected with Maine’s natural resource industries. The fruits of your labors on behalf of the Maine people are evident every day at dinner tables and throughout everyday life. Maine-made products and agriculture has been on the rise in recent years. My administration, through the efforts of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry and other state agencies, has worked hard to support the people and organizations seeking to help Maine’s reach its full potential to be the breadbasket on New England. Farmers, producers, processors and distributors can achieve their potential to feed our neighbors, the region and the world. The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry has greatly improved stategenerated marketing, communications and technical assistance to support agricultural enterprises large and small. The result is more communication with the public on the ongoing success of Maine agriculture and the efforts of Maine’s largest natural resources agency to help support the continued growth and profitability of small businesses. Growing Maine Agriculture is the theme of the 77th Maine Agricultural Trades Show. Recent examples of successful enterprises and initiatives that are yielding results will be on display this year, January 15-17, 2019, at the Augusta Civic Center. Please make plans to attend this year’s Agricultural Trades Show to learn more about Maine’s growing natural resource economy and the men and women who are leading the way. Sincerely,

The phrase, “Growing Maine Agriculture” applies far beyond the farm fields and traditional marketing. Last year Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry staff significantly expanded the agricultural product marketing and communication outreach. In 2019 it is poised to do much more. From the Big E! in West Springfield, Massachusetts where a record breaking 1 million plus visitors tasted and bought Maine blueberries, potatoes, salmon, lobster, whoopee pies, maple cotton candy, plus other Maine made agricultural related gifts, to targeted trade shows in Chicago, Miami, Anaheim, New York, Orlando, London and Ireland, potential customers got to know a few of our talented food producers. Buyers worldwide repeatedly remind us that Maine has a very positive image. Bureau of Agriculture staff intend to accompany Maine food producers and food processors as our marketing outreach capitalizes on that attention and good will. To quote the vendor of a unique Maine product after they returned from their first ‘America’s Food and Beverage Show’, “It was a great experience which is helping us prepare for the season this spring. We already have a few orders from it. I expect more.” Last September, while U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue was visiting York’s Sandy River Farm in Farmington and Jordan’s Farm Stand in Cape Elizabeth, we reminded him that federal resources that support marketing of products generated on relatively small Maine farms are, at least, equally important to University food production research, soil and water conservation and the other programs designed to sustain our farming community. “Growing Maine Agriculture” has to be accompanied by growing Maine’s agricultural marketing efforts. To paraphrase the words of another participant in last year’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry food product marketing show, “We all have a vested interest in selling Maine. A highlight of the show is meeting that new customer. We look forward to that next marketing opportunity.” With that kind of positive attitude and some impressive sales success results, we better visualize how the expanded marketing program is an important component in sustaining the growth of Maine agriculture.
