Moving agriculture literacy forward Maine Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) is working with teachers, associations and farmers across the state to move agriculture literacy forward. It is very inspiring to see hundreds of volunteers take time to share what they do to produce food and fiber with school-age children. One of the spring highlights was the Northeast Livestock Expo at Windsor Fair Grounds on May 16. It was wonderful to see more than 1,300 children pull up to the fairgrounds on 27 busses from surrounding schools. They spent the day touring 28 stations filled with cattle, pigs, chickens, rabbits, horses, llama, bees, aquatic animals and much more. A 2013 MAIT C grant provided funding for all of the busses. A special THANK YOU goes out to the folks with agriculture license plates for providing those funds! In March, volunteers turned out to read to elementary school students in grades Pre-K to four the new “Wild Blueberries for ME” book sponsored and created by MAITC in conjunction with the Maine Wild Blueberry Commission. Six hundred classes across the state were visited. The books

and activity books were gifts for the classrooms to keep and use into the future. We noticed how many “Dairy Farming and Agriculture for ME” books still were being used from past years. In 2015, the book will be “Aquaculture for ME.” Maine School Garden Days at Medomak Valley High School on May 9 and 10 was a great success with intensive sessions on how to start a school garden that would thrive, and heritage seed saving with so much potential for science programs across the state at all levels! Neil Lash has the oldest program of this type in a school in the nation and his students have saved seeds from hundreds of heirloom varieties. Other topics included Cooking with Kids, Growing Mushrooms, IPM, Garden Structures and several others. MAITC is proud to add a new Professional Development page on the TeachMEFoodandFarms.org lesson website launched in 2013. Maine teachers will be able to earn recertification credits while teaching their own students about agriculture. The lesson site holds more than 100 lessons and resources for teachers to use, as well as links to

other sites. In 2013, there were more than 200,000 visits to the site recorded. This program will be launched officially Aug. 4-8 at the MAITC Summer Teachers Institute at Unity College. This training will offer 36 contact hours and include both classroom hours and field trips to farms, schools and agricultural businesses. Teachers participating in the new dual credit program at KVCC will also participate and model the new system with the instructor, Rick Kersbergen from Waldo County Cooperative Extension. This program will allow high school juniors and seniors to earn college credit as well as high school credit through studying Agriculture! As you can see it is a busy and exciting time for agriculture literacy in Maine. A special THANK YOU to all of you that have made this possible by volunteering and generating the funds with your Agriculture License plate. Let’s keep the momentum going!

The Maine agricultural license plate has increased funding for agricultural literacy by more than 300 percent since 2008 when the plate started, thanks to the dedication of Maine people to local food and farms! It is unbelievable that this plate has been able to supply up to $60,000 annually in grants to schools, FFA, 4-H Clubs, home school groups and other organizations. Three books and activity guides on Maine Agriculture have been created and read to more than 40,000 students by volunteers. Each year, teacher trainings and farm visits are held, and programs for pre-service teachers (education students in their

third year of college) are held in Maine universities across the state. During the past year, 15,596 Maine drivers supported Maine agriculture education by owning this plate and more than 81,000 school children received the benefits and they ALL say “THANK YOU!”

School Gardens Create The Maine School Garden Network (MSGN) is sponsoring a School Garden Open House on Saturday, Sept. 27, in conjunction with Maine Harvest Lunch Week (Sept. 22-26). School gardens across the state will be open to the public to celebrate students’ hard work and to raise awareness of how a garden can be a very effective part of the curriculum. Potential activities include student-led garden tours, gardening demonstrations, games, food tastings, garden-themed artwork, music, vegetable markets and more. Check the MSGN’s website at msgn.org around mid-September to locate a school in your area that is participating in this event. Maine Harvest Lunch Week is observed every September by school districts around the state. School cafeterias celebrate the bounty of Maine’s agricultural harvest by featuring local foods on the school menu. Teachers incorporate nutrition and local farms into the week’s lessons, making this an educational and community-building annual event. Many schools now are purchasing food from Maine farms and producers year round, as well as growing some of their very own vegetables in a school garden! The Maine School Garden Network has a mission to promote educational gardens, and to encourage school programs that teach healthy eating and environmental stewardship. Our volunteer Board members come from diverse backgrounds in education, agriculture, community building, nutrition, and an array of other fields. All share the conviction that school gardens are a unique and very effective way to improve education. Gardens can be used as an outdoor laboratory, providing hands-on experience for every subject in the curriculum. Garden projects teach cooperation, responsibility and patience, and promote self esteem and school pride. Gardens provide a wonderful way to integrate the local community into school activities, and are a natural lead-in to service projects. Its been proven that students who participate in garden projects at their school have better academic success, and make healthier choices about what to eat. The Maine School Garden Network, in addition to serving as a resource for teachers and other youth garden coordinators, sponsors local and regional events designed to highlight the importance of gardening with children and young adults. Every spring we partner with Maine Agriculture in the Classroom and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension to present Maine School Garden Day, an educational conference for teachers. We also participate in the education tent at MOFGA’s Common Ground Country Fair in September.

For information about the open house, for resources on gardening with kids, or to learn more about the Maine School Garden Network go to the MSGN website, msgn. org, or email MSGN at info@msgn.org.

Farm woodlots provide income, firewood and lumber, but convey many public benefits when managed properly.

Family woodlands an important part of Maine’s forests From sustainable timber production to clean water, Maine forests provide a wealth of goods and services for our great state. In Maine, individuals and families own 25 percent of all private woodlands, totaling about 4.5 million acres. Exact numbers are difficult to quantify, but we do know that many of these woodlands are associated with farms. Farm woodlots provide income, firewood and lumber, but convey many public benefits when managed properly. Maine family woodlands protect water resources, provide wildlife habitat, contribute to the state’s economy, provide public access and recreation opportunities, and are the core of social systems of Maine. To assist small woodland owners, Department of

Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry conducts extensive education and outreach programs. The Maine Forest Service develops, coordinates and delivers natural resource education, workshops and training opportunities for farm woodland landowners, school children, forest products harvesters and forest managers. Some recent examples of Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry outreach include a Forestry Night workshop at the Houlton Winter Agriculture School, which marked the 10th year that Maine Forest Service has worked with the Southern Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District to provide forestry training for the district’s lecture series. Presenters delivered a presentation on the spruce budworm and also provided an interactive demonstration on Best Management Practices to protect water

quality on logging jobs. A Landowner Outreach Forester gave a presentation to new farmers at the Maine Agricultural Trades Show. The presentation, “The Winter Crop: What Farmers Should Know About the Part of Their Land With Trees on It,” was one of a series of workshops and seminars hosted by the Beginning Farmers Resource Network (BFRN). BFRN is a collaborative effort of the DACF and partner organizations such as the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Maine Association of Conservation Districts. More than a dozen new and prospective farmers attended the presentation, and discovered possible crops that can be cultivated on their land. As part of the Maine Future Farmers of America (FFA) State Convention, held at the University of Maine, a team from the Maine Forest Service developed, hosted, and led the forestry competition. Students participated in the forestry event that included a comprehensive forestry test, compass practicum, as well as testing in forestry tools and map skills. Foresters conduct water resources workshops for farm woodland owners throughout Maine.
