DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, I caught my uncle and aunt feeding our King Charles Spaniel, Doogie, food from their plates after Thanksgiving dinner and pouring wine into a dish for him. As you know, holiday feasts have rich, fatty foods with ingredients that are bad for dogs, like onion, garlic, avocado and chocolate. Fortunately, Doogie only suffered a bit of indigestion. This year, I added a list of rules to the Thanksgiving invitation, including: Do not feed the dog; do not leave plates where Doogie can reach them; do not give alcohol to the dog; do not let Doogie out of his kennel. My uncle and aunt posted the list on Facebook and said the rules are the reason they will not come this year. They’re trying to shame me for protecting my dog. Some of our other relatives commented on the post and said they might not come because of the rules, either. What would you do? — Carole & Chuck in Marietta, Georgia

DEAR CAROLE & CHUCK: I’m no master of etiquette, but I can speak on this issue: The welfare of your pet comes first.

Dogs will not turn down yummy food, especially if it’s bad for them. Dogs don’t know alcohol is bad for them. Many dogs don’t know how to handle the stress of a sudden crowd of strangers in the house. Dogs will react badly to inconsiderate handling. Dogs will take advantage of your distraction to reach abandoned plates and countertops laden with deliciousness.

Your rules about Doogie are reasonable. You can respond to the post calmly with your side of the story, and let the other relatives decide for themselves what to do. Best of luck.

Car Repairs Not To Try At Home

(NAPS)—When it comes to taking care of cars, all those countless “do it yourself” videos make it all seem so straightforward and easy. So, too many people take matters into their own hands, only to realize a er they’ve taken everything apart, only a trusted mechanic can x the problem.

As cars are becoming more advanced, it’s important to visit your automotive repair shop for professional car care. Here’s a list of seemingly simple but actually complex repairs you shouldn’t try at home.

Simple Maintenance and Repairs:

• Brake Fluid Flush: Without proper equipment, home mechanics will not be able to get all the old brake uid out of the system. Car owners might accidentally put power steering uid in the brake uid reservoir, potentially causing a complete failure of the entire braking system, requiring thousands of dollars to repair.

• Coolant Flush: Similarly, without proper chemicals and equipment, car owners can’t remove built-up residue and deposits, leaving behind old coolant. Additionally, home mechanics might not know the correct mix of antifreeze and water, causing the system to be at the incorrect freezing or boiling point. Car owners might also put ordinary tap water in the system, causing excessive corrosion.

• Fuel Injector Cleaning: Most products sold in auto parts stores are meant to be added to the gas tank and do not provide proper cleaning. A professional auto repair team, such as the ones at Meineke, will clean the carbon deposits from the throttle body and intake/exhaust valves, improving engine performance and fuel economy.

Moderately Complex Repairs: • Brakes: Few things are more alarming than brake failure. In fact, brake maintenance may be the most important service in terms of safety. A good brake job doesn’t just require resurfacing rotors and drums but also properly oiling key components to avoid excessive wear and noise. And failure to tighten all bolts can result

in unexpected brake failure if they loosen. With the complexity of the modern car, it’s better to visit a shop that is equipped with the special tools and diagnostic equipment needed for maintaining your brakes.

• Suspension Work: Vehicle suspension systems are complex and many components have signi cant spring tension. A professional will make sure spring tension is properly secured, limiting the possibility of serious damage to your vehicle.

• Battery Replacement in Hybrid or Electric Vehicles: Not only could an incorrect replacement cause engine or drive train damage that could cost thousands to repair, disposal of the old batteries may also be an environmental hazard.

• Air Conditioning Systems: Attempting to recharge a system using cans of refrigerant available at auto parts stores could overcharge it, leading to catastrophic failure and costing thousands to x. Additionally, refrigerant could leak into the atmosphere, contributing to environmental issues.

Where To Get Help

Whether a vehicle needs seemingly simple maintenance or moderately complex repairs, car owners should visit an automotive repair shop for professional car care. And with the recent chip crisis a ecting the supply of new cars at dealerships, technicians at car care centers such as Meineke can help prevent further damage and extend the life of your car.

• Mr. Leger owns a Meineke Car Care Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

Vehicles today are too complex for most drivers to do their own repairs. Fortunately, there are plenty of professionals at Meineke Car Care Centers in Louisville and around Kentucky who can help. Learn more, including where to nd nearby shops, at www. meineke.com.

e good news is homeownership can be much closer than you think. Lisa Frison, Head of Financial Inclusion and Racial Equity at Citi, recalls that growing up her parents rented their home for years before eventually becoming rst-time homebuyers. “Even so, I found myself struggling to understand what I needed to do and what resources were available to me when I was ready to buy my rst home nearly a decade later,” she says. Here Frison debunks these Top 5 Myths to help you get on track to building generational wealth through homeownership.

2. I Don’t Have Enough Money Saved. You may have more money than you think. Many banks o er programs for new homebuyers that do not require mortgage insurance for those qualifying. Also, HomeRun has some mortgages for as little as 3% down, with a minimum 1% borrower contribution. is, along with the bank’s Lender Paid Assistance, which provides up to $7,500 closing cost funds that do not need to be paid back, saves qualifying borrowers thousands of dollars in closing costs, helping them a ord more house. ese programs are o ered only in select markets and have income limitations.

3. I Should Start House Hunting with a Realtor. It seems logical to begin with a real estate

4. I Earn Too Much to Qualify for Assistance. Lender assistance programs may be more expansive than you think, especially in response to in ation and rising home prices. For example, Citi has increased lending assistance to borrowers with income up to 120% of median income—up from 80% of the median local income. e bank’s loan ocers can tell customers where their income is relative to the local median family income and also whether a property is located in an eligible census tract.

5. I Should Keep Renting Because I Missed the Market and Now I’m Priced Out. Firsttime or a ordable homebuyer programs can help you get on the path to buying a home you can a ord. Easygoing Spice Blend Is Great for Goodies and Gifting

Here’s a quick recipe for easy homemade gingerbread spice mix, the perfect addition to your holiday repertoire. If pumpkin spice is the flavor of autumn, then gingerbread spice has to be the spice blend of winter. The ingredients are similar, but the balance of the spices yields a completely different result.

Gingerbread spice can replace cinnamon in most recipes and is wonderful added to hot chocolate, coffee or chai tea. If nothing else, sprinkle it with sugar on hot buttered toast.

GINGERBREAD SPICE BLEND

Yield: 1/3 cup Total Time: 5 minutes

2 tablespoons cinnamon

2 tablespoons ground ginger

1 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice

1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1/4 teaspoon finely ground pepper

Blend all ingredients together. Store in an airtight container. Please note this stuff is potent! Th-thth-th that’s all folks!

Now, what do we do with all this holiday goodness?

GINGERBREAD CREAM CHEESE

Yield:1 1/2 cups Total Time: 5 minutes

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup chopped pecans

1/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries

2 tablespoons crystallized ginger

2 tablespoons maple syrup

1/2 teaspoon gingerbread spice

With a hand mixer, soften cream cheese until fluffy then add remaining ingredients, mixing until incorporated. Schmear on bagels.

SHORTCUT GINGERBREAD SNICKERDOODLE COOKIES

Yield: 16 cookies

Total Time: 30 minutes

1 (16.5 ounce) tube refrigerated sugar cookie dough

1/3 cup molasses

1/4 cup flour

Mix cookie dough with molasses, flour, ginger and gingerbread spice.

Roll tablespoonful-size balls of dough in cinnamon and place 2 inches apart on parchment-lined baking sheets.

Bake at 350 F for 16 to 18 minutes or until set around the edges.

2 tablespoons granulated sugar + more for topping

2 teaspoons gingerbread spice

Preheat oven to 425 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pulse gingersnap cookies, butter, cocoa powder, ginger, sugar and gingerbread spice in a food processor to make a paste. Unfold a sheet of puff pastry and spread the paste on the opened sheet. Fold the two opposite sides of the pastry in to meet in the middle, then fold into the middle again. Sprinkle generously with sugar. Slice crosswise into 1/4-inch pieces. Bake 12 to 14 minutes (pictured).

GINGERBREAD MONKEY BREAD

Yield: 12 servings Total Time: 1 hour 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon gingerbread spice 2 (7.5 ounce) cans refrigerated biscuits 1 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup butter

1 sheet from a (17.3) ounce package

frozen puff pastry, thawed

2 gingersnap cookies, the cheap ones

1/4 cup diced butter

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

2 tablespoons crystallized ginger, diced

(NAPSI)—Statistics show that the incidence of home res and electrical accidents typically increases during the winter holiday season. To combat this, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is launching its annual holiday safety campaign by providing tips to help consumers prevent household res and accidents caused by improper cooking, heating, and holiday decorating practices.

\“According to the National Fire Protection Association, 860 home res are caused by holiday decorations, while an additional 210 home res are caused by Christmas trees per year,” said ESFI President Brett Brenner. “Taking preventative measures when cooking, heating, and decorating can help prevent res while you enjoy this festive time of year.” e organization’s website, holidaysafety.org, o ers a variety of free-to-share resources that can be shared with your family, your workplace, and throughout your community. Follow

these steps to help ensure your safety during the winter holidays:

Decorating Safety

• Twenty- ve percent of holiday res are caused by electrical decorations. Never leave these on while sleeping or away from home.

• When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness and be sure to water your tree daily until it’s properly disposed of.

•Never leave an open ame, including the replace or candles, unattended.• Keep young children and pets away from holiday lights, electrical decorations, and extension cords to prevent injuries.

• Use electrical decorations and lights only for their labeled purpose, indoor or outdoor. Don’t use indoor decorations outside, as water and electricity should never mix.

• Keep all decorations three feet away from heat sources.• Carefully inspect decorations before use. Cracked or frayed sockets, loose or bare wires, and loose connections may cause a shock or start a re.

• Use only electrical decorations and lights that have been approved for safe use by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

• Avoid plugging too many decorations into a single outlet. Overloaded outlets can overheat and cause res.

• Ensure cords are not pinched in doors, windows, under heavy furniture, or rugs that could damage the cord and cause a re.

• Always unplug decorations using the gripping area. Pulling on the cord could damage the wire and present a shock or re hazard.

Heating Safety

• Replace worn or old heating pads and electric blankets. Look for dark, charred, or frayed spots or cracked or frayed electric cords.

• Do not allow anything on top of a heating pad or electric blanket when it is in use. It may cause the device to overheat.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from heat sources.

• Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn o when leaving a room or sleeping.

• Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip, as this could cause the cords to overheat and cause a re.

• Never use a cooking stove to heat your home or dry clothes.

• Place space heaters on level, at surfaces on the ground.

• Have a quali ed service pro-

•Never

Cooking Safety

• Keep anything that can catch re away from your stove top.

• Always unplug countertop appliances when not in use.

• Double-check that everything is o when you nish cooking.

• Prevent res by keeping your oven and stove top clean of grease and dust.

• Never leave the kitchen while cooking.

• Never cook while tired, drinking alcohol, or taking medication that makes you drowsy.

• Never disable a smoke alarm while cooking.

• Children should be closely supervised and kept at least three feet away from all cooking appliances.

• –Keep anything that can catch re away from your stove top.

• On Dec. 24, 1945, a fire destroyed the home of George and Jennie Sodder and their nine children in Fayetteville, West Virginia. While their parents and four other siblings escaped, no sign of the remaining five children has ever been found, despite decades-long publicity and numerous investigations by both law enforcement and amateur sleuths.

• On Dec. 22, 1956, a baby western gorilla named Colo debuted on the world stage at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio, where she would spend her entire life, becoming the first-ever gorilla born in captivity. Upon her death in 2017, she was also the oldest known gorilla in the world.

• On Dec. 20, 1957, Elvis Presley received his Army draft notice while spending the holiday season at his newly purchased mansion, Graceland. Distraught fans sent thousands of letters to the Army asking for him to be spared, but Elvis himself had no hesitation about entering, though he did receive a deferment that allowed him to finish work on the movie “King Creole.”

• On Dec. 21, 2006, rebel monks at the centuries-old Esphigmenou Monastery in Thessaloniki, Greece, took up crowbars and fire extinguishers to repel church-appointed monks with sledgehammers attempting to break in. The rebels vehemently opposed efforts by the Orthodox church to improve relations with the Vatican.

• On Dec. 25, 2013, military defense forces discovered a professionally designed but incomplete 40-meter tunnel connecting Hong King to China that included rail tracks, hanging lamps, ventilators and a small transport cart. Authorities believed the tunnel, which cost an estimated $494,000, was created with the intention of smuggling goods into Hong Kong to avoid tariffs.

A grand entryway simply wouldn't be complete without an impressive front door. A front door can dazzle guests and create a homeowner's desired vibe before anyone even steps inside, which only underscores how important the choice of door style can be. When shopping around for a new front door for their homes, homeowners can consider the many popular styles as they seek to choose one that ts an existing scheme or use a new front door as a springboard to a redesigned home interior.

· Farmhouse: Farmhouse doors are not all one and the same. Traditional farmhouse doors provide a rustic look that's become popular in home decor over the last decade or so. Modern farmhouse doors are a little less rustic because they incorporate more contemporary elements into their design. Each option is ideal for homeowners who aspire to create a farmhouse vibe in their home interiors and exteriors.

]· Modern: Modern front doors tend to boast a bold look and many are made up of large glass panels. Some

homeowners prefer modern front doors because the glass in them allows lots of natural light into their home's interior. e added light in the entryway appeals to homeowners who want to brighten up these spaces, which tend to be dark in homes with more traditional doors.

· Traditional: Traditional front doors may be the most recognizable to today's homeowners. O en solid wood but sometimes enhanced with glass, traditional doors may feature subtle, yet ornate designs. Traditional front doors might feel out of place in modern or rustic homes, so they're generally best suited to homes with owners that prefer more traditional decor inside their homes.

· Custom: It's important that homeowners recognize they need not pigeonhole themselves into a particular design style for their front doors. Custom front doors may be costly, but many door manufacturers or contractors customize front doors. Custom doors may suit homeowners' with unique ideas about decor, and some can even mimic other popular styles while still featuring subtle di erences. For example, homeowners can request an arched double door that, while unique, features many of the same qualities that characterize traditional doors, including ornate designs.

A front door can greatly in uence the rst impression people get of a home. at makes it worth homeowners' time and e ort to explore the many di erent front door styles now available.

(NAPSI)—With record-high real estate prices, a growing number of homeowners are remodeling or renovating their existing homes rather than buying new. Increased demand and continued supply chain issues, however, have led to delays in getting quotes, uncertainties in the availability of materials, rising costs and an increase in homeowner frustration.  Whether you’re looking at a new roof or siding, adding a deck, upgrading windows or insulation, you want to nd a contractor who gets it right on the rst try (and can meet today’s fast-turn demand).

What To Ask To help, here are three important questions to ask potential contractors so you can nd the right resource in a challenging environment:

1.“Do I need to meet with you in person to get a quote?”

Contractors have followed the same manual transaction processes for decades. But home visits with pad-andpaper estimating is outdated, especially with digital-savvy homeowners.

Today, roo ng, fencing and even siding companies can provide a preliminary quote without sending representatives to your house. Satellite measurements and a quick phone call are all you need to understand basic pricing and inventory availability for shingles, siding or lumber. Digital sales platforms help homeowners quickly compare contractors and reduce the time to get multiple estimates.

2.“How soon can you start?” How quickly a contractor can begin depends on pricing and availability of labor and

materials. Be wary of contractors who o er services for unbelievably low prices—it’s safer to pay more for a premium, professional job than take a gamble on a risky contractor.  Top contractors will prepare a digital estimate, taking current pricing into account. Using dynamic tools, your contractor should be able to make real-time changes to estimates and contracts to show how the materials selected will in uence the schedule and cost. Similarly, such contractors will have access to real-time inventory via a mobile device so you can choose products, such as shingles, that are actually available, reducing delays.

3.“How do you handle changes?”

is is another area where a contractor using a digital sales platform can add value. By plugging in di erent options, your contractor should be able to tell you exactly how changes will a ect cost and timing. No need to wait days for a return phone call—using digital documents means a revised quote and contract can be sent quickly, helping to keep projects moving.

Don't you notice the change in the air that comes only this time of year?

e Christmas season is like no other, and nowhere is it more special than in the Pawtuxet Valley.

Not only from the perspective of the holiday lights and decorations everywhere, including the spectacular presentation at the home of Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi, but also from the common conversations that we have with friends and strangers throughout the Valley. It just seems like those conversations are a little more friendly and a little more engaging and polite.

Growing up in the Arctic section of West Warwick, I could not have asked for a better childhood, lled with Christmas memories that some of you might remember, or at least cause you to recall some of your own memories of Warwick.

A few that stand out are:

• Sidewalk Santa on his perch on Washington Street in Arctic welcoming throes of shoppers that clogged Arctic from Town Hall to Kostyla’s gas

station.

• Going to Veterans Square Diner for the best “tourtier” (pork pie) in the country, but of course hearing Jules, Sammy and Dicky swear that they’ll never make them again because it was “too much work!”

• Laughing at the drunks fresh from their stool at the bar standing in the back of the church and belting out the Christmas hymns at midnight mass.

• Going to the Donut Kettle with the hope of having a holiday sip of whiskey in the kitchen with Dotsy Proulx and your dad.

• Visiting Memere and Pepe re’s house in Coventry and getting twenty- ve cents every time you brought Uncle Henry a fresh beer.

• Seeing all the streets and houses lit up with decorations and noticing people happy to see each other, seemingly for the rst time.

• Volunteering for one of the many community organizations that brough holiday dinners and toys to the kids from

disadvantaged families.

• And driving through town on Christmas morning to see the dreamlike serenity that was cast over the village and wondering why the holiday spirit couldn’t last year-round.

Unfortunately, most of the places and sadly too many of our relatives and friends are gone.

But every year we are blessed with new memories of events that bring us back in time, or at least relish that fact that some of our traditions and values have endured, like the time last year when I was sitting at the bar at the Cowesett Inn and having a grand old holiday time with holiday-regulars that seem to pop in every Christmas.

While talking to a nice middle-aged couple next to me and explaining the history of West Warwick (they didn’t know and I didn’t tell them that I was a former West Warwick Mayor) and its important relationship with Warwick, having been part of Warwick until Patrick Quinn and the boys led a successful drive to form their own Town and of course their own government in 1913, I turned around to say hi to someone who tapped me on the back.

When I looked back to continue the conversation with the couple, I saw that their food had arrived and then what happened was the best Christmas event that I could ever imagine.

e couple bowed, joined hands, and said a so prayer of thanks to the Lord. at moment will forever be embedded in my Christ-

mas thoughts.

A simple act of forgotten grace that is no longer common in our world.

It’s a simple reminder that Christmas is not about places or food or decorations, but about family, faith and community.

It’s a season so powerful and important that it is celebrated all over the world

Not just in Christian countries but in countries that you would least expect.

As a frequent traveler to the Middle East, it was heartwarming to see their malls and stores decorated with Christmas splendor.

In their religion, Christ is still celebrated as an important prophet. ey also respect our beliefs.

I am proud to have been raised in the “Valley”, where immigrant families came to provide a better life for the children.

Our history is alive with stories of the Italians, Irish, French-Canadian and Portuguese families, among others, working in the mills along the Pawtuxet River to the unmistakable clicks and hum o he warping machines.

We have so much to be thankful for.

From the Levesque family home in Buttonwoods to yours, a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

(NAPSI)—While the holiday season is generally a time of joy and celebration, military families can o en experience a very di erent range of emotions. Active service members and veterans returning home for the holidays might struggle to participate in family gatherings or even nd the season particularly distressing. And, for the families of those service members who do not return, the holidays can be an agonizing reminder of a loved one’s absence.

In the spirit of the season, honoring the sacri ce of all men and women who proudly served in our armed forces through charitable giving can make a big di erence. Children of Fallen Patriots, a foundation that honors the sacri ces of fallen military heroes by helping ensure the success of their children through college education, has outlined several ways

that showcase how charitable giving ensures strong futures.

Support Veteran-Serving Organizations

Tens of thousands of non-pro ts exist in the United States dedicated to serving veterans and their families. With so many di erent veteran-serving organizations in the States, it’s crucial to ensure donations are doing the most good for heroes in need.

A good way to evaluate an organization is to use Charity Navigator, a renowned nonpro t evaluation site.

e site rates charities on the cost-effectiveness and overall health of their programs on a four-star scale, evaluating their measures of stability, eciency, and sustainability.

Care for Military Families in Need Service members sel essly put their own lives on the line to ensure

better lives for all Americans, but their families sacri ce much as well. While many organizations o er support directly to veterans, the family back home can get lost in the shu e.  Children of Fallen Patriots provides college scholarships and educational counseling to military children who lost a parent in the line of duty. Studies show that almost 25,000 children have lost a parent in the line of duty over the last 35 years. A college education is a signi cant nancial burden, and the majority of surviving military spouses make less than $50,000 annually.

Since 2002, Children of Fallen Patriots has provided over $61 million in support to over 2,700 children, including over 1,300 graduates. Additionally, the Gold Star family-focused nonpro t earned a perfect rating from Charity Navigator—an accomplishment less than 1% of the 200,000 rated charities have earned.

“ e best way to honor the sacrice of our service members is to ensure better futures for their children,” said David Kim, co-founder and CEO of Children of Fallen Patriots. “A college education is the single most important gi we can give to the children of our fallen heroes, especially during the holiday season—a particularly di cult and stressful time for Gold Star families.”

Generosity Goes Beyond e Wallet

Making a donation is one of the easiest ways to support veteran-serving organizations, but plenty of options exist.

More and more people give their time by coordinating fundraising events, such as bake sales and 5k runs. ey also spread the word on social media so the country’s veteran community is supported and speak up about the issues that adversely a ect them.

Calculating Required Minimum Distributions from

Plans to Change in 2022

As the year comes to an end and we celebrate with our family and friends, it’s important to ensure that you have complied with any Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from your IRA or retirement plan. Failing to take out the RMD can result in a 50% penalty! That is not a typo, 50%! Read on for more important changes.

The IRS has issued new Life Expectancy Tables for 2022. (IRS, 2021) Every individual subject to annual Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) will be affected. Whether someone is taking lifetime RMDs from their own IRA or taking RMDs on an inherited account, the RMD calculation will change. While most custodians will automatically implement the new tables and make the necessary adjustments internally, it is important for advisors, IRA owners and plan participants to understand the mechanics of these changes. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the account owner to take out the proper Required Minimum Distribution.

After more than a year of waiting, the finalized [Life Expectancy] tables finally went into effect on January 1, 2022.

The Three Tables, despite the recent drop in overall life expectancy due to the pandemic, on average and over time, life expectancies have increased. Due to this increase, the IRS believed it was time to update the existing tables, which have been in effect for two decades. Note that the new tables do not reflect drastic changes. The boost in life expectancy factors range from no change for the oldest Americans up to an increase of 2.2 years for a newborn. Nevertheless, these slight

alterations to the tables will result in somewhat smaller RMDs for just about everyone.

All three RMD life expectancy tables were revised: (IRS, 2021)

1. Uniform Lifetime Table: Used to calculate lifetime RMDs for an account owner’s own IRA or retirement plan.

2. Joint (and Last Survivor) Life Expectancy Table: Used instead of the Uniform Lifetime Table when a spouse is the sole IRA or plan beneficiary, and that spouse is more than 10 years younger than the IRA owner or plan participant.

3. Single Life Expectancy Table: Under the SECURE Act, only used to calculate post-death RMDs for “eligible designated beneficiaries” (i.e., surviving spouse; minor child of the account owner/participant; chronically ill or disabled individual; those beneficiaries who are not more than 10 years younger than the owner/ participant). The Single Life Expectancy Table is also used if an IRA owner dies after the required beginning date (RBD) (April 1 of the year following the year the IRA owner turns age 72) without naming a living beneficiary, i.e., the “ghost rule.” Additionally, this table is used to calculate annual RMDs from inherited IRAs for beneficiaries who inherited prior to the SECURE Act in 2020.

The Single Life Table is never used by IRA owners or plan participants to calculate lifetime required distributions. The new tables may also be used to calculate 72(t) periodic payments. Under the Internal Revenue Code 72(t) an individual is allowed to withdraw money from pretax accounts prior to the age of 59 and ½ without the 10% early withdrawal penalty. The payments must stay in place for a minimum of 5 years or until the individual becomes 59 ½, whichever is longer. These payments can be calculated in different ways, annuitization, amortization and required minimum distribution, from this chart. It is important to work

with an advisor that has experience calculating these payments.

The easiest change to implement is for those account owners taking lifetime RMDs based on the Uniform Lifetime Table. The Uniform Lifetime Table is a “recalculating” table. This means that each year a person will go back to the table to find his age and corresponding life expectancy factor. This new factor is then divided into the December 31 account balance from the previous year to compute the RMD. Since those individuals using the Uniform Lifetime Table are recalculating every year, identifying the appropriate number is straightforward; just go to the chart based on your age as of December 31st of the RMD year.

The former RMD age rule was your first year of distribution was based on your age 70 and 1/2, now it is the year you turn 72. Congress finally dropped off the ½ year.

Those individuals That had, or will have, their 72nd birthday in 2022 will have their first RMD due for 2022. However, the first RMD is permitted to be delayed until April 1 of the following year. Any first-time RMD taker who delays the initial RMD to the following year must take two RMDs in that following year. (IRS, 2021)

As always, I recommend that you work with an experienced financial advisor when dealing with your retirement

planning and IRA/retirement plan distribution options. Special thanks to the Ed Slott and Company, LLC CPAs that provided a great deal of this very technical content.

Holiday lights are now everywhere come the holiday season. Private homeowners tend to hang the holiday lights outside their homes around anksgiving weekend and keep them up through New Year’s Day. ough it might seem like a tradition without a deep history, decorating a Christmas tree with electric lights can be traced all the way back to the nineteenth century. In 1882, Edward Johnson, who was a friend and colleague of the man who invented light bulbs, omas Edison, replaced candles, which had traditionally been used to brie y light Christmas trees, with light bulbs. But at the time of Johnson’s innovation, the high cost and relative infancy of light bulbs ensured the idea did not catch on. And though United States President Grover

Cleveland used electric lights to illuminate a Christmas tree in the White House in 1895, it would be another eight years before General Electric would begin selling Christmas light kits. ose kits cost $12 in 1903, which equates to several hundred dollars today. e rst outdoor Christmas light shows started to become popular in the 1920s, and this is the same time when commercial sales of Christmas lights picked up. In the 1960s, GE’s decision to begin manufacturing Christmas lights overseas helped reduce the price of outdoor lights even further, thus paving the way for the tradition of decorating home exteriors with string lights during the holiday season to take a rm hold. And that tradition remains wildly popular today.
