Introduction BDP has a rich history of engineering buildings since our formation over fifty years ago. We believe that we are unique, with an approach that places our skills at the very heart of the collaborative design process, where we are able to influence the outcome from the outset. We are thoughtful, enthusiastic, and skilful, and our approach to design is fundamentally sustainable. With an holistic approach to design and an ability to communicate on all platforms, our engineers have a passion for delivering outstanding buildings and driving value for our clients. We are proud of our award winning projects that span across sectors and continents. Projects that demonstrate how a seamless integration of engineering, architecture and design is essential to create outstanding places for people. All our engineers recognise the importance of contributing positively in a creative way to the total building
design. We work closely with the whole design team, focusing on what can be achieved with lateral thinking while respecting constraints. Civil and structural engineers at BDP play a pivotal role in both inspiring innovative design and providing technical solutions which bring it to life. We work closely with architects, both inhouse and outside of BDP, to challenge thinking and push the boundaries of conventional design, advising clients from the earliest conceptual stages through to the completion of awardwinning, landmark projects. Our aim is to produce innovative, elegant and economic designs which are fully integrated with the objectives of the client and the other members of the team. We are world leaders in the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM). This technology enables us to offer clients seamless and fully integrated designs, earlier visualisations, more accurate material quantities, better coordination with the supply chain and ultimately faster error free build schedules.

The most challenging aspect of the structural design was the creation of the ‘ribbon’ aesthetic that required specific detailing to the structure and external façade. This is most prominent at the ‘prow’ of the building where the large conference space at the tip of the building cantilevers out over the main structure below.

BOXPARK Croydon
Ninety-six upcycled shipping containers are arranged around a central courtyard events space, and stacked up to 3 high, providing rental accommodation for 40 individual food and drink outlets. Inspiration is drawn from Chelsea Market NYC and Covent Garden Market, in that the food outlets ‘spill’ into the covered central events space, which doubles up to provide communal dining facilities.

BOXPARK Croydon utilises raw self-finish materials: black containers, black painted steel, clear corrugated polycarbonate roofing sheets, clear glazing and untreated softwood scaffold planks. This simple and robust aesthetic is further enhanced by the carefully considered coordination and detailing which results in a ‘deceptively simple’ composition.

60 Victoria Embankment is the London base of JP Morgan, the international banking and finance giant. The works included structural alteration and adaptations of a 1980s office block together with the Grade II Listed Old School Building, the former home of the City of London School, to create Grade A office accommodation.

Bridge Academy
The Bridge Academy in Hackney transforms the playground into social and learning gardens and canal side piazzas. The vertical school design idea creates a social gathering space at the heart of the school. The teaching and learning rooms rise above, stepping down on the canal side to give teaching terraces at every level.
Not only does the ‘wishbone’ steel skeleton generate a striking backdrop to the internal spaces, it functions efficiently and allows the internal floors to be ‘hung’ from above, creating a column free ground floor.

Owens Park Campus Redevelopment
BDP was commissioned by the University of Manchester to initially masterplan the redevelopment of the Owens Park student campus in Fallowfield, Manchester, and later to undertake the design of all the buildings forming part of the masterplan, which comprises over 3200 en-suite study bedrooms, as well as amenity buildings, all site infrastructure and an energy centre.

Nanjing Medical University
The 85,000sqm Nanjing Medical University project provides two new buildings on a prime site on the university’s Jiangning Campus, which is the first on the campus designed by a foreign design team. One is a teaching and research building, the other is an administrative building which also contains a museum and conference auditoria.
Structurally the earthquake resistant design features a number of impressive cantilevers over the adjacent lake, long span glazed roof structures which exploit the ‘folded’ forms, and large expanses of glazed curtain walling.
