Regional champ will emerge from top four boys’ Class A squads By Ernie Clark BDN STAFF
Just four schools have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Eastern Maine Class A boys basketball tournament at the Augusta Civic Center in each of the last four years: Bangor, Edward Little of Auburn, Hampden Academy, and Mt. Blue of Farmington. Look familiar? They’re also the top four teams in this year’s Eastern A Heal point ratings, and this year’s regional champion is likely to emerge again from this high-quality quartet. The four frontrunners entered the final week of the regular season with a combined 56-8 record, with six of the losses to each other. Only Lawrence of Fairfield holds victories over any of the leaders, with early season wins over Mt. Blue and Hampden, so no wonder the Bulldogs also are secure in advancing to Augusta while hovering around .500 for much of the season. But back to the top of the standings. Bangor has not lost since an opening-game 65-52 defeat at Hampden, its fortunes paced by its frontcourt tandem of 6-foot-3 senior forward Zach Blodgett, 6-

foot-5 senior center Josiah Hartley, and 6-foot-6 junior forward Patrick Stewart, a trio that has enabled coach Roger Reed’s club to generate plenty of high-percentage shots and rebounds as well as relegate most opposing offenses to the outside, where guards Tristan Thomas and Luke Hetterman have applied the perimeter pressure. That defensive effort has yielded
just 37.3 points per game so far this winter, with no opponent scoring more than 47 points since the Rams’ loss to Hampden. As for the Broncos, two last-second losses prevented coach Russ Bartlett’s club from an even more impressive record than than the 15-3 effort it secured with a win over Messalonskee of Oakand in its season finale.
While Bangor is an inside-oriented team, Hampden is keyed by its guards, particularly senior Graham Safford. The 6-foot-1 senior recently surpassed 1,000 career points and ranks as his team’s leader in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals as he has flirted with several triple-doubles during the latter stages of the season. He teams with sharpshooting junior Christian McCue to give Hampden
arguably the best backcourt tandem in the region to go with a frontcourt led by 6-foot-7 Fred Knight, who was battling an injury late in the regular season. Edward Little features 6-foot-3 senior forward Bo Leary, one of the craftier players in the region who is able to take bigger defenders outside as well as work in the low post against rivals his height or smaller. Point guard Tim Mains is a steadying influence for coach Mike Adams’ two-time defending Eastern Maine champions, whose lone loss entering the final week of the regular season was a 73-65 defeat at Hampden in their only meeting of the winter on Jan. 4. Then there’s Adams’ alma mater, Mt. Blue, which has had another stellar season under longtime coach Jim Bessey and resided in fourth place in the Heal point ratings for more than a month. The Cougars are led by the insideoutside tandem of 6-foot-5 Cam Sennick and junior point guard Eric Berry. As for darkhorses in the division, Lawrence has proven itself capable of defeating the big boys, and Lewiston has parlayed a lateseason surge sparked by victories over fellow tourney contenders Brunswick and Mount Ararat of Topsham into a tournament spot of its own. Cony of Augusta, Brewer, and Messalonskee of Oakland began the final week of play needing a big win to punch a ticket to the ACC.

Hampden Broncos seeking deep run in girls’ Class A tournament By Ryan MCLaughlin BDN STAFF
There has been quite the changing of the guard in the Eastern Maine Class A girls basketball ranks this winter. Hampden Academy, which is enjoying one of its best seasons in recent memory, and will enter the eight-team tournament seeded no lower than third, with coach Chad Bradbury’s club having steamrollered to the KVAC North title. “We went through our shooting slumps; thank goodness it was midseason as opposed to tourney time,” Bradbury said. The Broncos have left perennial contenders such as Skowhegan and Messalonskee in the dust, while Edward Little of Auburn and Morse of Bath have controlled the south. Even though the Shipbuilders, Red Eddies, and Broncos are looming as the teams to beat, Bradbury believes it’s anybody’s tournament. “I wouldn’t say Morse is unbeatable by any means,” he said. “It’s going to be an interesting week.” Hampden has used offensive consistency and a stifling defense in its run back to Augusta, as the

Broncos have surrendered more than 40 points only five times all winter. Senior guards Michaela Stephenson and Katelyn DeRaps headline a balanced offensive attack, while Kate Parsons can play in either the backcourt or frontcourt. Julia Snyder gives Hampden another solid post presence, while Whitney Moore, Courtney Doyon, and Helene Sherburne provide depth. It’s quite possible the Broncos could face local rivals Bangor or Brewer in an opening-round matchup, as those two teams were battling for the final postseason positions in the season’s final week. The Rams climbed back into playoff contention thanks to pointworthy victories over Messalonskee and Skowhegan late in the regular season, and coach Katie Herbine’s club was in a solid position to grab a spot with two games to play. Bangor and Mount Ararat of Topsham were battling for two playoff spots in the regular season’s final week, including a seasonending Witches-Rams clash at the Bangor Auditorium. Bangor has been sparked by the return of junior forward Kate Treadwell from an injury, while the Rams also feature tenacious guard play, led by sisters Deane and Deidre Johnson and Kim Jordan, along with Hillary Throckmorton. Bri McKenna gives Bangor another solid inside presence. “They’re going to be tough having somebody inside that can be a nuisance on the boards,” said Bradbury.
Edward Little and Morse were jockeying for the No. 1 seed in the regular season’s final week. Coach Craig Jipson’s Red Eddies have also been somewhat of a surprise considering their graduation losses, but sophomore guard Ashlee Arnold has had an outstanding year for EL, whom Bradbury called
“scary.” Morse features Danish exchange student Nikoline Ostergaard, a 6-foot guard, while the Shipbuilders also have solid depth in Emma Block, Tarra Burr, and Tori Field. Bradbury feels as long as his Broncos can play strong defense,
they’ll have a good shot at the regional title. “Our goal is to keep people under 40 points,” he said.“I kind of feel the first to 40 wins in girls basketball.” Rounding out the tourney field are Brunswick, Cony of Augusta, and Messalonskee.
Camden Hills rolls to the top in boys’ Class B By Ernie Clark BDN STAFF
The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference has dominated Eastern Maine Class B boys basketball for the last decade, winning 10 consecutive regional titles and eight state championships. And Camden Hills of Rockport is dominating the KVAC ranks this season, earning favorite’s status to win its fifth gold ball since the start of the 2000-01 season. The Windjammers ended the final week of regularseason play not only undefeated and top-ranked in the division, but outscoring their opponents by 32 points per game. “Every day that we work in practice we get that much more confident,” said Camden Hills guard Joel Gabriele, “and I have complete confidence in my teammates. We’ve been playing together since we were little guys, and this is our senior year so we’re ready to go.” Camden Hills features 6-foot-6 seniors Tyler McFarland and Keegan Pieri. McFarland, a two-time Bangor Daily News All-Maine choice, is a favorite for this year’s Mr. Maine Basketball award, while Pieri has come on strong during the second half of the season. “When you have two 6-foot-6 guys it helps, but we’ve really talked a lot about dominating the paint, not letting the ball into the paint on the defensive end and on the offensive end forcing all their defenders into the paint before we shoot a 3(-pointer),” said Camden Hills coach Jeff Hart. “As long as we don’t get 3-happy early, they’ll open up after that if can go inside-out to get the shots.” That approach has enabled the Windjammers to average more than 78 points per game. Their offense

also is fueled by turnovers forced by the Windjammers’ trapping fullcourt defensive pressure. “Everything runs off our defense,” said Pieri. “Our offense runs off our defense, so basically if we put our energy into defense, everything will just flow from there.” Ellsworth, which also ended the final week of regular-season play undefeated, is trying to return to the Eastern B final for the second straight year. Presque Isle, Nokomis, & Bapst are tough contenders in girls’ B By Ryan MCLaughlin BDN STAFF
From top to bottom, most girls’ basketball pundits around the state would argue that Eastern Maine Class B is one of the deeper fields in tournament play. “I agree 100 percent,” assessed John Bapst coach Mike Webb. “I just don’t see any blowouts.” Heading into the final week of the regular season, it was finally clear who the top 10 teams would be, and Presque Isle has proven to be the best among the bunch during regular-season play. Coach Jeff Hudson’s Wildcats will enter the tourney as the No. 1 seed for the second consecutive year with a 17-1 record, finishing the regular season on an 11-game winning streak. It certainly had its dramatic moments, such as Kayla Richards’ half-court buzzer-beater in a 37-36 win over Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln on Feb. 1. Richards, a junior guard, is one of PI’s top offensive weapons, along with classmate Chelsea Nickerson and sophomore Chandler Guerrette. While the Wildcats do lack height, they are athletic, quick, and play tough pressure defense. John Bapst, the only team to beat Presque Isle this winter, has enjoyed a fine season under veteran coach Webb, and his Crusaders

finished in second place. Bapst has been led by freshman forward Abby Pyne. The 6-foot Pyne is not just strong around the basket, but can step out and hit mid- to long-range jump shots, and is one of the best free-throw shooters in the Big East at 82 percent. “We definitely want the ball in her hands,” Webb said. Pyne has faced double- and
do damage. Webb said Pyne has worked hard on her floor vision and setting up her teammates when defenses apply pressure. “She’s not selfish; she definitely sees the floor,” he said. “We’ve worked a lot on that this last week, because she’s going to see that type of pressure down the stretch,” Webb said. Defending regional champion Nokomis, which finished the season in fourth place, will not give up its crown without a Alexandra Holmes (5) and Maddie Smeaton fight. The team the Warriors knocked off in the regional finals last winter, MDI, still has two-time Big East Conference Player of the Year Megan Phelps leading the way, while Medomak Valley of Waldoboro also has a strong inside game led by Ericka Christensen. Caribou is certainly capable of pulling an upset, and the Vikings did just that in the season’s homestretch, beating John Bapst at home to secure the No. 6 seed and bypass the preliminary round. Caribou features one of the region’s top offensive players in senior Jenna Selander. The four teams that were in the preliminary round — Winslow, Old Town, Hermon, and Gardiner — are all capable of making such a run as well, particularly Old Town with its height. “I don’t think anybody wants to play Old Town. They’ve got the size and the guards,” Webb said. Coach Dana Maxim’s Coyotes feature two solid post threats in juniors Courtney Treadwell and Ashley Abbott, and Old Town has given several of the top teams fits this winter.

Penobscot Valley teams finish strong among top 8 boys’ C squads By Ernie Clark BDN STAFF
There’s been a resurgence in Class C boys basketball in northern Penobscot County this winter. Both Lee Academy and Penobscot Valley of Howland have established program records for most regular-season victories in a season, and Stearns of Millinocket gives the region three of the top five teams in the division according to the Heal point ratings. Lee’s success has stemmed in part from a defense that has yield-
ed just 47 points per game, but the Pandas also have averaged more than 66 points per game throughout the season and nearly 74 points per contest during their last eight games. Coach Randy Harris’ club has four players who average scoring in double figures, and eight different players have led the team in scoring at least once this winter. And in a recent game against Deer Isle-Stonington, the Pandas had 26 assists on 34 field goals made, with 13 of those field goals coming from beyond the 3-point arc.
“I’ve been coaching for 27 years,” said Harris, “and this is by far the best offensive team I’ve had here.” Senior guard Bryan James has emerged as the team’s leading scorer, averaging 20 points per game over the team’s final seven regular-season games. “He’s as good a finisher as I’ve had. He’s had a good season,” said Harris. Senior guard A.J. Harris, son of the coach, ranks second on the team in scoring, rebounds, and assists. “A.J. may not be the best player I’ve ever had, but he might be the best player on the best team I’ve ever had,” said coach Harris. But where Lee perhaps separated itself from its Eastern Maine Class C peers during the regular season was with its depth. Daniel He, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, has been a solid defensive player throughout the winter and has seen his offensive role grow steadily as Lee has focused on working its attack from the inside out. Artie
Makovskis, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, has provided steady point guard play while Dustin Sawtelle, Jasil Elder, David Cropley, John Chase, Kody Scott, and Blaine Guido all have made valuable contributions, according to Harris. While the Pandas head into postseason play with confidence, they are taking nothing for granted. “When you’ve got players in the tourney like Joey McCloskey (of Penobscot Valley of Howland) and Brandon McLaughlin (of Stearns of Millinocket), I certainly think it’s wide open,” said Harris. Penobscot Valley has been led by one of Eastern Maine’s top big men in McCloskey, a 6-foot-7 senior who is scoring and rebounding in double figures and recently surpassed 1,000 career points. Eddie Cobb, Jake Jones, Ryan Scopino, and David Hallett also have been key to the Howlers’ success. McLaughlin, a senior swingman who helped Stearns win the Eastern C football title last fall, has sparked the Minutemen to its

Central Red Devils bring 18-0 record to Bangor on Tuesday, Feb. 22 By Ryan MCLaughlin BDN STAFF
In a typical basketball season, it’s not unusual to find at least two or three undefeated teams vying for top spots as tournament time approaches. But that hasn’t been the case this winter, with the Central girls the lone squad in Eastern Maine with an unblemished mark heading
into the Class C tourney. Coach Diane Rollins’ club finished their unbeaten season with a victory over rival Foxcroft Academy in the season’s final week, and features a pair of 1,000-point scorers in seniors Hannah Pray and Bekah Campbell. Despite the Devils’ perfect regular season, Pray knows that everybody is 0-0 when the ball is tipped at the Bangor Auditorium. “It’s like starting the season all

over again going into the tournament,” Pray said. “We just need to pick it up all together.” Central has maintained its perch atop the standings despite missing sophomore point guard Max McHugh with a leg injury, and the Devils are hoping she’ll be ready to go in the quarterfinals. But Central has had some players step up big-time in her absence, particularly Brianna Speed, Taryn Pineo, Roberta Trafton, and Sam Brownell. The Devils weren’t particularly pleased with their effort against Foxcroft on Feb. 8, and feel that they’ll need to step their game up a bit once the tournament tips off. “I think we need to have a killer instinct, and we need to come out and play hard for 32 minutes,” Campbell said. That’ll be key against competition like defending state champion Calais, Houlton, Woodland, and Orono, the other teams in the top five. “I definitely think Calais, Woodland and Houlton, they’re going to be key, but you can’t look over any teams that are in the tournament,” said Pray. Certainly not Calais, which knocked Central out of the tournament en route to its state championship last winter. Coach Dana Redding’s club has quietly climbed up the standings to first place after some early-season struggles, and features a talented freshman in Paige Gillespie, while the Blue Devils still have some solid experience in Rebecca Redding, Shannon Brown and Brooke Young. Calais battled rival Woodland in
the season’s final week, with the two teams playing each other in Woodland in the final game of the season. Coach Arnold Clark’s teams are known to generate offense off fullcourt pressure defense, and that has been the case again this winter in the Dragons posting yet another 15-win campaign. Taylor Cochran, Molly White, and Kelsey Burtt are among Woodland’s top offensive catalysts, while Christine Boomer and Kelsey Worden supply depth. Houlton played arguably the toughest schedule of anybody in Class C, as the Shiretowners have faced the likes of Presque Isle and Caribou en route to a No. 3 seeding. Coach Shawn Graham’s club is led by Amanda Fogarty, Marina
Cameron, and Taylor Bailey. Orono is certainly capable of making a strong tournament run under coach Jessica Libby, as the Red Riots will be making their third straight Bangor Auditorium appearance. Morgan Dickey and Jillian Woodward give the Riots two strong threats underneath, while Orono also features solid guard play with Jade Keezer and Kate Berry. Laura Triandafillou is a threat to score from the perimeter, along with Keezer. Washington Academy of East Machias, which has played in the last two regional finals, rounded out the top six teams, and is led by 1,000-point scorer Taylor Seeley. Penquis of Milo, Foxcroft, Dexter and Madawaska completed the tourney field.

Schenck is only non-County team among girls’ D top four By Andrew Neff BDN STAFF
Life isn’t predictable, and the same can usually be said of the high school basketball season, but this year things went pretty much according to form — at least in the upper reaches of the Eastern Maine Class D girls ranks. When polling the coaches of the more successful teams from recent seasons, the same names kept coming up when asked who would be in the top half of the tourney contender field: defending state champion Fort Fairfield, Central Aroostook of Mars Hill, Washburn, and Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook. As the regular season came to an end, the official Heal Point standings had Washburn first, followed in order by Central Aroostook, Schenck of East Millinocket, Southern Aroostook, and Fort Fairfield.
OK, so maybe Schenck was a surprise, but surprises were few and far between this season. “I think Darrick’s [Schenck head coach Darrick Thompson] done a great job at Schenck starting three freshmen and playing the tough Class C schedule they play,” said SACHS Warriors coach Cliff Urquhart. “That’s the biggest surprise to me as far as how the standings wound up.” Then again, his own team surprised Urquhart at least a bit with the way it built chemistry and won 15 straight games despite the loss of four starters, a sluggish preseason, and two straight losses to start the season. Much of that is due to the continued strong play of returning veterans like twins Janel Rockwell and Jasmine Rockwell, Shelby Hartin, and Olivia Raymond. The rest is due to drastic improvement of junior Katelyn Somers, plus immediate contributions from See D GIRLS Page 13

freshmen Sable Altvater and sophomore Desirae DuBois. “We’re a much lower-scoring team this year and playing at a much slower pace, but I think we’re playing better defense and limiting our opponents to one shot more often,” Urquhart said. “I don’t believe we’ve been outrebounded all season.” With three returning starters, Rod Codrey’s Central Aroostook Panthers’ expectations were higher than their Aroostook counterparts in Dyer Brook, but while aspirations were high, pressure was not. That’s the benefit of playing for a school with one of the more high-profile boys teams in all of Class D and Eastern Maine basketball. When a team has won three of the last six state titles, it tends to put others in its shadow. “I can tell by looking at the crowds we get that a lot of people don’t focus too much on the girls teams, so we don’t have to contend as much with the pressure of being
a high seed,” said Codrey. “For me I think it’s a plus when there’s another team taking some of the spotlight off you. And you can also use it for motivation.” The Panthers’ primary motivation is to win their first Eastern Maine title since 1993. Despite a 14-3 record and No. 2 seeding, the Panthers are anything but a shoo-in for that due a very young roster and the solid competition they’ll get from the rest of a talented tourney field, including 16-2 Deer Isle-Stonington and worrisome underdogs like Shead of East Machias, Bangor Christian, Van Buren, and Jonesport-Beals. “We have seven sophomores, but they’re coming along pretty well,” said Codrey. That’s not to say there’s no experienced talent. Returning starters Rachael Grew, Kirsten Long, and Vicki McIntyre have enjoyed solid seasons again, but Kayla Cushman has helped to fill the void of the departed starters, and Olivia Garrison has become one of the team’s top defensive stoppers. Senior forward Andrew Austin and senior guard Cote Card are two of the more complete twoway players in the Big East Conference, with senior Jordan Carter and junior Nick Holt armed with 3-point shooting range to complement a quickness-based defense that like Camden Hills fuels its offense by forcing turnovers. Depth within the KVAC ranks comes from Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, Winslow, Gardiner, and Nokomis of Newport. Medomak Valley boasts a quality big man in 6-foot-6 sophomore John Murray, as does Winslow in 6foot-4 Mike McCann. Nokomis is

headed for its first postseason appearance since 2003 behind one of the state’s top all-around players in 6-foot-3 junior Chris Braley. Presque Isle ended the final week of regular-season play with just one loss, a 55-50 decision at Ellsworth on Dec. 28. Coach Tim Prescott’s Wildcats are led by the leading scorer in the Big East in senior guard Travis Dyer, as well as two other top-quality players in Oliver Zubrick and Alex Tuttle. Mount Desert Island is one of the bigger and deeper teams in the division, while Caribou has worked its way back into postseason play with aggressive defense and patient offense. And Hermon, ousted from the playoffs on the final night of the regular season a year ago, parlayed a strong second half of the season — winning six of eight games — into a preliminary-round berth this winter. contributions in recent games also coming from Jeremy Beers and Roger Socobasin. Sumner of East Sullivan and Washington Academy of East Machias finished in sixth and seventh places, respectively. Five teams — Madawaska, Piscataquis of Guilford, Fort Kent, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill, and Foxcroft Academy — entered the final week of regular-season play battling for the final three preliminary-round berths.

Urquhart has an answer that’s hard to argue
with. “You have to start with Fort Fairfield,” said Urquhart. “You can’t count out the defending state champs when they have their best player and a couple other starters back. Continued from Page 9 thing that separates the “favorites” from the contenders or dark horse candidates in a better-than-average tourney field. That’s something teams like Central Aroostook, Schenck, and Jonesport-Beals have plenty of in the form of returning starters and reserves from teams making deep tourney runs the last one to two seasons. “We had a good corps of returning kids who are basketball smart with our best four, and the younger kids have really come along,” said MacLean. Levasseur has three starters back who will play on the Bangor Audi-
torium court at this time of year for a fourth straight season. “Experience can make all the difference, but the big thing to me is winning that first game in the quarterfinals,” Levasseur said. Perhaps the best way to illustrate this field’s strength is that the team with the best record (Washburn at 16-2) isn’t even ranked in the top two. The Beavers are third. “I think we can have a bunch of upsets, like with Machias for instance because they have two big guys around 6-5 who’ll be matchup problems for most teams,” Billings said. “We’ve lost six games this year and would have won at least three of them if we’d shot better from the line,” said Levasseur. “Everything is magnified this time of year.”

NEWS will present Warner, Osborne awards to top tourney players It is the most eagerly anticipated week of the year in eastern Maine sports — the Maine Principals’ Association Eastern Maine basketball tournament. With the spotlight trained on the Bangor Auditorium and the Augusta Civic Center, the best teams and players in the region converge in their quest for the ultimate prize — a gold basketball. Invariably, a handful of clutch players emerge who can handle the pressure and perform when it counts most while helping their teams win regional titles. Those are the players who are recognized by the Bangor Daily News, which chooses its annual All-Tournament teams and bestows the William C. Warner and Owen O. Osborne Most Valuable Player awards. In 1994, the BDN initiated two MVP awards to honor former
sports editors Warner and Osborne, two longtime tourney fixtures. The Osborne Award goes to the top female player in each class, while the Warner Award is presented the top male performers. Winners in this 19th year will be selected by a vote of tourney media, MPA representatives, tourney officials and other veteran observers. Osborne was the BDN sports editor for more than 20 years. He died in 1978. Warner succeeded Osborne and held the same post until shortly before his death in 1994. Since the inception of the BDN’s MVP awards, 104 winners from 64 schools have been honored. Ashley Ames of Dexter, Lanna Martin of Calais and Morgan Frame of Waterville have the See AWARDS, Page 26

Madden is the only MVP recipient to win for two different schools (Bangor Christian in 2003 and Calvary Chapel in 2004). Calais High has produced 12 MVPs in 19 years, seven girls and
ners and Cony of Augusta has had eight, all girls. This year, eight more players will earn the distinction, etching their names permanently into Eastern Maine tournament lore. William C.
