Rewriting the Rules of Retirement

• During World War II, the Lay-Z-Boy company had to stop producing recliners because of the war effort. Instead, they used their production facility to mass produce (we hope much more comfortable) seats for tanks and other military vehicles.

• Champagne was originally a holy wine.

• The only people guaranteed to get Super Bowl rings, regardless of a game’s outcome, are the referees, though their rings aren’t nearly as large or valuable as that of the players.

• In the 1880s, a railroad signalman named James Edwin Wide taught a South African baboon to perform his job by recognizing the whistles that indicated a train was about to change tracks. Dubbed “Signalman Jack,” the animal performed his duties so well that not only was he formally hired at a salary of 20 cents per day and half a bottle of beer per week, he carried on for nine years until his death from tuberculosis in 1890.

• Trees were not around for 90% of Earth’s history.

• Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury’s overbite resulted from four extra teeth in his upper jaw. He refused to have them removed, however, for fear the surgery would affect his voice and vocal range.

• In the 2015 film “Jurassic World,” Chris Pratt’s character carries a stainless Marlin 1895 — the only firearm on Marlin’s website that’s rated for a T-Rex.

• Two churches in Vrontados, Greece, have a particularly unconventional way of marking the Easter holiday: They fire rockets at each other! While they used to use cannons, those were outlawed. The tradition has been carried out for at least four centuries.

BUSINESSSpotlight

Jennifer Coates Business Spotlight writer

My journey as a spotlight writer began ten years ago in the backyard of a longtime friend. There, a conversation with the former spotlight author led to an opportunity that would introduce me to a whole world. That day, that conversation, launched me on a journey of discovery, knowledge, enduring friendships, and wonder. Let me explain.

The highly accomplished philanthropist Melinda Gates defined the word “wonder” in her recent book “The Moment of Lift”. She writes: “Wonder has two meanings for me. It can mean awe and it can mean curiosity.”

As I have interviewed the owners of local businesses throughout our whole region, I have been filled with wonder – the kind that fills you with awe and the kind that feeds your curiosity.

“Awe” because I have felt the passion of each business owner for what they do. “Curiosity” because I could never learn ENOUGH about each business, even the ones that seemed at first glance to have the least appeal.

One example of this is an assignment I had to interview the owner of a shop that sold propane. The shop’s office

was shabby and worn-out, reminiscent of some longforgotten roadside gas station on a deserted highway. The owner of this 50 year-old business was equally as “rough around the edges”, but I knew he had a softer side when I saw the photos of his grandchildren plastered on the station’s walls. Like with every interview, I paused and took in the whole scene, gleaning what I could from the cues around me.

At first, I could only think of two questions to ask him about propane, a topic that I immediately thought boring, at best. Once I got talking to this business owner, however, that impression changed immediately. He became animated and excited talking about how his family got in the business over half a century ago and about the many uses and benefits of propane. Our conversation/ interview lasted nearly an hour as I was caught up in his enthusiasm. What I came away from here was that sense of wonder that Melinda Gates described – awe for this man’s pure passion, and a curiosity about something that I had once known little about.

This one interview has stuck

in my mind over the many years that I have been writing for Beacon Communications.

It is emblematic of how virtually every story has begun and ended for me. I have learned how much these businessmen and women love what they do, no matter what it seems like at face value. Most have invested their every penny into their product or service. Most have sacrificed everything to be successful, and many have survived natural disasters and even pandemics. Yet many have also failed, and I have felt a deep pang of sorrow when I drive by their shuttered stores or offices, knowing that what was lost was so much more than a business, but rather a dream, sometimes a lifetime of dreams.

What will keep the dreams and goals of these many diverse business owners alive is your continued patronage. Shop at your local stores. Support your local, family-run restaurants, salons, service stations, retail stores and propane dealerships! They need you to stay alive. We need them to thrive.

It has been the greatest privilege of my life to tell the stories of these friends and neighbors. I hope you will get to know them as I have, and to be filled with wonder at all they do and all they are.

KOVELS ANTIQUES AND COLLECTING

Coal Scuttles

A fireplace takes a lot of watching and “feeding” if it is going to keep a room warm. Today’s wood-burning fireplaces use logs cut to the right size to fit into the fireplace. A metal basket holds the logs behind andirons, and a fire screen blocks the ashes and cinders from spilling out into the room. The poker is a tool used to turn or move burning logs. The shovel removes the ashes when the fire is put out. But what is the use of the big box with a lid that is on the floor next to the fireplace?

The box is called a coal scuttle. They were first used in the 18th century to hold lumps of coal for the fire. By 1850, coal had been replaced by logs, but the box is still called a coal scuttle. The box could also be used to collect ashes when the fire was out.

This coal scuttle is made of oak with brass trim. It was made about 1900 in the shape of an earlier example with four round feet and a metal lining. It sold for $125 at a DuMouchelles auction in Detroit.

Q:WhenI was little, before I had my ears pierced, my mother let me play dress-up with vintage clip-on earrings that originally belonged to her mother and aunt. Were clip-on earrings more popular than pierced? When did ear piercing become more common?

A:Clip-on earrings were a 20th century invention. The first earrings were for pierced ears. Post and stud earrings appeared in the mid1800s, but by the end of the century, people saw piercings as barbaric. Earrings with screw backs were invented in 1894 as an alternative to piercing. Clip-on earrings were patented in the 1930s. Pierced ears became fashionable again in the 1960s. As the styles changed, new owners sometimes put new backings on older style earrings, changing from clip-on to pierced and vice versa.

Health Improvement Through Weight Loss Surgery Treating so much more than

the number on the scale

A new year, a new beginning. With the arrival of 2023, many of us use this annual marker to stop and think about where we have been, and where we’re going. It’s a chance to reflect on our wellbeing and to make plans to improve the quality of our lives by improving our health.

For many, weight loss is a health improvement goal. It’s a formidable challenge, because our body’s weight regulation mechanisms are so complex. The dangers of elevated body weight often sneak into life slowly. The number on the scale may be just the first sign of serious health issues on the horizon.

First, let’s talk about the dangers of obesity. The metabolic dysfunction that occurs in obesity often leads to something we call “metabolic syndrome.” This is a cluster of conditions increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and other serious chronic health conditions.

Obesity is not a disease of a number on a scale, it is a disease of our body’s metabolism. Metabolism is the set of life-sustaining chemical reactions that regulate our body’s energy consumption, energy expenditure, and energy storage.

So, what can you do to combat

Staying Healthy

obesity and start living a healthier life?

Decades of studies have shown that the most effective and longest lasting treatment option is weight loss surgery – aka: bariatric surgery or metabolic surgery.

While all these names refer to the same set of surgical procedures, I feel that the term “metabolic surgery” best encompasses the true purpose and potential of what surgical weight loss offers to patients.

More than just a procedure to lower weight; metabolic surgery is truly about lowering the serious risks of chronic medical conditions and premature death that occur with obesity. On average, patients with

obesity die several years earlier than patients without obesity.

Surgical weight loss has also been shown to improve severe medical conditions including, but not limited to, high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, infertility, depression, degenerative joint disease, cancer, and more.

The complexity of obesity and metabolic syndrome treatment deserves the support of a multidisciplinary team. At the Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Care New England, patients have a comprehensive center for beginning their surgical weight loss journey– starting with checking your body mass index (BMI), informational webinar, and an individualized consultation with one of our accredited bariatric surgeons.

To get started on your weight-loss surgery journey visit: https://www. carenewengland.org/bariatric/

Ensuring Body Balance to Avoid Neck and Back Injury “The Opposite Hand and Foot Rule”

Ensuring body balance when performing activities, especially in standing, requires coupling of the opposite hand and foot: “The Opposite Hand and Foot Rule.”

During an activity that involves reaching, the leading action hand is coupled with the leading opposite foot. By first placing the opposite foot of the leading hand in position, the base of support is established to allow for a balanced and safe movement as the leading hand is brought forward.

By placing the opposite foot forward the pelvis and lower trunk is fixed in position so that the opposite hand and upper trunk can best perform the action allowing for minimall strain and maximal stability on the spine to “Avoid Neck and Back Injury.”

One obvious example is: Opening a Door with the right hand. First place the left foot forward as the right hand reaches to push or grasp the door handle.

Another example is picking up a piece of paper from the floor with the right hand. First place the left foot forward close to the piece of paper. Reach forward with the right hand as you bend at the hips and knees, keeping your spine straight (ears kept in-line with the shoulders and hips).

By best example is shoveling. When holding the shovel with the left hand closest to the spade (lower end of the shovel) the right foot is kept forward as the leading

foot. This keeps your lower pelvis and base of your spine properly positioned and stabilized as the opposite upper trunk and hand leans forward performing the shovel action. The same holds true for sweeping. The lower hand on the broomstick is matched with the opposite foot forward.

“Proper Body Mechanics or body balance is learned and practiced and necessary for maximal work efficiency with minimal biomechanical strain. Keeping a wide base of support, maintaining the spine is neutral (straight) and using the opposite hand and foot rule ensures maximum neck and back stability during the reaching activity. Upper and lower trunk counter rotation is encouraged during the action which maintains the spinal joints, ligaments and

muscles in best alignment ensuring work efficiency with minimal spine strain.

Unfortunately, unless you prepare yourself before the movement or activity (use the opposite hand and foot rule and maintaining neutral spine), you are most likely to perform the action incorrectly and more likely to strain your neck and back.

This is so because our motor development process involves the coordination and integration of individual movement reflexes that must be integrated (balanced) at the spinal cord and brain level. During strenuous or repetitive activities of daily living these reflexive movements dominate our actions making us susceptible to physical inefficiently and neck and back strain. Therefore understanding and implementing the “opposite hand and foot rule” along with a prepared wide base of support (opposite foot forward) while maintaining a neutral (straight) spine (ears in line with the shoulders and hips) will ensure safety and minimize neck and back injury.

Facts about women’s heart health

If asked to name the No. 1 killer of women, many people might be excused for providing an incorrect answer. Various issues affect women’s health, and some issues garner more attention than others. But nothing kills more women each year than cardiovascular disease, which the American Heart Association notes causes one in three deaths of women each year.

That cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women each year is not the only surprising fact in regard to women and heart health. The following are some additional interesting facts, courtesy of the American Heart Association and other sources.

• The 2019 Global Burden of Disease study from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimated there are 275 million women around the world with cardiovascular disease.

• Awareness among women regarding the threat posed by heart disease has decreased dramatically in recent years. In 2020, a special report from the AHA indicated that, in 2009, 65 percent of women were aware that heart disease is their leading cause of death. By 2019, that figure had dropped to 44 percent.

• Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of new moms. The AHA notes that could be linked to a host of variables, including obesity. Data from a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that examined pregnancies in 48 states and the District of Columbia found that pre-pregnancy obesity increased by 8 percent between 2011 and 2015. During that same period, severe pre-pregnancy obesity increased by 14 percent. Obesity is considered a significant risk factor for heart disease.

• The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada reports that the No. 1 cause of premature death in women in Canada is heart disease and stroke.

• More than half of all high blood pressure deaths are in women. The AHA reports that nearly 52 percent of deaths caused by hypertension (high blood pressure) occur in women.

• Nearly 58 percent of Black women have hypertension. That’s the highest percentage among women of any race or ethnicity.

• Despite the significant percentage of global heart disease deaths affecting women, a 2021 study published in the journal The Lancet found that cardiovascular disease in women is understudied, under-recognized, underdiagnosed, and undertreated.

• The Canadian Women’s Heart Health Centre reports that menopause before the age of 45 is linked to a 50 percent higher risk of heart disease.

• The World Health Organization reports that one-third of all ischaemic heart disease diagnoses across the globe are attributable to high cholesterol. According to the CWHHC, one in two women have elevated cholesterol.

• A 2017 study of more than 19,000 people who had cardiac events found that only 39 percent of women received CPR from bystanders in public compared to 45 percent of men. Researchers linked that disparity to fears of being accused of inappropriate touching, potential lawsuits and concerns that administering CPR to women could cause physical injury.

American adults’ hearts are much older than they should be

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average adult in the United States has a heart that is seven years older than it should be. “Heart age” is a metric used by the CDC to determine if an individual is at greater risk for heart disease than they should be at any given point during their adults lives. Factors such as body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, whether or not a person smokes or has smoked in the past, and if that person has diabetes all help to determine heart age. The CDC indicates that millions of people in their 40s and 50s who live in the United States have high blood pressure and more than 35 million U.S. adults are current smokers. Those variables increase heart age, making individuals more vulnerable to heart disease even in middle-age. Individuals interested in getting an estimate of their heart age can visit the Heart Foundation at heartfoundation.org.au/heartage-calculator. Adults also are urged to speak with their physicians about their risk for heart disease and what they can do to lower that risk.

Cats Can Hide Illness Symptoms, So Be Aware

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat Sisko became very unaffectionate a few days ago. He hid under the bed or crouched in the corner of the living room and refused to cuddle. Then I noticed when he sat in the litter box that he meowed as if he was in distress. I called the veterinarian, and they had me bring him right in. Turns out that Sisko had a urinary tract infection! He’s doing fine now, but I wanted to tell my story so that other readers will know that a sudden behavior change in their cat could be a medical problem. — Kurt W., Parsippany, New Jersey

DEAR KURT: Thank you for sharing! You did absolutely the right thing: You noticed a sudden change in your cat’s behavior, kept a closer eye on his activities and litter habits, and contacted the vet’s office to share your observations and get advice.

Cats are very secretive about their health. It’s an instinctive behavior that helped their ancestors hide from predators. So it is common for owners not to notice when their cat is experiencing pain, such as a sore tooth or an illness like a urinary tract infection. While the occasional hairball episode isn’t a cause for concern, there are some symptoms that should prompt a call to the vet for an appointment.

— Your cat acts withdrawn, sits hunched over, refuses to play or be petted.

— Eating or drinking habits change.

— Litter box behavior changes: meowing, missing the box or noticeable diarrhea.

— Grooming problems develop, or they have clumpy fur or irritated skin.

— Physical symptoms: eye or ear discharge, strange breathing, unusual vomiting, lethargy or drooling.

Breathe Easier

• Keep your HVAC air ducts clean.

Indoor air gets pulled into the sys- tem and contaminants can build up in the ductwork. Getting your air ducts properly cleaned can improve the ventila- tion throughout your home and lessen the number of pollutants in the air you breathe.

The Problem

These items—and many others—pro- duce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which, the EPA says, can irritate skin, eyes,

noses and throats and cause headaches, nausea and dizziness. Extended exposure, the EPA warns, can even cause asthma, liver, kidney and nervous system damage.

Some Answers

Fortunately, you can reduce your exposure. Here’s how:

• Improve your venti- lation.

• Store products con- taining VOCs out- doors.

• Seal surfaces containing compounds.dangerous

Be sure the duct cleaning company is a member of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NA- DCA). They pledge to a Code of Conduct and clean according to strict standards.

A Unique Approach to Funding Education

(NAPSI)‚ Here’s a clever secondary education idea you may be glad you learned: When graduates walk across the stage at a Texas State Technical College (TSTC) graduation ceremony, they do more than get an associate degree or certificate of completion. They get money for their school. Once they start working, the college gets paid by the Texas Legislature.

TSTC was the first higher education institution in the United States, and the only one in Texas, to adapt to using a returned-value funding model. This model calculates the economic value stemming from five years‚ worth of graduate wages. This value is multiplied by a funding rate equaling the amount of state funding in the state’s two-year budget cycle.

It all comes down to accountability and earned results.

It is a sea change from what normal funding formulas are, said Joe Arnold, TSTC’s deputy vice chancellor for Government Relations.

How It Works

The funding formula concept was created in 2011 during the 82nd Texas Legislature, which recommended that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

work with TSTC to recognize graduates‚ job placements and earnings. This is quite different from the traditional funding method using student enrollment.

The formula set a fiveyear period for graduates‚ unemployment insurance wage records to be tracked by the Texas Workforce Commission and used to calculate funding. Graduates working out of state are not counted in the formula.

The funding formula aligns the college’s outcomes with the needs of the constituents it serves, said Jonathan Hoekstra, TSTC’s executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer. To maximize its funding opportunities, the college must mobilize the entire campus community to shape student experiences that maximize their future employability. This includes focusing programs on those that are in the highest demand amongst the employers of Texas.

As TSTC Chancellor and CEO Mike Reeser told the National Summit for Higher Education, some of the benefits of this funding model include the state only paying when results are achieved and the college’s operational efficiency becoming even more critical to

sustain.

The funding plan starts off in the base budgets of the state House of Representatives and Senate and during the legislative session and eventually it ends up in the final budget signed by the governor.

TSTC uses program-vitality scorecards to monitor program success. Technical programs that have not met graduate placement and salary standards have been phased out. The college also uses internal scorecards to monitor year-toyear progress.

All of the college’s technical programs have advisory boards made up of industry representatives who give guidance on curricula using what employers need from workers and how work is being done in the field. TSTC strives to offer the latest technology for students to use to become job-ready upon graduation.

Meeting The State’s Needs

Consider this: The importance of plumbers was felt in winter 2021 as a major winter freeze affected all corners of Texas. As pipes froze and burst at apartments, homes and businesses, plumbers were in high demand for weeks after the winter weather to

make costly repairs.

So TSTC and the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) opened testing facilities for prospective plumbers. They can accommodate written and practical exams.

These new testing centers will double and eventually triple TSBPE’s ability to test applicants wishing to obtain a plumbing license, Frank S. Denton, TSBPE board chair. This could not have been done without the cooperation and assistance of TSTC.

Money-Back Guarantee Students in select programs in Diesel Equipment Technology, Electrical Lineworker and Management Technology, Electrical Power and Controls, Industrial Systems, Instrumentation Technology, Precision Machining Technology, Process Operations Technology, Robotics and Industrial Controls Technology, and Welding Technology who do not get jobs in their chosen field within six months of graduation are eligible for a refund of the tuition paid out of pocket. Lending agencies who handle student loans will be reimbursed.

Technology in Our Lives

5G Home Internet: Powerful Enough For Your Home?

(NAPSI)‚ 5G Home Internet is making waves when it comes to connectivity. And while the technology behind 5G is a great choice when it comes to mobile data and serving remote areas with limited connectivity, the same might not be said for powering most home Internet needs.

What is 5G Home Internet?

Simply put, 5G networks are mobile networks. Because 5G Home Internet relies on the same cell towers as 5G mobile devices, they are essentially competing for capacity. When many mobile users utilize the 5G network at once, the 5G Home Internet users must wait in line behind them for con-

nectivity. Think of it as a congested interstate highway, with everyone headed for the same exit.

Additionally, signal obstructions such as weather, buildings, and trees have to be taken into account. Such interferences can lead to unwanted speed fluctuations and lag during video calls or while gaming ‚ what insiders refer to as latency.

Essentially, this means wireless 5G networks are often less reliable and less secure than wired networks.

According to Speedtest Intelligence results from Ookla, the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, 5G Home Internet struggles to

consistently maintain broadband speeds over 25 Mbps during peak times.

This has led to online forums filling up with users lamenting about not being able to keep up with binge-worthy streaming shows, and homes with multiple users competing for quality connections for online work, school or play.

The truth is, 5G can be great for those without options such as cable broadband or other fiber-based services. Otherwise, it results in slower speeds and lag as it shares limited space with mobile user traffic.

Chalazions Continue to Develop in Both Eyelids

DEAR DR. ROACH: Are oral antibiotics ever prescribed to treat chalazions, in addition to eye drops and ointment? I have had two this year for seemingly no reason. They were treated with tobramycin eye drops, ointment and warm compresses. The first one didn’t resolve with those meds and was excised surgically. That eyelid then became infected without a chalazion and was treated with a second round of antibiotic drops. It remains a bit puffy and pinkish in color, which I chalked up to the new normal appearance.

Now, a chalazion has developed in the other eyelid. I don’t wear eye makeup and use an eyelid cleanser recommended by my ophthalmologist. I am an otherwise healthy 76-year-old woman. Could there be a systemic bacterial or viral infection causing chalazions to keep developing? — M.W.

ANSWER: The terms for different types of eyelid lesions can be a bit confusing. Most people are familiar with a stye, which is a localized inflammation of the upper or lower eyelid, most commonly caused by an infection of one of the glands of the external eye, usually by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.

A stye is also called a hordeolum. An external hordeolum is in the eyelash follicle or the lid margin, whereas an internal hordeolum is inflammation in the meibomian glands, the ones that secrete mucous to help keep the eyes lubricated.

Makeup can block these glands and predispose someone to hordeola. Hordeola are treated with warm compresses and sometimes by an eye specialist, with a combination of antibiotic drops and topical steroids. Drainage by an oph-

A chalazion is not an infection. It’s a usually painless rubbery mass in the eyelid. A chalazion can be a complication of a hordeolum, since the glands are blocked by inflammation, leading to thickened secretions from the gland. Since it’s not an infection, neither oral nor topical eye antibiotics are useful. These also usually get better with warm compresses over weeks to months. People with recurrent chalazia should be considered for biopsy, since they can turn out to be tumors in rare circumstances.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old female with numerous health issues, including three types of epilepsy. About two years ago, I experienced watching my pillow turn into bubbles and ants marching across my bedroom ceiling. They remained there and did not join me in bed, thankfully. After some time, they went away — until this week. I am awake and alert when I see them, and it always happens at night. Due to a staphyloma, I only have vision in one eye. I was also born with cataracts and had those, along with age-related ones, removed at age 69 and 70. I am wondering if these visions I am experiencing could be yet another form of epilepsy. — S.G.

ANSWER: Although epilepsy can certainly cause visual hallucinations, they usually last only seconds and are not normally as complex as what you describe. Rather, I think this is more likely to be Charles Bonnet syndrome, which is associated with visual loss (that does not have to be complete). These visions are usually colored and may stay still or move, and hallucinations of animals and people are well-described. Moving the eyes toward and away from the hallucinations rapidly may suppress them. There are available medications to make them go away, which some people want and others do not.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu.

JOHN E. HUSZER

Father of the Wickford Art Festival

If you’re familiar with Rhode Island, you’re probably familiar with the Wickford Art Festival. But are you familiar with the festival’s unofficial founder, John E. Huszer? As you know I am passionate about art and artists, and with a recent collection we’ve received at Bruneau and Co, I cannot pass up the opportunity to talk about this Rhode Island artist with such a crucial role in Rhode Island art history! After studying at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League of New York, John Huszer (19121983) moved to Rhode Island to live, teach, and create. He was known as an independent and reclusive artist, spending years dividing his time between a tiny island in Wickford Harbor and teaching from downtown Wickford. A man of small means, Huszer painted on newsprint because it was readily available; If you’ve got a sharp eye, you can even spot some vintage Rhode Island newspapers

in the background of his work! In fact, the whole reason the Wickford Art Festival came to be is because he took to selling his paintings on the streets of Wickford in the 1950’s. Little did he know his business technique would become be wildly popular!

John’s selling success inspired other local artists to bring their work to the street, and in 1962 the Wickford Art Association officially established the Wickford Art Festival,

which draws dozens of artists and hundreds of attendees to Wilson Park in Wickford every year. While he was a private man and didn’t intend it, John Huszer thus became known as the “Father” of the annual event. Can you believe (July 8-9) 2023 will mark the festival’s 60th anniversary!? If you’ve never been and you love art, you should definitely check it out.

John E. Huszer’s art came to us at the auction house through his family’s estate, and I’ve had an opportunity to view the bulk of his work. The paintings are bright and bold and vary in subject matter from scenic landscapes to nudes with plenty of variety to suit different tastes; Most include a “John E. Huszer Estate” stamp on the verso. We had a few cross the block in our last Fine Art Auction and the most popular piece depicted a snarling tiger crouching over a partially devoured woman – so when I say there is a John Huszer artwork to suit every taste, I’m not kidding! If you look carefully, you might recognize some Rhode Island landscapes since he was fond of painting the beauty surrounding him in our state!

Don’t worry if you missed out on this important Rhode Island artist’s work at auction, we’ve got more coming. If you’re interested in learning more, don’t hesitate to reach out at 401.533.9980!

You know those inexpensive pasta sauces? While they’re indispensable for making quick spaghetti dinners, these sauces are useful for so much more than pasta. Here are several ideas that think outside the pasta box. Not a noodle in sight.

What You’ll Need:

3 to 5 pounds chuck roast

1/4 cup flour

1 teaspoon each: salt, pepper, garlic powder

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)

3 carrots, peeled and chopped (about 1 cup)

Reduce heat to medium-low. Add the onions, carrots and celery and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and continue cooking for another 2 minutes. Then add the wine, scraping all the lovely, browned bits off the bottom of the pan, and cook until it reduces a little, about 5 minutes. Add the pasta sauce and canned tomato and stir to combine. Then return the roast to the pot and cover. Turn the heat down to low and let it simmer gently for 2 to 3 hours, until fork tender.

Easy Creamy Tomato Soup — In a saucepan, lightly saute 1/2 cup fresh basil (minced) in 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil. Add one (24-ounce) can of pasta sauce, 2 cups water and heat through. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup heavy cream. Yields 4 servings. This soup told me it’s lonely without its best friend. So please make a grilled cheese sandwich, too.

3 celery ribs, chopped (about 1 cup)

4 - 6 cloves of garlic, minced

1 cup red wine

1 (24 ounce) can pasta sauce

1 (14.5 ounce) can Italian style diced tomatoes

Mashed potatoes or polenta for serving, optional

Chopped parsley, optional garnish

When finished cooking, transfer the meat to a chopping board and let rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. If the sauce isn’t thick enough for your liking, you can continue boiling over medium-high heat, uncovered, until it reduces enough to reach your desired thickness. Taste and adjust seasoning. Cut the roast into gorgeous big chunks and return to the sauce to serve.

Some of these recipes don’t use the entire can of sauce. You can easily freeze extra sauce for future fun recipes by placing the sauce in ice cube trays or muffin tins, then freeze and store in plastic freezer bags.

Tomato Butter — In a food processor or mixing bowl with a hand mixer, blend 1 stick (1/2 cup) softened butter, 1/4 cup pasta sauce and 1/4 cup chopped parsley or basil. Use plastic wrap to roll the compound butter into a log; refrigerate. Slather on fresh baked breads, fish, chicken, cooked vegetables or rice.

HOLLYWOOD — A 2018 Pennsylvania jury found Bill Cosby guilty on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, for drugging and sexually violating a woman in his Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, home in 2004. He received a three-year sentence, but in 2021, he was released from prison after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his conviction.

On the heels of his release, Cosby announced plans to start touring again in late 2023. His promoter claims, “He has hundreds of thousands of supporters asking for him to do a show.” Recently, five women, including two from “The Cosby Show,” filed sexual assault lawsuits against Cosby using a new New York law, the Adult Survivors Act, which lets victims sue abusers even after the statute of limitations expires. Cosby believes, “When I come out of this, I’ll be able to perform and be the Bill Cosby my audience knows me to be.”

Still the question persists ... in view of his predatory crimes, will people find anything he says funny? ***

Here’s another one for the history books. Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 classic “Romeo and Juliet” starred thenunknowns Leonard Whiting (16) and Olivia Hussey (15), who became overnight sensations after the success of the film. The film won Oscars for cinematography and costume design, and the two young actors both won Golden Globe Awards for Most Promising Newcomers.

Of the two, Hussey had a more important career. In 1971, she wed Dean Martin’s son Dean Paul Martin, of the pop group Dino, Desi & Billy. I photographed their Las Vegas wedding with the entire Martin clan. In 2015, Hussey and Whiting reunited for the British romantic psychological thriller “Social Suicide.” The film went pretty much unnoticed.

Flash forward to December 2022, when Whiting and Hussey filed a lawsuit through the Los Angeles county

Superior Court, accusing Paramount Pictures (who released “Romeo and Juliet”) of sexually exploiting them and distributing nude images of adolescent children. Director Zeffirelli died in 2019 and cannot answer for his actions. Apparently, they claim Zeffirelli assured them that there would be no nudity. They were fitted with flesh-colored undergarments, but he convinced them to use body makeup instead. They claim mental anguish and emotional distress has followed them in the 55 years since the film’s release.
