Exercise at the Rec Center

* * *

The senior center commandeered a large space at the rec center to use in an experiment. Their goal: to determine if we actually meant what we said about not coming in for exercise classes in a cramped senior center space where we’re all breathing on one another. Find more room, we’d said, room to spreadHence,out.the borrowed space at the rec center (which had to cancel the Tots and Mommy Workout Hour ... something about a stay-at-home father objecting to the name of the class). The rec center space was nicely dec orated with blue painter’s tape X spots across the floor, 10 feet apart. Then before we started, we got a little talk. “How many of you haven’t taken an exercise class in two years?” asked the too-young male exercise coach we’d never met before. Hands went up. There was a knowing nod from the coach and the admonishment: “We’ll be taking this nice and easy. Do not push yourselves. If you need to stop and rest, then do that. Nobody will judge you.” He cast a fierce look around the room as he said that. The routine the coach put us through was a perfect combination of nearly everything, starting with mild stretch ing, moving into a few minutes of yoga poses, some cha-cha steps, a few ballet moves, leg lifts, toe touches and more. During our cool down (although we hadn’t actually worked up a sweat) the coach inquired: “How many want to do this again? Twice a week, same time.”Hands went up, because, yes, we wanted more of this. We each took a handout at the door as we left, instructions for doing these exercises at home in case we didn’t like the rec center setup. But I have a feeling we’re all going to show up next week. It’s the first bit of normal in two years.

Q:My daughter’s name is Kel ly, and when she was a tod dler, I started buying a small doll named Kelly that was Barbie’s “lit tle sister.” They were sold for about $5 each, if I remember correctly. I bought a dozen of them over the years, putting them immediately into a box for safekeeping. They are all in their original boxes. They’ve never been opened. Are they just a fun remembrance of her childhood, or will they be worth something in the future?

This terra cotta tobacco jar by Jon Maresch, shaped like a smiling black dog, is marked JM#116 and sold at Fox Auctions for $240. Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL By Terry and Kim Kovel

Many figural tobacco jars were made in the late 1800s and early 1900s, marked with just the letters “JM” or the letters and the printed word “Bohe mia” or “Czechoslovakia.” The jars held loose pipe tobacco, but they were not humidors made to control humid ity. The figural jars are about 18 to 20 inches high with small statues of chil dren seated in chairs, a dog in a bar rel, a man drinking beer, even Buster Brown or gnomes. Some of the jars are also marked with a city, the location of one of the many factories like Aussig, Bohemia. Most of the jars were made of terra cotta or majolica. A telltale, signed JM jar has buff col ored edges showing the ceramic. The maker was Johann Maresch (18211914). He worked at many different factories and probably owned some of them. Other potters also used an initial mark. The jars by Johann Maresch sell for $300 to $500. The other potters’ work sells for less than $200.

Robin also does the increasingly popular “color street nails” ~ and her work is as beautiful as any of the artists whose work is featured here. Come explore Endeavors & More at 89 Sandy Bottom Road. Call Robin at 401323-9825 or nd her on Facebook. Open Monday & Thursday, 3am~9pm, Tues., Wed., Friday, 10am ~ 6pm, and Saturdays 11am ~ 5pm. Closed on Sundays..

There are many words that come to mind when describing Endeavors & More, an inviting and cheerful gift shop in Coventry. Some might say the shop is magical, others might say it’s a sensory journey of sight, sound, scent, and touch. Some might say it is a captivating exhibition of creativity, imagination, and craftsmanship. But for Robin Gursky, the owner of Endeavors & More, there is only one word to describe it; that word is “inspired.” For as long as she can remember, Robin Gursky has loved handicrafts. In the back of her mind, the thought has long-lingered that she could someday celebrate the work of her fellow crafters. Robin took the matter to God, praying to know whether this endeavor was “meant to be.” When an opportunity arose to open such a place, this was the inspired answer Robin was looking for. The decision was made. The idea of Endeavors & More took ight.Today, Endeavors & More is a place where artisans from across the region can share their talents with Robin, and with her ever-growing list of loyal followers. It is both a crafter’s dream and a shopper’s dream! Crafters now have this neat and orderly space to display their work.Assoon as you enter the shop, you feel the sunlight illuminating a bright and welcoming room lled with the handiwork of artists and craftsmen from every corner of the area. Each piece of artwork is unique and original, and each is conceived in a creative mind and heart. Endeavors & More is not a consignment shop, instead, artists rent their space for four months, after which they can renew or end their contract. There is also space in the back of the shop that can be rented by the artists to teach their special talents.

A crafter’s heaven, and a shopper’s dream

The variety and diversity of items sold here is endless ~ everything from jewelry and quilts to candles and baby blankets, from children’s sundresses to dog bandanas, and paintings to those suncatchers ~ there are even furry “Squatch” dolls and whimsical Fairy gardens! Shoppers who visit Endeavors & More will discover custom-printed T-shirts and sweatshirts, exquisitely crafted pieces of functional woodwork, hand-made stationary, adorable gnomes, and seasonal wreaths that are sure to “wow” any passerby. In line with Robin’s commitment to highlighting local vendors, she even sells locally produced honey and mapleRobinsyrup.is also a Young Living® Essential Oils vendor and representative, so if you are a fan of essential oils, be sure to check out her impressive inventory!

Q:Is it true that they are reviv ing “The Love Boat”? Will it have celebrity guest stars like the original did? It’s a shame the late Gavin MacLeod can’t be a part of it. — Y.R. A:Yes, “The Love Boat” is the lat est nostalgic reboot of an old TV show, but with a twist. It won’t be a dra ma with celebrities like Charo looking for fictional love. Instead, according to TV Guide, the new version will be a reality show where “singles set sail on a real Princess cruise ship and, as they vis it exotic Mediterranean ports, pair up to test their chemistry with challenges.” Real-life husband and wife Jerry O’Con nell and Rebecca Romijn are hosts of the dating show, and while you won’t see Gavin MacLeod, who played Capt. Stub ing and passed away last year, you will see other familiar faces. Jill Whelan, who played little Vicki Stubing, and Ted Lange, who played bartender Isaac, will pop in to offer words of advice to the contestants.

Q:Is LeAnn Rimes still doing music? I remember seeing her on a billboard for a concert at a local casino a while back, but nothing since. — F.N. A:It’s been 25 years since LeAnn Rimes shot to stardom at the age of 13 with her hit song “Blue.” Grow ing up in the public eye took its toll on her, and she sought help years later for depression, anxiety and codependen cy. She’s much happier and healthier now, with husband/actor Eddie Cibri an (“Hot in Cleveland”) and stepsons Mason and Jake. She’s even made amends with Eddie’s ex-wife, Brandi Glanville (“Real Housewives of Bev erlyAfterHills”).taking a break from show busi ness during the isolating pandemic, Rimes is preparing to release a new album, “God’s Work,” on Sept. 16, and she’s already in the midst of her tour. Q:Is Mark Harmon ever coming back to “NCIS”? He was still featured in the opening credits last season, so it makes me think he’ll eventually return. — K.L. A:When we saw Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon, cast his fishing line into the chilly Alaskan waters on Oct. 11 of last year, it seemed like a permanent retirement for the character. That was just four episodes into the 19th season of “NCIS,” and he’s remained offscreen ever since — despite being in the opening credit sequence for the remain der of the season. CBS entertainment president Kelly Kahl explained to TVLine that sea son 19 was a “transition year for TV’s most watched drama,” but that it might not be the end for Gibbs. There’s a good chance he’ll be taken out of the credits for season 20, but that doesn’t mean he can’t pop back in for a guest appearance or more. Season 20 of “NCIS” will premiere on Sept. 19 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Send me your questions at New CelebrityExtra@gmail.com, or write me at KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

How to Litter Train a New Kitten DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m getting a new kitten from my neigh bor. His name is Striper, and he’s 10 weeks old. But I’m worried that he won’t know how to use the litter box. Once he moves in, how can I train him to use the litter box? — Kaley in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina DEAR KALEY: Once kittens are able to move around and explore, their moms teach them right away where and how to go. This is a survival skill: Cats hide their waste so that it’s harder for predators to find them and so their prey doesn’t know they’re around. However, you’ll need to make sure Striper knows where it’s appropriate for him to go. So, before he comes home with you, prepare for his arrival.

— Get to know his behaviors. Once you recognize Striper is about to go, you can pick him up and get him to the litter box. — Give him lots of praise when he uses the box and a little treat when he’s done.—If Striper still won’t use the box, try shifting it to a new location and show him where it is.
