Fundraiser set up for family of East York fatal shooting victim Jordon Carter, 15 Police have charged 13-year-old boy with second-degree murder

By Jesse Gault

A GO Fund Me page has been set up for the family of a 15-year-old East York boy who was shot and killed last week. Jordon Carter, 15, died on the night of Wednesday, Jan. 19, after he was shot in the underground parking garage of a Gamble Avenue apartment building. Police arrested and charged a 13-year-old boy with second-degree murder the next day in connection with Carter’s death. Carter was “a talented 15-yearold young man and loved skateboarding,” said the Go Fund Me page. “He was a beautiful soul who

was loved by all his friends and anyone who ever met him. We are all devastated by this loss.”

Police were called to the Pape and Gamble area at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 for reports of

a shooting. When officers arrived they found Carter in an underground parking garage with life threatening injuries and he died at the scene, police said. During a press conference at Toronto Police Headquarters on the morning of Friday, Jan. 21, police said two guns as well as ammunition were found in the parking garage where the fatal shooting took place. “Both families in this case are understandably devastated. We are supporting them in the best way that we can,” said Det. Sgt. Rob Choe of the Toronto Police homicide squad at the press conference. Continued on Page 5

Neighbours help Pearl Haynes celebrate 100th birthday FRIENDS AND neighbours helped local resident Pearl Haynes celebrate her 100th birthday last month. Haynes was serenaded by neighbours at an outdoor sing-along by her house in the Benlamond Avenue and Main Street area on the occasion of her birthday on Dec. 19. “Pearl has a great laugh, a robust appetite, a beautiful wildflower garden, an incredible perspective on life and strong moral and religious calling,”

said neighbour Kate Morris. Haynes came to Canada in 1958 from Barbados. She had been married and subsequently divorced and was looking for new experiences. She had heard about a program for domestic workers in Canada and though she was technically older than the age limit, she was successful in joining the program. She lived in the Forest Hill area of Toronto and worked in the home of then chairman of the Bank of Nova Scotia,

City committee wants Dentonia Park Golf Course to stay at 18 holes DENTONIA PARK Golf Course will be remaining an 18-hole layout. At least that was the recommendation from the City of Toronto’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee earlier this month. On Jan. 11, the committee heard a report from the General Manager, Parks, Forestry and Recreation, and the Chief Procurement Officer, Purchasing and Materials Management regarding future plans for the city’s five municipally owned golf courses. The report called for Dentonia Park Golf Course to be reduced in size from its present 18 holes to nine holes. The report said a “master planning” process for uses on the rest of the land at the course site, just northeast of Victoria Park and Danforth avenues, would then be undertaken. However, city councillors on the committee voted for an amendment to the report

that said no further action would be taken on reducing the 18-hole, par-three golf uses at Dentonia Park. “City Council direct the General Manager, Parks, Forestry and Recreation, in consultation with Chief Procurement Officer and any relevant divisions, to maintain the existing 18-hole golf course structure at Dentonia Park Golf Course, while continuing to explore opportunities for further year-round recreation, multi-use arrangements, increased accessibility and affordability for golf use, and access to Taylor Massey Creek trail ravine,” read the approved amendment. The report, which also deals with plans for the city’s other municipal golf courses, now goes to Toronto City Council for approval at its Feb. 2 meeting. Toronto’s other municipally owned golf courses are Tam O’Shanter, Don Valley, Humber Valley and Scarlett Woods.

Sheila Cary-Meagher is shown in this Beach Metro Community News file photo. Cary-Meagher served for decades as a school trustee with the Toronto Board of Education and then the Toronto District School Board. Sean Meagher in announcing her death on Facebook. Earlier this year he had let the community know that his mother had entered palliative care as the cancer that had only been discovered late last year quickly progressed. “When people learned about the pancreatic cancer that had come on suddenly in December and took her only weeks later, they sent kind notes and memories. Far and away the most common phrase in all of them was ‘force of nature’. Sheila wasn’t a half-measures kind of gal. She took issues on with gusto, stuck with them until the end and didn’t let anything stand in the way,” wrote Sean his Facebook post. “Nothing fired her up more than injustice. Nothing moved her to action more than the struggle to create places that help every child be all that they can be. We’ll miss her and her endless energy and unstoppable commitment.” There were more than 200 comments made about Sean’s post. TDSB Toronto-Danforth Trustee Jennifer Story said in her’s that Cary-Meagher

was indeed a “force of nature” at the board. “Her commitment, creativity and drive to make schools more effective, caring and equitable for families was unparalleled. She had a massive impact on the TDSB and by extension the province,” said Story. Cary-Meagher decided not to run for trustee in the 2018 municipal election, telling Beach Metro Community News in a story that she and the board were no longer “in sync”. “Sheila was in it for the right reason – to give every child the best possible chance in life, particularly those who had so much stacked against them. Her work on model schools helped many educators in poor neighborhoods get the resources that helped close some of the gaps,” commented Janet Davis, who was Ward 31 Beaches-East York Councillor from 2003 to 2018. “She was funny, sometimes irreverent and often pushed the boundaries. She locked horns in the boardroom and had no time for ‘the beancounters’ at Queen’s Park. But she remained committed throughout her long career to the families and commu-

nity she served,” said Davis. Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher was a trustee with Cary-Meagher from 2000 to 2003, and also worked with her on the East End Parents Network. “She loved being a trustee and was devoted to the families and kids,” said Fletcher. “She had no time for silly bureaucracy and she let people know that. She would take no nonsense and always stood up for the families, and that would sometimes get her in trouble with school officials.” Fletcher said Cary-Meagher fought hard to have playgrounds at local schools replaced after the TDSB tore a number of them down in the early 2000s. Cary-Meagher also played a leading role in fighting the city’s proposed closures of a number of pools in local schools over a decade ago. “Anyone who swims in a school pool should know they have Sheila Cary-Meagher to thank for that,” said Fletcher. Replying to the Facebook comments about his mother, Sean said he had been sharing messages sent to his mother while she was in palliative care. “Thank you to all the folks who sent notes, both now and last week about Sheila,” he wrote. “She read every one of the ones that came before she died and turned to me one afternoon with her trademark wry smile and said, ‘I’ve been reading these notes about Sheila, she must be some broad.’ Her community was an inspiration to her and your kindness in her last days made them easier for her and us.” The family said there will be a celebration of CaryMeagher’s life when COVID restrictions are lifted. “We’ll celebrate her when we can all gather again, and do it up right,” wrote Sean.

A three-alarm fire took place late on the night of Saturday, Jan. 22, at this auto repair business on the southwest corner of Danforth Road and Warden Avenue.

There are 15,970 dryer related fires annually!

Two people injured in three-alarm fire at auto repair shop ONE PERSON was taken to hospital for treatment after a fire at a southwest Scarborough auto repair business late on the night of Saturday, Jan. 22. Firefighters were called to the auto shop on the southwest corner of Warden Avenue and Danforth Road at 10:58 p.m. When emergency crews

arrived two people were located with injuries. One was taken to hospital for treatment and the other was attended to at the scene. Flames could be seen from more than a block away and thick smoke covered the area. The three-alarm fire required more than 14 fire vehicles at the scene.

An adjacent house was also damaged due to its exposure to the auto shop fire, Toronto Fire Services said. On Sunday morning the interior garages of the auto shop were burned out and at least two badly burned vehicles could be seen in the parking lot. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Failure to clean the dryer vents is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires. More home clothes dryer fires occur in the fall and winter months, peaking in January.

Shooting part of ‘disturbing increase’ in gun violence ‘Fundraiser’ from Page 1 The 13-year-old accused cannot be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Supt. Lauren Pogue, of Detective Operations, also spoke at Friday’s press conference and said the shooting was another in a “disturbing increase in gun violence” over the past few months in the city. “I wanted to take the time this morning to support our homicide investigators and to speak directly to the traumatic impact of this case. Any loss of life is traumatic, not just for the victims’ loved ones, but for our communities as well. In this case, the involvement of two teen boys is almost unimaginable, and as a community we should be devastated,” said Pogue. “It is a sad and unfortunate example of the proliferation of handguns in our city. Our firearms investigators will be relentless in their efforts to determine the origin of these firearms involved. However, it has been our ex-

perience that the majority of firearms we are seizing in the city have come from across the border, the United States. We are doing what we can to stem this tide. And we hope to share more with you about our efforts in the future, but it is only one part of this disturbing increase in gun violence we’ve seen over the past several months.” Pogue said the gun violence is victimizing communities and young people. ““We cannot continue to have … young boys really victimized by this gun violence,” she said. “We are also proactively deploying resources to the communities most affected. We’re providing visible police presence, reassurance and building relationships with residents.” Toronto-Danforth MP Julie Dabrusin told Beach Metro Community News she was “heartbroken and angry about the loss of this young person in our community” and the fact that a 13-yearold had been charged in connection with the shooting.

A Liberal MP, she said getting handguns off the streets is a political priority for her and a position she has long been pushing. “I support a ban on the personal possession of handguns and I continue to advocate for this ban,” said Dabrusin. “We have taken a lot of important measures towards greater gun control including a ban on military style assault weapons, lifetime background checks, and stronger rules around the sale of firearms.” Choe asked anyone with information on Wednesday night’s shooting to contact the homicide squad at 416-808-7400. In My Opinion

Where is the outrage over gun murders in Toronto? Alan Shackleton Beach Metro News Editor LAST WEDNESDAY night a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed in the underground parking garage of an apartment building in East York. That is a monstrous tragedy for this city. What is even more shocking and horrifying is that the person charged in this fatal shooting is a 13-year-old boy. We don’t know the circumstances that led to these two boys being in the parking garage late on a freezing cold Jan. 19 night, and what does it matter. The result was 15-year-old Jordon Carter had died and a 13-year-old boy was charged

with second-degree murder. One life ended and another one ruined. Two families mourning and in shock. “Both families in this case are understandably devastated. We are supporting them in the best way that we can,” said Det. Sgt. Rob Choe of the Toronto Police homicide squad at a press conference on Friday morning announcing the arrest and identifying Carter. Since the accused is under the age of 18, no further information that might identify him can be released under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. But knowing the details of what brought these two boys together that night isn’t going to change anything. The why of this does not matter so much as the how. And the how was guns.

Police found two handguns and ammunition in the garage. At this point, police do not know if the guns were illegally brought into Canada, stolen from a legal owner or obtained some other way. Yet somehow those guns were there, and one of them was used to take the life of Jordon Carter. We should be outraged that a 13-year-old had access to a handgun and was able to use it to kill a 15-year-old. But are we? This story has already faded from the consciousness of the city. By Saturday it was being forgotten with the news of a 19-year-old man, his name was Malachi Elijah Bainbridge, shot and killed in a North York parking lot earlier that morning. A couple hours later, another shooting took place in the same general area of Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue in which a man

suffered life-threatening injuries As I write this column on Sunday afternoon, there have been nine murders in Toronto. By my count, eight of them involved shootings. And January isn’t even over yet! But are people angry about that? Apparently not. There were a lot of people out on downtown streets last weekend protesting against COVID-19 vaccination mandates and rules. They seemed angry. I also saw a flood of near constant outrage on social media last week about the lack of snow removal on streets, sidewalks, bike lanes (and even outdoor ice rinks). Does that reflect the priorities of most Torontonians? It must, or else there would be enormous pressure on politicians at all levels to actually do something about guns in our city.

Winter storms bad enough to clog streets, sidewalks and bike lanes for days are usually a once-ayear occurrence at most in Toronto. People being shot to death in this city is averaging twice a week so far in 2022. But what is complained about more? “It is a sad and unfortunate example of the proliferation of handguns in our city,” said Supt. Lauren Pogue at last Friday’s press conference. “Our firearms investigators will be relentless in their efforts to determine the origin of these firearms involved. However, it has been our experience that the majority of firearms we are seizing in the city have come from across the border, the United States. We are doing what we can to stem this tide.” I wish Toronto police success with that, but will it be enough? Do we even care?

Letters to the Editor

Heritage designation for Dawes Road grist mill is not the right call for area Re: ‘Heritage designation sought for former grist and flour mill on Dawes Road,” Beach Metro Community News, Jan. 11. Even though I am a bona fide history buff, with a two decades long record of preserving East Toronto heritage, I object to designating, and freezing the 10 Dawes Rd. Grist Mill as a heritage property. Rather, given its strategic proximity next to the Danforth GO-Main Subway station, the site’s potential for offering new, truly creative social housing should not be foreclosed on. Once GO is finally electrified the

sleeper Danforth GO station will turn into East Toronto’s central transit hub given that it will be only a two-stop, 10-minute ride away from downtown Union Station. Proof of this are the mushrooming private developed highrises already popping up from Main Street all the way to east of Dawes Road. With all this new assessment income stream can Toronto Council not afford the bucks to rehabilitate this entire site – and still reflect its history? Can city planners not envisage an imaginative green housing and

community hub replacing what has been a neglected eyesore for over a century? Can the historically key element of the mill, its headhouse, not also be preserved, and be exhibited much more prominently, in such a publicly financed creative showcase redevelopment? I’m sure this can find resonance among the broader community and become the focus for an architectural contest -- while promoting creative input from the public. Hans Modlich

Choosing to be unvaccinated should come with financial cost Re: ‘Frustrations grow amid closures, restrictions,” Beach Metro Community News, Jan. 11. Looking at the headlines in the Beach Metro Community News edition of Jan. 11, may I add the word ‘sad’. Returning from my local salon just now, usually bustling and active with 12 or more staff and customers, today there was one. I believe this virus could have been beaten down earlier, if more people had been vaccinated. Whether that’s the fault of governments or fools who refused to be vaccinated is irrelevant. The question is how to move

forward. Like Quebec, I think we should charge a tax for every service performed for unvaccinated people. Hit people where it hurts; in their wallet. Furthermore, unvaccinated people should not hold jobs in public places. Infringement of their human rights you say? My own human rights have been trampled into the ground by unvaccinated people. Let’s get serious, and get tough rules and consequences for unvaccinated people. Sincerely and with some anger. Winona Gallop Lavier

It’s filled with a vast array of items made from beautiful textiles such as pillows and headbands, handcrafted soaps, prints and original works by various artists, and of course her own jewelry pieces. Born in Montreal, Lily and her family moved to Toronto when she was in elementary school. She grew up in Regent Park and was surrounded by a diverse community. “Growing up in a multicultural environment was what I knew. I don’t know that I ever really felt being treated negatively because I’m Chinese. I’m sure there were probably kids that said mean things to me, but it just didn’t stick,” Lily shared when I asked her if she had ever felt like an outsider. Lily said that she hasn’t felt like a victim of aggressive racism more than once or twice in her memory, but the idea of how we see ourselves and the stereotypes that we are subjected to flowed in and out of our

He asked me, ‘Can you please send me some Asians, because they are such good workers,’” she said. Some may read that as a seemingly favourable comment and not understand how it could be racist, but let me assure you it most certainly is. The ‘model minority’ is a stereotype that not only strips a person of their individuality but also reduces them to a compliant asset rather than a dynamic human being. These types of remarks are harmful and discriminatory, and by their very nature they are divisive. My conversation with Lily, helped uncover a valuable topic. In my recent column we discussed the importance of listening, but without proper communication it’s hard to create spaces in which others will want to share. “I would love to sit in a room with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and have them be able to openly communicate and ask what they are most curious about with no judgement,” said Lily. “I think a lot of people are fearful to ask questions.” I completely understand what Lily is driving at. The more understanding we have about each other’s lives, experiences, and feelings the more we can create communities that are based in partnerships of mutual

support. “I feel like there’s a lot of fear around being able to ask questions or learn more about someone’s race,” said Lily. “I think people feel like, ‘How will I know if you’re someone who will be angry and tell me to look it up myself or someone who will say, it’s OK you can ask me.’” We have often heard the rhetoric: “You can’t say anything anymore” or “I’m afraid I’ll say the wrong thing so it’s better to say nothing at all.” This is simply not a true statement, but there are certainly key factors to keep in mind when broaching these sensitive matters. Language and how we use it are so important, equally so are the who, what, when, where and why. This sounds like common sense and yet time and again we find ourselves in awkward situations. When curious to learn more about someone’s experience, try to remember three things: Intention – what is your intention for asking this question? Care – be sensitive and careful about how you ask a question. Listen – whatever answer you get it’s now your responsibility to actually listen, even if you don’t like the feedback. And respect the idea if they say you should pick up a book and educate yourself. Not every person of colour wants to take on the emotional burden of explaining or sharing their experience. Though it may feel harsh and hurt your

well-intentioned ego, please try to remember many of their experiences surrounding their race might be uncomfortable or worse. We all carry pain and it’s hard to know when that pain comes out. This doesn’t mean we stop trying to learn. If your intention is genuine, it just means we try to learn in a different way. Lily grew up in a household with minimal communication and experienced how it could breathe too much space between people. On The Wild Side

January begins with photographer’s ‘luck’ Ann Brokelman is an avid birder and nature photographer naturephotosbyann.blogspot.ca

S

ome days I go out and feel like I am living in a children’s storybook. On my street alone I regularly see deer, foxes, coyotes, squirrels, owls, hawks, a plethora of pretty birds, and more. I’d like to share two short stories today; while they may seem to rely on luck, I honestly believe that if you took up a hobby like birding/nature photography, you’d have similar experiences in no time. Now, part of my ‘luck’ comes from my willingness to go out in all weather. In the second week of January, when it was -15 in the city, I convinced myself to head out to a local park in Toronto. Thanks to the cold, I thought it was a perfect day for a walk as, with fewer people around, the animals would be more active. I drove into the park, got out of my car, grabbed my camera, and looked up to see a young buck walking out of the forest! I couldn’t believe it. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and this beautiful animal was taking a leisurely stroll barely 15 metres away from me. I stood behind my car, not wanting to move and give him any reason to leave and watched him walk over to where squirrels had gathered near some large rocks. I had a hunch something amazing was about to happen, so I set my camera and held my breath. Sure enough, the buck walked over to see what the squirrels were picking at, and, for a brief second, they had a face-toface moment. I only had time for one shot before the squirrel took off, but my luck held, and I

was able to capture this special scene. My second story involves one of my feathered friends. This time of year, I love going to the local lakes and ponds to see if the water is frozen. Anyway, I was on my way to inspect Lake Ontario and to see if there were any of the usual swans, ducks, or gulls that didn’t migrate further south. I wasn’t disappointed to see that, while there was ice in the area, there was an open inlet that was already full of waterfowl. I then noticed cool looking icicles hanging from a tree that was leaning over the water. I thought it might be a great shot, but there was no way to know if any of the birds would cooperate. I sat on a rock and watched and waited. It’s always a toss up in this situation to see what will hold out longer: My slowly freezing rear end, or my stubbornness to get the picture. Fortunately, I had mallards, buffleheads, and a single green-winged teal to keep me distracted from the cold. I was on the verge of moving on when a family of swans landed in the open water in front of me. While the swans were busy dunking their heads in the shallow water, looking for food, a juvenile trumpeter headed right for the spot for which I’d been hoping. He moved through the branches and, though he carefully avoided the icicles, he chose to break several off with his beak and knock them into the water. Did he have a reason for this? Was it just for fun? I have no idea, but it reminded me of my own kids, and now grandkids, and how they all seem to love to knock down icicles wherever they find them. What a great start to 2022! -- With files from Erik Brokelman

PHOTOS: ANN BROKELMAN

So far it has been a great start to the year for wildlife photographer and columnist Ann Brokelman. She was able to capture these two great photos of a deer and a squirrel meeeting face to face, and a swan breaking icicles.

After his wife passed, John Leslie Harrison moved to the Beaches Lions Centennial Apartments on Norway Avenue. He would regularly walk up to three kilometres a day, often with a camera in tow. The photograph above was taken in the late 1980s, and is looking north from Lake Shore Boulevard East to the old Greenwood Raceway grandstand. In the photo from the present (below), the new street you see in the middle of the frame is called Winners Circle. Thank you Laura Harrison for sharing your dad’s photos with our readers. Keep your true path in your heart ‘Art’ from Page 7 learned to be self-sufficient. At 18 years old Lily moved out and started to forge a path of her own. “I think I’ve always had street smarts. I had to figure things out on my own,” said Lily. “I went from retail to recruitment and worked my way up. I was really fortunate, and my bosses gave me more and more responsibilities and opportunities.” Eventually Lily’s final corporate job before becoming a full-time entrepreneur was working for Toronto Community Housing as a Program Supervisor. The last department she worked for

was the commercial sector, overseeing the operations and maintenance of retail and restaurant properties. “When the pandemic hit all the art shows and markets were cancelled and I felt so bad for all the artists. Even though I was among them, I still had my full-time job. I had always thought I’d like to have a store one day, but the reality didn’t seem possible,” said Lily. “But then one day I was driving and a ‘For Lease’ sign caught my eye, so I called the number and asked what the rent was. They offered to let me see the place and so I thought, ‘What the hell’ and I did. I

went home and crunched the numbers and suddenly it started to seem doable. I still had my full-time job, so it didn’t seem as risky. I would not have done it otherwise. Seventeen days later I had the keys in my hands.” Through her store, Lily has opened a space for artist to share their talents and showcase their methods of self-expression. As a community we benefit from the beauty and diversity Lily and each of her artists has brought to us. “I’m working to bring in more work from Black and Indigenous artists,” she told me. Lily’s hard work paid off

Sales Representative

and she was able to quit her corporate job. Now she is ready for more and shared that another location is in the works. Creativity and efficiency come naturally to Lily. She has successfully opened a store that she had barely allowed herself to dream about. It goes to show that often times your true path isn’t the one you had on paper, it’s the one you kept in your heart.

Arts & Entertainment

Winter Stations 2022 installations for Woodbine Beach selected THE SIX art installations that will make up the Winter Stations 2022 exhibit along Woodbine Beach have been selected. They are ENTER-FACE (from Turkey); Wildlife-guard Chair (from Canada and France); THE HIVE (from Canada); S’winter Station (Ryerson University); Introspection (University of Toronto); and One Canada (University of Guelph). Winter Stations began in 2015 as a way to highlight the beauty of the Eastern Beaches and make them a destination point for outdoor art installations during the winter. The artworks are set up at the lifeguard stations along Woodbine Beach, and each year an international competition receives entries connected to that year’s Winter Stations’ theme. In 2021, winners had been selected for the art installations but they were not put up over the winter on the beach due to COVID-19. However, some of them were later displayed along Queen Street East in the summer thanks to The Beach BIA. Given all that the world has gone through over the past two years, the theme for Winter Stations 2022 was Resilience. “Designers were asked to cel-

ebrate the ability of people to withstand and push through challenging and unprecedented times,” said the Winter Stations press release announcing the 2022 winners. “This year, artists were asked to not only reflect on all the ways people have had to be resilient, but the ways people have channeled this resilience, be it through communities, movements, support networks and more.” This year’s Winter Stations will take place along Woodbine Beach starting on the Family Day long weekend in February and continuing through until the end of March. That is, of course, “pending any unforeseen COVID restrictions”. The founder of Winter Stations, Roland Rom Colthoff, said he was “overjoyed” that the art installations would be back on Woodbine Beach this year. “It’s great to be able to offer Torontonians a distanced and safe event to look forward to this winter. Whether it’s your first time seeing the exhibits, or you’re returning for another year, we hope you enjoy the installations that artists and designers from around the world worked so hard to create,” he said in the press release. With Resilience as the theme,

Among the six winners selected for the Winter Stations 2022 art installations along Woodbine Beach this year are ENTER-FACE (above left) and One Canada (above right). this year’s Winter Stations also recognizes the impact of the pandemic on East Toronto and particularly shelter residents. One of the installations has been dedicated to the women and gender diverse individuals who lived at the YWCA’s temporary emergency shelter on Queen Street East in the Beach for most of last year and a good part of 2020. “After reviewing the winning

stations, residents and staff (at the YWCA emergency shelter) were drawn to THE HIVE, because of its vibrant colours and how it represents resilience and hope in building community in unprecedented times,” said the press release. For 2022, Winter Stations will also be expanding its footprint beyond Toronto. The installation Wildlife-guard Chair will debut in early February at Hamilton’s Win-

terfest on Pier 8, before heading east to Woodbine Beach for Family Day. Winter Stations was first launched by RAW Design, Ferris + Associates and Curio in 2015. Over the years it has become immensely popular with both local residents and visitors to the Beach. Sponsors for Winter Stations 2022 are The Beach BIA, Minto Continued on Page 17

Resilience was theme for Winter Stations 2022 art installations ‘Winter’ from Page 16 Communities, Sali Tabacchi Branding and Design, Meevo Digital, RioCan, Demirov, Bara Group, Urban Capital and Waterfront Shores Partners, consisting of Cityzen Group, Tercot Communities, Greybrook Realty and the City of Hamilton. Here is more information on the six winning installations for Winter Stations 2022: ENTER-FACE by MELT (Cemre Onerturk and Ege Cakir, Turkey) “The times of pandemic have changed our habits in multi-scalar aspects, but it especially affected the way of how we perceive the world outside of us. More explicitly, it shifted our communication with people, interaction with the environment and the perception of our experiences by means of a single surface: the digital screen. Via offering the isolated a new version of coexistence, these screens not only made overcoming this challenging period possible but also became indissociable parts of lives as mobile ‘interfaces’.” Wildlife-guard Station (Mickael Minghetti, with the guidance of Andres Jimenez Monge, France and Canada) “Inspired by the northern cardinal bird – a specie present all-year round in Ashbridge’s Bay Park – the station seeks to engage the visitors with Toronto’s wildlife. The diversity of species taking refuge in the dense urban environment is both remarkable to observe, and critical to preserve.” THE HIVE (Kathleen Dogantzis and Will Cuthbert, Canada) “The resilience witnessed among communities in the face of challenging and unprecedented times is paralleled among the honey bee. Honey bee colonies are primary composed of worker bees whose greatest measure of resilience is maintaining hive tem-

perature throughout the cold winter months. This is achieved by adapting worker behaviour to use energy from stored honey to generate body heat within a tight hive cluster. The challenge of keeping the hive warm is met by a colony level response – much like the collaborative community level response that is mounted in the face of adversity.” S’winter Station (Evan Fernandes, Kelvin Hoang, Alexandra Winslow, Justin Lieberman, and Ariel Weiss, led by Associate Professor Vincent Hui, Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science) “The forces of nature are relentless. Like the falling snow of the sky and the shifting sands of the beach, the pavilion embraces local wind, snow, and sun conditions. Following these directions of force, the pavilion’s wings embody movement by harnessing snow and mitigating strong winds. Beach towels have been formed into dynamic concrete panels with varying openings. These panels control the amount of light and snow allowed to enter, while also creating unique views outwards. Together, the panels and wings protect users and encourage them to engage with their surroundings.” Introspection (Christopher Hardy, Tomasz Weinberger, Clement Sung, Jason Wu, Jacob Henriquez, Christopher Law, Anthony Mattacchione, George Wang, Maggie MacPhie and Zoey Chao, led by Associate Professor Fiona Lim Tung, University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design) “In keeping with this year’s theme of resilience, we chose to base our design on the emotions felt throughout the past two years’ worth of quarantine and isolation. Playing with the idea of reflection, we utilize mirrored walls to cast the visitors as the sub-

Winter Stations 2022 art installations S’winter (top); Introspection (above left); THE HIVE (above centre); and Wildlife-guard Station (above right). jects of our bright red pavilion, titled Introspection. While the trellis roof allows the sun to illuminate the interior and its visitors, the red lifeguard tower stands unyielding in the centre of the pavilion, reminding us of the inherent stability within us.” One Canada (Alex Feenstra, Megan Haralovich, Zhengyang Hua, Noah Tran, Haley White and Connor Winrow, led by Assistant Professor Afshin Ashari, University of Guelph’s School of Environmental Design and Rural Development) “The Indigenous Peoples in Canada are an inspirational example of resilience due to their ability to withstand adversity and persevere through generations of oppressive colonial policies. Historic injustices persist, including the effects of cultural geno-

cide from the Residential sSchool system of Canada. Here we symbolize bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples through gathering. Accomplished through the support of the seven grandfather teachings, represented by the seven rings of the installation, that originated with the Anishnabae Peoples, passed down through generations that ensures the survival of all Indigenous Peoples: Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Truth. Orange represents the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, and the reality that the support of non-Indigenous Peoples, as Indigenous Peoples assert rights to self-determination, will strengthen relations and begin to redress the historic wrongs.” For more information on Winter Stations 2022, please go to www.winterstations.com

The Cube’s robotics team to take part in provincial championships BEACH SCHOOL, The Cube, is heading to the First Lego League (FLL) East provincial championships on Feb. 13 to 15. The FLL robotics championship competition theme for this year is Cargo Connect. The Cube’s team, who call themselves Super Safety Stars from The Cube, were tasked with proposing an innovative solution to solve the movement of cargo within our cities and around the world. The Super Safety Stars chose to focus their solution on addressing safety within the cargo industry. Hundreds of accidents are recorded in air cargo operations each year; many accidents result from human error or carelessness in the work field. The Super Safety Stars team solved this problem by developing an efficient, low-cost intelligent safety system that reduces the number of injuries for airport cargo workers. Super Safety Star’s system uses microcontrollers to alert workers of possible collisions by emitting a visual alarm and a sound alarm; these microcontrollers are linked to a dashboard-enabled web system. The goal is for workers to get assistance immediately after a Mayday call, alert others of possible danger, and avoid collisions with machinery in the fast-paced cargo warehouse environment. Members of the The Cube’s Super Safety Stars team who will be taking part in next month’s provincial championships are Franky G, Maiya C, Adam N., Jasmine K., Luca B. and Aryan L. A STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school, more information on The Cube can be found at www.thecubeschool.ca
