Trick or Treat Food Truck Fest set for Variety Village EAST TORONTO residents are invited to take part in a Halloween Toronto Food Truck Festival in support of Variety Village. The Trick or Treat Toronto Food Truck Festival takes place on Saturday, Oct. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 31, outside at Variety Village on Danforth Avenue in southwest Scarborough. Organizers said that with 2020 having been such a scary one for everybody, and most Halloween gatherings not allowed due to COVID-19 concerns, the goal for this year’s event is “more fun than frightening.” The festival will be a family friendly and accessible Halloween celebration. There will be lots of food and drinks available courtesy of Canadian Food Truck Festival members, entertainment, crafts, kids costume contests, a pet contest, and plenty of treats available for those attending. Entrance admission fee is a minimum $5 donation which will go to support Variety Village’s programs for individuals with disabilities. Food items and other refreshments are available for purchase at the food trucks taking part in the festival. Those attending are encouraged come in Halloween costumes. Mask wearing when standing in food truck lines will be necessary to keep everyone safe from COVID-19. Times for the festival are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 30, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 31. Slated entertainers include Nicole Rayy and Ty Baynton. There will also be a Beer Garden run by Leslieville’s Black Lab Brewing. Variety Village is located on Danforth Avenue just east of Birchmount Road. The Trick or Treat Toronto Food Truck Festival will be set up at the Village and also in the neighbouring parking lot of Birchmount Park Collegiate Insititute. Beach celebrates Olympic medals with Penny Oleksiak at food donation drive By Alan Shackleton

CANADIAN OLYMPIC hero and Beacher Penny Oleksiak came home to meet and sign autographs for a huge number of her fans yesterdre, while also helping to collect donations for the Daily Bread Food Bank. The Give Back with Penny Oleksiak event was held on the afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 14, at the entrance to Kew Gardens park on Queen Street East in the Beach.

Boxes full of donations of nonperishable food items from those attending were collected for the Daily Bread Food Bank. More than 1,200 pounds of food was collected at the event, said the Daily Bread in a note to Beach Metro News. For almost two hours, Oleksiak signed photos of herself and chatted with her fans who lined up beyond the plaza in front of the park and well along Queen Street East.. “She is my favourite athlete in

the whole world,” said Audrey, 8, holding the photos that Oleksiak signed for her. “She’s my sports hero.” Oleksiak, 21, is Canada’s most decorated Olympic athlete in history. She achieved the honour by winning three medals in the pool at the Tokyo Olympic Games this past summer. Oleksiak won a silver and two bronze medals in Tokyo. She added them to the gold, silver and two bronze medals she won five years ago at the

Rio Olympics to give her a total of seven; more than any other Canadian Olympian. Oleksiak grew up in the Beach and attended Monarch Park Collegiate. Back in 2016, a community parade was held to celebrate her medal wins in Rio. To honour her locally for becoming Canada’s most awarded Olympian, Oleksiak said she wanted an event that would help those in need. And that is how Give Back with Continued on Page 4
