In heat-proof bowl, mix egg whites, brown sugar, granulated sugar and salt. Put bowl on top of saucepan and warm mixture until it reaches 125 F. Stir continuously and make sure mixture does not touch water.

Carefully remove from heat. Using electric mixer, beat mixture at high speed 8-10 minutes. Transfer meringue into piping bag fitted with star tip. Pipe 12 meringues per baking sheet. Sprinkle turbinado sugar on top of meringues, if desired. Bake 1 hour. Turn off oven and allow meringues to rest inside oven 1 hour. Remove from oven and enjoy.

A healthy lawn thrives with the right amount of water and nutrients. Lawn care is a yearlong process. Even when the sun isn’t very strong and the temperatures are cold, a lawn still needs water. That water requirement multiplies when higher temperatures lead to increased evaporation.

The experts at LawnLove.com, a lawn care and landscaping resource, say grass needs between 1 and 2 inches of water a week. Many times precipitation will take care of all of a lawn’s water needs. But in times of drought or infrequent rain, it’s up to homeowners to provide the water a lawn requires.

If homeowners ask a dozen lawn experts what they recommend in terms of watering, they’re likely to offer 12 different answers. The type of soil and grass affects how frequently a lawn needs to be watered. According to the lawn care company Organo Lawn, it’s better to do a deep watering two or three times a week to promote strong grass roots and maintain a healthy microbial composition in soil than to water the lawn daily, which leads to shallow roots and can wash away nutrients. But it is important for homeowners to recognize when their lawns are not getting ample water. Here are some signs a lawn needs a drink.

• Visible footprints: Elasticity of the grass blades decreases when the lawn is not getting enough water. If you walk on the lawn and footprints do not bounce back in a short amount of time, you likely need to water.

• Gaps between lawn and sidewalk: Lawn Pride says that the soil can shrink in drought conditions. This may be visible where the lawn abuts a driveway, sidewalk or even planting beds. If you walk along the perimeter of a lawn and notice a gap between the grass and hardscape, it is time to water.

• Clumps of grass: It is a sign of drought stress when grass grows in clumps rather than uniformly across a lawn.

• Presence of dollar spot fungus: Grass can become susceptible to this fungus, which also is called ascochyta leaf blight. It only develops in lawns with shallow grass roots caused by improper lawn watering. It’s common in parts of Colorado and elsewhere and is noticeable when damage to the turf begins in the middle of the grass foliage.

• Slow growth: A lawn that doesn’t seem to be growing well, or doesn’t need to be mowed as frequently, likely isn’t getting enough water. Adequate watering can help a lawn develop strong roots and maintain grass health. Homeowners who have questions about their lawns and watering can consult with a landscaper or a lawn care service.

Explaining the concept of “good debt”

Debt is a four-letter word, and in many instances, a high amount of debt is perilous. However, debt isn’t always a black mark on individuals’ financial résumés.

Consumers may have heard the term “good debt” at some point and wondered just why owing money to certain creditors is more desirable than owing to others. The debt help experts at Debt.org note that there’s a simple explanation for this distinction. Debt that increases an individual’s net worth or future value is considered “good debt,” while debts that do not positively affect net worth are considered “bad debt.”

So which types of debt qualify as good debt? The following are three types of debts that generally qualify as good debt.

1. Student loan debt: Student loan debt can be tricky, but it’s generally considered good debt. That’s because education has long been linked to a greater earning potential. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that individuals over 25 who were working full-time and only had a high school diploma had a median weekly income of just under $800. Individuals who had a bachelor’s degree had a median weekly income of more than $1,400. However, it’s important that individuals recognize that certain degrees do more for their earning potential than others. Taking on a high amount of student

loan debt to earn a degree in a historically low-earning field could make it harder to make ends meet down the road. That won’t necessarily make the debt “bad” in the eyes of lenders, but it could force borrowers to wonder if they made the right decision.

2. Mortgage debt: Mortgage debt is perhaps the most undeniable source of good debt. Historically, the appreciation value of real estate has made home ownership a worthwhile goal, even if home buyers have to finance their home purchases with bank loans. Perhaps nothing has more successfully illustrated the value of home ownership in recent years more than the skyrocketing value of real estate during the pandemic. The real estate research firm CoreLogic noted that home prices across the United States increased by 18 percent between July 2020 and July 2021. Individuals who already owned their homes, including those who were a long way from paying off their mortgages, saw their equity rise considerably in that time period, even if they continued to make the same monthly payments they’d been making before the pandemic. Though home prices may never again rise that much in a given year, real estate historically has increased in value on a yearly basis. That certainly qualifies mortgage debt as “good debt.”

3. Business loans: A business loan may carry more risk than a mortgage loan, but it still can turn out to be very good debt

if the business ultimately succeeds. However, that’s a big “if.” Data from the BLS indicates that 65 percent of new businesses fail within a decade of opening. Many small business owners use personal guarantees to secure business loans, meaning

the debt is theirs should the business ultimately fail. But owning a successful business can be a great way to build personal wealth, which is why business loans can be considered good debt. MM21C532

earching “Bunker Hill” in the Newspapers

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the Battle of “Bunker” Hill loss petitions I had been cataloging in my files. I’ve also been doing newspaper searches to add more information by date to that folder and I ended up with 27,000 hits to go through. Two weeks later, I’m just under halfway through them all. Amongst the many articles is some really interesting information.

In many of the obituaries, the soldier is mentioned as “one of the last in the redoubt” and some “the last man in the redoubt”. Here’s an obit from Jedediah Amidon from Ashford, Ct. that has some information that can’t be verified but interesting “Capt. Amidon was in bunker hill Battle, and the last man of the American army who left the ground. Not understanding the order to retreat, he found himself surrounded by the British.

Being a stout, athletic man, he warded off the enemy with the but [sic] of his gun while retreating backward, until he had nearly reached the enclosure, when, stumbling against the dead or wounded, he fell, but soon recovering, he threw himself over the board fence,

“BunkerSearchingHill” in the Newspapers

amid the whistling of the balls of the enemy. After lying a few moments to take a breath, the enemy supposing him slain, he sprang upon his feet and ran to the camp, picking up on his was a silver mounted gun, dropped by an officer who was killed in the retreat.” I would

love to have seen the silver-mounted gun he mentions!

The obituary for Rufus Dewey of Westfield, Ma. mentions: “At the battle of Bunker Hill, he maintained the ground near the rail fence, until he had fired 13 of the 17 cartridges he carried into the field.” If this recollection is correct, it could add to the information that many of the cartridge boxes which were being issued held 17 rounds although the specification was for 19. Examples of cartridge boxes with both hole counts survive.

Some of the articles mention horrible

wounds, including this one.

Mr. Ward “was at the battle of Bunker Hill, and one of the last to leave the entrenchments. When loading his piece, a ball struck his elbow and was extracted from the arm pit.” In April 1820, another Bunker Hill veteran had an interesting reminder of the battle: “Mr. Jonathan Knowlton, of Gloucester, has a ball drop from out his back last week that he had received on his retreat from Bunker Hill battle.”

Other soldiers had ammunition fired during the brutal battle in their body for the rest of their lives. Sylvanus Snow passed away at 97 years old and: “He served several campaigns in the French war; and through nearly the whole of thezwar of the Revolution. He was engaged in 14 different battles, in all of which he was but once wounded, and that was at Bunker Hill, and the ball which he then received, has been carried in his body to the grave.”

I still have thousands of newspaper articles to go through and catalog and I’m sure there will be many more interesting reminiscences to share.

By definition, a “pest” is an insect which harms both crops and plants and is an overall nuisance to humans. While a “pest” can also refer to small animals, anyone who lives in New England knows that the worst kinds of problematic “pests” are the mosquitos, ants, fleas, ticks, beetles, gnats, roaches, flies, spiders and fruit flies that live amongst us in this wet and lush region of the country. Pests are a reality that we must simply live with, right?? Wrong.

According to Stephen Gustafson, (also known as the “Bug Buster”), we don’t have to resign ourselves to a life with these pesky creatures at all! Gustafson has a personal vendetta when it comes to controlling troublesome insects. As an avid outdoorsman, he spent a lot of time in nature until a dangerous bite

from a disease-carrying tick (a new species of tick here in Rhode Island) sidelined him several years ago. That experience was a catalyst in his decision to become a pest control technician.

After months of extensive training, Stephen fulfilled that goal. Today, he has earned the moniker “Bug Buster” and licensed pest control expert. But he took this pursuit to a next level when he stepped outside the more commonplace toxic treatments used by larger brands (you know them, they are ones that leave behind signs on your lawn like this one: “chemicals applied, do not walk on this grass”). Instead, he chose to work exclusively with a product line which is non-toxic and environmentally-friendly. The cedar-based solution which Stephen uses is 100% natural. This

FOR RELEASE JUNE 10, 2024

EDITORS: These horoscopes are for use the week of JUNE 17, 2024

Be careful about doing someone a favor when you don’t know the full story behind the request. Don’t rely on someone’s unsubstantiated assurances. Insist on all the facts before you act.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be careful about doing someone a favor when you don’t know the full story behind the request. Don’t rely on someone’s unsubstantiated assurances. Insist on all the facts before you act.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)

That workplace problem still needs your attention before you can finally close the book on it. Meanwhile, a long-anticipated reunion gets closer to becoming a happy reality.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might be demanding more from others than they can give. Best advice: Have a long and frank talk to determine what the facts are. Tensions should abate as the week winds down.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That workplace problem still needs your attention before you can finally close the book on it. Meanwhile, a long-anticipated reunion gets closer to becoming a happy reality.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22)

Aspects are favorable throughout this week for making contacts that could be important to your career plans. Meanwhile, an old friend offers the advice you’re seeking.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s time to stop licking your wounds from past mistakes. Get up and get going toward your future. Loyal friends will be there to help the Lion get back into rip-roaring shape.

You might be demanding more from others than they can give. Best advice: Have a long and frank talk to determine what the facts are. Tensions should abate as the week winds down.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Take time out to go over what’s expected of you before you begin your new project. Otherwise, you run the risk of pushing yourself harder than you need to.

Aspects are favorable throughout this week for making contacts that could be important to your career plans. Meanwhile, an old friend offers the advice you’re seeking.

It’s time

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unusual request could put you in an awkward position. Best advice: Deal with it immediately. The longer you delay, the more difficult it will be to get out of it.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should feel recharged and ready for whatever your workaday world holds for you. The same positive energy spills over into your personal relationships.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A prospect might be less than it appears to be. Like the Archer in your sign, you always aim for the truth. And this is no time to settle for less than full disclosure.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Start doing some serious thinking about a career move that could entail more than just changing job sites. Some lifestyle changes might also be involved.

Take time out to go over what’s expected of you before you begin your new project. Otherwise, you run the risk of pushing yourself harder than you need to.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With tensions easing at the workplace, a more positive environment once again encourages the free flow of ideas that are so typical of the always-innovative Aquarian.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show some of that usually hidden steel-strong Piscean backbone and stand up for yourself if you hope to make a case for that promotion you know you deserve.
