TRIBE MARIANAS: BUILDING A BRAND ONE LIKE AT A TIME By Lee Ann Jastillana Social Media Platforms Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram have become powerful marketing tools. In today’s digital age, a strong online presence is crucial to the success of a business. Tribe Marianas, a local lifestyle and clothing brand, built its following and loyal customer base solely through social media marketing. Today, the brand continues to utilize digital marketing to interact with customers, advertise and expand the business’s following. In 2016, Tribe Marianas opened with a small shop in Garapan. Since then, the brand has collaborated with other companies like Toyota, Budweiser, Docomo Pacific and T Galleria by DFS where an exclusive Tribe Marianas line is

sold. The company also actively participates in community events and organizations like the Marianas March Against Cancer, Electric Island Festival and the Million Dollar Scholars program. Rob Travilla, co-founder of Tribe Marianas and current creative director, says the business would not have seen the success it has without social media. “We were those kids that didn’t have the money or the budget to print out 5,000 mail advertisements or get a big billboard,” Travilla says. “Social media has changed the game so drastically that people in corporate America can spend thousands of dollars on it but still won’t pump out the following that a 700-square-foot shop like Tribe Marianas does.” The Tribe marketing team allocates equal amounts of effort across social media platforms, although they are very active on Instagram where they answer customer messages and post stories frequently. Every social media outlet serves a different purpose for the brand. Twitter is used as fun, goofy medium to interact with customers, Instagram and Facebook are used to answer business queries and upload product updates and pictures and YouTube is used to artistically showcase products through video.

Travilla and his team spend as much time on social media as they can, recognizing that trends and interactions can change with every hit of the refresh button. The Tribe team works to respond to every customer message within 30 to 45 minutes because they feel this personal connection is highly valued by their consumers. Social media, Travilla says, now serves as someone’s business card. Like a portfolio, it requires a lot of work to become successful online. “That’s what a lot of companies are laughing about — when we call being on our phones all day work. Some people don’t like the sound of that,” he says. “Some businesses today don’t allow you to be on your phone during work, but here at Tribe, if you don’t pop out your phone every 10 minutes, it isn’t the right place for you.” Travilla says almost everything in their store revolves around technology — from their POS signal to internet messaging. For him, the importance of technology and reaching out to consumers is something corporate companies fail to see. All Tribe posts are meticulously screened by the social media and online marketing team which consist of four people. Instagram uploads are carefully thought out and placed to follow a theme. They also pay special attention to peak posting times and hashtags. “We try our best to make sure our posts are what we intend to post,” Travilla says. Travilla believes there is no right or wrong way to use social media, but he does have a couple of tips for businesses that utilize these platforms. His tips include proportioning photos before posting; utilizing captions to personalize the business account; connecting with consumers and responding to comments; and most importantly, spacing out and using relevant hashtags. The Tribe team will continue to use social media as a crucial tool for the business and adapt to the platform trends and updates as they come. “Social media has always been our special herb or spice,” Travilla says. “In order to keep cooking up the food, we need to make sure we stay on top of these ingredients.”

PASSION AND STYLE MAKE UP ON SAIPAN
By Lee Ann Jastillana Photos courtsey of Ceyla Kaufer, Grace Veleña and Merci Hocog Young women on Saipan continue to express interest in makeup application and products. Local makeup enthusiasts Grace Veleña (@styledtogracexo), Celya Kaufer (@muaxcel) and Meriden Hocog (@journeywithmeri_) are among the many to start makeup Instagram accounts to showcase their love for the craft. What inspired you to start a makeup IG? Veleña: There are so many reasons why I wanted to start a makeup IG, but the number one reason was to showcase my style and form of art through doing makeup on myself and clients.
Celya Kaufer
Kaufer: I’ve always been interested in makeup but never thought that I was any good at it. I think that as I was practicing and applying makeup on myself, others began to take notice. I decided to make an Instagram page to document it. My love for makeup is what drove me to start a makeup Instagram, but the people who admire what I was doing definitely motivate me to keep doing it. Hocog: I never really intended on making a makeup IG before. But when I put up selfies, people complimented them and asked about the products or brands I used. I thought, “Why not share them through a makeup account?” It would also be a good portfolio for me to see the growth in my makeup skills.
Grace Veleña
Describe your makeup style in three words. Veleña: Fun, creative and bold. Kaufer: Unique, colorful and creative. Hocog: Simple, bold and fun. What’s your favorite look that you’ve done? Veleña: A glitter cut crease look that I’ve done on myself. I love doing a cut crease on my eye shape because it makes my eyes appear larger, and as a makeup artist, you can just never go wrong with it. You can make it look really sharp or blended for a softer look.

Kaufer: The “decades” collaboration I did with a few other makeup gurus. I love the challenge of following a certain theme, and I had a lot of fun putting together an 80’s inspired look because it’s colorful, creative and fun. Hocog: My favorite look that I’ve done would be the sunset eye look. It compliments my skin tone and it really gives off the island feel. Where is the makeup scene headed in Saipan? Veleña: The makeup scene is definitely headed towards something big on Saipan! So many individuals are finding, love, comfort and self-love in makeup. I think it’s really beautiful. I also think the makeup scene is expanding quickly here and it’s a comforting feeling to know there are so much people that support the movement.
Meri Hocog
Kaufer: Makeup is really at its peak on island. It’s becoming the “in thing” and I think that Saipan is really building a sense of confidence and comfort with the basics of makeup. Hopefully, in the coming years, more creative makeup styles will be celebrated. Hocog: Over the years, the makeup trend has been changing, and it still does — from thin to thick brows, from one shadow popped onto the eyes to multiple shades blended together. Women and teenage girls on Saipan see these changes and they learn to keep up. For some, it helps them to better express themselves. For others, it helps to enhance our features.
Grace Veleña
Where is your go-to place for purchasing makeup? Veleña: Pena House and Benefit and MAC at DFS. If I purchase online, I go to @missknicknacks’s IG shop and Colourpop. Kaufer: Pena House. Hocog: T-Galleria DFS or Pena House.

Repeat on the top. Fill the rest in with powder and gel to give the brows depth. 4. With the left over product on the brush, softly fill in the inner part of the brow to create an ombre effect for a natural look. 5. Clean and define the bottom part of the brow with makeup base or concealer. Blend thoroughly.
Pro-tip: Start on the eyes before applying face makeup in case of mistakes or fallout. Eyes 1. Prime the eyes to prevent the eyeshadow from creasing. Set with any powder or nude shade you prefer. 2. With a brush, apply a nude, apricot color all over the crease and lid. 3. Highlight the brow bone with powder. 4. Line the upper lash line with a brown eyeshadow for a sultry look.
