IN Mauritius: West is Best - it’s a fact! The east and south coasts tend to suffer most from the annual south-east trade winds, especially from April to October. The east coast can be cooler during these months due to the strong winds and higher rainfall, and because of this, is less inviting for water activities.

Take a look at the weather charts produced by Mauritius Meteorological Services (on the right and online) and you will see exactly why “West is Best” - less rain and days with rain, breezes that are balmy rather than windy, and more sunshine! Mauritius sits just above the Tropic of Capricorn, which means it does not suffer from extreme temperatures. Like all subtropical islands around the world, there is a chance of a cyclone in the hotter and more popular months from December to March. As Mauritius is a small island the effects are short-lived.

Air Mauritius operates a weekly flight into Sydney and out of Melbourne to Mauritius. A direct service, Perth/ Mauritius/Perth also operates once per week. Both Air Mauritius and Air Austral have domestic interline connections available using Virgin Australia.

The Birth of Paradise Mauritius has a diverse culture developed and influenced over centuries by foreign settlement. Although discovered by the Arabs and Portuguese, it was the Dutch who first settled in 1598, naming the island after Prince Maurice of Nassau.

Beachcomber Hotels is consistently acknowledged as the most successful hotel group in Mauritius and each year reinvests millions to renovate, rebuild and modernise resorts, ensuring the finest Mauritian holidays for our guests.

The introduction of sugar cane and deer was offset by the demise of the ebony forests and the extinction of the famous dodo bird. The Dutch departed in 1710 and the French settled soon after, renaming the island Ile de France.

Some recent investments include the renovation of Le Canonnier (2005), renovation of Le Victoria, Upgrade of Paradis Villas, Upgrade of Superior Rooms and addition of a Wellness Centre at Shandrani (2006), complete renovation of Le Mauricia, new pool and Spa by Clarins at Royal Palm (2007), 28 new plunge pools were added to Sainte Anne Resort, Seychelles, work on the new Morocco development Royal Palm Marrakech, Thai restaurant added at Shandrani, purchase of Domaine L’Harmonie, a west coast residential and hotel development (2008), Italian restaurant and 5 new pools added at Dinarobin Hotel Golf & Spa (2009/10), Trou aux Biches demolished and rebuilt as a new 5 star luxury village which opened in November 2010.

The British arrived in 1810 and named the island Mauritius. The abolition of slavery in 1835 led to the indenturing of Indian and Chinese labourers, whose religions, cultures and rights were respected. In 1952 Beachcomber started tourism in Mauritius with the building of Le Chaland (later rebuilt as the Shandrani Resort & Spa). In 1968 Mauritius gained independence and in 1992 was proclaimed a republic. Beachcomber established promotional offices around the world, with the Australian office opening in 1995.

Beachcomber Hotels was the first group in Mauritius to move to sustainable tourism and development, saving energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, helping the environment and aiding local communities. Popular activities in Mauritius

Walk With The Lions/Casela The signature activity at Casela is the amazing Walk With The Lions. On the Walk there are plenty of photo opportunities as guests get to interact with lions, including the famous ‘white lions’ and cubs. A recent addition is an amazing walk with a lion and a tiger. The 10 hectare Park is also home to more than 140 species of exotic, rare and endangered birds, and a mini-zoo with tigers, cheetahs, monkeys, lemurs, stag, and a lake with flamingos. For the adventurous there is a fantastic zip-line, buggies, quad bikes and the latest two wheeled toy, the Segway. Bookings for Walks are essential and should be made a month in advance.

Horse racing at Champ des Mars, Port Louis

Catamaran Cruise Extremely popular in Mauritius are the fun-filled catamaran cruises, which operate daily. A day trip outside the reef will take you to the stunning Ilot Gabriel and the outer islets in the north. On the cruise along the west coast it is possible you will come across one of the friendly and entertaining pods of Spinner or Bottlenose dolphins. The cruise from Shandrani sails inside the reef to Ile aux Cerfs, a beautiful lagoon with plenty of water activities. Cruises include a BBQ lunch and drinks and most offer allow time for some snorkelling in the pristine waters.

Port Louis A visit to the capital city of Port Louis is a must. Barter in the lively markets, explore museums, mosques and temples, or stroll along Le Caudan Waterfront, with its boutiques, cinemas, casino and local craft market. The palm-lined Place d’Armes offers great photo opportunities and for views of the city and harbour, drive to the viewpoint at Fort Adelaide. Champ de Mars, the world’s second oldest horse racing track, is located in Port Louis and runs meetings from April to December. With prior notice, Beachcomber can organise individual and group attendance at the races in a VIP box.

The exotic Pamplemousses Garden was constructed in 1770 and is one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens. It is home to many indigenous and unusual species of plants including the giant Victoria Regia waterlilies and the Talipot palm which flowers only after 60 years, then dies. After the gardens, take a tour to nearby L’Aventure du Sucre, a former sugar mill, now an interactive exhibition that showcases the history of Mauritius and the importance of sugar in the development of the island.

The island’s tourism hub, Grand Baie is home to a variety of restaurants, bars, clubs, supermarkets and boutiques. Well known international fashion labels can be found at attractive prices, and the local markets welcome a good haggler! Allow time to hire a motor scooter, take a catamaran cruise to Ilot Gabriel, do an Undersea Walk or ride a subscooter, go big game fishing or para-sailing. Tempt you taste buds with the colourful roadside vendors’ delectable Mauritian snacks like dholl puri, roti, samosas, chilli bites and fresh fruits.

Central to Chamarel is the stunning Rhumerie du Chamarel, a working distillery that produces the finest of Mauritian ‘rhums’. Discover the art of rum making from its beginnings as sugar cane, right through to bottling. And the best part? Sampling the award winning produce! Chamarel is also home to a geological phenomenon known as the ‘Coloured Earths’, the result of centuries of erosion of compacted volcanic ash. In addition Chamarel has the island’s most spectacular waterfall and is renowned for its coffee bean production.

Location, Location, Location! As pioneers of Mauritian tourism, Beachcomber had first choice of resort locations. They selected the most idyllic sites, on the best beaches which are mainly along the island’s protected west coast. At some Mauritian hotels you must cross a road to the beach, or beaches are overcrowded as they are too small for the size of the resort.

Accommodation – It’s only a room... until you have to stay in it! Accommodation is more than just a room and is a vitally important part of a beach holiday. The average coastal temperatures range from 21 to 28 degrees. Mountain areas and the east coast region will be cooler and more prone to changes in weather so a light weight jacket and raincoat (or poncho) along with comfortable walking or hiking shoes is recommended. Like Mauritius, the west side is the more holiday friendly area with the east coast suffering from the annual trade winds. The west coast is protected by the amazing mountains providing warmer drier weather and magical sunsets. The milder dry season lasts from May to October while the summer months are from November to April.

Airlines The best ways to get to Reunion from Australia are with Air Austral which departs from Sydney or with Air Mauritius via Mauritius which departs from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Connections from other cities can be arranged.

Things to See & Do in reunion Reunion is a fantastic holiday destination with a wide variety of sightseeing and adventure activities, some great beaches, interesting markets and quaint restaurants and boutiques.

The Cirques Being volcanic, the geography of Reunion is unique. The island’s famous natural formations are its three cirques amphitheatre-like valleys. Formed inside Piton des Neiges (meaning ‘Snow Peak’), the volcano that gave birth to Reunion, the cirques of Salazie, Cilaos, and Mafate are all different in vegetation and terrain.

Cilaos The Cirque de Cilaos is a natural wonder and the drive is memorable with hundreds of twists and turns and numerous tunnels. The village of Cilaos’ attractions include local vineyards, lentil production, embroidery work and the unique thermal baths. Rock climbing and trekking are popular activities

Mafate Cirque de Mafate is totally surrounded by mountains and is only accessible by foot or by helicopter. The unspoiled wilderness of this cirque is a favourite destination for hikers. A number of mountain ‘gites’ (small cabins) are available for overnight stays. For spectacular views of Cirque de Mafate, go to the 2200 metres high Maido Peak.

Salazie Cirque de Salazie is the largest and greenest cirque with its long, deep canyon, lined with magnificent waterfalls, steep cliffs and plunging valleys. One of the most breathtaking waterfalls is Le Voile de la Mariée (bridal falls). Nearby is the beautiful village of Hell-Bourg.

Volcano - Piton de la Fournaise Situated in the southeast corner of Reunion and reaching 2,631m high, is Piton de la Fournaise (Furnace Peak), one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Tourists can walk to the top of the mountain or take a shorter trek to the baby crater, Leo Formica.

Saint Denis The capital Saint Denis, is surrounded by mountains on three sides and is home to many charming Creole buildings, historical monuments, art galleries, museums and shops.

St Gilles-les-Bains With a 20 km stretch of beach, this is the islands main region for beach holidays. It and the Boucan Canot area, have many restaurants, cafes and bars providing a vibrant nightlife and holiday atmosphere. Diving and snorkelling are popular activities in this region.

St Leu St Leu, located on the west coast, is the islands number one surfing location. Surfers from around the globe come to ride the legendary left hand break.

Hell-Bourg Located on the edge of the Cirque de Salazie, Hell-Bourg, with its stunning Creole architecture, is a quaint mountain village which has been the recipient of France’s ‘most beautiful French village’ award. Enjoy some traditional cuisine.
