DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter smokes. She doesn’t have COPD now, but last spring she had bronchitis and was off work for a week. When she went back to work, she didn’t feel good, and her doctor told her that she had pneumonia in both lungs and wondered why she went back to work. She still takes cough syrup under her doctor’s orders. — N.P. ANSWER: Getting someone to quit smoking is a challenge, but perhaps some advice I can give your daughter might help. The first piece of advice is that a cough necessitating cough syrup on a routine basis indeed might be a sign of COPD. There are two major forms of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The definition of “chronic bronchitis” is a productive cough for three months in each of two successive years.

The second piece of advice is that quitting before there are serious symptoms is the best time to quit. Although the body has some ability to recover from the effects of chronic cigarette smoke, there is a degree of permanent damage in long-term smokers. Quitting greatly slows down the rate of ongoing damage to the lungs and reduces the risk of having lifelong symptoms of shortness of breath and cough.

ANSWER: No. Calcium channel blockers, like amlodipine (Norvasc), work on cells in the heart and blood vessels, controlling the flow of calcium into the cell. Calcium in the cell is one of the regulators of smooth muscle cells, and for Norvasc in particular, that means its major effect is on blood vessels, causing them to open up and reduce blood pressure, and thus the amount of work the heart needs to do.

Calcium in bone is used structurally, where it combines with other ions to form hydroxyapatite, the mineral that keeps bones hard and strong. The mechanism for calcium entry into bone cells is very different. Calcium channel blockers do not affect mineralization of the bone, nor do they increase the risk for osteoporosis.

One group found that people on calcium channel blockers may have a slightly higher risk of fractures; however, that was thought to be due to an increased number of falls, especially in the elderly. Physicians need to take care not to use too much medication, especially ones that dilate blood vessels, as they can increase risk of dizziness and falls. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: Many readers kindly shared their recommendations about preventing underarm odor, and the most commonly mentioned, by far, was crystal mineral salt deodorants, of which there are several brands.

Several people made their own deodorants by mixing baking powder, cornstarch and olive or coconut oil. Other people noted using antibacterial soaps or cleansing products containing the same products we use in the operating room, such as chlorhexidine and hexachlorophene. A product with zinc oxide and talc helped one reader. Finally, more than a few people noted that removing all underarm hair was necessary to successfully get rid of odor.

Here’s the fun: 1. Lay a leaf on a smooth, clean work surface. Place paper over it and hold it down firmly so that it won’t move.

The pears I find in the grocery store are hard and green. Why? Pears are a unique fruit in that they ripen best off the tree.

As such, pears are transported when they’re fully mature, but not always ripe. This assures that pears you buy are in good condition to properly ripen at home after you buy them.

How can I keep cut pears from browning?

Browning, or oxidation, is a natural process that occurs when cut pears are exposed to oxygen. It can be slowed by “acidulating” the cut surfaces with a mild solution of 50% water and 50% lemon juice, which can either be brushed on or dipped in. Although this won’t completely stop the browning, it will provide you with a little extra time to enjoy your delicious fruit. You also can use nat-

How long will pears keep in the fridge?

Once they are ripened, pears will generally keep in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. Unripe fruit can generally be kept for a week or more, however, pears will not ripen properly inside the fridge.

You also can arrange them in a fruit bowl and place them on the kitchen counter, dining room table or even in the living room so you can enjoy their beauty as they ripen.

This recipe for Roasted Pears with Camembert Cheese and Chutney showcases this lovely fruit in a delicious new way.

ROASTED PEARS WITH CAMEMBERT CHEESE AND CHUTNEY Apple Cider, Raisin and Pecan Chutney 1/2 cup unsweetened pear or apple cider 1/4 cup honey or agave syrup 1 large shallot, minced 1/3 cup golden raisins 3/4 cup chopped roasted pecans 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary

teaspoons kosher salt, divided use 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/8 teaspoon allspice or ground cloves 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes Roasted Pears 3 large, ripe USA Pears, such as Concorde, Comice, or Green or Red Anjou 2 tablespoons olive oil 6 slices Camembert cheese 4 cups baby arugula leaves For the Chutney: Bring the cider, honey or agave syrup, shallot and raisins to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the mixture thickens, 10 to 15 minutes.

Off the heat, stir in the pecans, vinegar, rosemary, 1 teaspoon of the salt, 1/2 teaspoon of the black pepper, the allspice or ground cloves, and the cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.

Cool the chutney to room temperature before serving, or place in a container and cover with an air-tight lid and refrigerate up to 1 week.

To Roast the Pears: Heat oven to 375 F. Halve and core the pears and place in a baking dish. Rub them with 1 tablespoon of olive oil to lightly coat, and sprinkle all over with 1 teaspoon of salt. Position the pears cut sides down and roast about 30 minutes.

Turn them over and continue roasting until tender, 5 to 10 minutes more.

Lay a slice of Camembert on top of each and continue roasting just to melt the cheese, about 2 minutes.

To Serve: Toss the arugula with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil, and the remaining salt and ground black pepper, and divide among 6 salad plates. Place a warm pear half over each and top with a spoonful of the chutney. Serve immediately.

That’s why many homeowners rely on staging when selling their homes.

Staging requires more than just clearing out clutter or baking a batch of cookies to create a welcoming aroma. Staging helps potential buyers visualize the potential of a home and see themselves owning and living in the property.

While homeowners can effectively stage their own homes, sometimes it is well worth the investment to call in a professional designer or stager.

Stagers often work their magic on vacant properties or those that have been sitting on the market awhile.

A stager conducts careful research into the market of a particular area and learns about the neighborhood before deciding how to appeal to likely buyers. For example, when staging a coastal home, a stager may go with nautical themes and create the impression of a relaxing and laid-back property for entertaining by the beach.

Certain rules should be followed when staging a home. Furniture, decor and other amenities in the home should not detract from the house itself. Instead, such items should complement the architecture and feel of the space. Here are some additional staging suggestions.

• Remove personal effects.

Homeowners are urged to replace personal photographs with neutral artwork and remove other decorative items that reflect their personalities. As an example, an avid outdoorsman probably will want to remove hunting trophies. The goal is to help buyers see themselves in the home, and that can be difficult if existing residents’ personal effects are everywhere.

• Put away nonessential items.

Staging helps homeowners create dream spaces.

Coffeemakers, backpacks hanging on the wall and dishes in the drainboard may be part of daily living, but they can make it hard for buyers to see a home’s potential. Store such items before holding an open house.

• Maximize lighting. Whenever possible, take down or open window treatments to display architectural moldings and let in as much natural light as possible.

• Opt for neutral colors and furnishings. Use neutral taupe and gray paint to keep homes prime for buyers. Homeowners who have more eclectic or colorful tastes can put their items in storage and rent neutral furnishings until the home sells.

Various chores are synonymous with certain times of year. For example, cleaning a pool is a summertime task. In addition, rare is the instance that Mother Nature forces anyone to break out the snow shovels outside of winter.

Raking leaves has long been a task for fall afternoons, but homeowners may be surprised to learn that they might be better off putting their rakes in permanent mothballs.

In the 1990s, turfgrass specialists at Michigan State University began exploring the potential benefits of leaving mulched leaves on a lawn instead of raking them and leaving them for curbside pickup. While the researchers noticed an obvious leaf residue on the lawn after mulching, they noted that it only sticks around for a few days. Eventually, the tiny pieces sifted down into the lawn, ultimately serving to control future weed growth while also providing the lawn with essential nutrients. Over time, researchers noted that homeowners who mulched rather than raked their leaves needed less fertilizer to give their lawns a green look in spring, saving homeowners the effort and cost associated with fertilizing.

Researchers also noted that decomposing pieces of leaves cover up bare spots between turf plants, which have traditionally proven to be excellent spots for weed seeds to germinate. In fact, MSU notes that homeowners can expect a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelions and crabgrass after mulching leaves for just three years.

Depending on the type of mower being used, up to six inches of leaves can be mulched at a time. Push mowers can handle smaller amounts, though can still be as effective as ride-on mowers.

Fall may be synonymous with raking leaves. However, homeowners who want to give their lawns a healthy boost should consider putting their rakes away and mulching their leaves this fall.

What Is America’s Oldest Cemetery?

Many images are symbolic of Halloween. Witches riding broomsticks and ghosts gallivanting about haunted mansions are two such images.

Cemeteries also play a prominent role in setting the Halloween scene.

Halloween fans and history buffs may wonder where the oldest cemetery in the United States happens to be. That distinction belongs to the Myles Standish Burial Ground. Located on a residential street in Duxbury, Massachusetts, the Myles Standish Burial Ground is actually the nation’s oldest maintained cemetery, a designation bestowed upon it by the American Cemetery Association in 1976.

The cemetery is named after Myles Standish, the military leader of the Plymouth Colony. In fact, many voyagers from the Mayflower are buried in this ground, which began serving as a cemetery in 1638. Standish, who died in 1656, is among

those laid to rest here. Exhumations in the late nineteenth century confirmed the site was home to Standish’s remains, and a memorial to him that’s still standing today was subsequently built over his gravesite.

While it became a historic burial ground, the site was actually first used as Duxbury’s premier meeting house. Its use as cemetery lasted from 1638 to 1789. In fact, many of the burial markers were obscured for much of the nineteenth century. But an economic downturn sparked by the town’s loss of its shipbuilding industry led the town to rediscover its history. As a result, the Myles Standish Burial Ground became a focal point of efforts to attract tourists interested in colonial history. The ground continues to attract tourists today and is a must-see for Halloween and history enthusiasts alike.

But buying cars online, and often sight unseen, can be a risky proposition, and there are many reasons why buying new cars in person can benefit buyers.

• More than meets the eye: One of the more widely promoted websites that “sells” cars is TrueCar.com. Television ads for TrueCar® are ubiquitous, but viewers might not realize that TrueCar.com is essentially a network of auto dealerships in which member dealerships pay to obtain buyers’ contact information. That’s important information to know for buyers who want to buy a car online so they can cut out the “middleman” (i.e., dealerships).

• No surprises: Some online auto dealers promise delivery of the car.

That can seem especially convenient, but it’s always in buyers’ best interest to test drive cars before buying them.

That’s not always possible when buying vehicles online. While buyers may be able to return cars purchased online after they have been delivered, that can be inconvenient, negating what many feel is the single biggest benefit to buying a car online. When

buying cars they have already driven in person, buyers won’t be surprised when getting behind the wheel.

• Savings: Online dealerships may market themselves as more buyerfriendly than traditional dealerships, but such claims should be taken with a grain of salt. Cranston, RI – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island (BBBSRI) uses their fleet of iconic trucks to collect the community’s donations of bagged clothing and boxed household items to fund their local youth mentoring programs. The free and convenient curbside pick-up can be accessed by visiting DonateRI.org or by calling 401.921.2434 and speaking to a representative at BBBSRI’s locally staffed Donation Center Headquarters in Cranston. Along with 6 trucks offering free curbside pick-up, BBBSRI also maintains over 100 clothing donation bins and 4 drop off centers, which provide a lifeblood to the agency and over 30 other local non-profits. These include local schools, churches, veteran's organizations, and 8 YMCAs throughout the state.

According to BBBSRI Executive Director, Katje Afonseca, BBBS has been operating their donation center since 1997 when then, Executive Director, Bonny Sevelin embarked on a contract with Savers to provide consistent, sustainable funding for their local youth mentoring programs in return for the collection of gently used clothing and small household items. Each year, BBBSRI diverts between 6.5 and 8.4 million pounds of clothing and household items from Rhode Island landfills. Through this process, BBBS creates a funding stream for its mentoring programs, which have supported thousands of youth in Rhode Island.

“We have offered free home pickups to Rhode Island residents for more than 20 years.” said Afonseca.

“It is surprising to see for-profit companies both in our state and from out of state who are just beginning to offer home picks ups state that this is a new service to Rhode Islanders.”

BBBSRI has begun to see a slight decline in donations and wonders if this is due to for-profit and out of state, curbside pickup services that have thrown their hat into the ring of “textile recycling”.

The BBBSRI Donation Center understands that customer service, and ease of use, is a top priority in the cloth collection business. That’s why BBBSRI not only offers free home pickups, but has more than 100 clothing collection bins throughout the state as well 4 drop off centers. BBBSRI was named Best ‘Nonprofit’ Place to Work in 2019 by Providence Business News. “Not only do we offer a convenient way to donate used clothing and household items, we value the 50+ employees who work at BBBSRI and know that by making this a great place to work, our drivers, attendants and all team members will provide top notch service to our customers.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than 84 percent of old clothes, shoes, belts, handbags and textile items end up in a landfill or an incinerator. On average, that adds up to about 85 pounds of textile items per person each year. As a result, textiles make up more than 6 percent of all the residential and municipal trash in the country.

BBBSRI shares profits from its donation bins with other nonprofits, said Afonseca. There are a number of other bins from for-profit organizations around, and no one is saying those companies shouldn’t also be allowed to collect items, she said, but it’s important to be on equal footing.

BBBSRI partners with Savers, selling items to the secondhand store and using the money to cover the overhead of running the nonprofit. That means direct monetary donations go directly to the organization’s work of providing mentors to the youth of Rhode Island. Weather is often the first indicator that the seasons are changing. For many people across the globe, the hot days of summer will soon be giving way to the more crisp days of fall.

For those who live in regions where summer only subtly gives way to fall or is seemingly gone before the end of August, the 2019 autumnal equinox occurs on September 23. That marks the official beginning of fall, also known as autumn. In fact, that the season the follows summer seemingly goes by two different names is just one of many interesting facts about fall.

• A season by any other name … Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox.

• The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round.

However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes

place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

• Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know.

Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache.

Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried.

• Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895.

They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.

I usually don’t watch “American Horror Story.” It’s way too dark and gory for me, but I have to admit I’m intrigued by the ad campaign for the new season. It looks like the horror movies I watched in the ‘80s, like “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween.” — C.P. The ninth season of “American Horror Story” just premiered on the FX channel and is titled “AHS: 1984.” It is indeed set in the ‘80s and takes place at a summer camp. The trailer showed a masked, knife-wielding slasher hitching a ride on the undercarriage of a truck carrying teens on their way to camp. I’m pretty sure you can figure out what happens next.

This installment features “AHS” regulars Emma Roberts, Leslie Grossman, and Billie Lourd, but the most surprising bit of casting is Olympic silver medalist-turned-actor Gus Kenworthy.

This is his sixth acting role since competing in the Winter Games in 2018. *** I heard that Chris March from “Project Runway” died. I lost interest in the show after a few seasons, but he was one of my favorite designers to compete. Did he achieve any success as a designer after the reality series ended? — J.F. You might not have heard, but Chris March suffered a terrible fall in 2017 and wasn’t discovered for several days. He had sustained a head injury, was put into a medically induced coma and awoke to find he was paralyzed in several limbs. His death this year at the age of 56 was the result of a heart attack.

Before such a tragic ending, March found success as a designer. While he didn’t win his season of “Project Runway,” he went on to design for several big stars like Beyonce and Chrissy Teigen. He even designed the gown that Meryl Streep wore to the Oscars in 2010. He will be greatly missed. *** Is it true they’re making another “Dark Shadows” movie? Will Johnny Depp be in it again? — G.M.

“Dark Shadows” was a daytime TV soap opera with a gothic theme that aired 50 years ago and starred Jonathan Frid as a vampire named Barnabas Collins. A primetime version aired in 1991 starring Ben Cross in the same role, and then a motion picture version starring Depp was in theaters in 2012. While there are no plans for a sequel to the film, the CW network recently announced that a TV series is in the works titled “Dark Shadows: Reincarnation.”

Mark B. Perry (“Revenge”) is writing the pilot. According to Deadline.com, Perry used to race home from school each day to watch the original “Dark Shadows.” He’s also a huge “Star Trek” fan and plans to treat “Dark Shadows: Reincarnation” with “the same reverence given to ‘Star Trek,’ while making the show accessible for audiences who aren’t familiar with the macabre world of the Collinses.”
