Safety tips ahead of your Memorial Day barbecue
Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer for millions of people across the country. Backyard barbecues are a staple of Memorial Day weekend, and such informal gatherings contribute much to the laid back vibe of this beloved three-day weekend.
Backyard barbecues may be all about food and fun, but it’s important that hosts take measures to ensure such soirees are safe as well. By employing the following measures, hosts can ensure their Memorial Day barbecues are safe for all in attendance.
• Check propane tanks for leaks prior to using the grill. Memorial Day may be the first time many people use their grill since the previous summer or fall. The NFPA recommends propane grill users check their tanks for leaks prior to using the grill for the first time. This inspection is simple. Apply a light solution of soap and water to the hose. The NFPA notes a propane leak will release bubbles. The smell test also can reveal a leak, as a strong odor of gas can indicate a leak. In such instances, close the tank valve and turn off the grill. If the leak stops, have the grill serviced by a professional. If the leak persists, call the fire department. The NFPA urges hosts who detect an odor of gas while cooking to get away from the grill immediately and call the fire department. Do not move the grill in such instances.
• Man the grill at all times. An unattended grill poses a significant safety hazard. Whether you’re using a propane grill, a charcoal grill, a smoker, or a hybrid, make sure an adult is keeping an eye on the grill at all times.
• Purchase long-handled cooking tools. The American Red Cross notes that long-handled cooking tools are designed to keep chefs safe. Such tools ensure cooks’ hands and arms do not have to be directly over flames, which can periodically flare up and pose a safety hazard.
• Ensure children are supervised when swimming. The grill is not the only safety threat that may be present at Memorial Day barbecues. Hosts who will open their pools or provide inflatable pools for children should make sure kids are supervised when in or around the water at all times. Before allowing kids in a

* Want to pump up a dying fire? Never use lighter fluid. Even if the coals look really gray, they could be hot on the inside. The stream of fluid CAN catch fire. It’s too dangerous. Put new briquettes in with the old, and light those up using a long-stick match.
* From charcoal grilling expert Kingsford, here’s a great tip to use when grilling chicken: “When applying a dry rub to chicken pieces, it’s often hard to keep the rub affixed and it’s even more difficult to keep the chicken’s original, golden color. Try painting chicken pieces with yellow mustard prior to applying the rub. Not only will the rub stay in place, your final product will be visually appealing -- without any trace of mustard flavor.”
* When wrapping vegetables in foil packets to grill, make the seams on the sides. This way, the veggie packets can be turned over for even cooking and to avoid burning on one side. You can even label the outside of the foil in permanent marker. It won’t affect the taste of the food.
* To cover a picnic table in windy conditions, choose a fitted bed sheet. An alternative that is kid-friendly is to cover a table entirely with white butcher paper, taped at the seams and secured underneath with strong tape such as duct tape. The kids can busy themselves drawing placemats and decorations for everyone in crayon while the adults do the grilling.

Outdoor plants toxic to household pets
Pets bring many positive changes to households. Pets can make homes more lively, and the companionship of animals can reduce feelings of loneliness while offering additional health benefits to pet owners.
Individuals who are preparing to adopt or purchase pets need to be mindful that they may need to make changes at home to ensure residences are safe places for pets to reside. Much in the way new parents must assess the environs for potential hazards to babies, pet owners should conduct similar inspections. These safety checks should occur both inside and in the yard if pets will be spending time outdoors. Poisonous plants are a potentially hidden hazard prospective pet owners must address before bringing a new pet home.
People generally do not give much thought to the plants they include in their homes and yards beyond the care instructions and how they can add to the aesthetic appeal. Homeowners may know if a plant likes the sun or shade, but they may not realize its potential for toxicity. That’s because adults in particular are not prone to ingesting the plants in their yard that are inedible, unlike curious pets that may sniff and nibble plants when exploring their environments. For those with dogs and cats that will spend time outdoors, it’s best to be aware of these potentially toxic plants, courtesy of the ASPCA, Dr. Buzby’s and Garden Design.
• Autumn crocus: There are various types of crocus plants, but the one most toxic to dogs is autumn crocus. The entire plant is toxic, but the highest concentration of toxic agent is found in the bulbs.
• Sago palm: People in warm climates may enjoy the look
of palm trees on their properties. Despite its tropical and relaxing appearance, the Sago palm is extremely poisonous if ingested by pets, with the seeds being the most toxic part.
• Lily: Lilies are highly toxic to cats in particular. Even grooming pollen off of their fur or drinking water out of a vase where lilies are kept may cause kidney failure.
• Tulips and hyacinth: These early bloomers are beautiful flowers, but each contains a similar alkaloid toxin that is mild to moderately toxic to pets. Again, the highest concentration is found in the bulbs, which dogs or cats may dig up while exploring.
• Aloe vera: This soothing succulent may be part of an arid climate landscape. Aloe contains saponin, a toxin with foaming properties that can harm pets if ingested and cause severe dehydration.
• Begonia: A popular outdoor and houseplant, begonia has decorative flowers and attractive leaves. However, the plant can be toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, particularly the underground tubers.
• Azalea: This flowering shrub produces flowers in many colors, so it’s often present in household landscapes. It’s important to note that azaleas can be toxic to dogs and cats.
• Yew: American, Canadian and Japanese yew may be found around properties. These shrubs produce small red berries with green centers (almost looking like the reverse of a Spanish olive with pimento). Yew is toxic to cats and dogs.
• Dahlia: Dahlia produce flowers in different colors, so they are common in flower beds. However, these plants also are mildly toxic to pets.
Many toxic plants can irritate the gastrointestinal system in pets, potentially resulting in vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy.
Those who suspect a pet has ingested a poisonous plant should contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 or their local veterinarian to learn about how to respond to possible exposure. PE245902

• COLLECTIBLES • CONSIGNMENTS • ESTATES • VINTAGE
Regardless of what you like to invest in, every market is cyclical in that it goes through periods of peaks and valleys. Markets are always changing, and it is our job to monitor them. Of all the collecting trends we have witnessed, one has never changed since practically the beginning of time: People love gold.
While the value has changed drastically over the years, the demand never withers as people just cannot get enough. Whether it is jewelry, coins, or just straight bullion, collectors have always gravitated towards gathering as much as they can when the price is right. Why is that? Because it is almost always a sure-fire investment!
Preparing for the Gold Peak
By Travis Landry Auctioneer & Specialist Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers Cranston, RI
So how can you prepare for the peak to make sure you buy low and sell high? Most importantly, pay attention to current events. Historically, the value of gold tends to rise during election years and when there are political instabilities. This applies both domestically and abroad. Additionally, take into consid-
eration the average growth experienced over time due to manufacturing and technology needs. Another factor to keep an eye on is the stock market; the best growth typically occurs when the stock market is down.
Now, contrary to the last statement, the stock market has been performing extraordinarily well in recent times - but so is gold. Over the past six months gold has risen from $2,000 to $2,390 an ounce. For gold this is a historic high, so what does that mean for the future? It means it is time to pay attention more than ever before!
If you are at home reading this and sitting on a pile of gold, either coins or jewelry, you need to focus. Take an inventory of what you have. While you can’t put a price on sentiment, almost everything is replaceable. Cufflinks and earrings without pairs, outdated hatpins and brooches, a random assortment of gold coins… all that can turn into a quick profit! Unless you are a true collector, do not be scared to sell when the time is right. There is no rush, but if prices start rising another 20% to 30% be ready to pull the trigger. Buy low. Sell high. Repeat. If you use this mentality, in the world of commodities you will be nothing but a winner for you.

Whether you are an avid hunter, a collector, someone who is looking for a firearm for personal protection or just someone who loves the sport of target-shooting, RI Gunworks in Coventry is just what you are looking for.
RI Gunworks is now owned by Scott Marcotte, a lifetime Rhode Islander who also happens to be a volunteer paramedic with the RI State Police SWAT team and a former Emergency Room nurse. Some want to own and know how to safely use a firearm for their own protection. And still others want to improve their target shooting skills – they love the pure sport of it all. RI Gunworks has something for everyone.
One of the most impressive and soughtafter offerings available at RI Gunworks is Cameron St. Onge, the shop’s gunsmith. St. Onge was trained at the renown Pennsylvania Gunsmith
School in Pittsburgh. This highly specialized school offers traditional, modern, and innovative training in firearms repair and customization. With his intense training and ten years of experience under his holster, Cameron is truly an expert gunsmith. He can upgrade your gun, clean it, refinish it, repair it, restore it, and prolong its life. If it has anything to do with guns, he is your
man!
The shop is equipped with state-of-theart equipment where Cameron works his magic. Need a new scope? Need to refinish the checkering on your grandfather’s shotgun? Need to clean out your gun so you get out to the black powder hunting you love? Need to give your upgrade the condition of your gun? Cameron will do his best
for you.
The breadth of choices for firearms at RI Gunworks is broad and diverse. Scott has stocked the shop with the top-of-the-line, highly recognizable brands such as Smith & Wesson, Glock, and Ruger. You will even find consigned firearms here.
Finally, ever aware of the potential dangers of firearms, Scott will
direct you to all the local resources you need to train in the use, upkeep, and storage of your firearms.
