HIKE QUODDY HEAD STATE PARK By Aislinn Sarnacki / BDN Staff
Easy to moderately difficult, depending on the trails you explore in the park, which is home to about 5 miles of trails. The trails closest to the parking areas are wide and surfaced with gravel, making them smooth and easy to walk. Farther from the parking areas, the trails become narrow, hilly and rough, with an abundance of exposed tree roots and rocks.
DIFFICULTY HOW TO GET THERE
The park is located at the end of South Lubec Road in Lubec. You’ll reach a fork in the road and a brown sign for Quoddy Head State Park. If you veer left, you’ll find a parking area atop a hill near the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. If you veer right, you’ll find another parking lot at a picnic area by the water. These parking areas are close together, so if you’re going for a hike, it really doesn’t matter which one you use. Handicapped parking is located beside the lighthouse and picnic area.

THE PAGES CONTINUE TO TURN IN THE BUCKSPORT HISTORY BOOK AS YEAR THREE post-paper mill unfolds in Bucksport, economic development efforts continue to surge as this community blossoms. Main Street Bucksport, a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization modeled after groups with established success records in Belfast, Rockland and Gardiner, Maine, is officially up and running, and supported by private, business and municipal donations. Under the expert leadership of Executive Director Brook Minner, this group’s focus is on downtown redevelopment, and has created and/or will manage several annual events proven to bring traffic and money into the town. MSB also works with local businesses and merchants in any way needed to help with promotion, development and more. Visit mainestreetbucksport.org. December 2016 saw a record number of community activities, culminating in a busy holiday season in local shops, and a parade boasting 15 floats gliding down Main Street on one of the coldest night of the year — with hundreds lining the street to cheer them on. Community spirit is running at an all time high, proudly enjoying the success of the high school Robotics Team as they compete in the world high school robotics championship in May, and celebrating the high school’s Unified Basketball Team for earning the Northern Maine Championship in their initial season. The Lighthouse Arts Center, a 9,000 square foot mecca on Main Street for artists, kids and adults alike, celebrated their grand opening in April. In reclaiming this critical downtown space, owner/ artist Kathryn James is making a major contribution to the town and its growing emphasis on art and cultural events. 18

It’s a weekend long, fun packed event created to embrace Bucksport’s history and showcase its future, offering fabulous Maine musicians, crafts, food and more. HIKE BURNT ISLAND By Aislinn Sarnacki / BDN Staff
DIFFICULTY HOW TO GET THERE
INFORMATION
Moderate. The island is home to about 5 miles of trails and gravel roads. Rocks and exposed roots make for tricky footing in some areas, and the trails travel over hilly and uneven terrain. Burnt Island is one of the Georges Islands, which lie about 4 miles south southwest of Port Clyde is Muscongus Bay. They include Allen, Benner, Davis, Burnt and Little Burnt islands. Its coordinates are 43867946, -69.290137. The dock, beach and island caretaker house is on the north side of the island. If you’re turned away from the ocean on the sandy beach (to the left of the dock), the Loop Trail is straight ahead, across the lawn.
Burnt Island is one of the many islands included in the Maine Island Trail, a 375mile recreational waterway that connects more than 200 islands and mainland sites open for day visits or overnight camping along the entire coast of Maine. Burnt Island itself is privately owned and open for day visits. Those wishing to stay overnight must acquire special permission through the Maine Island Trail Association.

HIKE QUAGGY JO MOUNTAIN By Aislinn Sarnacki / BDN Staff
DIFFICULTY HOW TO GET THERE
INFORMATION
in Presque Isle
Moderate-strenuous. The loop hike to the top of Quaggy Jo is approximately 3 miles. Steep sections of trail, loose rock and slippery dead leaves make the hike a challenge. Quaggy Jo Mountain lies in Aroostook State Park, which has an entrance at 87 State Park Road in Presque Isle. Start at the main trailhead off the parking area. The trailhead is marked with a kiosk and a sign that reads: “Snowshoe Trails.” Quaggy Jo Mountain can be hiked year round. Maps are available at the trailhead. Each intersection in the network is marked with a sign and usually a map.
The twin-peaked Quaggy Jo Mountain offers a challenging climb rewarded by stunning views of the potato fields, forests and lakes of northern Maine. The North Peak provides the best views, though there is a great outlook from the ridge (in between the two peaks) and another great outlook located at the end of a short side trail near the South Peak.

enough for young children. The park is located off Empire Road in Poland. From Interstate 95, take Exit 75 and drive south on Route 202 for 1 mile, passing Crossroads Market and Southern Maine Auto Auction, and turn right onto Route 122 (Poland Spring Road). Drive 0.8 mile to a stop sign and turn left onto Route 122 (Hotel Road). Drive 3 miles and turn right onto Empire Road. Drive 0.7 mile and turn left onto State Park Road, which is marked with a large sign for Range Pond State Park. Drive about half a mile to the main parking area for the park, stopping at an entrance booth on the way to pay admission.
HOW TO GET THERE
Featuring wide sandy beaches on the scenic Lower Range Pond, Range Pond State Park has long been a popular place for the public to enjoy watersports, picnicking, sunbathing and fishing. And in recent years, the park has expanded its network of walking and biking trails and started opening its gates year round to offer a wider range out outdoor activities during all seasons.
