Sport and Entertainment
Placemaking for a Modern World BDP Pattern is the sport and entertainment division of BDP, an international design practice working across multiple sectors with offices across the globe. Our sport and entertainment projects deliver the best in spectator experience, fostering a sense of theatre and occasion, with rigorous technical and functional excellence. We respond to a place’s culture and climate to create memorable sporting and hospitality venues. Good design meets the challenges posed by a dynamic and changing world. We design at every scale and at every stage in the process of making places, from visioning and briefing to design, delivery and operation. The places we create are distinct, social, natural, useful and beautiful – designs that achieve a balance between the man-made environment and the natural world. BDP works closely with a wide range of high-profile clients to deliver a range of projects across sport, leisure, entertainment, hospitality, heritage, healthcare, education and culture sectors. We offer the full range of design disciplines and bring a unique combination of design excellence, multi-sector interdisciplinary expertise, delivery experience and knowledge. In this document, we illustrate the depth and range of our experience, and how we could be a valuable partner on your project.

We create designs that achieve a balance between the man-made environment and the natural world. Our projects enhance user experience by addressing well-being and visual harmony, utilising computational design to create complex structures efficiently that can respond to local context and climate.
A Unique Experience Sport generates strong emotions and identity for communities. The magic and folklore inherent to sports teams and their grounds is powerful and carries great influence. Modern sports venues need to retain and amplify these traits, placing spectator experience at the forefront. Major sporting events can bring the world together and leave lasting positive legacies for local communities.
Successful venues create an exciting and engaging atmosphere. By considering sightlines, acoustics, climate, safety, audio, branding and connectivity, our projects heighten the excitement and comfort experienced by spectators.
Design Innovation Our passive-first approach to sustainable design uses the fundamentals of building geometry and architectural concept to minimise the environmental impact of each project. We aim to optimise solar incidence, airflow, rain protection and daylight levels for a project’s location and climate in order to create the ultimate sporting experience. We use advanced computational design, parametric modelling and BIM to generate, test and evaluate countless design iterations in order to produce the complex geometric forms befitting iconic, high-performing sports venues.
Data-Driven Design and Delivery BDP Pattern’s design process is rooted in computational design, parametric 3D modelling, BIM and Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA).
Our data-driven approach delivers benefits and efficiencies for our clients and collaborators: • Real-time engagement with the design as it evolves via the 3D modelling, VR and AR technologies. • Accurate quantities and schedules to manage budgets and gain cost certainty.
• Recision information for contractors and fabricators to reduce risk pricing, and avoid coordination errors.
• Optimisation of the design to reduce waste and fabrication costs. • Coordinated design information across all disciplines to avoid costly clashes and errors during construction.

Legacy and Inclusion Sport has the amazing power to connect people and create incredible experiences for athletes and spectators alike. Participation and engagement in sport has proven benefits for health, wellbeing and social cohesion, and so sports infrastructure can benefit communities for generations.
plans in the final constructions, are key priorities in our work.
We are committed to creating fully inclusive environments that provide everyone the same experience and opportunities to experience sport. Our consulting division, Human Space provide our clients with specialist At BDP Pattern, we feel the advice and expertise in the areas of responsibility to ensure our projects inclusion, accessibility and wellness. deliver for both our clients and the local Together, we ensure our projects community. Envisioning the legacy of embody the latest thinking and our schemes, and then realising those innovation in inclusive design.
Revenue Analysis Sport and entertainment venues must deliver a rich and memorable experience for their visitors, and the best possible return for their investors. But the way fans consume sports and events is constantly changing, and so too their expectations. Our work involves careful analysis of markets, facilities and fan groups to
design places that are more than just a simple stadium or arena – they are destinations in their own right. Working with diverse stakeholders, we bring together the right mix of spaces and amenities for fans, hospitality and the public that extend the time that customers are at the venue and keep them coming back again and again.
Challenging Established Traditions At BDP Pattern, we look at our projects from first principles and challenge established but perhaps outdated traditions of delivering sports and entertainment buildings. In the Middle East, we challenged the convention of replicating Europeanstyle drip-line roof stadia (designed to keep spectators dry in the rain) in desert climates. The resulting Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium demonstrates that a sweeping, sunshade roof is better for spectator comfort, atmosphere, and turf grass growth. For the Mosaic Stadium in the Canadian prairie, we challenged the popular notion that an expensive closing roof was required to protect football fans from harsh winter and hot summer climates. Instead, we proposed a cost-effective “smart roof” that kept cold winter winds out in winter, but let cool breezes in during the summer, making best use of a challenging climate. Our approach to question the fundamentals for every project has led to a proven track record of delivering better spectator experience and functionality in more cost-effective venues.
Stadia
We deliver technical and functional excellence and foster a sense of theatre and occasion that only the best stadia and venues achieve, enhancing the drama of the collective sporting experience.
