Exercise is important for every member of a family, including the family dog. According to SPCA Florida, regular exercise is just as important for dogs as it is for their owners. Many dog owners find ways to incorporate their dogs into their own exercise routines in order to ensure their four-legged friends get enough physical activity each day. For example, dogs might come along on jogs around the neighborhood or join their owners on walks in the park. But what about those times when the weather is extreme? Snowstorms and heat waves might compromise dog owners’ efforts to get their pooches daily exercise. But there are many ways that dog owners can work around extreme weather to ensure Fido gets enough physical activity to stay healthy. • Alter the time of your dog’s daily exercise routine. In conditions that are extremely hot, dog owners can change their routines so dogs get out and get some exercise during the times of day when the weather is temperate. Early morning and evening or even nighttime exercise sessions afford chances time to run around outdoors without doing so under the blazing summer sun. If walking dogs after sundown, dress them in reflective materials so they’re visible to oncoming motorists. • Dress dogs for the cold. Dogs can be bundled up just like their owners bundle up in gloves and layers when spending time
outside in cold weather. Salt and chemical de-icing solutions can injure dogs, burning and drying out their paws, so make sure their paws are covered before taking them outside in icy, snowy conditions. Dogs may need a few practice runs wearing booties indoors before they’re comfortable enough to wear them outside without trying to remove them. In addition, Petfinder recommends keeping dogs’ bodies warm by dressing them in doggy jackets or vests. • Reduce the length of time spent outdoors. Cutting back on the time dogs spend outdoors in extreme weather is another way to protect them from the elements. Shorter, more frequent trips can ensure dogs get enough daily exercise while limiting their exposure to extreme weather. If dogs are accustomed to 30 minutes of running around in the backyard in the afternoon, break that down to three 10-minute sessions instead, spacing out each sessions so dogs have time to recuperate. • Exercise indoors if necessary. Avoid exercising dogs outdoors in especially extreme conditions. Rather than exposing dogs to extreme weather, make a game out of running up and down staircases or play fetch in a hallway to help dogs burn off their energy and get some exercise. Extreme weather can be harmful to dogs. But there’s still ways to exercise pooches in periods of inclement weather.

Scientists and environmentalists have been warning the public for years that honeybees are disappearing at alarming rates. Scientists were initially uncertain in regard to what was decimating bee populations. Even though no single cause is to blame, data has pointed to pesticide use and the mysterious colony collapse disorder, which is a name given to the dwindling colonies seen around the world. National Geographic News says bees are essential because of their roles as pollinators. Agriculture industries rely on honeybees, especially managed honeybees, to keep commercial crops pollinated and productive. Estimates indicate that roughly one-third of U.S. crops rely on honeybees — accounting for more than $15 billion in crop production. Without bees, the costs of everything from blueberries to apples to broccoli would rise, as farmers would have to use a different, more expensive pollination method. Even though backyard beehives or bee farms may not be crucial to consumer agriculture, bringing healthy colonies back to various areas is beneficial to the environment overall. The art of beekeeping has become an important endeavor, and just about anyone with some time and resources can start their own apiary. • Start by studying bees. Interested

beekeepers can begin their journey by reading all they can on beekeeping. The American Bee Journal or backyard beekeeping books and articles are great places to start. Local beekeeping associations also are invaluable resources for information on local bee species and traits. • Know the laws. It’s important to get the go-ahead from local authorities before introducing bees into the community. By checking city or town ordinances, potential beekeepers will know how many hives are allowed and which type of property sizes are amenable and allowable. • Get the right supplies. Research can help prospective beekeepers understand the type of equipment they will need. One can purchase this equipment, but some beekeeping organizations may be willing to lend or rent it to interested parties. Hive boxes, bottom boards, a veil, a jacket, a smoker, and a top feeder are just some of the supplies needed. • Order bees. Bees can be acquired from other beekeeping enthusiasts or can be ordered online. The bees will need to consist of the queen, drones and worker bees. According to the resource Bees Brothers, a starter set of bees is called a “nuc.” Bee suppliers start selling in the winter for spring swarms. • Place the hive. It’s important to set up hives away from foot traffic. In addition, face hives away from strong winds, with the ideal directions being east and south. Hives need sunshine and some shade on summer afternoons, advises BackYardHive. With time, homeowners can become successful beekeepers and do their part to replenish much-needed bee colonies.

Prayer to the
BLESSED VIRGIN
(Never known to fail). O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the sea, help me and show me here in, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times.) Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you. Grateful Thanks. LP
This prayer should be said for three consecutive days. After the third day your sincere wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to offer Thanksgiving by sharing it and expressing it on granting of your favour. The idea is to spread the wonder of the Holy Spirit.
Miraculous prayer to the Holy Spirit Holy spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. To that end and submitting to God’s holy will, I ask from you...(mention your favour) Amen. LP

Summertime fun frequently involves a trip to the seaside. While days are spent with toes in the sand, once the sun sets the entertainment moves away from the sand to the boardwalk attractions, food and fanfare. Today, Atlantic City, New Jersey, is known for its casinos. But the city has a storied history as a seaside retreat. The Atlantic City Boardwalk opened on June 26, 1870, becoming the first boardwalk in the United States. National Geographic explains the first wooden planks were laid to curb the amount of sand beachcombers tracked into the train and hotel lobbies. Eventually, the boardwalk itself, with arcade halls and amusement attractions, would become its own destination. Soon other boardwalks opened across the country, including in Coney Island, New York, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Boardwalks became hubs of summertime fun, with food and confections. A well-known boardwalk treat, salt water taffy is a summertime staple. Salt water taffy is a soft taffy that was originally produced and marketed in Atlantic City. According to popular lore,
caught on. A man named Joseph Franlinger helped make salt water taffy a household name. After observing boardwalk visitors purchasing the candy during seaside jaunts, he found a way to box the candy and sell it so it wouldn’t be reserved only for summer holidays. According to candy manufacturer Wokenfuss, by the 1920s, salt water taffy was at the height of its popularity, with more than 450 manufacturers making and/or selling the candy at the time. Each had his own method of preserving the candy, making it less sticky and more portable. Taffy was first prepared in copper kettles heated over open coals. The sugary mixture was cooled on marble slabs and then pulled from a large hook. The pulling incorporated air into the mix to help keep the taffy soft. The taffy was hand-rolled to the desired thickness, cut and then wrapped. Salt water taffy is primarily a treat enjoyed on the east coast of the United States, but it is sold throughout the United States and Canada. No trip to the boardwalk is complete without snagging a piece of sweet salt water taffy.

Rooms can serve double duty
Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help homeowners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

Outdoor entertaining areas are popular among homeowners, and firepits are one of the most soughtafter additions to such spaces. In fact, a 2016 survey from the American Society of Landscape Architects found that fireplaces and firepits were the most popular outdoor design element in 2016. Various styles are available to homeowners who want to add firepits to their backyards, and choosing the right type may come down to budget, the amount of yard space available or even personal preference. • Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits. • Gas firepit: Gas firepits are touted for their convenience, as they don’t require homeowners to carry wood
and build fires. Upon being connected to a gas source, gas firepits provide fire at the click of a switch. Gas firepits are also appreciated for their safety, as there is little or no risk that flames from gas firepits will grow too large and become difficult to control. • Gas fire tables: Gas fire tables might be ideal for those homeowners whose sense of decor favors more modern looks. Gas fire tables come in a variety of shapes and sizes and, like gas firepits, there’s no need to struggle with lighting a fire or carrying firewood. • Tabletop firepits: Homeowners, condominium or apartment dwellers with limited backyard space may want to consider the convenience of tabletop firepits. Restaurants may use tabletop firepits in their outdoor seating areas because they provide warmth and ambiance without taking up much space. Tabletop firepits fueled by gas will not need to be connected to a gas source, which may appeal to consumers who want something that’s simple as well as small. • Fire urns: While they might not technically qualify as firepits, fire urns provide a similar effect as firepits. Fire urns are typically gas-powered and may be an ideal choice for homeowners who are looking for a unique, aweinspiring feature for their outdoor entertaining areas.

by Jennifer Coates If there is one thing that Mike Seltzer exudes, it is energy, and he needs plenty of it as the founder and longtime owner of CopyCats, a familiar landmark in West Warwick and home to a full-service copy/print, office equipment and sign-making shop. Mike has been in this business since he was a young graduate of the RI School of Electronics in 1984. He has always been entrepreneurial, forward thinking, dedicated, mechanically-inclined and again, full of energy. What began as a way to put his education to work has evolved into what is now Seltzer’s flourishing business, CopyCats which has been serving Rhode Islanders for over thirty years. CopyCats was officially incorporated in 1987 and has grown and expanded with time. Today, it provides customers with every possible service needed, from making simple copies and selling, installing, and repairing office machinery to creating billboard-size banners (and everything in between). As the economy begins to reopen and businesses are stretching their marketing dollars, it is time to contact Mike and his talented team at CopyCats. If you need a bunch of yard signs to announce a milestone event or a couple of hundred flyers to spread the word, call CopyCats. If you need a huge banner to welcome back customers or if that copy machine in your office is on the fritz, call CopyCats. If you need to give your business cards an updated look or you need branded T-shirts to give your employees that unified look, call CopyCats. Just because the world has a been in

JM

NOW PAYING CA$H
Auto insurance is a necessity for drivers in many localities. But while local laws may mandate drivers have insurance, no such laws mandate how much drivers must pay to insure their vehicles. Certain factors can influence just how much drivers will pay for their auto insurance policies. 1. Complacency: Doing nothing at all may find you spending too much on auto insurance. Many drivers fail to routinely shop around for coverage, and that can be costing them money. In its 2013 Insurance Shopping Study, the research firm J.D. Power found that only 23 percent of auto insurance customers shopped their policies in the past 12 months. Shopping around for a better rate can save drivers considerable amounts of money, and the Internet has made comparison shopping easier than ever before. 2. Coverage and deductibles: The type of coverage you choose, as well as the amount of your deductible, will affect the cost of your policy. Choosing a higher deductible (the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance will start to pay) usually leads to a lower monthly payment. Full coverage may not be necessary if you own your car or the car is old and not worth that much. 3. Location: Where you live can affect the cost of your insurance premiums. Since most traffic accidents occur close to home, the area where you live factors heavily in the cost of your policy. Densely populated neighborhoods with more cars mean you could be at a higher risk of accident, theft and injury. Plus, costs for repairs may be higher in these areas. Moving to a less populated area can reduce insurance costs. 4. Age/gender: A person cannot change his or her age, but it’s wise July 27, 2020
F&G Salvage, Inc.
Roll Off Dumpsters Available
8 factors that can affect auto insurance premiums
to realize that age and gender can affect costs. Young men typically incur higher rates than young women. Understanding your potential insurance costs can help you when choosing a vehicle. 5. Vehicle type: According to State Farm, some insurance companies increase premiums for cars deemed more likely to be damaged or stolen. A vehicle that scores high in independent safety ratings may be cheaper to insure than vehicles that scored low on safety tests. 6. Credit score: Raise your credit score and you may be able to lower your car insurance costs. According to the research firm Conning & Co., roughly 92 percent of insurers use your credit information as a factor to determine rates. Studies show that people with bad credit tend to file more and higher claims. 7. Marital status: Statistics show that people who have tied the knot are involved in fewer accidents and given fewer tickets than people who are single. Getting married can reduce insurance premiums, as can combining or bundling policies with your spouse. 8. Driving history: A driving history full of accidents and tickets can affect your insurance rates. However, many tickets and accidents that do not involve injuries stop affecting insurance rates after three years. Driving safely and biding your time until your tickets and accidents no longer influence your rates can save you money. Drivers have control over how much they spend on auto insurance. Safe driving habits, the right choice of vehicle and where drivers choose to live can influence the cost of their auto insurance policies.

By Lucie Winborne • There is symbolism in Disney’s Cinderella mosaic. The company says that “guests can see that each of Cinderella’s stepsisters appears with her own special facial tint. One sister displays a red tint to show that she is ‘red with rage,’ while the other sister displays a green tint to show that she is ‘green with envy,’ as they watch Cinderella try on the glass slipper to reveal a perfect fit.” • Eating more candy in one sitting causes fewer cavities than spacing it out through the day. • “The Hound of Heaven” poet Francis Thompson is listed as a Jack the Ripper suspect. Although there is no physical evidence to back up this bizarre claim, independent researchers say the imagery in Thompson’s poetry, plus his background as a medical student, are valid grounds for suspicion! • Sorry, but that cream filling in Twinkies isn’t cream at all — it’s vegetable shortening. • Due to heat expansion of its iron, the Eiffel Tower can “grow” by up to 6 inches in the summertime. • Need one more reason to hate Mondays? A home is the most costly thing many people will ever buy. The process of buying a home can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. One way to make the process of buying a home go more smoothly is to save enough money to put down a substantial down payment. Saving for a down payment on a home is similar to saving for other items, only on a far grander scale. Many financial planners and real estate professionals recommend prospective home buyers put down no less than 20 percent of the total cost of the home they’re buying. Down payments short of 20 percent will require private mortgage insurance, or PMI. The cost of PMI depends on a host of variables, but is generally between 0.3 and 1.5 percent of the original loan amount. While plenty of homeowners pay PMI, buyers who can afford to put down 20 percent can save themselves a considerable amount of money by doing so. Down payments on a home tend to be substantial, but the following are a few strategies prospective home buyers can employ to grow their savings with an eye toward making a down payment on their next home. • Decide when you want to buy. The first step to buying a home begins when buyers save their first dollar for a down payment. Deciding when to buy can help buyers develop a saving strategy. If buyers decide they want to buy in five years away, they will have more time to build their savings. If buyers want to buy within a year, they will need to save more each month,
and those whose existing savings fall far short of the 20 percent threshold may have to accept paying PMI. • Prequalify for a mortgage. Before buyers even look for their new homes, they should first sit down with a mortgage lender to determine how much a mortgage they will qualify for. Prequalifying for a mortgage can make the home buying process a lot easier, and it also can give firsttime buyers an idea of how much they can spend. Once lenders prequalify prospective buyers, the buyers can then do the simple math to determine how much they will need to put down. For example, preapproval for a $300,000 loan means buyers will have to put down $60,000 to meet the 20 percent down payment threshold. In that example, buyers can put down less than $60,000, but they will then have to pay PMI. It’s important for buyers to understand that a down payment is not the only costs they will have to come up with when buying a home. Closing costs and other fees will also need to be paid by the buyers. • Examine monthly expenses. Once buyers learn how much mortgage they will qualify for, they will then see how close they are to buying a home. But prospective buyers of all means can save more each month by examining their monthly expenses and looking for ways to save. Buyers can begin by looking over their recent spending habits and then seeing where they can spend less. Cutting back on luxuries and other unnecessary spending can help buyers get closer to buying their next home. • Avoid risky investments. Some times it’s great to take risks when investing, but risk should be avoided when saving for a down payment on a home. Traditional vehicles like certificates of deposit, or CDs, and savings accounts can ensure the money buyers are saving for their homes is protected and not subject to market fluctuations. Saving enough to make a down payment on a home can be accomplished if buyers stay disciplined with regard to saving and make sound financial decisions.

Benefits of shopping farmers markets
Farmers markets have grown in popularity in recent years. Nowadays, consumers interested in farmers markets can likely find one near their homes whether those homes are in rural communities, the suburbs or bustling cities. People who have never before shopped farmers markets may be curious as to why many people find them so appealing. The following are a handful of benefits of shopping farmers markets that might turn market novices into full-fledged devotees. • Freshness: Many people visit farmers markets because the fruits and vegetables sold at such markets seem to taste more fresh than those sold at chain grocery stores. People are not mistaken, as the produce available at farmers markets often comes from local farms, meaning there’s no longdistance shipping necessary. Locally sourced foods need not be frozen en route to the market, meaning foods
purchased there tend to taste especially fresh. • In-season foods: Some grocery stores may sell fruits and vegetables even when those foods are out of season. Farmers markets only sell in-season fruits and vegetables. To grow fruits and vegetables out-of-season, farmers may need to rely on chemicals or other unnatural methods. No such means are necessary when farmers stick to growing foods in-season. • Environmental benefits: According to the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, food in the United States travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to consumers’ plates. Such journeys burn natural resources, pollute the air and produce sizable amounts of trash that ultimately ends up in landfills and/or the world’s oceans. Because food sold at farmers markets is locally sourced, considerably fewer natural resources are necessary to transport the food from farm to table, and the relatively short distances the food travels translates to less air pollution. • Biodiversity: Many farmers market shoppers find unique foods not readily available at their local grocery stores. This is not only a great way to discover new and delicious foods, but also a way to promote biodiversity. • Hormone-free animal products: Farmers markets do not exclusively sell fruits and vegetables. Many farmers markets also are great places to find meats, cheeses and eggs. Animal products sold at farmers markets are typically antibiotic- and hormonefree, which is both more humane to the animals and healthier than animal products produced with hormones or antibiotics. Farmers markets are more accessible than ever, and the benefits to shopping such markets are endless.

SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER Prayer to St. Jude
Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen. R.R.

A Random Act
of Kindness
Several Weeks ago, we went to a local restaurant for dinner. When we arrived a line was forming at the door, since the capacity of 50% was already met inside. While waiting, we met a nice family and carried on a conversation. Meanwhile, it was our turn to enter the restaurant. After dinner, our server presented us our check and said it was paid for by the family we met earlier, while waiting outdoors. On our way out we stopped to say “Thank You” for their generosity and they said they were looking for someone like us to treat!! Now that’s a Random Act of Kindness! Thank You! R. C.

Dual-income families became the new normal in recent decades. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 63 percent of married-couple families had both parents employed in 2018. The same trend emerged in Canada, where the Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada found that the number of Canadian families with two employed parents nearly doubled between 1976 and 2015. Couples in dual income households have difficult decisions to make when starting families. Women who want to take time away from their careers to raise children no doubt recognize the long-term effects that such a decision may have on their careers. Researchers behind the “Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research” report released in October 2018 found that women who leave the workforce at age 31 and do no reenter it for five years can expect to earn 20 percent less over their lifetimes than male counterparts who never left the workforce. That’s a significant loss in earning potential, but one that millions of women accept each year. Reentering the workforce after a long period of not working is a challenge, but it’s one that women can overcome with the help of a handful of strategies. • Get a head start. Fair or not and intentionally or not, prospective employers may attach a stigma to applicants who have not worked in several years. There’s no guaranteed way to clear that hurdle, but volunteering or interning in your field and/or taking a course at a local college before you begin your job search can serve as something of a head start. This can be a great way to dust off old skills and learn about any changes within the industry that took place during your hiatus. • Deemphasize chronology on your résumé. The online job bank Monster.com recommends using your résumé to highlight your skills and accomplishments instead of your dates of employment. This shifts the focus away from your time out of the field and toward your experience and previous successes. • Get in touch with your network. Many professionals advance their careers with the help of a strong network of fellow professionals. So it makes sense to contact this network when you’re reentering the workforce. Former colleagues can be great sources regarding job openings and changes in the industry that might have taken place while you were out of the loop. Reach out to them and let them know you’re ready to reenter the workforce. • Consider part-time work. If a full-time offer is not materializing, consider part-time work. Part-time work will bring some money into the household, let you ease back into working and give you a chance to add some recent experience to your résumé. And part-time jobs may ultimately lead to offers for full-time work. Reentering the workforce after time away is a challenge, but it’s one women can overcome with perseverance and some savvy strategies.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t gnash those pearly whites because you might have to delay your plans. This could give the Lucky Lamb a better perspective of what’s been done, and what still needs doing. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Scoring financial bull’s-eyes is easy for the focused Bovine who knows the ins and outs of the marketplace. But even with your success record, caution is still the watchword. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Watch that tendency to over-romanticize a situation that should be given closer scrutiny. Better to be suspicious now and ask for an explanation, rather than face a sad surprise later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Bruised self-confidence can make things difficult unless you accept the fact that you have what it takes. Ignore the critics and concentrate on believing in yourself. Good luck. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Congratulations on what you’ve accomplished. But this is no time to curl up for some serious catnapping. Your rivals are probably already working on plans to overtake your lead. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your adventurous side wants to play a more dominant role this week, and you might want to oblige. Try to arrange for some getaway time with that special person.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Taking logical approaches to pesky workplace issues can help resolve even long-standing problems. A shift in policy might catch you by surprise. Be alert to signs of change. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your kindness and compassion are exactly what are needed in dealing with an awkward situation in the early part of the week. Share the weekend fun with family. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Keeping your focus straight and true is a good way of getting your points across. Save any variations for a later time. The musical arts are important this weekend. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Reject advice to cut corners in reaching your goal. Better to take a little more time to do the job as you promised. You’ll gain new respect for your honesty and integrity. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t allow a troublesome situation to grow so big that it will be increasingly difficult to deal with. The sooner you speak up, the sooner everyone will be able to benefit. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Confronting someone who is making a lot of mistakes could be the kindest thing you can do both for that person and for anyone who could be adversely affected by the errors. BORN THIS WEEK: You absolutely glow when you see beautiful things, and everyone around you is warmed by your light.

Sprayed by a Skunk! DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were camping this weekend, and on our last day in the woods my dog “Jumper” had a run-in with a skunk. He is really rank. I tried washing him off in the lake, but it didn’t seem to help the smell at all. We had to drive home with this incredibly bad smell permeating the car. Jumper smells almost as bad today as he did on Sunday. How can I get rid of the odor? — Rick in Burlington, Vermont DEAR RICK: That odor really lingers! Good job trying to wash Jumper’s coat in the lake as soon as possible; that may have helped a little bit. You’ll have to use a bit of chemistry to remove the oily skunk spray. Tomato juice is recommended by many people, and it does have some effect because it’s a little bit acidic and can break up some of the oils. Its aroma also helps mask the skunk scent, at least temporarily. Another cleaning recipe, found on American Kennel Club’s website (www.AKC.org), mixes baking soda with mild detergent and household hydrogen peroxide (3% strength). The foaming mixture can be worked into your dog’s coat, left on for about five minutes and then rinsed away. With any solution or recipe you use, be careful to not let it get into Jumper’s eyes, ears or nose. Many of the ingredients are irritants that can cause a lot of discomfort. Deodorizing your car will take some extra effort. You can gently clean the upholstery, floor mats and headliner with a cloth dipped in a solution of water and baking soda. The baking soda will dry to a haze and needs to be vacuumed off. Follow up with a shampoo formulated for car interiors. Hammer Natural Prints With Garden Leaves Green leaves just don’t get the attention they deserve. Usually, we “ooh” and “aah” in the fall at the emerging splashy colors of crimson and golden leaves on trees and bushes. But there is infinite variety in the green and the gray of those leaves on trees, vegetable plants and bushes that continually grow, shade and add a natural umbrella in gardens and parks in the hottest of summer days. Pick a handful of fresh leaves and sprouting greens from your trees, shrubs and vegetable garden, and look at them with your kids through a magnifying glass. Observe their intricate patterns and delicate design, and then print them onto fabric with a zany technique using a hammer from the toolbox and your child’s muscle and energy. First, collect the fresh green leaves. Ferns from an indoor floral bouquet also work well. Then, decide what you would like to print, such as a plain white or cream-colored cotton fabric T-shirt, an apron, potholder or library book bag. Cover a hard, flat surface such as a picnic table or wooden breadboard with plain paper bags. Set the fabric to be printed on top. If using a T-shirt or tote bag, place a sheet of wax paper or cardboard inside the shirt or bag.
Arrange a leaf or fern on the fabric (secure it in place with small pieces of masking tape, if you wish), and cover with a sheet of wax paper. Hammer over the wax-paper-covered leaf until its color has been absorbed into the fabric. It’s important that you hit every part of the leaf to release the natural pigments. Remove the leaf or fern and wax paper to reveal the natural image. Colors vary in intensity, so you may wish to test several varieties on a piece of scrap fabric first. Repeat the process with additional leaves. Try it with a few flowers, too, and see how the beautiful colors from nature appear. Label each print with the name of the tree, plant or flower using a permanent marker. Note: The natural pigments may eventually fade. Wash fabric in cold water.
Extra Idea: You also may use paper instead of fabric to create lovely stationery, gift tags or bookmarks. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide.
