• During the Great Fire of New Orleans in 1788, priests refused to allow church bells to be rung as fire alarms because it was Good Friday. As a result, 856 buildings burned during the conflagration. • Ancient Egyptians believed that men menstruated too and that blood in men’s urine and stool was a positive sign of fertility. Little did they know that parasitic worms were the likely cause. • It would take less than six months to get to the moon by car at 60 mph. • It’s not every day that a man in love demonstrates his affection by holding a funeral, but future president Ulysses S. Grant wasn’t every man. When his future wife Julia’s pet canary died, he painstakingly fashioned a small coffin for it, which he painted yellow, then summoned eight of his fellow military officers to Julia’s house, where he conducted a service for the bird. • Babe Ruth once said he knew he didn’t swing hard enough if “a little poop didn’t come out.” • August Rodin’s work “The Age of Bronze” was so realistic that some people thought he’d actually sacrificed a real person inside the cast. • English poet Lord Byron was a student at Cambridge University when he took issue with the ban on keeping dogs as pets, so he came up with a unique way of getting back at the school: Since there was no prohibition in the fine print against bears on campus (probably because they’d never had a pupil quite like Byron before), he not only found a bear to keep as a pet, but also took it for walks around the grounds on a leash. • Despite being raised and identifying as Jewish, singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen spent five years in seclusion at the Mt. Baldy Zen Center in California and was ordained a Buddhist monk in 1996. *** Thought for the Day: “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” — Mark Twain

Coventry re Associat e Ca es & Ey Optical Center 860 Tiogue Avenue, Coventry

King Features Weekly Service

DEAR DR. ROACH: After giving myself allergy shots at home for years, my allergy doctor’s group has decided that it’s too dangerous for patients to do this anymore. The allergy practice will no longer send a vial unless you can prove the shot will be given in a medical facility. Even if you are a nurse or doctor yourself, you still must prove that the shot will be given in a medical facility! Of course, there is a charge per shot if you drive across town to have the allergy practice’s nurse give it. Not long after getting this notice, I read an article about a local child who has improved an insulin injection device. After the alteration, several more doses could be extracted. The article also mentioned children being able to give themselves insulin shots at school! This is such an obvious money grab. How can it be safe for children to give themselves insulin at school but too dangerous for adults to give themselves shots at home? Do you know any reason for this change of policy for giving shots other than docs who can’t get more patients, so they bleed the ones they have dry? — P.S. ANSWER: Insulin therapy is very different from allergy shots. Insulin is routinely given at home, work and school, and is very safe. The difference with an allergy shot is that you are getting a substance you are known to be allergic to. Comparatively, there is a significant risk of an allergic

At-Home Allergy Shots? The Risk Is Too High

reaction. Only 3% to 5% of people getting allergy immunotherapy will have a systemic reaction, and only 1 out of 5,000 shots or so will require epinephrine. That might not sound like a high risk, but for a busy allergy clinic, that means about one person per month. The epinephrine is used to both treat and prevent life-threatening reactions. The guidelines from allergy experts clearly state that injections must be given under qualified medical supervision. Your doctor’s group was not following the standard of care before. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you mentioned that your smartwatch warns you every hour to stand up. Is this a good idea? What else is it good for? — D.K. ANSWER: The evidence that standing periodically has health benefits is fair. One study showed that when people did light-intensity activity (such as walking) for two minutes a day instead of sitting, premature death rates were reduced. Prolonged sitting is associated with heart disease, diabetes and overall cancer rates. The evidence isn’t definitive, but it’s suggestive enough that I do get up and walk around (when I can) when my watch reminds me that I’ve been sitting for a long time. It’s not 100% clear that exercise trackers like pedometers and more advanced devices, such as a smartwatch, increase activity for everyone. It clearly does motivate me. I think it’s a personal decision that needs to be made based on whether you need more exercise (nearly everyone would benefit) and whether it would be motivating. I will say that, for many people, the social aspects of it do get some people to exercise more than they would have otherwise. Some devices let you see your friends’ activity and engage in friendly competition and support. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Upon embarking on a home improvement project, homeowners who have never before lived through such undertakings are often told to expect their projects to take more time than initial estimates suggested. Unforeseen complications can compromise project timelines, and some homeowners may find their projects stuck in neutral. Stalled projects can make life at home difficult, and homeowners may feel helpless with regard to getting a project back on course. But there are ways for homeowners to get stalled projects back on course. • Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road. • Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-ityourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you. • Ask for help. There’s no shame in asking for help to complete a project. Some homeowners may underestimate the scope of a project until it’s too late. Asking family, friends or neighbors for help might be the only way to get a stalled project back on track. Certain home improvement projects may not require advanced skills, and even friends or family with little or no home improvement experience can pitch in to complete such projects. When more advanced projects stall, homeowners may want to hire contractors to complete the work. If budgets have not left much room for hiring a contractor, homeowners can perform some of the labor on their own. • Be mindful of permits. Some home improvement projects require permits, and these permits often have expiration dates. Homeowners must keep permits in mind when projects start to stall, recognizing that they may need to reapply for permits if projects go unfinished for especially long periods of time. Stalled home improvement projects can be a nightmare. But homeowners can address such delays in various ways to get projects back on track.

Fall is a great time to tackle projects around the house. The weather each fall allows homeowners to make improvements to their homes’ exteriors without worrying about extreme heat or cold, while interior projects like painting are made easier because homeowners can open the windows to allow for proper ventilation. Fall also marks a great time to prepare for upcoming projects that can make winter work that much easier. For example, fall is a great time to take stock of your gutters so you can address any issues before leaves begin to fall or the first snowstorm touches down. Compromised gutters can contribute to water issues in basements and adversely affect a home’s foundation if not addressed immediately, so it behooves homeowners to learn the signs that gutters are in need of repair or replacement. • Gutters hanging off the home: Gutters were once installed predominantly with spikes. However, many industry professionals now install gutters with hanger brackets. Why the change? Spikes loosen over time, leading to the gutters hanging off the home. That can contribute to serious issues if left untreated. Gutters hanging off the home need not necessarily be replaced, but rather secured to the home,

ideally with hanger brackets instead of spikes. Brackets hook into the front of the gutter and are then screwed into the fascia of a home. A professional who specializes in gutter repair can perform this task relatively quickly, and it’s an inexpensive yet highly effective solution. • Gutter separation: Gutters that are no longer fastened together can leak and contribute to issues that affect the home’s foundation, siding and appearance. Clogs and the accumulation of debris can cause gutters to separate because they are not designed to hold too much weight. Replacement of separated gutters may or may not be necessary depending on how big the problem is and the condition of the existing gutters. If replacement is not necessary, separated gutters may be remedied by securing the joints, another relatively simple and inexpensive fix. • Peeling exterior paint: Paint that appears to be peeling off of your home may indicate that water is seeping over the edge of the gutter closest to your home. When that happens, water is coming down the side of the house, causing the paint to peel. In such instances, replacing the gutters is often necessary. • Basement flooding: Not all signs of deteriorating gutters are outside a home. Many a homeowner has been flummoxed by flooding in their basements, and such flooding can be caused by aging, ineffective gutters. That’s because deteriorating gutters sometimes allow water to leak near the foundation of a home, contributing to basement flooding. Fall is an ideal time to inspect gutters and have any issues fixed before leaves begin to fall or harsh winter weather arrives.

Improve privacy and security at home desire for privacy. Windows can be purchased with frosting in place, and home improvement retailers sell various products that can create a frosted look.

Fencing and perimeter plantings

Window treatments and frosting Windows allow natural light to enter a home, but windows also enable neighbors and others to see into a home. If thieves are the ones looking inside, wide open windows present a security issue. Window treatments are an effective way to add privacy to a home. Closing curtains or blinds limits others’ ability to see inside the house. Switch to more opaque window treatments when using interior lighting more often, as gossamer draperies may still make it possible for outsiders to understand what’s going on inside the home if people and items are backlit. For those who do not want to compromise natural light, frosted windows can satisfy a

Pergolas and enclosed patios Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or three-season room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings.

Personal tactics Homeowners who do not want their neighbors or others knowing what they’re up to in their free time can limit what they share through photos and descriptions on social media. Doing so also cuts down on neighbors’ curiosity.

Whether homeowners are enjoying their yard in spring or summer or simply want their inhome activities to be less obvious to neighbors, their privacy is a year-round concern. If privacy is a concern, homeowners can take certain steps to ensure their homes stay or become the sanctuaries they were designed to be.

Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes.

fresh perspective Landscaping

June 22, 2020

Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fast-growing evergreens that provide privacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create a more natural and less imposing look.

Living in close proximity to one’s neighbors has its benefits. But many homeowners would no doubt admit that privacy at home is a good thing.

• On July 9, 1877, the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club begins its first lawn tennis tournament at Wimbledon, then an outer-suburb of London. Twenty-one amateurs showed up to compete in the Gentlemen’s Singles tournament, the only event at the first Wimbledon. The winner was to take home a 25-guinea trophy. • On July 10, 1887, a dam breaks in Zug, Switzerland, killing 70 people. The resulting wall of water was so powerful that rescue boats were ineffective, as they capsized in the roiling waters. • On July 7, 1917, Britain establishes the British Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC), authorizing female volunteers to serve alongside their male counterparts in France during World War I. Some 80,000 women enlisted to perform labors such as cookery, mechanical and clerical work, and other tasks. • On July 6, 1944, in Hartford, Connecticut, a fire breaks out under the big top of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey Circus, killing 167 people and injuring 682. An investigation revealed that the tent had been treated with flammable paraffin thinned with three parts of gasoline to make it waterproof. • On July 8, 1959, Maj. Dale Buis and Master Sgt. Chester Ovnand become the first Americans killed in the U.S. phase of the Vietnam War when guerrillas strike a Military Assistance Advisory Group compound in Saigon. • On July 11, 1979, parts of Skylab, America’s first space station, come crashing down on Australia and into the Indian Ocean five years after the last manned Skylab mission ended. Skylab weighed 77 tons.

The popularity of outdoor living spaces has been growing for years. A 2014 study from the home remodeling and design platform Houzz found that 56 percent of homeowners were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. Similarly, nearly 60 percent of architectural practices surveyed by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 said outdoor living spaces were popular features in the homes they built. Outdoor living spaces may also be sound investments for homeowners looking to improve the resale value of their properties. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2017 “Cost vs. Value” report, outdoor living spaces returned between 55 and 71 percent of homeowners’ initial investments at resale. When planning an outdoor living space, homeowners with ample backyards have much to work with. However, to make the most of the space while simultaneously hoping to get as strong a return on their investments as possible, homeowners should look to create spaces that offer broad appeal and are not too personalized. The following are some popular outdoor living space features homeowners may want to consider.

Bars Indoor entertaining areas often include bars, so it makes sense that homeowners want to include a place to prepare and serve beverages to their guests. Homeowners with room in their budgets may want to install wet bars where they can rinse mixers, glasses and other items needed to prepare drinks for their guests. Warming features Features that can keep homeowners and their guests warm after the sun sets include outdoor fireplaces and firepits. A 2016 survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects found that fireplaces and firepits were the most popular outdoor design element in 2016. Such features can provide a focal point in the backyard while also extending the outdoor living season into autumn and even early winter.

Porch space

Outdoor living spaces are often found in the backyard, but homeowners with bigger front yards than backyards may want to expand or open their porch spaces to create more space outside. Porch swings and rocking chairs provide Outdoor kitchens a great place to relax, and porch spaces are covered, Outdoor kitchens allow homeowners to prepare more meaning homeowners can continue to enjoy time outside than just traditional backyard barbecue fare. A standalone even when it begins to rain. charcoal grill in the backyard might get the job done, but Outdoor living spaces are growing in popularity. a built-in gas grill complete with burners and surrounding Homeowners who want to capitalize on this trend can do granite countertop makes for a more functional outdoor so in various ways. entertaining space.

by Jennifer Coates If there is one thing that Mike Seltzer exudes, it is energy. And he needs plenty of it as the founder and longtime owner of CopyCats, a familiar landmark in West Warwick and home to a full-service copy/print, office equipment and sign-making shop. Mike has been in this business since he was a young graduate of the RI School of Electronics in 1984. He has always been entrepreneurial, forward thinking, dedicated, mechanicallyinclined and again, full of energy. What began as a way to put his education to work has evolved into what is now Seltzer’s flourishing business, CopyCats which has been serving Rhode Islanders for over thirty years. CopyCats was officially incorporated in 1987 and has grown and expanded with time. Today, it provides customers with every possible service needed, from making simple copies and selling, installing and repairing office machinery to creating billboard-size banners (and everything in between). As the economy begins to reopen and businesses are stretching their marketing dollars, it is time to contact Mike and his talented team at CopyCats. If you need a bunch of yard signs to announce a milestone event or a couple of hundred flyers to spread the word, call CopyCats. If you need a huge banner to welcome back customers or if that copy machine in your office is on the fritz, call CopyCats. If you need to give your business cards an updated look or you need branded T-shirts to give your employees that unified look, call CopyCats. Just because the world has a been in a standstill doesn’t mean that life stands still. Let CopyCats help you get your feet back on the ground.

Mike Seltzer, the owner of CopyCats in West Warwick, pauses from this usual workload in front of his desk, a place that reflects a lifetime of work, hobbies and passions. Come to CopyCats or visit them at www.copycatsri.com to get your business jump-started this summer.

One of the many things that sets CopyCats apart from its competitors is its reputation for prompt, professional and affordable service, whether it is timely and expedient repair work or creating that polished and attractive presentation you need to launch your new business or revive an old one. Mike has hand-selected a staff of highly-qualified, routinely-trained and reliable professionals who are a large part of why CopyCats has grown and thrived when others have failed. From Gloria at the front desk to Ken, the Lead Technician, to Christopher, the graphic designer for signs, apparel, and printing, you will find the customer service here to be first-rate.

Did you know? When shopping for auto insurance, drivers may be most concerned by the bottom lines on estimates they receive from potential providers. However, the Insurance Information Institute recommends that drivers also investigate a company’s reputation and stability before purchasing an auto insurance policy. Rating companies like AM Best (www.ambest.com) and Standard & Poor’s (www. standardandpoors.com/ratings) vet insurance companies in terms of their financial stability. In addition, government organizations may be able to provide potential policyholders with information regarding the history of consumer complaints filed against certain insurance providers. That history, coupled with information regarding a given firm’s financial stability, can give drivers an accurate picture of insurance providers and whether they’re trustworthy or simply the most affordable option on the market.

What noisy brakes may be telling you a serious problem with the braking system. According to CarsDirect.com, there are two major causes behind the grinding noise made by brakes. If the grinding sound is audible when pressing on the brake pedal, this likely because the rotor disc is coming into contact with part of the caliper. This typically occurs because the brake pads or rotors are extremely worn down, causing the steel backing of the worn out pad to grind against the rotor. In such instances, Pep Boys® recommends replacing the brake pads immediately. If the grinding noise is audible while the vehicle is in motion, debris might be stuck inside the brakes. Drivers might be able to dislodge this debris by repeatedly moving their cars forward and backward in a safe place, such as a driveway. If that does not work, have the brakes serviced by a qualified mechanic.

Squealing

The only noises many drivers ever want to hear coming from their vehicles are the sounds of their favorite songs blasting from their car stereos. But cars sometimes make noises that aren’t nearly as inviting as music. Noises that seem to pop up when applying the brakes can be especially scary for motorists. No one wants to drive a vehicle with faltering or suspect brakes, so learning to distinguish between the two most common brake noises can be a wise move for drivers.

Grinding brakes The automotive retailer Pep Boys® notes that grinding noises indicate

Many drivers are familiar with the high-pitched squealing sound that comes from their vehicles or those of fellow motorists. That squeal, while certainly not music to the ears, might be a good thing. That’s because Pep Boys® notes that some brake pads are equipped with small steel clips that serve as wear indicators. When brake pads have worn down, these devices produce a squealing sound to let drivers know it’s time to get new brake pads. But squealing can be indicative of other things as well. Squealing noises are sometimes heard immediately after brake pads or rotors have been replaced. In such instances, the noise typically subsides within a day or two once the pads have been broken in. Glazed pads also can create a squealing sound. When calipers stick, the brakes stay partially applied, producing excessive friction or heat. The heat causes the brake pads to glaze. No one wants to hear noises coming from their brakes. However, such noises are often a car’s way of telling drivers that brakes need to be serviced.

COVENTRY

MINI-STORAGE

A Random Act of Kindness On Wednesday, June 10, I glanced out my window at my workplace on Rt. 3 at the Harkney Hill Road intersection and I witnessed a pickup truck driver who was attempting to reload sheets of plywood/pressed wood that had slid out the back of the truck bed when he accelerated at a light that had turned green. A blonde haired woman (who by no means was in work clothes) got out of her car and proceeded to assist the man in loading the large sheets back into the truck. Then 2 other gentleman came upon the scene and started helping and the four of them got the material loaded back into the truck. Witnessing these people helping this man made my day and I couldn't help but think; How cool is that? Thank you, B. B.

Cutest Pet of the Week JUNE 30, 2020

Happy 4th of July !! From Your Friends at The Reminder

“Ginger”

Ginger was a Christmas present for our boys in 2017, and we are so lucky to have her. She’s full of love and enthusiasm. If she sees small children, a puppy or a small dog, her eyes light up and her tail goes crazy. She’ll then crouch down onto her belly and crawl to try and “get down to their level” so they don’t get scared. She even likes to cuddle up with our cat when taking naps. Happy companion of Jennifer M.

One of the most recognized symbols of the Fourth of July celebration is the American flag. The American flag began with 13 stars, and today, 50 stars are displayed to represent the number of states now in the union. This number has followed the growth of our country since its infancy. The 13 alternating red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies that joined together to declare their independence from Britain in order to establish themselves as a sovereign nation. Originally, the colors red, white and blue had neither specific meaning nor representation when the flag was adopted in 1777. However, the colors in the Great Seal of the United States did have specific meanings. Charles Thompson, secretary of the Continental Congress, reporting to Congress on the Seal, stated: “The colors of the pales [the vertical stripes] are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence; Red, hardiness and valor; and Blue, the color of the Chief [the broad band above the stripes] signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice.” July 4th, also known as Independence Day, has a fascinating history as well. “No taxation without representation!” That was the battle cry of the 13 colonies in America that were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III with no representation in Parliament. As dissatisfaction grew, British troops were sent in to quell any signs of rebellion, and repeated attempts by the colonists to resolve the crisis without war proved fruitless. June 22, 2020

Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue!

On June 11, 1776, the colonies’ Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia formed a committee to draft a document that would formally sever ties with Great Britain. The committee included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. Jefferson, who was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer, crafted the document. (Nevertheless, a total of 86 changes were made to his draft.) The Continental Congress officially adopted the final version on July 4. The following day, copies of the Declaration of Independence were distributed and, on July 6, “The Pennsylvania Evening Post” became the first newspaper to print the extraordinary document. The Declaration of Independence has since become our nation’s most cherished symbol of liberty.

On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bell-ringing and fireworks. The custom eventually spread to other cities and towns, both large and small, where the day was marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks. Observations throughout the nation became even more common at the end of the War of 1812 with Great Britain. Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938, Congress reaffirmed it as a holiday, but

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good news! After dealing pretty much in the dark with a matter that seemed to be taking forever to resolve, you should soon be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A positive message should help lift that energy-draining sense of anxiety, and you should soon be able to deal with even the peskiest matter, whether at work or personal. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Try to control that heated Sagittarian temperament while dealing with what you believe to be an unfair matter. A cool approach is the best way to handle things. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Nursing hurt feelings could keep you from learning what went wrong. Ask your partner, a family member or a trusted friend to help you reassess your actions in the matter. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Nature is dominant this week. Try to spend time outdoors with someone special. An act of kindness in the past might be recalled by a person you believed was out of your life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An upcoming career decision could be based on how well you might be able to apply your artistic talents. Be sure to use the finest samples of your work to make a strong impression. BORN THIS WEEK: Doing good things for others comes easily to you. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Making things more complicated than they need to be can be a problem for the typically orderly Lamb. Try to look for a less intricate way to accomplish the same goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Avoiding personal involvement in a troubling situation might be advisable at this time, especially since you probably don’t have all the facts. The weekend brings a surprise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A problem with a colleague you thought had been resolved could recur. However, this time you’ll be able to rely on your record to get a quick resolution in your favor. Good luck. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Giving your self-esteem a boost could be a good idea for the Moon Child, who might feel a bit daunted by the week’s occurrences. Just focus on all your positive accomplishments. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The “mane” attraction for the Lovable Lion this week is — what else? — love. New relationships move to new levels, while long-standing partnerships are strengthened. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A recent workplace problem will prove to be one of miscommunication, and once the matter is settled, you should have a better chance of getting your proposals approved.

store-bought sheet cake with white frosting. Rinse and hull a pint or more (depending on size of cake) of fresh strawberries. Slice them in half. Let dry. Rinse and dry a small carton of blueberries. Using a flag for reference, let kids employ their artistic flair by setting the strawberries in rows to resemble the stripes of the flag. Save a quadrant in the top left corner to fill with the blueberry “stars.”

Flag-Inspired July Fourth Fun I eagerly count down the days to the Fourth of July. It’s a special time when Americans gather to celebrate our independence. In my extended family gathering, we even toss in a birthday song to my cousin who was born on the fourth. When she blows out the candles on her cake decorated with mini American flags, it’s a tradition to tease her for being born with a “firecracker” personality. Fly the flag! Whether it’s prepping for a mini-parade and decorating bikes, helmets and pets, or planning a menu, let the flag be your inspiration. Whatever patriotic activity you choose, there’s something red, white, and blue to do.

PAINT AND LEARN

Use a photo or actual flag as a reference and paint a picture of the flag on construction paper. As your child draws, read the Pledge of Allegiance together. Divide the pledge into short phrases and talk about what the words mean to you and your family. For example, what is “liberty,” and what does “justice for all” mean in your daily lives and in your own community?

FLAG STONES

Collect several medium to large rocks with flat sides. Wash and let dry. Paint a flag design on them with red, white and blue acrylic paints. Use small rocks as a napkin weight at your outdoor meal. Use a large rock as a sign to direct people along a walkway to your picnic location by painting a large arrow next to the flag. Set on the ground or on a small table.

STARS AND STRIPES DESSERT

The Fourth of July calls for a special dessert. Decorate a homemade or

Lydia, 3 1/2, tricycles along with flags flying in the breeze at a family fun Fourth of July parade.

WAVE THE FLAG

For post-dusk fireworks fun, plan a sing-along fest. Encourage those who play an instrument like a guitar or ukulele to accompany the group as everyone waves small flags in their hands while singing. Choose contemporary and traditional patriotic songs such as “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “America the Beautiful” and “This Land is Your Land.” *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER

How diners can prepare to go out as restaurants reopen Many communities across the globe have begun to gradually reopen. That’s good news for the millions of small businesses that have struggled as the world responded with extreme caution to prevent the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus from spreading. Estimates from the National Restaurant Association indicate that restaurant sales in the United States decreased by tens of billions of dollars in March and April, while forecasts predicted those numbers would be in the hundreds of billions by the end of the 2020. In recognition of the vital roles restaurants play in building and fostering strong communities, consumers are looking forward to returning to their favorite establishments as economies slowly reopen. Diners can do their part to make reopening efforts successful and sustainable by staying home if they are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19. Venturing out while symptomatic puts everyone, including restaurant workers and fellow diners, at risk, so it’s imperative that people pay attention to their bodies and avoid going out if they are experiencing even mild symptoms. In addition to staying home if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, diners can take these steps to work in partnership with local restaurants as these vital components of the community begin to reopen.

• Dine out in small groups. Phase 1 reopening guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended gatherings be limited to no more than 10 people. But when dining out, consumers should keep their groups even smaller. An

assortment of studies from the CDC have found that the virus is easily spread among groups of people in enclosed spaces. By limiting dinner parties to no more than the number of people in their households, consumers can help restaurants safely reopen. • Wear masks. Wearing a mask to a restaurant may seem odd, but by keeping their mask on until their food arrives, diners can help prevent the spread of the virus.

The World Health Organization notes that it’s believed the virus can spread through small respiratory droplets produced while talking or laughing. So diners can keep themselves and fellow customers and restaurant workers safe by wearing their masks until their food arrives. • Remain patient. Life in the era of social distancing requires significant adjustments, and restaurants reopening will be adjusting right along with everyone else. Afford restaurant staff ample patience and go along with any protocols restaurant owners put in place. All measures are aimed at keeping customers and staff safe while getting people who have been out of work for months back on the job. Each of those goals is worth the patience it may take to help restaurants achieve them. • Order takeout. If you’re uncomfortable visiting a local restaurant in person or frustrated by potentially long wait times for a table, order takeout instead. Restaurants need the business after a very rough stretch, and consumers can benefit greatly from a night off from cooking. Local restaurants are reopening in communities across the globe. Supporting these businesses can be vital to local economies and help millions of people return to work.
