2023 AT THE BEACON

Greenock Arts Guild Ltd celebrates 10 years of the Beacon Arts Centre

It’s a joy to introduce you to the Beacon’s latest season of events – five months of top-class entertainment, from world-famous musicians via raucous comedy to uplifting and provocative drama.

I’m particularly delighted to welcome two of Scotland’s National Performing Arts companies: the Royal Scottish National Orchestra brings a celebration of all things Strauss, with a Viennese Gala and the National Theatre of Scotland premieres its much-anticipated re-telling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped

Weel-kent faces Barbara Rafferty and Paul Riley look back over their lives on stage and screen and there’s an affectionate tribute to Francie and Josie from Liam Dolan and Johnny Mac.

Talking of tributes, we’ll have fantastic shows belting out the music of Frankie Valli, Tina Turner, David Bowie, Roy Orbison, Meat Loaf, The Beatles, stars of American Country music and the Sun Records label. If you’re looking for the real thing, Scottish icon Lulu and 80s pop sensation Paul Young put in personal appearances, and there are gigs from Ashara, The Jeremiahs, Blue Rose Code and The Tannahill Weavers – as well as the Runrig musical The Stamping Ground and the Albany Stage School’s production of School of Rock

Families should also look out for the Dreamcoat Stars performing all the bestknown numbers from Joseph and much more, and the brilliantly madcap The Good, The Bad and the Poultry

There are thought-provoking dramas on Piper Alpha and the Climate Emergency, migration, loss and rage and growing up gay in provincial France. Poverty Safari author Darren McGarvey is sure to have you reassessing life in contemporary Britain.

We also have comedy from Milton Jones and Friends and Janey Godley, the wonderfully intimate Beacon Jazz Club continues (also, don’t miss The World of the Gods, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s astonishing show with the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers) and we introduce the Classical Music Concert Series, featuring Scottish star guitarist Sean Shibe, accordionist Ryan Corbett and Bach aficionado John Butt.

Our year-round art exhibitions continue, as do our Take Part classes and activities, and of course, even if you’re not coming along to a show, there’s always the Beacon Café and Bar, with those awesome riverside views.

As the Beacon continues to light up lives in Inverclyde, we look forward to seeing you very soon.

Pauline Kane | Director

Greenock Arts Guild Ltd celebrates 10 years of the Beacon Arts Centre

LIGHTING UP LIVES IN INVERCLYDE

www.beaconartscentre.co.uk

This year Beacon Arts Centre celebrates a decade in our wonderful waterfront venue! We are incredibly pleased to mark the milestone with a year-long programme of theatre, comedy and music throughout 2023. We want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past 10 years, and to all those who have graced our stage and worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

The Beacon opened its doors to this iconic building in 2013, providing a new home for the Greenock Arts Guild which had been serving the local community since 1946. Our mission has been – and remains – making sure the arts are available and accessible to everyone, regardless of circumstance. In addition to our staged performances, every year we offer thousands of people the opportunity to take part in transformational community projects and events.

Of course, we love and hugely appreciate when you buy tickets for our shows and events, or choose to eat and drink at Café Beacon. But there are other ways you can support our work. This can either be through a one-off gift or on a more regular basis. Every penny we receive will help us continue lighting up lives across Inverclyde.

We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our loyal supporters, funders and donors. It is thanks to them that we are able to fulfil our mission to make a lasting impact by giving as many people as possible the opportunity to engage with the arts in enjoyable and meaningful ways.

Scotland meets Jamaica in Canada! The brainchild of Scottish-Canadian Jason Wilson (Wilson & Swarbrick, Pee Wee Ellis), Ashara (meaning Good Fortune) presents a joyful blend of Scottish folk, global roots and reggae. Wilson is joined by legendary JamaicanCanadian guitarist Carl Harvey (Toots and the Maytals) and a rotating cast of award-winning Scottish trad musicians, including fiddle player Jack Smedley, piper Ali Hutton and accordionist John Somerville, as well as Wilson’s own eclectic Canadian band.

Scottish-based Jamaican songstress Subrina Ward appears as a special guest.

With a repertoire consisting of old and new folk songs from Ireland, Scotland and England, originality is to the forefront for The Jeremiahs, each member bringing their own truly original sound. Coupled with Joe's lilting singing are newly composed melodies played by Niamh, Brian and Julien with a fiery passion. The band took part in the opening concert of Celtic Connections in January 2022 and completed a highly successful tour of England in February. ‘One of the freshest bands in Irish traditional music’ Sean Laffey, Irish Music

My past year has been like a giant Wordle game that has swept the nation, during which I went from ‘cancel to cancer’ in 6 weeks. All my own doing, but now it’s time to laugh, live and celebrate after dealing with this dreadful disease. Never one for the conventional path in life, I am still NOT DEAD YET.

From stories of heart-warming love and outpourings of support to the occasional daily messages hoping I might die soon – because I’m a woman who answered back – there will be voiceovers and anecdotes straight from the woman who wouldn’t die or shut up.

Come join me!

Same Moon in the Same World is an ambitious new collaboration between British musicians Alex Hitchcock (saxophone) and Ant Law (guitar). Inspiring the album is the idea that while we may be in separate places geographically, we have shared truths: musical language, human experience, emotions. From our unique vantage points, we are all staring at the same moon. The common experience of the pandemic has emphasised the importance of human connection, and it is in this spirit that the music was composed and recorded. The artists on this album were brought together by the very conditions that were keeping people apart.

A Wee Journey is a choreographed musical journey about migration, a timely and relevant piece that fuses dance, music and performance to explore belonging, connection, community and home. Combining choreography by Farah Saleh with live music and composition by Oğuz Kaplangi, this collaborative piece foregrounds the lived experience of the artists.

Unbecoming

A solo work by Anna Porubcansky, Unbecoming is a performance about loss and rage, told by a woman and a mother. Rage, at all we become when we don’t feel like we have a choice. Loss, of all we haven’t become. And how we unbecome.

Presented by Company of Wolves using traditional song, soundscape, myth and movement, Unbecoming is a dreamworld: a rich and sublime space where image, memory, desire and fear all reside. Watch a woman unravel, layer upon layer stripped away, to reveal a human, unmasked. How much of what we are is what we’ve chosen to be?

The Albany Stage School presents School of Rock, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star, is down on his luck. Kicked out of the band and threatened with eviction, he intercepts a phone call for his flatmate Ned Schneebly.

To make a few extra bucks he poses as Ned, a supply teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mindblowing rock band. He just needs to do this away from the prying eyes of the school’s uptight Principal, Rosalie Mullins …

Chloe is a Scottish Indian Singer Songwriter from Inverclyde. Many of her songs draw on her time as a Navigational Officer in the Merchant Navy, inspired by the natural world experienced at sea. Her music offers an intriguing insight into a new tradition of maritime folk. Chloe’s voice, coupled with her harp playing, make a haunting combination perfectly suited to the reflective nature of her material. Of mixed Indian and Welsh heritage, and crossing boundaries in her career at sea, Chloe is keen to explore breaking down cultural and gender barriers through the language of music.

‘Music with thoughtful song writing embellished by her voice and superb harp playing.’

Following a five-star debut review in The Scotsman, Surrogate Productions present Who Killed My Father. Growing up gay in a small town in France, Édouard endured the violence and homophobia of his alcoholic, right-wing father, a factory worker. In 2000 his father suffered an accident which left him bed-bound and on morphine for the pain. Now, Édouard confronts his father, uncovering startling connections between political decisions and his father’s broken body. Who Killed My Father is an intimate declaration of love from son to father and a defiant call for social justice.

It’s time to hang on to what we got and celebrate the iconic sounds of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Come out tonight as we take you to a place where the moon shines bright and we dance the night away, taking you back in time. During the ’60s and ’70s No1 hits including Sherry, December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night), Walk Like a Man, Rag Doll and Big Girls Don’t Cry helped propel the Four Seasons and Frankie Valli to superstardom. Oh what a night it will be! It’s the time, it’s the place, it’s the motion!

Pibroch Too close to the sun

How does it feel to find oneself on a ‘burning platform’ with a pressing need for change but limited options? Pibroch is a multimedia production which explores parallels between the Climate Emergency and the 1988 Piper Alpha Disaster.

Created by Aberdeenshire-based writer and artist John Bolland, Pibroch uses words, live music and striking visual imagery to represent the personal and social experiences of Piper Alpha survivors and their relationship to the challenges each of us face in a warming world. John’s words are complemented by Fraser Fifield’s live musical accompaniment.

Commissioned by Imaginate | For ages 7+ Inspired by the Greek legend of Icarus, this is the story of a girl weighed down by the responsibility of the environmental crisis. She dreams of the boy Icarus and begins to work out her escape. This is the story of a girl who’s learning to fly. At one with the wind, she soars up, up and away…

Too Close To The Sun is about the power of imagination and the sheer determination that lets you fly when forces all around want to pull you down. The award-winning Barrowland Ballet use intricate choreography, spoken word and humour to tell this evocative new story.

When together-forever couple Euan and Annie return home, they’re seeking a fresh start for their teenage daughter. But there’s a heatwave in the Highlands and they soon find themselves lost in this once-familiar place, now filled with more tourists than residents.

Filled with rousing new arrangements of Runrig’s best-loved songs, written by Morna Young to a concept by Alan B McLeod, The Stamping Ground is a story of love, life and coming home that thrilled critics and had audiences on their feet at its 2022 premiere in Inverness.
