Balmy Beach Canoe Club’s 41st annual Hair of the Dog Run set for New Year’s Day THE BALMY Beach Canoe Club’s 41st annual Hair of the Dog Run is back for New Year’s Day. The run, which is a fundraiser for the club, could not be held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is back for Jan. 1, 2022, and those looking to take part are encouraged to register early. Russell Dunn, a lifelong member of the Balmy Beach Club, came up with the idea for the run back in 1980. Dunn passed away a number of years ago, but club members continue to keep the run going. The Hair of the Dog consists of two portions. There is a competitive nine-kilometre run which begins at noon; and a fun three-kilometre walk which begins at 11:30 a.m. Both events begin on the Boardwalk in front of the Balmy Beach Club facing the lake. A lunch at the club for participants usually follows the event.

Due to COVID-19 safety protocols, the number of participants in both the run/walk and lunch will be limited. Cost for participants depends on what event they are registered for, and if they also want to attend the lunch. A total of 176 participants will be allowed for the 2022 Hair of the Dog event, with 76 permitted to walk/ run and attend lunch; and another 100 permitted to only walk or run. Mike Mehak, one of the organizers for the 2022 event, said everyone is thrilled that the Hair of the Dog Run has returned after having to cancel at the start of this year. “Everyone is overjoyed. It’s a significant fundraiser for the canoe club, a real community event and a lot of fun,” he said. “Everyone is excited including the volunteers who are really looking forward to it.” Now entering its fifth decade,

Mehak said the run has become a New Year’s Day tradition for many local residents. “I think that everyone that knows about it really enjoys it. It means a lot to a lot of people and they enjoying coming out and taking part. It’s a great chance to see their friends and start off the new year.” Starters for the run/walk will be Beaches-East York MPP Rima Berns-McGown and Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith. Deadline for registrations is Dec. 27. Those participating in the run on New Year’s Day must collect their race kit on Dec. 30 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Proof of vaccination and photo ID will be required at the time of race kit pick-up For more information and to register, please go to www. balmybeachcanoe.com/eventdetails/2022-hair-of-the-dog

Donations still needed by Community Centre 55 for Share a Christmas WITH LESS than a week to go before Community Centre 55’s Share a Christmas campaign starts making deliveries to local families in need, donations are still being sought to make this year’s program a success. “We are still in need of donations from the community as the number of people needing our help has grown,” said Debbie Visconti, Executive Director of Community Centre 55. “We are giving out food gift cards, but we are aware that the cost of basic food items has increased over the past year. We have increased the value of the cards from what we gave out last year.” What is most needed by Community Centre 55 right now are financial donations for the purchase

of the grocery store gift cards. This can be done by dropping by Community Centre 55 at 97 Main St., or going to the website at www.centre55.com and clicking on the donations button. Also needed for Share a Christmas are gift cards that can be used by teenagers, and toys for younger kids. Volunteers will be delivering the toys to families on Dec. 18. “It’s been a rough couple of years for everyone, but especially for those that struggle to provide their families with the basic necessities of life,” said Visconti. “As food costs increase, families have to make critical decisions about how they spend their money and pay their bills. So we are pleased to offer them some assistance and a Christmas they may not otherwise have.”

REG LITTLE of Reg’s Appliance has been repairing East Toronto residents’ machines for almost 44 years, and he says he has no plans to ever retire. Reg has also been an advertiser with Beach Metro Community News for 43 years, almost as long as his business has been around. That makes him one of the paper’s longest continuous advertisers, which is something to celebrate in the 50th year of the paper. Reg said he’s always had a talent for fixing appliances and since his father was a refrigeration technician, he was learning about the job from a young age. When Reg was older, people started to bring around their broken-down cars for him to fix at his family’s home in southwest Scarborough. “I took all the technical courses in school and I was the go-to guy to fix everybody’s car. My driveway at my parents place would look like a garage because everybody would bring stuff to me to fix,” he said. After that, Reg became the youngest technician ever to be hired at Xerox Canada but said he left six months later because he didn’t fit the company mould. He dabbled around in other avenues before he started fixing his mom’s friends’ appliances. “I got myself an old van, and took out an ad in the Beach Metro newspaper in October ’78 and said

I’d see what happens. And I haven’t looked back since,” he said. Months later, Reg decided to open a store on Kingston Road where he’d sell appliances and provide repairs to residents. “When I first started I was hanging doors, fixing doorbells, doing every handy little thing that people were putting off or couldn’t do,” he said. “Things were going along well…the ads started taking off and people started calling me up. I was busy all the time and things were going along great.” Around 1981, Reg was bunking down in his store when an electrical fire started in the middle of the night, unfortunately engulfing it in flames. “I regrouped forces, kept the ads going, and kept the business going and did some sub-contracting on the side. I carried on and built it back up. The store was too much to handle so I just stuck to the service,” he said. In the following years, Reg continued to run his business and had two children. He also started a band that played at events such as the Canada Day Festival in the Beach and the Scotiabank Toronto Marathon as it ran through local neighbourhoods. Reg also fondly remembers participating in the Toronto Beaches Lions Club Easter Parade 12 years in a row. “We’d decorate the car with all these rabbits and everything, and one year it was on television. I would wave to 2,000 of my closest

Today, Reg is back living in his childhood home, a journey that he says has come full circle. “I’m so privileged to be able to live, work, and be part of the best part of the best city in the best country in the world. Bar none, the Beach is the best area of the city.” Over 44 years, Reg said he’s seen pretty much everything when it comes to working on appliances and other repairs. He said the world of service has changed considerably since he started his business. “Back in the day when service calls were like $20 or $30, you would go out and you would assess a situation, this is before the Internet. Nowadays, service calls are like $150.” He said he finds out everything he needs to know about the unit and the problem to know exactly what he’s dealing with and what parts he needs, and provides

residents with quotes over the phone. Reg continues to advertise with Beach Metro Community News in order to let the community know about the services he provides. “I like to keep busy and I like to be able to provide my regular customers that I’ve dealt with over the years with an honest service, and there’s no one else doing it. There’s no one else advertising for appliance repair in the Beach Metro,” he said. “All I can say is the appliances today are not made to be repaired. The manufacturer would rather have you replace them.” Today, Reg keeps repairing appliances when he’s not staying at his condo in Florida and running music jams. “If anybody wants to email me, I do what I can to provide them with the information necessary.” To contact Reg about appliance repair and his services, email reglit@yahoo.com

Main Street Library marks 100 years By Gene Domagala

THIS WEEK marks the 100th anniversary of the Main Street Library. A library, dear readers, is not a building made of bricks and stone – it is an idea that people have to be able to read and understand and think about life and the world and all its complications. The idea of a library actually began more than 125 years ago in the same area as where the Main Street Library is on Main Street south of Gerrard Street East in what was once the Town of East Toronto (1888 to 1908). There were schools in the area back then but no library. The residents, much like people today, looked for a place similar to our present library because they had a thirst for knowledge. Back then they found it at the YMCA which was located where Ted Reeve Arena now is. That was the beginning of the search for a library in the area more than 100 years ago.

Now let us jump ahead a few years as the YMCA was dismantled and did not have space for a library, but one was needed. Finally the idea of a local library came to fruition. It was built for the grateful people living in the area, and is a testament to their dedication, diligence and the quest to preserve the knowledge in books for the young, the old and the disadvantaged. Take a look inside the Main Street Library today and you will see it is made up of different sections for people of differing ages and also by subject matter. The first librarian was Margaret Wainwright and her task was challenging. The challenge continues today for librarian Sandra Lee who has to deal with maintaining a love of reading books and other material for people of all ages. The original Main Street Library was small and inadequate for the growing population of the area, and in the 1970s a movement was

undertaken to improve and expand the facility. Now, after 100 years, the library is still a people place and that could not have been done without the work of the librarians and staff. For those who would like to learn more about the history of the Main Street Library, The Beach and East Toronto Historical Society will be presenting a virtual presentation on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 14. The presentation by Fiona Smith, of the Toronto Public Library, and Barbara Myrvold, of The Beach and East Toronto Historical Society, will begin at 7 p.m. It will talk about the Main Street Library’s history (originally it was called the Eastern Branch) and include a virtual tour. For the link to the presentation, please go to www.tbeths.com. On Dec. 15, residents are invited to the Main Street Library branch to share their favourite memories which will be added to a scrapbook, and for other informal events.

Black Lives Here

Continuing the conversation with Ingrid Palmer Mimi Liliefeldt mimi@missfit.ca

L

ast month we met Ingrid Palmer, a truly inspirational member of our community. If you haven’t read the first part of her story, we covered how Ingrid, a Black woman, grew

up visually impaired (later diagnosed legally blind), a survivor of sexual abuse and went from foster care to living in a group home in her teens. Today, Ingrid is the Director of Networks and Relationships at Toronto Neighbourhood Centres. TNC is a charitable organization that develops and delivers community services. According to the TNC website, the services “play a central role in fostering key characteristics of supportive communities, such as Inclusiveness, Opportunity, and Mutual Support”. After graduating from high school, Ingrid went to Centennial College but in her first year she became pregnant with her daughter. When it was time to go back, she applied at York University and graduated with her BA. Despite the top marks she earned, finding a job post university proved to be a challenge. “I couldn’t get a job to save my life. I’d always done well at school and so that’s where my validation and pride came from. At that point in my life, I never disclosed my degenerative eye condition, my eyesight was always declining but back then it was much better. The

last job I’d held at that point was the Delta Chelsea Hotel, I had to hold a lot of information in my head. I did a good job, but the one thing that always held me back at work was that I’d walk into things because of my tunnel vision, so that would always hold me back from promotions,” said Ingrid. “When I became legally blind in my late 20s, I decided I wasn’t going to hide it anymore and it was really stressful. I had to be upfront but doing that was a death sentence for employability. My grades could not overcome the stigma of blindness. Employers started saying I was overqualified as an excuse, so after a couple of years I dropped my degree from my resume. And even then, I couldn’t get anything. When I started looking at jobs that were geared to persons with disabilities, that’s when I first discovered even there, people would rather you had a different type of disability, not blindness. Nobody wants a blind person working for them. I fell into a depression because being on social assistance was not supposed to be my life. I had a lot to give, I felt so wasted, I was supposed to have a good paying job and a great life.”

Beach resident Palmer.

Ingrid decided to focus on family. When her son was diagnosed with autism, she visited a model school with the diagnostic kindergarten program he needed. There she met Nancy Steinhauer, the principal at the time. “Before I even talked to anyone, I had already decided that I was going to refuse the placement because I didn’t like the location,” said Ingrid. “By the time Nancy had taken me on the tour and she finished telling me all the things she had done at that school, I thought, ‘I can’t wait for him to come here’! I knew the school was going to change his life, but what I didn’t know it was going to change mine too.” The school hosted many learning programs for the Continued on Page 5

Investing in people does make a real impact ‘Continuing’ from Page 4 parents, and Ingrid attended almost every single one. But the most amazing thing the school offered was Ingrid an opportunity to fulfill her passion for helping others by volunteering. “Nancy encouraged me to try out for the school council, but I said, ‘No I can’t because the meetings are always held at night, and I can’t get there’. I’d said this before to other principals and that was always the end of it, but Nancy said, ‘Oh, I’ll give you a taxi chit so you can make it’. She opened up this avenue of volunteering for me. I’d always wanted to do it, but I wasn’t sure how. From there my volunteering kept snowballing. I started giving talks because I rediscovered my voice and my value.” This small seeming solution of providing Ingrid with a taxi to be able to attend the school council meetings was the first step in changing the trajectory of Ingrid’s path. We spoke about the word ‘inclusion’ and how often it’s used, but what does it really mean? Ingrid said, “Kindness is a part of inclusion, but it doesn’t end there. It takes more effort and intentionality to create true belonging. How are people incorporated into the conversation? What impact is their voice having? Just having someone be there is not belonging.” Through her multitude of volunteer positions and years of personal experience, Ingrid has a developed a deep understanding of how to truly make spaces more equitable and inclusive. And now because of her devotion to social justice she has met some key individuals that have helped elevate her and create opportunities for her success. “At my volunteer work with PALS (Parent Advocacy Leaders) at MacAulay Child Development Centre they ended up hiring me to do staff training with them on anti-Black racism. Eventually I became their Equity Coordinator. I also applied to a program with the Centre for Independent Living Toronto, who had a disability media lab where they wanted to promote stories from persons with disabilities. I was also known for my volunteer work in the poverty sector with Toronto Community Housing. From there I got connected to the Maytree Foundation who also hired me to do some presenting around poverty and housing,” said Ingrid. All the work and learning culminated into Ingrid’s dream for herself, a full-time job with a salary worthy of her expertise.

BEACH METRO COMMUNITY NEWS

A dramatic reading of

Through her work at Maytree, Ingrid was connected to TNC who hired her to do a presentation on engaging marginalized communities. “They were so happy with that presentation that when this job came up they sent it out to their network and I saw it,” said Ingrid. How she arrived at this opportunity is an incredible tapestry of dedication, determination and capability but even then, she had to overcome what society had instilled in her; limiting beliefs in herself. “Through my work with PALS, I met this woman named Irene who recommended this program called Up With Women that pairs marginalized women with a coach for a year to pursue their goal of becoming independent. I got accepted. I was with my coach for the year that I was doing all this work, and I almost didn’t apply for the job. When I was reading the job description I was thinking, ‘Oh my god, I can do this job! I’ve been doing this for free for years’! And then I get down to the bottom and I see the pay scale and I think, ‘Oh, maybe I can’t do this because it pays too well’. My coach helped me unpack my limiting beliefs and prepare for getting this job.” Ingrid loves her job. The journey she took was not a straight line, it was a web of multiple networks. She fully acknowledges we don’t do it alone. Though you may not know the good you’re doing, these important social programs and the individuals that take the time to invest in people do make an impact. She said, as only Ingrid can, “You’re planting a seed and watering it, but you don’t always get to see that flower bloom. You don’t always see the results of the work that you do but know that you are part of somebody’s growth process.” We can all be part of that growth process. I asked Ingrid which of her many organizations she could direct me and our readers to contribute towards. She recommends Up With Women and Child Welfare PAC (a charity advocating for a progressive child welfare system). There is so much of Ingrid’s wisdom I wanted to share, but let us leave her story with this: The weight of being a Black woman who is legally blind, and a survivor of sexual abuse and the child welfare system has been at times unbearably heavy and discouraging, but through the intentionality of people who truly wanted to include Ingrid and help raise up a woman that was so clearly capable and passionate she has been able to achieve what we all deserve—a great life.

In My Opinion

As pandemic goes on, local businesses need your support Carl Pratt Owner, Beaches Brewing Company HAPPY HOLIDAYS, everyone! I’m Carl, a 13-year resident of the Beach and the owner of Beaches Brewing Company. I’d like to talk about your local shops, some of my pandemic experiences, and the coming months. Winter in the Beach can be difficult for businesses during the best of times, and I think it’s fair to say we’re already seeing indications of a very slow winter. Last year it felt like there was a more deliberate push to support local, and this drop-off is probably from less government supports and a little more COVID fatigue. I’ll step out on a limb here and say that many of our businesses are nervous about the future. Frankly, your local shops,

services, and restaurants have had it hard. Trying to pivot, and pivot and pivot to scrape together some semblance of a business model every time the rules change. Taking risks in unfamiliar territory, just trying to hold on until a random point in time when these restrictions are lifted and old habits (like going out for dinner) are restored. To give some context, here’s a timeline from the perspective of the Beaches Brewing Company. March - April 2020: Shut it all down. Don’t leave your house unless absolutely necessary. Lay off all staff and hope to get them back, eventually. June 2020: Open a takeout pizza business with our old chef who is exchanging his time for use of the kitchen for his own startup. Sell retail beer out of our front garage

door. July – August 2020: Open a sidewalk patio with 1/3 the capacity of our restaurant. Labour is less available, so we simplify the food menu and expand offerings when possible. September 2020: Mull over the option of adding heaters to extend the patio season. Diners are allowed indoors but are extremely wary. October 2020: Indoor dining is shut down; outdoor dining is impractical with weather and spending thousands of dollars to fortify a patio that we’d only keep for another month wouldn’t bring enough people in to be viable. November 2020 - March 2021: Indoor dining ban is extended indefinitely, CaféTO patio is removed for winter. Closed the kitchen to focus on retail & online beer sales

versus competing in a crowded take-out market. Two Weeks in March 2021: Tables outside on nice days, offer beer and stuffed buns. Consider rehiring staff. April – May 2021: Never mind, shut it all down again. June – September 2021: Street patio returns more glorious than ever! Re-open the restaurant for the 3rd time. Three amazing months with some indoor dining. Still in a labour shortage, still running a simplified menu. Retail beer sales decrease. October 2021: Looks like things are open to stay. Learn and train staff on proof of vaccination systems and hope it provides confidence to patrons to head inside again! November 2021 – Present: Hire a chef, enhance menu, add pro-

gramming. Wait for 2019 levels of business to return… Hey, wait? Omicron? What? Sigh… If you have been making a point to support our great array of shops, restaurants, and services on Queen Street East then I applaud you. We need your support more than ever. For the rest of us, I’d like to propose a challenge: Get out there this winter and take advantage of your neighbourhood. It’s common to hear about all the summer tourists inundating our roads, restaurants, and parks; well, here we are, with the whole neighbourhood to ourselves! Get to know your local shops. They have all taken huge risks with the hope that they can stay and become an ingrained member of this community. -- Carl Pratt is a member of the board of The Beach BIA.

In My Opinion

Importance of community highlighted during the past year By Paula Fletcher, Toronto-Danforth Councillor

IT’S BEEN another year of the pandemic and we’ve been getting more used to all of the big changes made in 2020. It feels like we’re in a new “normal,” but I know 2021 has still been tough for many. Along with the difficulties we’ve faced, there have also been things to celebrate this year. The East End is a compassionate, active and thriving community and I wanted to share some milestones with you as we head towards the New Year. In the beginning of 2021 we received the amazing news that the COVID-19 vaccines were ready and the vaccination rollout would

begin. The Team Toronto vaccination campaign was a joint effort with Toronto Public Health, local hospitals, pharmacies and community partners. Locally, East Toronto Health Partners developed a vaccination plan to ensure community members had easy access to vaccines. I worked with their team to ensure all neighbourhoods in Toronto-Danforth had vaccine clinics and we identified locations where extra support was needed. I worked with our Community Ambassadors to distribute flyers and information and made sure the mobile vaccine teams visited our seniors’ buildings. As of Dec. 6, approximately 86 per cent of Torontonians have received two doses. This is an in-

credible achievement and I’d like to thank everyone involved in the vaccine rollout. We’re now working towards vaccinating children ages 5 to 11 and more than 60,000 doses have already been administered. I am continuing to work with East Toronto Health Partners to make sure everyone is able to get the jab, including booster doses as eligibility expands. The pandemic hit small businesses hard and I’ve been working closely with our Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) to make sure the supports needed are in place. Toronto’s successful CaféTO program was back for a second year and I know so many of you have enjoyed dining on the fantastic patios

here in the East End. I’m happy to share that Council has approved a plan to make CaféTO permanent and waive fees for 2022. Restaurants and bars can keep their sidewalk patios for the winter season and the curb lane patios will be back in the spring. There was more good news for small business as Council voted to create a new small business property tax subclass that will come into effect for the 2022 tax year. This could mean a property tax reduction of up to 15 per cent for many small businesses, helping to keep our main streets alive and vibrant. As we headed into the fall, COVID-19 cases were low and vaccination rates high, so we saw the return of some in-person

outdoor events. I know how much we’ve missed getting together the past two years, so it was great to have the pumpkin parades and tree lightings back. I hope we can bring back even more events in 2022. There have been many other wonderful milestones this year, such as the opening of the new Red Door Shelter in Leslieville, the city’s new Inclusionary Zoning policy, beautiful new local murals, and the ongoing work of our community heroes. If there is one thing we’ve learned in the pandemic, it is that we need to be able to adapt to keep ourselves and our community safe. I wish everyone a warm, safe and healthy holiday season and a very Happy New Year.

Letters to the Editor

Implementing 94 Calls to Action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is responsibility of all I specialize in Indigenous rights, Aboriginal policy and constitutional issues. I travelled with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for four years. I attended two Residential Schools from 1958 to 1968. I grew up in a Cree community on (Treaty 9 territory) along the shores of James Bay, formerly known as Rupert’s Land. We have unfinished business with the Canadian settlers. Canada benefitted from the Residential School system and historic trauma. The Residential School system attempted to “kill the Indian in the child.” The findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission were based on testimo-

nies of over 7,000 witnesses, mostly adult survivors of Residential Schools. It also identified education as an avenue for reconciliation. (Call to Action #62.) This tool of forced assimilation was used to remove Indigenous children from their parents, homes and communities as a means to prevent further spread of their language, ceremonies and the sustainability of their culture. Call to Action #58 calls upon the Pope to issue an apology to the survivors, their families, and communities for the Roman Catholic Church’s role in the spiritual, cultural, emotional, physical and sexual abuse of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis chil-

dren in Catholic-run Residential Schools. It is the collective responsibility of all Canadians, from coast to coast, to implement the 94 Calls to Action for true reconciliation. It’s also true that intergenerational survivors inherited the cultural impacts of the Residential School system and assimilation policies of the Canadian federal government. I encourage you to connect, engage and learn about Indigenous issues in your constituency or community. All My Relations! Michael Cheena, Survivor of the Residential School system

Community’s kindness a ‘George Bailey moment’ for crossing guard Re: ‘Local crossing guard asks for community’s help recovering backpack stolen while he was working’, Beach Metro Community News, Nov. 2. I rise every day filled with gratitude for another pass around the sun with my wife and family and great friends. I am truly thankful for each and every day, for the good things in my life, for the security of living in such a country, and for the possibility of serving my community and forging stronger bonds with the good citizens. But words fail me in attempting to express my gratitude to you, dear Beachers,

who have done so much to help me materially and spiritually. My faith in people was never shattered because of the selfish and despicable act of one person, but your words of shock and outrage, compassion and support have meant the world to me. Knowing how much esteem you carry for me fills my soul with gratitude. I am profoundly thankful to you all, dear sweet lovely people! Many of you have gone beyond words to offer material support that assuages the loss of my goods, and to you I offer these simple words as thanks. Thank you to Laura for

your ridiculously generous gift; thank you to Beach Metro Community News for spreading the word and casting the support net wide across the community; thank you Alyssa Volk Events for starting the GoFundMe account; thank you again to everyone who contributed to this stunning surprise; and thank you to all the others who have contacted me to offer their private contributions. I am absolutely blown away, and the only thing I can think of at this time is that this is my George Bailey moment. Truly: It’s A Wonderful Life. Paul Belyea

Open Doors: Spiritual Matters

Thanks to all the ‘St. Nicks’ who helped after injury St. Savior’s Anglican Church

THIS YEAR I believe that I have met many real St. Nicholases. They all had that whiff of heavenly generosity and miraculous feats about them. And many of them reside right here in the Beach. As I began the last day of my holidays I thought I’d better get a few groceries. It was early in the morning and I was almost at my destination when I was hit by a car at an intersection. I’d never been hit by a car before – I don’t recommend it. But I was lucky. The first Santa was right beside me when I came to – holding my (bloody) head in his hands and telling me not to move. He was an off-duty paramedic who happened to be walking by. Thank you sir, whoever you are. I thankfully did not have a concussion, so was aware of

what was happening during the next few hours. I had many injuries – broken bones and ribs, vertigo, scrapes, and bruises, stitches and staples. Every one of the paramedics and police attending me were kind and reassuring in those early hours. Thank you all. And apologies to all who lost power for a few hours that day. My long stay in the hospital was definitely not what I would have chosen, but the medical team wanted to ensure I was OK before releasing me. I was amazed at how kind and caring they were. Despite being crazy busy, they were always cheerful and helpful when they came to see me. My friend (who is a chaplain at another hospital) alerted this hospital’s spirtual director to visit me. He came for a chat and brought me a Bible. Thank you to all the Michael Garron Hospital staff who helped me during my stay. Over the last three months of my recovery I have witnessed the incredible generosity of friends, family, Church, and daycare, and Beach neighbours. I came

home from the hospital and my backyard had been mowed. Another neighbour fed my cat. Offers of “can I do your shopping for you?” arrived weekly. Cards, flowers, books, DVDs and meal upon meal arrived daily. Porch visits (safely distanced) were frequent occurrences. A wonderful, recently retired Priest came and pinch-hit for me at our church for the entire three months. I am blessed. Most of us know that many of our friends have “St. Nick” tendencies, and when bad things happen, they’re on it. What also heartened me was the kindness of so many merchants on Kingston Road. Their heart felt greetings when I was finally able to be out-and-about was really touching. Their generous gifts of flowers, chocolate, etc... were truly unexpected. I want to thank all of the “St. Nicks” that have touched my life in such positive ways over the last three months. And I’d like to encourage all of us to “play the role” of Santa Claus this December. Even the tiniest gesture or word can make a world of difference. I know.

Reel Beach: Movies in East Toronto

Photographer Kerry Hayes reflects on his career, and Nightmare Alley Bernie Fletcher

A

lmost two years after a film crew descended on the R. C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, Nightmare Alley opens on Dec. 17. The psychological thriller from Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro features a stellar cast, but it takes hundreds of talented people working together behind the scenes to bring a movie to life. Still photographer Kerry Hayes kindly invited me to his Beach home for a talk

about his brilliant 40-year career on more than 100 film sets. BF: How did you get started in the movie business? KH: My career in the film industry was completely serendipitous. After I got out of college I drove a taxi in New York. That was fun for a couple of years, but eventually I realized it was not going to be fun for the rest of my life. I had recently discovered photography and I loved it, so I started working as an assistant for a number of commercial photographers. Within a few years I was out on my own shooting for Time Life Publications and

annual reports and exhibiting my personal work at Soho Galleries which was my ultimate goal. A friend told me about a gig that needed to be shot with an 8-by-10 view camera, skills I had learned as an assistant. Turned out it was production designer Mel Bourne. He needed large format negatives in order to produce the huge, scenic photo backdrops used on sound stages. For instance, they might shoot a scene that takes place in a penthouse with windows overlooking Central Park so they build a penthouse set on a sound stage, but you have to see Central Park out the windows. So I started shooting these plates for a number of movies. That eventually led to my first gig as an on set photographer on Woody Allan’s Zelig. And the rest is history. BF: You have worked with great directors on Oscar-winning films such as Prizzi’s Honor, Legends of the Fall, Spotlight, The Shape of Water and now Nightmare Alley. Do you get much direction in your work? KH: On set movie photographers rarely get direction from the directors. My job

I’m on the set every day of production. It’s a union position and I’m part of the camera crew. You need to be very unobtrusive. You really don’t want the director to even know you are there. You want to stay out of the actor’s eye lines so you’re not distracting them. The fact that you don’t get much guidance on the set is really a nice part of the job. Nobody is paying attention to you. It’s a kind

of a freedom, a relaxed working condition for a still photographer on set, but it can be tense in other ways. Because I shoot while they are filming, you have to get the pictures that the studio needs without disturbing the actors or anyone else for that matter and not disturb the filmmaking process. You have to be absolutely silent and unobtrusive. It’s a learning process that takes a while to figure out. How do you remain invisible and silent on the movie set and

get the shots you need? The skill set is photographic, of course, but also intuitive; knowing what scenes are important, recognizing key moments that you need to capture. The other part is learning how to do it silently without getting in people’s way and most importantly without distracting the actors or the director. You’re usually working right beside the film camera, you have to stay out of everybody’s way. If it’s too Continued on Page 13

crowded and somebody’s got to go, it’s you. You work right beside the film crew, but you always have to give way if they have to be somewhere you want to be. During rehearsals you work out what your moves are going to be, it’s kind of a dance. It’s a bit easier today because everybody is off looking at a monitor away from the camera so you don’t have so many bodies right around the camera. BF: Movie posters are sometimes taken from your stills. A poster helps define what the film is about. Your photo “Fedora” is an evocative image of Bradley Cooper in Nightmare Alley. How did you capture that look and mood? KH: It’s your eye as a photographer and your intuition and insight about the film, knowing when you must get a particular shot. You’re always looking for images that convey the look and mood of that movie as you put it, what the film is about, that says something about a particular character or the relationships. The more information a par-

ticular still image reveals about any or even all of those considerations the more important it is for you to capture it. Recognizing those moments and being able to get in there and get it is what makes you successful as a unit photographer. For instance, the picture of Bradley Cooper with the hat in the elevator. I thought it was just a shot of him walking out of an elevator. But then, luckily, I went and looked at the monitor and I saw that it started with that graphic, mysterious shot with the hat. I ran over for the last take and grabbed that shot. You have to be able to recognize those shots and make sure you get them. Part of the art of being a good set photographer is just that, looking for the photo that could be used in a poster or in a promotion or the key set of images that studios will assemble from the literally tens of thousands of photos you take. BF: You are transitioning from the film industry to fine art. KH: I have always considered myself as first an artist. I had some shows in New York, where I am from, early on in my career and I’ve

always kept a hand in it. Recently I have learned how to print and I just love it, I do my own printing for exhibits and galleries. Although I’ve retired from movie set photography I will be publishing a book in 2022 featuring 40 years of my behind the scenes photos from some of the era’s most iconic films. It is titled “Waiting for ‘AC-

TION!’” with a foreword by Guillermo del Toro. Readers will soon be seeing Hayes’ work from Nightmare Alley everywhere and prints of his beautiful personal art photography can currently be seen at Skaut Design on Kingston Road. where they are available for purchase. I can hardly wait to see Nightmare Alley!

BEACH METRO COMMUNITY NEWS

The Brandenburg Project set for Kingston Road United THE KINGSTON Road Village Concert Series presents The Brandenburg Project, a three-concert program of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos beginning in January. Featuring renowned violinist Mark Fewer, members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and faculty and senior students from the University of Toronto, the concerts will be held at the church, 975 Kingston Rd. on Jan. 23, March 6 and March 27 at 3 p.m. A subscription to the three-concerts would make a great Christmas gift, said organizers, and can purchased

at www.kruc.ca/concert-series for $90. Tickets for individual concerts are at Eventbrite at https://brandenburgproject. eventbrite.com for $35. All COVID safety protocols will be followed at the concerts. When we all need community more than ever, the church is inviting residents to be a part of the roof revitalization project. Donations can be made by e-transfer through the church website at donations@kruc.ca (password: Kingston) or in person at the Brandenburg Project concerts.

Winter Solstice welcomed with concert THE FLAME Eternal: A Musical Meditation and Concert for the Winter Solstice will be presented by Beach composer and guitarist Mark Battenberg on Monday, Dec. 20, at 7:30 p.m. at Kingston Road United Church. Battenberg will be joined by cellist Kendra Grittani, violinist Julien Altman, vocalist Xueao Yang, and Shakuhachi flute master Debbie Danbrook. Those attending are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation. All COVID protocols will be in place at the concert.
