Prayer to St. Jude

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen.

THE REMINDER

• They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in today’s digital age, storing and displaying our treasure trove of images can take some craft work. For a lovely, cheap display, find frames of varying designs in secondhand stores. Remove the glass and lay them out on newspaper. Spray-paint them all the same color and, when dry, frame and hang your favorites in a very cohesive grouping!

• “When on vacation, it’s really easy to take hundreds of pictures, but when you upload them to the computer, it’s hard to find the gems in the mass of files. Spend some time each day reviewing the pictures on your camera, and delete the redundant ones and pics that are obviously not keepers.”

— E.L. in Illinois

• “When my sisters and I get together (there are five of us), we each bring a flash drive with about 50 good, recent family pictures. One sister is a technical whiz, and she put all the pictures together and loads them back on the flash drives, labeled with the date. And then we all watch a picture slideshow together and share our stories.”

— G.B. in Georgia

• Save your favorite family photos to a disk and give a copy to a trusted friend. That way, if anything should happen to your computer/home/etc., you’ll still have those pictures.

• “My mother-in-law has a digital photo frame, and about every six months we send her a new flash drive to plug into the back of it. “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody” (PG-13) — The biographic film based on the life of music legend Whitney Houston is now out on streaming. Naomi Ackie (“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”) portrays Houston as she gets her big break when a producer hears her singing at a nightclub. The film then walks viewers through Houston’s greatest moments during the 1980s and 1990s, including her performance of the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXV as well as her roles in films such as “The Bodyguard.” Even though the film digs deeper into her more personal relationships with notorious bad boy Bobby Brown and close friend/ lover Robyn Crawford, the screenplay itself comes across a bit generic and surface-level. Ackie, and other cast members like Ashton Sanders and Stanley Tucci, do their best to make the script come to life. (Netflix)

“House of Hammer” (TV-MA)

— The past few years have been tumultuous for actor Armie Hammer (“The Social Network,” “Call Me By Your Name”), after allegations of physical, sexual and emotional abuse came out against him from several women in January 2021. Even though the charges were recently dropped against Hammer due to insufficient evidence, a three-part documentary series breaks down the horrific allegations, tying Hammer’s manipulative behavior back to the sociopathic patterns of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather before him. Casey Hammer, Armie’s aunt, also appears in the documentary to give insight into the secrets of her family, spanning back to oil tycoon Armand Hammer (1898-1990), and how it all eventually trickled down to her nephew. Out now. (MAX)

“80 for Brady” (PG-13) — Four elderly best friends — Lou, Trish, Maura and Betty — are die-hard fans of the New England Patriots football team, specifically Tom Brady, the team’s quarterback. While making plans to watch Super Bowl LI, Lou throws around the idea of watching the game in-person. When Lou announces that they won tickets from a radio show giveaway, the foursome make plans to travel to Houston to watch their dream team play, but they soon lose the tickets, forcing them to find another way inside. Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field star in this playful comedy, with Brady, of course, making a few appearances. Premieres July 4. (Amazon Prime Video)

“Reality Check” (NR) — Three years after his last comedy special that took place in the living room of his Los Angeles home, Kevin Hart is back with a new special — this time with material from his “Reality Check” tour, which he embarked on late last year. In this special, Hart focuses on topics similarly covered in his past specials, like his family life and fame, but he claims to be even more unfiltered than he’s been before. With no short supply of curse words or crude jokes, Hart takes the stage with a bat in hand, just in case he needs to “knock someone’s head off.”

(Somewhere in the distance, you can hear Chris Rock quietly taking notes.)

“Reality Check” premieres July 6, on the comedian’s 44th birthday. (Peacock)

Cribbage Board

Do you like to play games on your phone while you’re on a long trip? Today’s travel games have plenty of predecessors. Cribbage, a card game where players keep score with pegs on a board, is believed to have been invented in the 17th century. It became a favorite of sailors and was especially popular on whaling ships.

Sailors would make their own boards out of carved whalebone, animal teeth or tusks. This 19th-century game board, which sold for $531 at an Eldred’s auction, has pierced whalebone panels on an ebony and mahogany board. Sailors continued playing cribbage after whaling declined. Most ships still have a cribbage board today. The U.S. Navy has a board that gets handed down to the oldest submarine in the Pacific fleet, a tradition that originated when an officer was dealt a perfect hand in a game played during World War II.

Q:Ihave a Mexican silver pitcher inlaid with iridescent shells and marked “Alpaca.” Is “Alpaca” the maker? What can you tell me about it?

A:Alpacasilver is a metal. It isn’t really silver, but an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc that may also be called “nickel silver” or “German silver.” It was first used in China and exported to Europe. In 1823, German metalsmiths created a version of nickel silver that was trademarked “Alpacca.” Use of Alpacca spread throughout Europe and the Americas. It can be a base for electroplated nickel silver. Today, alpaca silver is often used in jewelry, tableware and decorative items. It is usually marked “Alpaca” or “Alpacca.” It is more durable than silver, sells for lower prices and may have a less shiny finish than silver. * * *

TIP: Team-signed baseballs should have about 26 autographs, including the entire starting lineup, star pitchers and other key members of the team.

Cribbage is a centuries-old travel game. In the 19th century, sailors on whaling ships made and used boards like this one to pass the time on long voyages.

A star’s signature on the sweet spot is desirable, but that spot is sometimes reserved for the manager.

Cu ing Edge Hair Designs

The Cutting Edge Hair Designs is excited to offer nail services and spa pedicures in our new nail room! Kristen Starziano has many have years of experience as both a nail technician and a hairdresser. For many people, manicures and pedicures are an occasional treat. It feels nice to pamper yourself once in a while, especially when you’re stressed. But what if there are more benefits to manicures and pedicures than you thought? Along with regular manicures and pedicures being a relaxing treat, they’re very beneficial for your health.

Softer skin may seem like a luxurious bonus after a manicure and pedicure. But it’s essential to keep your skin as soft as possible. The skin on your feet, especially the heels, can harden without regular maintenance. This hard skin

can crack, split, and peel. If this condition isn’t dealt with regular pedicures, it can become painful. If untreated, it can even make walking difficult. Soft skin isn’t just for cosmetic value. It’s essential for good health.

Spa manicures and pedicures make your nails look great. But a fresh coat of paint isn’t the only benefit. Regular manicures help your nails remain strong and healthy. Nails not regularly maintained can weaken and split easily. Brittle nails cause pain and discomfort. They’re also more susceptible to infection. Your nails and skin come into contact with the elements and different toxins every time you leave your home. You can protect your nails from infection by keeping them strong. We need good circulation to maintain a healthy body. It’s vital for both hands

Star-brite

and feet. As part of your manicure and pedicure, you receive a brief massage to boost and encourage healthy circulation. This massage also promotes healthy joints and mobility. For this reason, it’s recommended you increase the number of manicures and pedicures you get as you age.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by life. Whether it’s work, family, or new relationships, stress can play a significant role in how you feel. Like any other spa treatment, a manicure or pedicure promotes relaxation. Stress has been linked to chronic diseases, fatigue and even cancer. Lowering your stress levels is one of the best ways to ensure you stay healthy. Studies show just 30 minutes of stress relief each day can significantly boost your health and energy. A manicure or pedicure could be exactly what you need to unwind.

Spa manicures and pedicures are often paired with aromatherapy. You may pick up different scents from the room while you have your treatment. There are many essential oils, like lavender or jasmine, that promote relaxation. In fact, lavender is known to encourage sleep and is used by many to limit their insomnia.

Life can be so busy, it’s

hard to find time for yourself. Whether you’re a stay-athome mom or a six-digit CEO, it’s important to have time that’s entirely yours. Scheduling a manicure or pedicure lets you sit, relax, and concentrate on yourself. Catering to other people’s needs is a way of life for many of us. But you can’t look after others if you don’t look after yourself. In the short time it takes to get your nails done, you could

walk out of the spa feeling fresh and new.

Gel manicures are one of the most popular nail services right now. Although we are sure once the weather finally breaks our spa pedicures will become very popular. Having your nails done not only helps keep your nails healthy it also promotes relaxation. This relaxation also couples with stress relief and you will leave the salon feeling

refreshed and renewed. Any one of our many nail services can help reduce stress in your life and if you are looking for a great way to keep your hands and toes looking beautiful, you need to schedule an appointment with us.

Book an appointment with us today. You will feel better about your nail’s appearance, and you can take your mind off your troubles.

Consumers can never let their guard down when it comes to identity theft. Personal information is much more accessible in an increasingly digital world. Consequently, instances of identity theft and consumer fraud continue to grow.

• The Identity Theft Research Center (ITRC) reported a record number of data compromises in the United States in 2021, amounting to a 68 percent increase over 2020.

• The Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network received more than 5.7 million reports of fraud and identity theft in 2021.

• In Canada, there are 12 victims of identity theft per every 100,000 residents and 52 victims of ID fraud.

• Many North Americans have been victims of COVID19-related fraud, including scams involving fake testing, vaccines and treatments, and charities.

The FTC says identity theft is when someone uses your personal or financial information without your consent. Commonly stolen data includes addresses, credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security numbers, or medical insurance numbers.

Though thieves can gather information by intercepting it through digital channels or simply by stealing mail or going through trash, many times people inadvertently share personal information with scammers themselves. Here’s a look at five common scams.

Rhody Money

5 common identity theft scams

1. Phone scams

Phone scams may involve telemarketers trying to sell you something in exchange for personal information given over the phone, as well as people impersonating government agencies or credit card companies. “Please confirm account information” or “We’ll need your financial information to process” are some of the phrases these scams utilize. Never give out personal information over the phone unless you’ve confirmed the individual you’re speaking to is legitimate.

2. Text links

The Pew Research Center says 81 percent of adult mobile phone users use text messages regularly. Scammers utilize text messages to try to gain information. The text includes a link to a site that will request personal information. Do not respond to such texts and avoid clicking on the links.

3. Phishing emails

Phishing emails look like they are coming from legitimate sources, but they often contain malware that can infiltrate computers and other devices to steal identity data. Phishing increased during the COVID-19 lockdowns as more people were working from home, according to the ITRC.

4. Medicare card verification

Older individuals long have been targets of criminals. Seniors are now being called, emailed or even visited in person by scammers claiming to represent Medicare. Perpetrators

of this scam offer new services or new chipped Medicare cards in exchange for verification of Medicare identification numbers. Medicare numbers should be carefully guarded, and seniors should keep in mind it’s highly unlikely Medicare representatives will contact them in this way.

5. Data breaches

It’s not just a home computer or phone breach you need to worry about. According to ARAG Legal, security experts indicate many major companies are being breached. By the time it’s discovered that data was stolen, your personal information, which usually includes credit card numbers, email addresses and home addresses, has been circulating for some time. While it’s impossible for private citizens to prevent this type of data breach, a credit monitoring service can alert consumers if their information shows up where it seemingly doesn’t belong.

Identity theft is an ever-present threat and consumers must exercise due diligence to protect their personal information.

“The Flag Under Which I Fought so Many Battles”

Before Covid when I was looking at some antiques on the west coast, a first national Confederate flag was brought in for me to look at. According to the person who brought it in, it was brought back from the Civil War and had been passed down through the family since 1865. Four years later they contacted me while they were visiting New England and brought it to my office.

The original owner of the flag was Russell B. Caples who was born on December 23, 1841, near Weston, Missouri, the son of a minister of the gospel. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the Confederate army as a private in Searcy’s Sharpshooters, a company in the 16th Missouri infantry. He fought in the western theater early on under General Earl Van Dorn then General Sterling Price and fought in many battles until he was wounded at the Battle of Vicksburg and evacuated to

Louisiana. After he recovered from his wounds, he returned to the regiment and was given the rank of Brevet Lieutenant. In April 1865, what was left of his regiment surrendered at Shreveport, Louisiana and he returned home to Glasgow, Missouri. He wrote “Returning to Glasgow, I kept my sash and the flag under which I had fought so many battles.”

He returned home to find out his father had been mortally wounded during the Battle of Glasgow and had died. He had no job, no money, and had two half-sisters to take care of. Caples gave up farming to become a lawyer and in the early 1870s he was admitted to the bar. He married Miss Agnes Belden Watts in 1877 and had six children. Although having been a democrat, he switched to the Republican party as he said, “the Republican party was the party that did things-from the abolishing of slavery to the building of the Panama Canal.” Later in life he was a well-respected judge as well as an advocate of the soldiers who had fought during the war as well as those younger folks now serving in the military. He died on October 26, 1915.

The flag he brought home is of the first national pattern made of red and white silk with a blue silk canton which contains 14 stars. It is entirely hand sewn and has a piece of black crepe attached as well as two succession cockades. It is slightly faded and has some wear from age and use but is in overall good condition. Along with the flag came his crimson silk sash he had worn as a lieutenant as mentioned above. Two important reminders of when he was a young soldier fighting in the Civil War that survive to this day.
