Since its inception in 1983, the program has allowed more than 28,000 students to expand their intercultural understanding, strengthen their leadership skills, and become global citizens. Many participants go on to study at top colleges and universities, and all participants become part of a global network of U.S. Department of State program alumni.

POWER UP Family Mealtimes

Bring loved ones together with protein-packed peanuts

Between juggling work, family, friends and social activities, powering through busy day-to-day schedules requires a lot of energy. Building meals around recipes packed with a plant-based protein such as peanuts or peanut butter can help your family come together to refuel.

In fact, at 7 grams per serving, a nutrient-rich powerhouse like peanuts delivers the most protein of any nut and contains six essential vitamins – vitamin E, folate, riboflavin, thiamin, niacin and vitamin B6 – and seven essential minerals – phosphorus, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, copper and calcium.

As a versatile ingredient that can be enjoyed as a standalone snack or part of a variety of recipes from morning to night, peanuts can take center stage at the family table when it’s time to recharge at the end of long days. Start with an appetizer like Broccoli and Edamame Salad with Peanut Dressing, which can be on the table in 10 minutes, to hold over hunger ahead of a protein-packed main course like Chicken with Peanut Sauce in Lettuce Wraps. Finish off the evening meal with Peanut Butter Cottage Cheese Cheesecake as a better-foryou dessert.

Find more delicious ideas for keeping your family energized at gapeanuts.com.

1 1/2 tablespoons fresh grated ginger

1/2 cup hoisin sauce

1/2 cup water chestnuts, diced

3 green onions (both white and green parts), chopped

2 garlic cloves, grated

1/4 cup cilantro, chopped, for garnish

Peanut Sauce:

3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter

2 teaspoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Chances are no one wants to replicate the side effects of the global pandemic anytime soon. Despite all of the upheaval it brought to so many people’s lives, there was at least one silver lining to the pandemic: a newfound appreciation for backyards and other outdoor living areas. Back in 2021, OnePoll, on behalf of the landscaping company TruGreen, found survey participants reported spending 14 hours outside every week, which marked a three-hour increase than before the pandemic hit.

Outdoor spaces like patios, decks, yards, and even front porches remain popular places for homeowners and their loved ones to congregate. Various studies have shown that those who spend more time outside in nature have lower levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Being outside is strongly associated with improved mental and physical health. Homeowners who want to maximize the potential of their outdoor spaces can look to these ideas to take backyards up a notch or two.

A well-designed yard has one or more dedicated gathering spots, particularly areas that enable comfort underfoot. Homeowners can give consideration to hardscape that enables individuals to spend time outdoors without standing in soggy or buggy situations. Whether they’re traditional decks, platform decks, concrete or paver patios, or areas separated from the lawn with pea gravel or another type of rock, homeowners can make the yard more useable through these spaces.

Grilling, smoking and even making brick oven pizzas outdoors is a major component of backyard entertaining. Outdoor kitchens can increase the convenience of prepping, cooking and serving food outdoors. Grills and other cooking gear can be built into weather-resistant counters and cabinetry.

A pergola or another structure is the perfect way to add privacy to a gathering spot and create more shade and weather protection when Mother Nature does not want to cooperate.

When making backyard improvements, homeowners can incorporate ideas that make the yard more functional during different seasons. For example, a fire pit or outdoor fireplace can be a spot for making summer s’mores or sipping mulled cider in the fall. An enclosed three-season room offers the opportunity to see nature and enjoy it without bearing the full brunt of chilly temperatures.

There are many ways homeowners can enhance the functionality and appeal of their backyards.

What is a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologist?

A Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologist is an OBGYN with subspecialty training in caring for children, adolescents, and young patients with gynecologic concerns. Most OBGYN residencies don’t include comprehensive training in how to care for pediatric adolescent patients. While some of the medicine can be applied, developmentally, patients of every age have different needs. A pediatric and adolescent gynecologist can fill the gap in clinical and surgical care for reproductive health - helping younger patients with the overall goal of providing care that is patient-centered, developmentally appropriate, and educationally focused.

How do I know if I need a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologist?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends the first reproductive health visit between the ages of 13 and 15. The purpose of this visit is to provide preventative care and guidance and to address specific issues. Some of the problem-based visits are for things like:

● Menstrual concerns

● Early puberty

● Late puberty

● Vulvar skin issues

● Contraception

● Congenital anomalies

● Ovarian masses.

Ortho Rhode Island is known for pioneering the latest in orthopedic care, but innovation doesn’t just mean new technology – it also means exploring new ways to make every appointment as comfortable, convenient, and patient-focused as possible. To make the experience at their Providence location at 285 Promenade St. even better, Ortho Rhode Island is updating their office to provide a welcoming, spacious environment for patients and their loved ones.

With 11 new exam rooms, a new x-ray space, and renovated patient check-in and seating areas, Ortho Rhode Island’s new look will make each patient’s road to recovery even friendlier and more efficient. And while these big changes are on the horizon, their fundamental commitment to patients hasn’t shifted. Ortho Rhode Island’s Providence office is still at the same convenient address, with free parking and easy access off Route 95 and Route 10, and still offers the same word-class providers.

The updated space will serve to enhance their ability to meet patients’ needs, allowing more room for comprehensive musculoskeletal treatment, with providers offering surgical and primary spine care, robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement, care for upper and lower extremities, physical and occupational therapy, rheumatology, on-site MRI, and more.

Staying Healthy

What happens when a patient comes in for an appointment?

As part of fellowship training, I gained exposure and experience in treating younger patients, and the way we approach the visit is very different.

The first thing I do, especially for adolescent patients, is let them know they do not need a pelvic exam. This is often not indicated, and their concerns can be addressed appropriately without it. So much about a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology visit is about listening and providing education and reassurance. Many patients also come in with an adult caretaker who also has questions, and it is an opportunity to dispel some of the myths and correct some of the misinformation that exists in reproductive health care.

Gynecologic concerns of young patients can be very sensitive. Patients often share things that they might not

talk about with anyone else. I aim to normalize their concerns and remove some of the mystery surrounding gynecology. It is also important to note that the visit with an adolescent patient can be kept confidential.

Gender-Affirming Care

We offer gender-affirming care which you can read more about at www.womenandinfants.org/blog/ gender-affirming-care. Patients sometimes come in for a visit if they are experiencing gender dysphoria. That’s the feeling of discomfort or distress that might occur in people whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth. COLLECTIBLES

One Famous GoDaikin Robot Collection

If you are a dedicated reader of this article over the past six plus years, then you know the one collectible that gets me excited more than anything else is robots. Not just any robot though, I’m talking about Japanese super robots from the late 1970’s through the 1990’s. Mazinger Z, Raideen, Combattra, Voltes V, Tetsujin 28, etc. these are the robots I love.

You might not remember these names unless you were a dedicated anime fan, but the United States did get a taste of Japanese super robot awesomeness.

“Force Five” was an American adaptation and montage of five different Japanese anime series. The series consisted of 130 episodes pulling content from Gaiking, Danguard Ace, Starvengers, Grandizer, and Spaceketeers. For some it was just another weekend morning cartoon in the background, but for others it was a gateway into an entire universe of heroes, villains, and the coolest toys you could ever imagine. Most kids never experienced here in the United States, but for the small slice of Japanese market toys we did receive here, they created lasting impressions driving a strong collector market today.

There were two attempts to bring Japanese super robots into the United States mainstream toy market; The Shogun Warriors first in 1976 followed

by the GoDaikins in 1982. While Shogun Warriors are remembered for their iconic 24” tall plastic figures known as a “Jumbo Machinder” in Japan, they also consisted of diecast figures just like the GoDaikins six years later. Of the two though, GoDaikins have always been the clear winner for me. So, what sparked me to write about these bad boys again? Earlier this month, I headed to Westford, Massachusetts to consign an original owner collection of GoDaikin robots. How did he find us?

By reading one of my earlier articles on GoDaikins and their value! His love of robots is a bit different than mine; Unlike me, this gentleman did not play with them as a child, he was a scientist drawn to the aesthetics and quality of the toys

and just decided to collect them because he thought they were cool. He amassed a collection so cool in fact that it was showcased in the October 1993 issue of “Toy Collector and Price Guide” magazine! He decided the time had come to part with his beloved robots, which is good news for collectors everywhere else! Keep an eye out for them in our June 15th Pop Culture Auction, and as always, if you’ve got an interesting collection at home, give us a call!

From the time we are young, we are taught a universal principle known as the “Golden Rule” which, simply stated, is “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The Bible teaches another enduring principle, it is: “As I loved you, love one another.”

At the core of each of these messages is love ~ and sharing that love with one another, just as God loves us. This “call to love” is one that resonates within the hallowed halls of West Warwick’s very own Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux. It is seen in the church’s philosophy of inclusion and acceptance. It has always been a part of the teachings and actions of this close-knit community.

Congregants who attend services at “Saint T’s” (as it is affectionately known) will see some things; they see families of all shapes & sizes, they see women in the clergy, they see divorcees participating in all the rituals and blessings their married and single friends enjoy, they hear contemporary music, they see those who extend kindness and love to them. What they won’t see is discrimination, exclusion, judgment, and intolerance.

The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux is a Catholic ocmmunity that functions outside the jurisdiction of Rome. As Father Charles Vohs, the congregation’s Priest explains, this is a faith community whose mission it is to

reclaim those whose experiences have left them feeling marginalized by the traditional Catholic Church.

The church is a haven for those whose abiding faith in the teachings of Jesus Christ have not always been in alignment with the expectations of the church of their

childhoods, leaving them feeling estranged, conflicted, and often unwanted. Father Chuck would say to those who feel left on the fringes of their faith ~ come, you are a Child of God and you are welcome here. Come to be replenished, edified, supported, and uplifted.

chapel’s website best sums up the church’s mission: “The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux welcomes all individuals seeking God’s love; we keep our doors open to every soul seeking to welcome Jesus into their hearts. We invite you to open your heart and allow His grace to penetrate your soul.”
