2015 Italian Festival 3
21st Annual Italian Festival The Sons of Italy local Lodge #2631 is gearing up for the 21st Annual Italian Festival to be held October 3, 2015 from 10 am - 5 pm at the Bluefield Auditorium. We are excited about the Festival this year partly because we are bringing the best line up of talent we have ever had. We will have Casey Ferguson, a Willie Nelson impersonator and the Highway Legends Band; Donna Huber sharing a tribute to Shania Twain; and the fabulous Adam Tucker paying tribute to Tim McGraw. Most folks who have heard Adam are eager to hear him again. He relates to the crowd and his variety of music is sure to please everyone. We also will have Jenny Lynn, a singer from Man, WV. She has been touring since the age of 14 and has won many awards in Nashville. The entertainment is only the second best part of the Festival. Our Italian Buffet rivals none. We have our homemade spaghetti, lasagna, meatballs, sausages, subs and desserts. You will not go home hungry. We always sell out of our cannoli but this year we will have more than ever so hopefully, we will have plenty. People rush to our bake sale featuring our members own home- made desserts. Items go fast so get there early and have first pick. There are sure to be Italian Cream cakes, fudge, breads, candy, pumpkin rolls, cookies and more, enough to make your mouth water. We always have our home-made sauce and meatballs for sale. Our members make the sauce and meatballs from our own recipes. We can the sauce and freeze the meatballs. Stock up for a good supply all winter. Be sure to stop by our Italian souvenir booth for a wide selection of hats, scarves, aprons, mugs, t-shirts, sweat-shirts and much more. Everyone is Italian on Festival Day.
There will be a variety of local craft vendors on hand to shop after you eat. We will have crystal jewelry, baskets, books, Christmas ornaments, wreaths, fall decorations, more jewelry and crafts. You are sure to find something you can't live without. After eating your plated meal, you will want to top it off with some Spumoni ice cream or fried bread. Yum! We will also have Torrone Candy. You won't find this again until next year's Festival so be sure to visit this booth and pick some up. A group from Pikeview High School entertain the kids with balloon art and face painting. Just for attending, you can register for a lovely fall wreath to be given away. We will be selling raffle tickets for a 40" TV. These drawings will be at 5 pm Saturday. You see there is something for everyone in the family. Come early and enjoy a delicious lunch or come later for an early supper.
The Festival is our main fund raiser each year for our scholarship program. We have given over $150,000 in scholarships and donations. This past May we awarded 9 scholarships to deserving young people to further their education. We have made charitable donations to the Bluefield Union Mission, Bluefield Fellowship Home, the Red Cross, Make A Wish Foundation, Holiday of Lights, Salvation Army and local food banks. We are proud of our work and what we have accomplished. We would love to have you join our Lodge and have some fun with us. See any member at the Festival for more information. We are most appreciative of GRANT'S SUPERMARKETS for sponsoring us again this year. Don't forget - Saturday, October 3. We hope to see you there.

The Order Sons of Italy in America is the largest and longest established organization in the United States for men and women of Italian heritage. What began in 1905 as an organization to support the assimilation of Italian immigrants into American society has become a powerful group of civic minded individuals of Italian decent. Both nationally and on the local level the OSIA raises funds for charities, including: • • • • • • • • • •
Alzheimer's Association American Red Cross The Arthritis Foundation March of Dimes Diabetes Foundation Cooley's Anemia Foundation SLE (Lupus) Foundation Make a Wish Foundation Ellis Island Foundation American Cancer Society
We celebrate our past heros by being a part of the National World War II Memorial and National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial fund raising efforts and we support our future heros by providing educational scholarships to our local youth. It is important that we preserve our Italian heritage and promote positive images of Italian Americans to reduce discrimination against ourselves as well as other minority groups. The OSIA of Southern West Virginia is deeply involved in local community efforts other than those addressed by the national organization.

Polenta in Carrozza POLENTA SANDWICHES Polenta is very versatile. When it is cold, it can be sliced and layered into a type of lasagna or used like bread. A favorite is to have it as a sandwich, stuffed with cheese and ham then fried in butter. With a salad and a glass of wine, this makes a very satisfying meal. • • • • • •
1 recipe Polenta chilled 3 large eggs 1/2 pound prosciutto, thinly sliced 1 1/2 cups fresh bread crumbs 1/2 pound Fontina cheese, thinly sliced 5 tablespoons butter
Cut the polenta into 12 slices. Top 6 of the slices with the prosciutto and then the cheese. Top each sandwich with another polenta slice. In a shallow bowl, beat the eggs. Spread the bread crumbs on a plate. Dip both sides of each sandwich in the eggs and then dredge in the bread crumbs to coat both sides. Set the sandwiches aside on a baking sheet to dry slightly. In a frying pan, heat the butter. Add the sandwiches and fry on both sides until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Serve immediately.
Spaghetti With Our Famous Homemade Sauce With Sausage Meatballs
Homemade Lasagna
September usually brings plenty of fresh tomatoes and basil to prepare a basic tomato sauce to use with everything. You do not have to skin the tomatoes; just use the food processor to pulverize them into a pulp. There are many variations on Italian tomato sauce, some simmered all day and some ready after a couple stirs of the spoon. If you don’t want to bother with fresh tomatoes, this recipe works with canned plum tomatoes. Look for the San Marzano variety: They are sweet and juicy. • • • • • • •
5 pounds ripe plum tomatoes or 3 28-ounce cans crushed plum tomatoes 1 1/2 cups dry red wine 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup diced onion 3 cloves garlic, minced Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 4 or 5 large sprigs basil
If using fresh tomatoes, core them, cut them into coarse chunks, and puree in a food processor until smooth. Strain the fresh or canned tomatoes through a fine sieve to remove the seeds. Set aside. In a deep heavy pot, heat the olive oil. Add the onion and sauté until soft. Add the garlic and sauté until soft. Add the tomatoes and stir to blend. Add the wine, salt and pepper, and basil and stir well. Bring to a boil, lower the heat, and simmer for 25 minutes. The sauce is ready to use, or it can be refrigerated for up to 1 week or frozen for up to 3 months.
