How to Choose Behavioral Health Services

Ask the Local Produce Expert — Dave’s Marketplace

From substance abuse to psychiatric illness, more than one third of the population will experience a psychological difficulty at some point in their life. If you or someone you love is in such a situation, you may want to seek help from qualified professionals. Children, teens and adults alike can benefit from behavioral health care. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for help with a behavioral health issue.

Summer is here, and if you’re looking for the freshest fruits, vegetables, and locally grown produce, now is the time to find them at Dave’s Marketplace. In Rhode Island and throughout New England, many local farms raise fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs for neighborhood markets. These growers are dedicated to the quality and value of fresh food for their living. “We are in the perishable business – we want you to feel and smell how fresh everything is,” said Susan Budlong of Dave’s Marketplace. “We set this stage by having customers walk through our Produce departments first and foremost.” Picked at their peak, locally grown foods taste and look better, and with shorter times between the farm and table, it’s less likely that nutrients will be lost. Nearby farms often grow different varieties of crops to provide a longer harvest season and the best flavors. “Locally grown produce is generally only available about 12 to 14 weeks of the year,” said Budlong, who wants customers to know what they are eating. “We work hard to provide accurate signage for all our products – especially produce, seafood and meats.” Not only is local food safe and convenient, farmers and grocers who sell their products aren’t anonymous and take their responsibility to the consumer seriously. Locally produced food also supports communities, preserves open spaces and benefits the environment. “Our prepared foods are made either in our central commissary in East Greenwich or on site in our In Store Kitchens. All the meals are made with fresh ingredients – local ingredients whenever possible – and by hand,” said Budlong. “It really is better than restaurant quality.

Competent and prompt assessment • How soon a person gets treatment after the onset of a psychological problem can have a major impact in determining the outcome. Assessment by a qualified mental health professional is very important in connecting the patient with necessary services. Look for a center offering emergency evaluations if you or your loved one are in acute distress. Flexibility • The best behavioral health centers do not use a onesize fits all approach to helping people. They understand needs vary greatly from person to person, depending on the diagnosis. Look for a center that is part of a system offering a wide range of treatments. A competent initial evaluation will determine the recommended level of care. At one end of the spectrum, there is short-term outpatient care usually oneon-one counseling with or without the addition of medication. At the other end of the spectrum is long-term inpatient care in a hospital setting.

with a myriad of problems that are more likely to be solved with a multidisciplinary approach. The best facilities create teams of professionals who work with individuals on different aspects of their problem. Family involvement • The prospects of success improve dramatically when families are involved in the treatment process. Family can provide additional history that can be crucial in understanding the psychological condition and formulating the correct diagnosis and treatment plan. Also family offers an important support for the patient in obtaining the necessary services and maintaining compliance with treatment. Some behavioral health issues involve emotional and stressful family situations. It is important to get the whole family into treatment to learn how to change maladaptive or destructive dynamics. Emotional and mental issues never affect just one person. All the people affected can be involved in supporting the right health solution. Ongoing services • Ongoing, continuing care is essential for a large number of behavioral health issues. Many cases require initial intense treatment followed by a longer period of continuing care. Successfully following the long term recommendations will lead to a full recovery.

Team approach A good behavioral health center arranges for ongoing care • Psychiatry has often been viewed as a solitary one-on- tailored to each client's needs with individual therapy, mediLOPUC-AD.qxp_Layout 1 8/4/16 10:10 AM Page 1 one approach, but in reality behavioral health deals cation management, group therapy or family therapy.

We follow strict recipes for consistent quality measures – so what you purchase in Warwick, you can purchase in Wickford and have the same great taste!” Larger supermarket chains often do not cook or prepare meals on site using locally grown foods; most products are prepackaged in another facility and trucked in. Same with many other perishable products – chains have moved away from providing custom cut roasts, or handcut swordfish – many do not staff butchers, fishmongers, or chefs with the experience of handling locally grown or harvested products. “We like food, we enjoy buying it, selling it, preparing, and experimenting with it. We learned early on that food brings people together; it brings families together and it brings our communities together. Our families over the past 20 years have been hurried – sitting down to dinner isn’t the norm anymore,” said Budlong. “We strive to be part of every meal. To do that, we produce as many high quality foods – many of them comfort foods – that will allow you to enjoy dinner. And know that the food has been prepared fresh, with high quality ingredients. The quality and ingredients you would use if you made it yourself.” Shopping is a personal experience for most people, and while times are changing and the speed in which we live has increased, the availability of locally grown foods provides a connection consumers look for. “Our goal is to have all the items a family needs and wants – from the sale items to the staple items,” said Budlong. “We like the sense of community that Grocery Stores have – a meeting place to shop, have a cup of coffee and catch up with neighbors.”

beautifully maintained grass. Blooming flowers, rocks and moss will give your surroundings beauty and a feeling of warmth. If you are in the market for a landscaper, consider these tips. Types of Landscapes There are usually five types of landscaped yards. Each requires the landscaper to have a different skill set. It is best to determine which landscape appeals to you before you begin your search for a quality professional. A formal garden uses many geometrical shapes in its design. Plants provide a focal point, making the yard appear balanced. To achieve this design, a landscaper will need to carefully prune hedges. An informal landscape looks like organized chaos. Plants appear to be placed randomly. Landscapers who use this design should be skilled at working with planters and urns. The landscaper uses the home as its focal point. All aspects of the yard will flow together with a landscaper with great knowledge of native plants and making them look their best. Set Your Budget Cost is always a concern when hiring a home improvement specialist. Set a budget and stick to it. Understand what you can afford and are willing to spend annually on your landscaping. It will help you prioritize your list so you can at least get your necessities. You might need to make sacrifices. If you need a new landscaping wall, you might have to delay getting a sprinkler system. On the other hand, if irrigation is a must, then you might need to cut back on how often your lawn

business.

Prioritize Your Needs Determining what you need will help you decide which services you require from a landscaping company. Most professionals offer the following: weekly or monthly lawn and garden maintenance, weed control, tree pruning and shaping, garden installations, inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems and possibly even the construction of retaining walls or other structures. Get Referrals Neighbors are sometimes the best way to get referrals. If you like what you see in their yard, ask them for their company’s name. Discuss the pros and cons of the service as well. You can even watch the company perform work. It will give you an idea about their employees and work habits even before contacting them. You could also do an online search for landscaping companies. Be sure to read reviews from prior customers. If you see many negative reviews for one company, move on to the next one on your list. Also check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for more information. If any complaints have been lodged against the company, the BBB will inform you. Consider Availability Availability is another factor when looking for a landscaper. One of the first questions to ask is how often the company will be available for maintenance. If you want to be home while the landscaper is working, make sure you can coordinate your schedule. Also consider community regulations. For example, if your town has noise regulations, ask each landscape company what they will do to adhere to them.

The Villa at Saint Antoine The Ultimate in Assisted Living

Tips for selecting a Hearing Instrument Specialist

A crisp white linen cloth is draped over a round table where four women are lingering over a delicious meal of beef tenderloin, twice- baked potatoes, sautéed zucchini and fluffy rolls, still hot from the oven. In another corner of the room, an elderly couple are sitting opposite from one another, and though they are not talking, a lifetime of conversations is passing between them. The sun is streaming through the room’s plate glass window, illuminating a scene that looks more like it is from a five-star restaurant than from where it is actually unfolding in the dining room of the Villa at Saint Antoine. This is a scene that plays out every day at this gracious assisted living community, tucked in the pastoral woods of North Smithfield. This is a residence where seniors lead fulfilling lives in a community of their peers ~ a place where faith, dignity, respect, compassion and shared experiences unify and uplift. The Villa at Saint Antoine has a rich and layered history in the state. Inspired by the Franciscan Priest, Saint Antoine (the Saint of lost causes), this beautifully appointed and welcoming residence has one mission: to meet the physical, social, emotional and religious needs of older adults and their families. This goal is accomplished through the highest caliber of care by compassionate professionals who treat residents here with the kind of devotion usually reserved only for family. This, in fact, feels like one large extended family. For older adults who leave lifetime homes to live re, the Villa at Saint Antoine will feel much like the ultimate in retirement living. Every effort has been made

Just like your physician, it is important to have a level of comfort with your hearing health professional. You should seek an experienced and licensed practitioner. Don’t be afraid to ask your professional questions regarding their experience. A full hearing test should include tone testing and speech testing. The tone testing will discern the degree of hearing loss. Word recognition testing will give both the professional and the patient the result on how well the patient responds to amplification. Patients may want to ask for an explanation of their test results. This procedure should take about 3045 minutes. Every patient’s hearing loss is unique to only them. The best options for any hearing needs should be based on the degree of the patient’s hearing loss, their lifestyle needs, and their budget. Additionally, suggestions may also be based on the patient’s ability to manage the instruments effectively due to any physical constraints. When choosing a manufacturer, make sure you are working with a reputable manufacturer that has significant research and development behind their product line. Inquiries about products should include what country the company is based in, and what kind of service is included with the purchase of their products. Warranty terms-both repair and

to make this whole “campus” as family-friendly, accommodating and home-like as possible, with all the advantages of full nursing services. The residence is comprised of 76 apartments, with 26 different layouts ~ private or shared; studio, one and two-bedroom units. There are also seven units kept just for memory-care, and a cozy apartment for short-term respite care. Each apartment has all the amenities a resident could need, including ample storage space, a bathroom with safety features, a kitchenette and their own furniture. Along with these apartments and the elegant dining room, residents have access to full concierge services, a salon, several activity rooms where days are filled with exercise classes, lectures, arts & crafts and so much more. One of the most important considerations of this community is its inclusion of faith and worship. In fact, masses and rosaries are held daily in its tranquil chapel. This is a community that regards the whole individual, and values what makes them special and unique. There is an overall feeling of contentment and peacefulness here. loss/damage-should be discussed. A patient will need to know the model of the instrument that is suggested. There are many different fittings for both inside the ear and behind the ear. It is best to inquire if cosmetic features of the model chosen will reach the needs of the patient’s hearing loss. Every manufacturer offers an assortment of circuits. The circuit in a hearing aid is the most influential cost factor for the instruments. This is the processing center of the hearing aid. A more complex circuit can be more expensive, but it may offer better hearing for the patient. This is where research and development by the manufacturer is so important! Hearing aids now have some advanced features that can be very helpful to a patient. These may include the ability to stream from different sound sources like iPads, IPhones, and IPods. Features of the latest technology may include Bluetooth compatibility so a patient may hear the telephone through their hearing aids. Remote controls are available for most wireless circuits. Having a discussion with a qualified professional can help you understand your hearing loss and make an informed choice for your hearing health needs!

Whether you are planning a celebration or a quiet night among friends, finding a good liquor store can make a big difference. There is no better way to kick back and relax than to surround yourself with good friends and fine beverages. The best shops will provide advice, knowledge and opportunities to buy quality products. WIDE VARIETY Look for a store that matches your personal preferences. Some shops carry local beer selections from nearby microbreweries. Others stock wines and high-end imported rum or scotch. The best stores will have a mixture of popular products, along with some new, rare or exotic offerings. The liquor shop should have a variety of price points. From the most expensive to the lower-price selections, all could have an important place in a well-stocked liquor cabinet. Mixed drinks or baked recipes, for example, don't always have to include the very best brands because the flavor will be diluted with other ingredients. If you are planning to drink the liquor by itself, however, it is much better to look for a quality brand -- even if it is more expensive. EXPERT ADVICE If you entertain frequently, your liquor purchases may be significant. The bigger investment you

make, the more important it is to get expert advice. The best liquor stores will guide you into finding the right product for a specific use or occasion. You should be able to describe the event, along with the flavors or tastes you prefer. Listen to their advice. Good, personalized service may be worth traveling a longer distance. In addition, if you use the same store frequently, they will get to know your preferences and needs. Your experiences will keep improving with each visit. OVERALL EXPERIENCE Convenience is always a factor, but it isn't the only thing to consider. Ideally, the shop should be clean, organized and in a safe neighborhood. The best liquor stores take pride in having a tidy appearance, vast selection and sophisticated staff. When you find those things in a liquor store, you can enjoy the taste of sweet success. Finally, consider the overall shopping experience. You'll want to find a store that's convenient — typically either close to your home or near your route home from work — but that's just the start. A properly managed store will take pride in its appearance, selection and employees. Look for a business that stands out from the crowd. If you can find all those things in one store, your enjoyment and relaxation will be even sweeter.

Ask the Golf Expert — Todd Campbell — Mulligan’s Island Golf Academy Instructor Q. I struggle to read greens and would like to, just once, have less than three putts on each green. Can you help me take off strokes in my game? A. The majority of strokes in golf are taken in and around the green. Knowing the slope and behavior of greens will allow you to make more confident decisions, which will improve the aggressiveness of your play and lower your score. Remember, golf course architects are notorious for building optical illusions. Earlier this year, I was fortunate to spend a full day becoming a certified AimPoint Express Instructor with the mastermind of the green reading method, Mark Sweeney-- and it totally changed the way I look at reading greens. It is a simple, fast, easy and tour proven method for providing you with an accurate read of the break on the green and as a result, will help to lower your score. How many times have you read the slope of the green by sizing it up with your eyes, only to stand over the putt and feel something different? The most effective way to find the slope of the green is by feeling it. The green may look flat but when you stand on a slope, you sense how steep it really is. AimPoint helps you deal with different slopes and different green speeds by learning to assign a slope percentage to what your feet are feeling. Adam Scott

and Lidia Ko are two top players in respective tours who utilize this method in their game. In fact, it was when I saw Adam applying this method during his game that I became intrigued. I saw this as a great opportunity to add this proven method to my teaching repertoire and I am the only certified AimPoint instructor in RI. It is easy to learn, in just about an hour. It is indescribable the feeling I get when I see the look on a student’s face when they accurately discover the proper read of the green. Most people do not play enough break on the putt, and most will miss on the low side of the hole. An average mid – high handicapped golfer can expect to have 36 -40+ putts in a round of golf. Some of that is due to poor distance control and some of that is due to not reading the greens properly. The AimPoint Express method, when correctly applied, gives you a higher probability of making putts. The number of strokes can be whittled down with the proper read of the line. You must execute two things to make a putt: you have to hit the right line at the right speed. The right line is 50% of the equation. There is also an AimPoint speed class which addresses the other half of the equation. So if this applies to you…AimPoint Express may be the answer to improving your game.

Tips for selecting the PERFECT venue Ask the Expert: for your event Home Medical Equipment & Supplies Hosting an event can be exciting, but also VERY stressful! It is important to consider locations that are equipped to help you with the many facets that are involved in achieving a successful event, without any additional anxiety! LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Whether planning a conference, wedding, or other special event, it is imperative that you take into account the needs of your Guests. The venue should be fully handicapped accessible, climate controlled, and well-lit (especially at night). Is the venue located near a major airport or train station? Is the highway easily accessible? Do you have a variety of hotels that are nearby? And, of course, is plentiful off-street or reasonably priced parking available? Travel budgets vary, and all of these “little things” add up to a pleasantly memorable visit for your Guests. Service with a Smile Full-service venues can be especially helpful when planning an event, as they may have access to a team of reliable and trusted vendors. In addition, the in-house coordinator can usually help you in every stage of the planning process, from coordinating the menu, bar, décor, and staff services, to designing your event flyers and invitations, place cards, and programs. Day-of services often include setting up your centerpieces, favors, etc., as well as accepting deliveries, assisting the Bridal Party throughout the event, to keeping the kitchen updated, expediting wait staff, etc. The theme, style, and décor of the event should ultimately reflect your taste and personality, but don’t hesitate to ask for suggestions from their experienced and qualified staff – after all, they are most familiar with the venue, and will

know what “works” and what doesn’t……..not only will your event run seamlessly, but you will be able to enjoy yourself, too! Having access to a knowledgeable in-house Chef can also make the difference between an ordinary event and extraordinary catering experience as well. It is a good idea to arrange ahead of time for a tasting of the specific menu that you are interested in offering your Guests – not only can you ensure that your choices are suitable for the type of event that you are planning, but you can also take that opportunity to discuss with the Chef any concerns that you may have, such as special dietary requests, food allergies, etc. You should feel comfortable with the staff, and also feel as though your needs are being met without hesitation. If you feel pressured to make a decision that you are not comfortable with, end the relationship. You need people who will work with you to create that perfect event, and address promptly any concerns that you may have. Staff should be friendly, helpful, and accommodating at all times, and if they are unable to fulfill a specific request, they should be able to explain why in a respectful manner. It is imperative that you receive a final detailed contract or banquet event order that clearly details the itinerary, catering and bar requirements, as well as the layout of the rooms, linen selections, audio / visual rentals, décor specifications, and such at least two weeks in advance of the event. This will give you an opportunity to review your decisions, and make any changes if necessary. These tips with help you to have a memorable event, for all of the right reasons!

Many commercial insurance plans such as Blue Cross and Neighborhood Health Plan havebroader networks, providing more options to their members for choice of provider. Some insurance plans disallow claims for items that serve the same or similar purpose as anitem already paid for. For example, if Medicare pays for a cane, the program will deny a claim for a walker for .ve years, even if your need has changed.

It is now common for insurance plans to pay for equipment on a “capped rental” basis. If yourent an item (a wheelchair, for example) for a short term need, the equipment remains theproperty of the provider. If you have a long term need, the equipment rental “caps,” and theequipment ownership transfers to you. Understand that if you use most of your cap and returnthe item to the provider, it may be dif.cult to rent the same (or similar) item again under your bene.t because a provider will not get paid for the months already used. How to choose a Credit Union Are you looking for a financial institution that offers a strong commitment to the local community, dedicated customer service, or one that has better rates on deposit and credit products? You may want to consider banking with a credit union. “I think the biggest reason people move away from big banks is that the credit union side is more personal. We’re always looking out for our members and we’re not just looking at the numbers,” said Will Thibodeau, Vice President of Retail Lending at Greenwood Credit Union. “Our goal is to help the member first; we look at the member, how long have they been a member with us, and how can we help them financially.” Unlike larger banks that are for profit institutions, credit unions are non profits, which allow for more flexibility with product costs like checking and savings accounts, and better returns on funds entrusted to the company. “We do a lot of financial counseling because some people don’t understand credit reports and how their impacted. We’ll take the risk because we can take the risk, whereas with big banks, you’re just a number,” said Thibodeau. “We look at the whole person and what they’re trying to accomplish. We’re trying to get a lifetime member-our goal is long term, not just a transaction. We’re trying to give products that help people.” While Thibodeau acknowledges that some challenges his and other credit unions face are that they are smaller companies, with fewer branches and ATMs, they provide highly dedicated in-person banking service utilizing professional representatives that have an average of more than a decade of banking experience. Technology updates have also kept credit unions on a level playing field with bigger banks. “The biggest issue with our credit union is that it’s a one branch location,” he said. “But our footprint

can be national. We offer 24-7 online banking, and applications for every product are available by phone or electronically through smartphones.” Greenwood Credit Union has about 70 employees, and they’ve found their business has increased since the recession as larger banks began to charge more fees. “For our members, we bend over backwards. One of the things we sell to our members is that it’s very easy to talk to the decision makers in the company, because we’re all here,” added Thibodeau. “We always take a second look, we always try to see what possible ways we can take to say make this loan and help this person. Our goal is not just to put loans on the books, it’s to help people.” After the recent recession, customers may be concerned about the safety of their deposits. Greenwood Credit Union deposits are insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, an independent federal agency that charters and supervises credit unions. “If you come and deposit your money with us, we’re going to probably pay the highest return on that deposit because that’s important to us too,” said Thibodeau. “Anything the big banks offer we can do, but with a personal touch.” Banking at a credit union also provides benefits locally. Greenwood Credit Union reinvests back into the community, supporting local agencies such as the Kent Center, the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership, the Rhode Island Academic Decathlon, the Chamber of Commerce, and more. “Give us a try. We are the third largest credit union in the state,” said Thibodeau.” You name it, we offer it.”

How to choose Alzheimer’s Care A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia can be devastating, but supporting a loved one who has been diagnosed with compassion and informed decision-making is the greatest service a family or life partner can provide. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease for which there is no cure. At some point in a person’s Alzheimer’s journey, they will require specialized care for a variety of reasons, but often times the primary concern is because they are no longer safe at home. This happens no matter what precautions one has taken to provide an Alzheimer’s friendly home. The Caregivers Disease don’t wait until there’s a crisis Alzheimer’s is often called the “caregivers disease” because of the tremendous burden experienced by the primary giver who often experiences chronic sleep deprivation and other stress related health concerns. Many people put off doing their research until there is some type of crisis either with the caregiver or the person with Alzheimer’s requiring greater care than what can be provided at home. In choosing Alzheimer’s care, it is imperative that one begins the research process before help is needed. By researching ahead of need, you can make a better decision when the time comes. What can I do now? What tools do you need to make an informed decision and how should you go about it? First, understand that the very best facilities are solely dedicated to providing “Memory Care”. In RI, Memory Care Assisted Living Residences have a special license issued by the Department of Health for “Special Care”. There are many requirements to achieve this level of licensure but to name a few: the Residence has been designed to provide a secure environment appropriate for the resident population, as well as staffing, training and therapeutic activities appropriate for it’s residents. Continuum of Care Different people require different levels of care. Most people with Alzheimer’s or Dementia will be appropriate for Memory Care Assisted Living, but there are those who are considered medically complex who may require a higher level of care. Try and find a

Memory Care Assisted Living Residence that offers a continuum of care to Skilled Nursing if needed. Research Word of mouth can be a source of good information. The Internet has lots of information- take your search past the first page and dig deep. Review websites, consumer feedback and other available information. Stay away from websites that promise to refer you to properties. Many of them charge a fee to the facility in exchange for the referral and you are likely to find just as much information on your own. Once you see a few that you like and have examined their websites, look for a Facebook page and examine the content to get a feel for the place. Make a list of your top five places that you want to look at. Be willing to travel a further distance in certain instances for the best care. Call each place and arrange a visit. Some advisors will recommend that you show up unannounced however; you are taking a chance of not being able to obtain the information you need and may have to make a second trip. Visit While visiting the Residence, look around- not just at the existing Residents and the physical environment, but also at the staff. Ask what features of the residence have been designed specific to a person with Alzheimer’s. Ask about the Activity Program. Request a dining menu. Talk with your tour guide about challenges they have faced in the past and how they work with families to resolve them. Do you feel comfortable with the residence and the people you’ve met? Are they the kind of people you know you’ll be able to speak with if there’s ever a problem? Relax Once you’ve made a decision about the right place for your family member or beloved partner, speak with the admission team and create a transition plan. You’ll imagine the worst, and you will most likely be pleasantly surprised how well your loved one responds when they move to a specialized Alzheimer’s residence. The beauty is that they will be in a secure environment and well cared for. Your stress level will subside because once you find the right place, you can take a deep breath, leave the role of caregiver behind and again resume the role of husband, wife, partner, brother, sister, daughter, son, friend.

How to Choose an Interior Designer

Choosing the right jeweler is important when it’s time to buy an engagement ring, graduation gift or memento marking a special occasion. Why settle for just anyone? Qualified jewelers are everywhere -- even in the smallest towns. How do you pick the best jeweler in your area? Finding someone with excellent skills is the first thing to consider. Quality jewelers offer reasonable pricing and fantastic customer service. Do not make the mistake of basing your decision on cost alone. Jewelry professionals are skilled artisans who create beautiful pieces with their own hands. They repair, clean and adjust items with ease. They may also offer other products from off-site manufacturers. In general, they are an excellent resource. Jewelers and watch repair technicians have undergone extensive training and should have certifications to prove it. They also attend periodic classes to keep themselves current on regulations within the industry. Many jewelers travel to professional shows featuring the latest trends. They maintain their knowledge and understanding of the precious metal and gemstone markets. Technical expertise isn’t the only aspect to consider. Customers who receive superior service are likely to return for future purchases. You’ll want to work with someone who sees more than dollar signs behind each customer. Guarantees are essential. It is a fundamental factor in establishing a long-term relationship with the public and a track record of satisfied customers. Top professionals offer free repair and unlimited service for the life of the jewelry.

Does your home need an update? Is the outdated appearance making you feel bored? Or maybe you have recently built a beautiful new home and need someone with a good eye to help you complete the project? An interior decorator can enhance your style or help you find a whole new look for your home. Selecting the right interior decorator will help save you time and money.

People often regard their jewelry as a kind of financial or sentimental investment for family members. A professional understands the emotional bonds symbolized by a piece of jewelry, and treats it accordingly. Many jewelers are sensitive to the needs of each customer. A discount store may offer an unbelievable price on a piece of jewelry. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Inexpensive prices are often an indicator of lower quality gemstones and metal components with lower purity. When the item breaks, it might be impossible to take it back for a repair or replacement because the seller has moved on. Some dealers focus solely on profit. Doing business with a jeweler you know and trust will make a big difference when it is time to make a significant investment in a ring, necklace or watch. He or she will make every effort to get you the best possible price without sacrificing quality. If you have been doing business with the same shop for a long time, you should expect a high level of service. The item should be guaranteed every time. Anyone can sell jewelry. Malls across America are filled with jewelry stores. But a dedicated professional jeweler doesn’t just sell precious metals or gemstones. He or she brings a keen eye for the beautiful and stunning quality of each piece. It is true that price is important, but it shouldn’t be your top consideration. You will get better value for your money when you do business with a jeweler you can trust -- now and 20 years from today. High-quality workmanship starts with the jewelry and ends with your satisfaction.

Know Your Personal Taste Before hiring a designer, think about your personal tastes. Leaf through magazines and clip out designs that appeal to you. You could also look on the Internet and print out looks you like. Put them in a three-ring binder or file folder with a comment about why it attracts you. Seeing your preferences will help the designer understand how to fulfill your needs. It is also a good idea to learn some interior design terminology so you can speak the same language as the designer. Do you know the difference between a club chair, armoire and highboy? Studying the words they use will help you avoid disappointment later. Style The best interior designers have strong personal design philosophies. You will see it in their portfolios and when you speak to them. The ideal profes-

sional will have an ability to understand and reflect your style. After all, you are the person who will live in your home. They should fit in with your style, not the other way around. Find someone who is flexible and communicative. If the person doesn’t take criticism well, that is not a person you want to work with. Once you have interviewed three interior designers, choose one you have a connection with. Continue discussing time frames, costs and other details about the project. Do not make payments until you have a contract. Finding an interior designer might seem like an overwhelming task. Through research, communication and staying true to your own style, you can find a decorator who will transform your house into a true home. How to choose a School While kids will soon be heading back to school after summer break, some parents are choosing which school may be best for their child’s education. “There’s no school that’s perfect for every kid, but I think there is a perfect school for every kid,” said Dave Provost, Director of Admission and Financial Aid at Providence Country Day (PCD) school. “In terms of independent school versus public schools, I think it’s about scale and the quality and depth of relationships, it’s about opportunity, and it’s about what’s possible for students to have close relationships with teachers. It can’t really be overestimated the importance of teacher’s understanding each student as a learner and a person.” Established in 1923, the Providence Country Day School is a non profit, college-preparatory school serving students in grades 6–12. With a total enrollment of 210 and growing, and an average class size of 12 pupils, the school’s students come from more than 45 communities in southeastern New England. “The relationship between teacher and kid is older than the institution of school and I think the best schools do the least to interfere with the potential those relationships have,” said Provost, who has assisted families with enrollments for years. “We’re a school that’s very much based on being responsive to the individual learner, we have kids with vastly different skill sets, learning profiles, experiences, and interests.” Choosing a school can be a daunting decision for parents and guardians, but Provost believes there are questions to ask and items to look for that will help in the process. “Beyond the basics of looking at a schools mission and determining whether it’s a fit for the family’s values and objectives, and looking at factors such as is the school single sex or coed, what’s the geography, what are the facilities like, or what’s the scope of the program,” he said. “What does the school value? You can tell what the school values by where it invests its resources, and

how people reacting with one another within the school community.” Provost recommends that a search begin on the internet, where school websites, reviews, and recommendations may be found. He also strongly recommends visiting each choice for a day. “There’s an energy within every campus that’s discernable within a very short period of time,” said Provost. “Will my child be known, appreciated and challenged there? I think that’s what parents are paying for when they’re paying for an independent school. When they’re making an investment in an independent school it’s about your child being known, appreciated, loved even and challenged at the appropriate level.” He encourages parents to inquire about a facilities long term goals, not just the immediacy of the next school year. “What are the school’s plans for the future? What does its strategic plan looks like,” added Provost. “What the school is likely to be investing its resources in? Is the school dynamic or stagnant, is it resting on its laurels or does it seem like it’s pushing ahead and on the leading edge?” For many parents, the cost of education may be the deciding factor. Provost recommends that parents explore all possibilities, as independent schools want to assist. “Over 50 percent of families at PCD receive some form of financial assistance through a sliding scale tuition,” he said. “The idea is to be accessible to any family who would be well served by the school’s mission.” Provost also believes, however, that parents and students should follow their intuition. “Eighty percent of the school selection process is intuitive, and it’s really important for families to trust their gut about what they feel for a school regardless of a school’s reputation in the community.”

Every car requires repairs or service at some point. It doesn’t matter whether the car is new or used. It may need tires, oil changes or a new engine. Having a good relationships with a high-quality auto repair shop will save you time and hassle when your vehicle needs an immediate repair. If you are unsure about a particular shop, take your car in for a regular tune-up and maintenance. After all, it will help the car run better. Since your car needs preventive maintenance anyway, take it to get an oil change or air conditioning check. It is a great way to see if the shop will offer you great customer service. Here are some other things to keep in mind when looking for an auto repair shop: • Most people choose an auto repair shop based on a referral from friends, family or coworkers. Less than 40 percent of new customers are walkins. • The Better Business Bureau can inform you about the repair shop’s performance and reliability. • People who travel often usually work with shops that offer a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for issues that keep cropping up, particularly in older cars. • Ask about the shop’s range of services. They will need the latest technology to diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can your

prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components and warranty repairs? Do they provide a loaner, rental car, or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? • Inquire about their customer satisfaction policy. Look around the shop. Is the equipment in good condition? Is it clean, well-lit and organized? These factors all contribute to a level of professionalism, gaining customers’ trust, and to optimal service. • Look for brand names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brand-name parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. • Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services or Automotive Science Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90 percent or higher and the ability to adequately perform the services advertised. • Compare the services and fees of each shop in the area to find out the average price ranges. Don’t pick a shop based on cost; poor repair work will mean higher costs in the long run. Once you have found a shop you trust, establish a good working relationship with your mechanic. When you have great communication, getting repair work completed will be less painful.

Tires are an essential component of your automobile. They can make a big difference in your riding experience and affect a car’s steering and balance. Tires can ensure a smooth, safe drive. So finding a great tire shop is important to any automobile owner. Choose Your Budget Cost should play a role in your decision-making process. Figure out what you can afford to pay for tires. It will stop you from wasting time at expensive shops. Hopefully, you will only need to buy tires once a year, depending on how much you drive your car. Choose Type of Tires When selecting tires, consider the climate you live in. If it is dry and warm, then a standard tire will be fine. But if you live in a place that gets a lot of snow, then you will want a better grade of tires. Snow tires are good for snow or dry land. High performances tires are good for driving at high speeds. If you commute a long distance, be sure to choose high-mileage tires. Choose an Outlet There are a variety of ways you can purchase tires. They are available through national chains or a local auto shop. You may even buy them online. Buying tires in person allows you to inspect the tires. You can see exactly what you are getting. When you purchase tires online, it is difficult to judge what you are getting. National chain stores usually guarantee the product. They might be more costly, but buying them a

big store may give you peace of mind. Local shops will likely be more inexpensive, and you might get more personalized service. Ultimately, your choice should fit your priorities and budget. New or Used Some people don’t mind purchasing used tires. Pulloffs are tires that came with a new car, but the new car buyer wanted custom tires. As a result, pulloffs are almost new. Does your tire shop guarantee pulloff tires? If a dealer sells new and pulloff tires, the tire installer may not realize that each tire must replicate the way it was installed on the previous car. Failure to do so will result in the steel belt breaking through. When tires have had the worn treads replaced, hey are called retreads. A factory buffs the old tread and attaches a new one. Inspections ensure the casing is strong enough to hold a new tread. If you are on a budget, pulloffs and retreads are great choices. Anyone who purchases used tires should inspect each tire thoroughly. Bubbles, holes, cuts and metal showing are a sign that you should not purchase the product. It may not be safe. Check out the Shops When you visit a shop, look at their products and meet their employees. You should feel as though the salespeople are trustworthy and knowledgable. Once you find a good tire shop, you will likely return again for other products. It is important that you develop a good working relationship.

How to Choose an Auto Body Shop How to Choose an Awesome Bakery Anyone who has experienced a car accident knows that it can be a calamitous event. Once you have dealt with any resulting health issues, you will have to contend with damage to your automobile. Whether your car has experienced significant damage or simply a scratch, it is vital to find an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable. Even the smallest accident can throw your schedule into disarray. A good auto body shop will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are a necessary part of life for most people. Once you have a list of names, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. If your social network doesn't have good recommendations, consult the Yellow Pages, advertising supplements or the Internet. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone. Describe the problem and listen for the response. If the person seems knowledgable and friendly,

keep that shop on the list. However, if the person seems rushed and uninterested, it can mean the shop is very busy. It might also have poor customer service. Eliminate them from your list. When you have chosen an auto body shop, visit their store. Check for prices, certifications guarantees. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car. They should have previous satisfied customers with whom you can contact. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don't match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Quality auto body shops should be able to complete an entire job onsite. Our cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans get us to work on time, back and forth to school and transport our families to and from their destinations. Choosing a great auto body shop is important for yourself and your family. The right auto body shop will have superior customer service, great prices and excellent quality of work.

For your taste buds, not just any bakery will do. You want something that not only looks great, but tastes even better. Anyone who has ever smelled freshly baked bread knows the importance of finding a good bakery. Nothing compares to the aroma of cookies or pies coming out of the oven. If it smells good, chances are that it will taste even better. If you love baked goods, then choosing the best bakery is a priority. Maybe you are looking to plan a special event. Or perhaps you simply need a high-quality cake for a family occasion. Sometimes, store-bought goodies are just not good enough. Awesome bakeries give you the option of purchasing moist muffins, breads, doughnuts or cakes. But they will also offer you other treats, such as low carbohydrates, gluten-free or low-fat products for anyone who is on a special diet plan. There are several things that all the best bakeries share: High-Quality Ingredients The best bakeries use high-quality products from around the globe. Wouldn’t you like to taste real Belgian chocolate? How about a cake topped with organic chocolate drizzle? Bakeries have fabulous taste when it comes to choosing ingredients. Atmosphere Great bakeries employ excellent staff who loves what they do. As soon as you enter, they should greet you promptly. The ambience should be upbeat. After all,

baking is fun! Many bakeries will have daily samples so you can get a taste before committing. Free nibbles make visiting bakeries a treat! Consistency Worthwhile bakeries offer consistency, regardless of who is doing the cooking. The food is consistently delicious. They should take great pride in their products. The process of creating cakes with top-notch ingredients should be the same day-after-day. Specialties Sometimes, bakeries serve specialty products that only they can offer. For example, one neighborhood bakery might have cake pops or organic whole-wheat bread. Many times, the owner will use a family recipe that is unique. Whatever you desire, from dinner rolls to wedding cakes, the right bakery will be able to meet your needs. Budget Awesome bakeries can fit a wide range of budgets. The best products may cost more since ingredients are expensive, and experienced staff are difficult to find. However, most bakeries try to fit all spending levels. Whether you are purchasing food for lunch or a special occasion, the best bakeries will deliver consistent results. Many bakeries offer catering services. Your friends and family will likely have recommendations you can try. Also, visiting culinary websites will help you find the latest reviews. These sites will also have stories about market trends. As always, check customer reviews of bakeries. You will likely find an amazing bakery close to home. Check local newspapers for special deals at local bakeries.

A lot has changed in veterinary care over the past 20 years and although the profession has less regulation than expected, WestPaws Veterinary Center prides themselves on holding to the highest standards. According to owners, Drs. Mark and Danielle Paradise, roughly only 20 percent of practices across the country are actually accredited. Their first practice, NorthPaws in Greenville, is accredited and WestPaws is currently undergoing the accreditation process, to ensure the animals of Rhode Island are receiving the best care possible. Mark and Danielle, who both graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine with their doctorate in 1999, married and moved to Rhode Island where they began the successful NorthPaws in 2004. Having perfected their business model the pair took over West Bay Animal hospital from Dan Simpson in 2014, changing the name to WestPaws. “It’s been a wild ride, it’s been good,” Mark said. Now, WestPaws Veterinary Center runs as an out-patient cat and dog facility in Warwick, offering “family-focused” top quality care, dedicated to forming long lasting and compassionate relationships not only with pets, but their owners as well. The doctors at WestPaws will “bend over backwards” to help families after a concerning diagnosis. They understand that not only is every pet different, but so are their owners, and not every treatment is the best option for every family. The reality is there are often varying financial constraints for owners and that not everyone can afford the best route of action. The Paradises believe it is really important to have a conversation with clients to find out the individualized treatment that is right for them and the patient. Although

there may be a perceived “gold standard” the doctors want to explore all possible options before moving forward with any treatment. The doctor’s have often been asked what they would do if their own pet was given the same diagnosis as a patient. Unlike many other practices, WestPaws has the unique opportunity of having two qualified doctors on hand to provide advice on site. Essentially in the end, Mark and Danielle ensure that their clients are happy with their choice of treatment. Just like with humans, the best course of action for pet owners is “preventative care” rather than waiting until concerns turn into an emergency. It is easier to “catch things early”. The longer a problem is allowed to carry on oftentimes the costs of fixing a situation is increases. Both NorthPaws and WestPaws have a credit care system, Veterinary Care Foundation. People can donate to the charitable fund to help pay for animals and their families in need. They also have various financing opportunities for care. WestPaws Veterinary Center is located at 1200 Bald Hill Rd., Warwick. Their appointment hours run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday; 8a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays; 8a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, and are closed on Wednesdays. A doctor remains for emergency services until midnight and a vet tech remains throughout the night. Alongside wellness appointments the organization offers surgical and dental services as well as acupuncture and herbal medicine, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, microchipping, and pet loss support among others. For more information on WestPaws, their services and availability call 401-828-5767, visit their offices or their website at www.westpaws.com.

How to Choose a Bookstore Bookstores are a fantastic refuge. Most shops are peaceful and quiet. You can walk around the sections, browsing through new titles and old classics. You might even meet someone with similar interests. These days, bookstores offer much more than bookshelves. There are plenty of funactivities and even lectures to enjoy. But walking to the closest bookstore may not give you the best results. Choosing which bookstore gains your loyalty takes careful planning and thought. Types of Booksellers There are many types of bookstores. Anyone who prefers a genre such as mysteries, spirituality, fantasy or science .ction should begin researching genrebookstores. These shops have the latest publications in your area of interest. They can also inform you which authors have books that will be released soon. General bookstores carry books from every genre. If you have eclectic tastes, this bookstore should be your .rst top. Bookstore chains also offer large quantities of books in every category. They also have music, toys, journals, magazines and other items. Chains have large website soyou can check their stock, along with memberships and other discounts. On the other hand, independent bookstores cater to your local community. Theauthors featured may be your neighbors as well as higher-pro.le, New York Times best selling authors. While they will have the latest bestsellers, these shops will also cater tothe popular concerns of your region. Most independent bookstores have livelycommunity events, including guest speakers and special events, weekly story times for the littlest of readers, book club registrations and partnerships with local school systems. Independent bookstores offer the added touch of personalized attention to the needs of their customers, often times going above and beyond to ensure repeatbusiness and relationship building. Used bookstores are very popular with most readers. These stores offer gently used books, and sometimes new books as well. It is a great way to build your library. You can also sell books back to the store, which will either give you store credit or cash. It is an excellent way to recycle your purchases. Services Many bookstores also have a variety of other services for their customers. Finding the best bookstore for your personality will depend on how much you value these extra services.

• Serving the community: Some bookstores are more like a central meeting placefor the community. They have a large bulletin board, coffee shop and events involving local authors, artists and poets. It is a fabulous way to stay informed and make new friends in your neighborhood. • Supporting local art: Some booksellers also exhibit — and sell — local art. • Staff recommendations: Bookstores like to ask their employees for good books to recommend to customers. Some shops even employ experts in a particular genre who will advise you on how to .nd books that best suit your tastes. • Special orders and mail orders: Special orders may be a free service at bookstores. They might specially order a book for you and then notify you when it arrives. Local shops may also ship books to their local customers. • Inviting patrons to stay a while: Sitting down among books is a popular pastime for many people. It shouldn’t be hard to .nd a bookstore that allows customers to linger. Attractive armchairs and lamps will let you know that the store is inviting you to stay a while and relax. Hanging out at a bookstore can be a great way to unwind after a stressful day. Pricing While the pricing on traditionally published books is set by the publisher, limited the bookstores ability to discount. Costconscious consumers may look for bookstores thatoffer rewards programs. Some shops will give you a discount after you have bought a certain number of books. Bookstore coffee shops may also have a similar program. Chain stores often sendout noti.cations via email about special sales and promotions. Gift Giving Reading accessories make wonderful gifts. Some bookstores offer complimentary gift-wrapping services. Or look for a bookstore that also sells greeting cards and gift wrapping. You might even purchase a gift card, probably located near the register. In today’s economy, bookstores are competing for your money. Sellers are adding value to your visit by expanding their selections of toys and gifts, giving you better services and creating a neighborly atmosphere. The best bookstore will be able to meet all of your needs.

How to Choose a Skilled Nursing Facility for Your Loved One Finding a skilled nursing facility for a loved one can be a challenge for everyone involved. With hundreds of choices available, it can be difficult to sort through all of your options. Your best choices are facilities that have high scores from state agencies such as the nursinghome regulatory agency or department of health. The nursing staff in these facilities are required to complete a formal certification process. As a result, the staff at a nursing facility is usually much more skilled and regulated than staff at an assisted living facility. That’s because the staff at skilled nursing facilities provide and administer prescription medications. Assisted living facility staff do not usually have the same authorization. Skilled nursing facilities provide more personalized care to residents who are suffering from advanced age, severe illness or infirmity. Assisted living residents live in a somewhat private environment and perform most of their daily living activities with minimal staff assistance. Your loved one will need reassurance that he or she will be safe and well taken care of by a highly skilled nursing staff. Select a facility close to your loved one’s family and friends. It should be easy to see your loved one. Frequent visits will help ease the transition from independent living to a skilled nursing environment. You can form an accurate opinion by visiting several

facilities. Reputable centers will have no problems with scheduling interviews with staff or giving tours of the living areas and grounds. If a facility doesn’t allow you to see these areas or have a meeting with the director, it should be dropped from your list. Cleanliness, cheerful decor and happy residents neatly dressed are symbols of a quality facility. Speak to current residents and their families to get a good assessment of the facility. Family members will likely provide the most unbiased and unvarnished opinion of the facility. Most high-quality skilled nursing facilities are significant investments. They provide a much higher level of care and so they cost more. Talk with an attorney who specializes in nursing facility cases for advice on cost, as well as quality of care. The decision to put your loved one in a particular facility is not permanent. If your family member is not receiving good care or shows signs of abuse, you have the right to remove him or her. Frequent visits are important so you can monitor the health and wellbeing of your loved one. See him or her at different times of the day to verify the level of care. You can never be too choosy when it comes to your loved one. Take all the time you need when searching for a skilled nursing facility. Putting a loved one in a facility can be difficult and emotionally challenging. Finding the best one you can afford will give you peace of mind.

Selecting a Septic Service Your septic system is one of the most critical components to your home. When it is working properly it is easy to forget about it. But when it breaks you won't be able to think of anything else. Choosing a septic service repair company will help you maintain your system. Choose a qualified company before there is a crisis. Thinking ahead will save you possible time and grief later. Qualifications Working on a septic system is not something that a general handyman can do. Finding a qualified professional company will ensure that the maintenance or repair is being done properly. Reputable companies only employ highly trained people who understand how to work around the dangerous chemicals in the septic system. Following proper procedures will prevent damage to your tank as well as your yard. Professionals avoid digging up your yard while doing their work. They can accomplish normal maintenance with minimal damage. Budget Budget is always a concern, especially these days. Keep in mind that your septic system is an essential part of your house. There should be no delay in maintaining it. If a price for service seems too good to be true, it probably is. Selecting the cheapest service is not usually the best decision. The work might prove to be unacceptable. They might also use unqualified workers to perform professional services. Using low-quality services could cost you twice as much. After all, you will need a professional to clean up the mess of the low-quality predecessor. Knowledge of Septic System Requirements Understand the maintenance that needs to be completed on your system. Cut down the cost of a standard pumping by locating the pump-out hatches prior to the company's arrival.

Otherwise, you are paying the workers an hourly rate to perform manual labor tasks such as digging for the hatches themselves. Before the company arrives on your property, you should have an understanding about the services they are performing. Are they simply pumping the tank and removing sewage or do you need maintenance services as well. Sometimes, septic companies will perform additional services along with routine pumping. It might cost more than standard services, but these services will help you maintain your system and give you peace of mind. Selecting A Single Provider A one-stop shop is always better than hiring multiple companies. Avoid confusion by hiring a single company to perform multiple services. They will often give you a price break for the work. You can find good septic repair companies by searching your local newspaper classifieds or a phone book. Social media sites will also tell you about companies in your area. Websites will provide general information, company philosophy and perhaps even cost figures. Your best option, however, is to get a referral. Ask family and friends whom they have used. Strong referrals can save you thousands of dollars and endless hours of frustration. When you have a list of companies, select two or three of them. Contact the companies and ask questions. How long will it take to complete the job? What are the possible solutions to your problems? Have they done similar work in he past? How long does the repair usually last? Most importantly, get quotes in writing. They should spell out exactly how much the services will cost. Of course, request a copy of all receipts related to the repair when it is completed. Many companies might tell you that they can't guarantee a price until they begin the repair. That's fine, as long as you understand the added costs you might incur if additional issues are found with your septic system.

How to Choose a Computer Repair Specialist

The transmission is an important part of your car. Without a good transmission, the car will not run properly. Fluid in the transmission lubricates shifts. This fluid needs to be replaced periodically to keep the transmission working. It is a common problem, one that is easily preventable. Sometimes breakdowns occur even if you are using clean transmission fluid. Finding a quality transmission repair shop will help you keep your car in good working order.

As modern society has become increasingly dependent on personal computers, it has become essential to be able to get a computer fixed quickly and successfully in case something goes wrong. Whether it’s a computer that’s used for work or one that’s for fun and entertainment, a breakdown can ruin your day. It’s a good idea to find a qualified computer repairman you can trust before you need one. Here are some factors to consider when looking for a computer repair specialist.

Look for a shop that encourages proper maintenance Proper maintenance is key to ensuring the longevity of your transmission. After every 30,000 miles, you should have it serviced or cleaned to prevent problems. Good shops provide a power flush to remove and replace all transmission fluid. Some car manufacturers recommend servicing the transmission after every 50,000 miles. Many car owners have discovered that it is simply not often enough. It costs so much to replace a transmission that it is often financially smarter to just buy another car instead. That is exactly what automakers are hoping you will do. Err on the side of caution and replace your transmission fluid regularly. Search for properly trained specialists You will save yourself much time and money if you search for a repair shop with a good track record. Some shops require multiple visits before the work is done correctly. Mechanics at the best repair shops are properly trained to fix a wide variety of transmissions. Do not use a general auto repair shop or dealer service for transmission repairs. It will cost you more money because they will have to subcontract with a transmission specialist to do the job. Save money by going to the trans-

mission shop yourself. Choose a credible repair shop The Better Business Bureau can also give you information about poor performing shops in your area. That organization keeps a record of complaints lodged against them. If you are considering a national chain, the Bureau of Consumer Investigations will also inform you about which stores are not reputable. Determine the type of repair work to be done Transmission work is time consuming and difficult. Professionals must remove the transmission from the vehicle. That can cost about $500 even before any other work is started. Minor transmission repairs could require the entire transmission to be rebuilt. There are only two options for repairing a transmission: remanufacturing or rebuilding. Remanufacturing remakes the transmission from used cores and replaces all moving parts. It is the equivalent to purchasing a whole new transmission. Rebuilding a transmission replaces worn-down parts. It is the most common transmission repair. Prepare for hefty repair costs Because basic labor itself is expensive, it often makes more sense to completely rebuild your transmission rather than fixing minor issues periodically. This price will depend on the complexity and the extent of the rebuild. Remanufactured transmissions are expensive. The standard rebuilt transmission usually offers a oneyear/12,000-mile warranty. For a remanufactured transmission, the standard warranty is three-year/100,000 miles.

Type of Computer Is your computer a desktop or laptop system? Desktop systems are generally made up of a tower, a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. Laptops are self-contained in a package that folds up and travels easily. Desktops and laptops often have different issues, so it's best to consult a technician who specializes in your type of computer. Ask friends and relatives to recommend a repair specialist, or check with the computer technicians at your workplace. You may find the specialist you’re looking for at a local business machines vendor or at the help desk of an electronics retailer. Experience Look for a specialist who has successfully fixed many computers similar to yours. You don't want them getting onthe-job training on your machine. Find out how long they’ve worked on computers and how they keep up with new developments. An experienced technician who attends seminars or classes to learn about the latest computer news is likely to be well-equipped to address your computer issue. Make a Personal Visit Take a careful look around the computer repair shop where your potential technician works. When you first enter a computer repair shop, beware of sales representatives in the front who may try to sell you a new product rather than get something fixed. Make sure you meet the technician who will work on your computer. As you describe your computer's problem, watch his or her response carefully -- both words and body language. If they seem to know the problem, then odds are that's the case. If they don’t instill confidence, you should probably take your computer elsewhere. The most important thing is for you to feel comfortable with and confident in your computer repair specialist. Finding the right combination of experience, customer service and price can be a challenge, but it's worth the extra effort in the long run.

Price As with most services, don't automatically go with the vendor who offers the lowest quote. If something goes wrong during the repair, you may have to eat the additional costs incurred to fix the new problem. On the other hand, don't assume that the vendor with the highest price offers the best quality or service. Small shops and individuals frequently offer the best deals because they don't emphasize selling you a bundle of services or software that you don't need.

Ask the Promotional Products Expert — RhodyPrints It was almost 20 years ago that I found myself looking for a new career. I fell into Promotional Products business by mistake. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Like anything else, learning a new business with all of the unique ways in which this industry operates, was interesting and a bit crazy at first, but crazy never seemed to bother me. Take from that what you will! The bottom line is that working with each customer is different from the last one because each has different needs and goals that need to be addressed. So with every customer you are putting together a customized program to fit their specific needs. Promos, when done well, are an effective way for you to market your business or products and services. This isn’t about dropping prices significantly on your product line, or when you have a fire sale to move dead inventory. In fact, quite the opposite. Instead, we can work together on well-planned ideas that focus on getting new customers for your existing products. We can help potential customers feel that they want to try your product(s). Ideas can be based on a theme, new product, anniversary, fundraiser, grand opening, etc. One of the major benefits that your company, organization or

charity can get from our promotions is brand awareness. Television, Radio advertisements need constant repetition to make a mark on consumers and that can get very expensive. If you don’t run a great deal of these media ads the likelihood of most consumers missing your ad increases significantly. Our method creates awareness of a particular brand by directly taking it to your target audience. Promotional Products remain the most cost efficient way to advertise. Rhody Prints can help you promote your company, organization, school, charity, team or event. We can also supply you with thousands of options for Promotional items, handle your Printing needs and/or supply Team Athletic Apparel. We also carry a range of sporting goods for most major sports. Please visit our website: www.rhodyprints. com We can help you motivate and recognize your staff, employees, students, volunteers, athletic teams, etc. Our buying power and low overhead helps us keep the cost down and therefore offers you great pricing. No longer do you have to worry about washing or ironing your clothing. These days, professionals depend on a dry cleaner. Others may drop off their formal wear or coats for an occasional cleaning. Either way, choosing the right dry cleaner is a great way to save time and energy. When looking for a new dry cleaner, start by finding business in your area. You might see them advertised in your local newspaper or on the Internet. Your social network may know of good dry cleaners in your area. Once you have developed a list, start visiting a few of them. The business should be clean and organized. Bright lighting will allow you to see well. Clothes kept on the racks should be clean, fresh and pressed. There should not be chemical odors or dirty surroundings. Ask a staff member how long the dry cleaner has been in business. If it has been around for a few years, then it must have satisfied customers. You can ask them for references. They should be able to furnish names and contact information of customers who use their services. Verify the history of newer businesses. Have they been in business at a previous location? Were they ever or are they now part of a chain? Sometimes a dry cleaner will have such success and develop multiple outlets. All staff members should be friendly and professional. They should be able to inform you about common cleaning problems. Ask how they handle special fabrics. It is important to find out how the clothes are cleaned. It is usually better to find a dry cleaner that

cleans clothes on site. Moving clothing to a different location leaves a greater chance they will be lost. Some dry cleaners automatically mend small tears when you drop off your dry cleaning. Other businesses provide alteration services. Talk to each dry cleaner to ask about special services. Again, if the person offering these services is not on location, it is much easier for your items to get lost. You could also inquire about the procedures used to clean your clothes. Some methods are friendlier to the environment than others. Some procedures will help your clothes last longer. How long will the service take? Some dry cleaners offer speedy service while others may take a week or more. If you need an item cleaned in a hurry, this question can make a big difference. You may be required to sign a statement that holds the company innocent if they hurt your garment. Read it carefully before signing it. Once you have narrowed your list to two or three possible dry cleaners, call the Better Business Bureau. If they have a bad report on file, the BBB should be able to tell you the allegation and what action the business took to close the situation. Some dry cleaners use coupons to attract new customers. Look for these discounts. It is a great way to save money while trying out their services. Do not take your best clothes at first. Drop off only one or two items. After they have finished, evaluate the quality of their work. Do your clothes look clean and pressed? Do they smell nice? If you are satisfied, then you may have found a new dry cleaner. If not, repeat the process until you discover a business that makes you happy.

Adoption from Foster Care The decision to adopt a child is never one that comes without a great deal of consideration, education, conversation and more. Perhaps you have been considering adoption but aren’t sure where or how to begin. Let’s start with the types of adoption. Perhaps the more commonly known adoption routes include international adoption, domestic infant adoption and independent adoption. What many people don’t realize is there are many children right here in our own state who are looking for a forever family with whom to share their lives. Adoption from foster care involves children who are living in state care after having been removed from their home for reasons that can include abuse, neglect, death of a parent, etc. Although most typically are school-age children, generally between the ages of 5 and 18, an increasing number of younger children are coming in to care as well. While currently living in a foster or group home, these children deeply want a chance for love in a happy, permanent family setting. Answers to a Few Frequently Asked Questions Must I be married in order to adopt? No. Adoptions by single people are on the increase, and some children actually do best with a single parent. We encourage married and single adults of any race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation to apply to adopt a child from state care. It is more important that families that can make a life-long commitment to provide a safe, loving home to a child. Must adoptive parents meet age requirements? In Rhode Island you may adopt a child if you are over 21 years of age. There is no upper age limit, and adoptive parents in their 40s and 50s are quite common. What about infants? It is not often that infants are registered with Adoption Rhode Island. If you are interested in adopting an infant, either domestically or internationally a list of licensed adoption agencies can be found on our website at www.adoptionri.org. Adopting an infant can often involve a long wait and considerable fees.

How much does it cost to adopt a child from foster care? There is no fee to adopt a child in state care. The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) is a public agency and offers its adoption services free of charge. Furthermore, some children in DCYF care are eligible to receive subsidies until they are 18 or 21, depending on their needs. What kind of income must an adoptive parent have? There are no income requirements for adoptive families nor is it a requirement to be a homeowner. You do have to prove that you have the means to care for a child in care and be able to provide a stable place to live. How does one get started/what is the process? Interested parents are encouraged to attend an information meeting, held once a month at Adoption Rhode Island. Here they will learn more about the children in care and specifics involved in the process. They will also have an opportunity to ask questions and sign up for the required 8-10 week home study/ adoption preparation class. Once a home study is completed, Adoption RI will work with the Department of Children, Youth and Families and send recommended home studies to the caseworkers who work with the type of child a prospective family is hoping to parent. How long will the process take? Once classes have been taken and a home study is complete, the waiting period to be matched with a child can range from a few weeks to a year or two. Families who are most flexible about the type and age of child they are willing to consider are matched with children more quickly. Who can I contact for more information? Anyone interested in learning more about adoption from foster care can contact Adoption Rhode Island at 401-865-6000 or visit www.adoptionri.org. Whichever adoption path you choose, we wish you much happiness on your journey. Adoption is a wonderful way to build a family!

How to Choose a Photographer Professional photographers are experts at capturing a memorable or special event. Whether you want photos of a wedding, milestone birthday, anniversary or graduation, a high-quality picture can help you keep these memories alive. The best photographers are reliable and responsible. But you don’t have to break your budget to find one. Follow these tips to help you find a photographer in your area. Styles of Photographers Even though photographers have their own styles, they tend to use one of the following three styles in their work. Some professional photographers have a journalistic approach. They do not stage photos. Rather, they prefer to record what happens. The second style is formal. It is a more traditional approach. These photographers take mostly posed photographs. Finally, some photographers use a mixture of both philosophies. Research Photographers First, look for on the Internet for photographers in your area. Many photographers specialize in specific types of events. Be sure that the photographers who interest you match the type of event you are holding. Photographers usually display their best work on the Internet. Remember that everyone is capable of getting a good shot every now and then, but you should see wide range of striking images that displays their capability. Follow them on Facebook and other social media. Professional photographers prefer to publicize their work using the latest technology. It will give you a feeling of their portfolio as well as how busy they are. Once you have your list narrowed down to two or three, contact them to check their availability. High-quality photographers are usually in demand. It is essential to plan ahead.

You can also inquire with your social network about photographers they have used, especially if they have photos of themselves that you like. Interview Photographers When you find two or three photographers who are available, conduct personal interviews with each of them. Explore their backgrounds and look at a complete portfolio. Ask each professional if he has ever worked with the other vendors you have hired or are considering. Find out about his plans for the shoot. Has the photographer ever worked at that location before? Will a photographer or assistant be shooting the event? If there are particular shots you like, communicate that to your photographer. Look through magazines and show him pictures to see if he could replicate the look and feeling. Inquire about whether you will receive printed proofs, or if they are available through a private page for you or anyone interested in buying them. A high-quality professional will be able to bring out the best in the subject. He will capture the essence of the moment and preserve it forever. You should be offered several options concerning poses, prints, sizes, backgrounds and other elements. Read the contract thoroughly before hiring someone. Professional photographers should be willing to give you a contract. A deposit will hold your date. Expect to have it available at the signing of the contract. Also understand when other payments are due. Most photographers expect another payment when they appear at the event. Choosing a photographer will often come down to your intuition. But don’t delay, as the best photographers are usually in demand. And make sure you understand everything in the contract before you sign it.

Shopping for the right insurance agent can feel overwhelming. After all, there are plenty of things to consider. You need to find a company that offers the right mix of service, coverage and an affordable price. The challenge may simply be not knowing how to identify a reliable, reputable agent. Remember that everyone needs insurance coverage. An experienced agent can walk you through various options, keeping in mind your budget and lifestyle. Before choosing an insurance plan, you will need to identify an agent to guide you through the process. Your financial future depends on finding the right person to help you get insurance that will fit your needs. Your family, friends and colleagues have likely worked with insurance agents in the past. Ask people you trust for referrals. If you receive a recommendation, it is because that person has had a positive experience. There is a good likelihood that you will have similar results. Successful agents understand that offering great service will keep them in business. Their careers depend on word-of-mouth. If you are happy with the service you receive, your insurance agent will appreciate your willingness to refer acquaintances to her in the future. If you do not have recommendations, begin researching your options. Begin by looking at local companies and brokers. Large insurers give all of their agents the same training. Each agent will be subject to the same company policies. In some ways, that can be comforting. However, agents at large companies may lack creativity and flexibility in how they handle their accounts. As you conduct your research, be thorough and critical. Buying a policy is similar to purchasing a new car or home. It is truly that important.

Select a company that is highly regarded by consumers. Read reviews of each company to determine who has the most satisfied clients. Are they easy to work with? Have there been any problems with collecting on a policy? Also, check that any prospective agent has all necessary licenses and training. After narrowing your list of prospective agents, make an appointment to visit each one. Prepare a list of questions and concerns about your personal situation. Take notes during your meeting. Remember that you must feel comfortable with the answers before purchasing a policy. If an agent tries to pressure you into making a decision right away, inform him that you need more time and cannot sign anything immediately. The right agent will let you take as much time as you need to understand the implications of each policy. They will give you useful information and not subject you to high-pressure sales techniques. Your agent should be available. The relationship doesn't end once the sale is completed. Your dialogue should be continuous. The best agents are available in the event you have to file a claim. Agents who have been in business for many years likely have a good reputation and track record. They understand the policies and will even take extra care that you are properly protected. It is essential that you choose the right type and amount of insurance to adequately protect yourself and your financial future. The policy should be tailored to fit your specific needs. A seasoned, skilled insurance agent will be an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future.

Timing is everything and with today’s incentives getting solar has never made more sense. Using better products available will increase the returns on your solar system investment. Local companies like WattSun Solar understand the value of installing premiere technologies with experienced installers. INCENTIVES Understanding the different incentives available will help homeowners choose what the best option for their home is. Currently there is a statewide grant offered by Commerce RI which pays $1.15 per kWh based on the size of your system and is capped at $10,000.00 National Grid currently is offering a 15 and 20 year PBI (Performance Based Incentive) for residential and commercial customers. This incentive alone could potentially generate enough revenue to cover the entire cost of your solar system investment. Talking with a solar expert from WattSun Solar you can get a free design and proposal. This will enable you to see what a system on your home or business will produce in savings.

PRODUCTS There are a few things to consider when purchasing a solar system. First, look at the solar panels. Are they polycrystalline or monocrystalline? Mono panels will produce better results and degredate more slowly over time. This greater efficiency will produce better savings. Second, look at all the inverters of the system. There are string inverters and micro inverters. Try to avoid string inverters, because the warranty is shorter and if one panel stops working ~ they all stop working. WattSun Solar has only installed mono panels and micro inverters. It is what is best for the consumer. No out of state companies will offer this package, because it’s not what is best for their profit margin. Use a local company, with local installers to keep all the incentives in beautiful RI. FINANCING We have a couple of different lenders offering a “No Money Out of pocket” ownership option. This means you own the system attached to your home. You get the 30% Federal tax credit and all the utility incentives to ensure the system will pay for itself.

How to Choose an Assisted Living Facility

We live in a world that is fast paced, high stressed, and a constant juggling act. With the constant demands we place on ourselves, it is crucial that we are mindful of our eating habits. In order for our body to function at its optimal level, we need to be sure that we are fueling it with proper nutrition and supplementation. When you eat poorly, you feel it in your body. Consuming too many unprocessed, unhealthy foods will have a large impact in how you feel throughout the day. Poor eating choices will give you more than just a flabby body. These foods will hurt your concentration, sleeping habits and self-confidence. A diet rich in natural, unprocessed foods will give you a healthier body and mind, along with a better outlook on life. When you are looking for a lifestyle change, one of the best things you can do is revolutionize your eating habits. Your money is important and how your finances are handled can make your life easier or cause much frustration. Buying or refinancing a home can be one of the biggest impacts on your life and your finances. Choosing the right bank and mortgage specialist to work with can make all the difference! Not all banks and mortgage products are the same. Working with a reputable, stable institution that is very familiar with where you live and finding the mortgage product that suits not only your budget but your long term plans are just as critical. Interest rate is important but it shouldn’t be the only factor when considering where to apply for your mortgage. Here are some aspects to consider when doing your research. REFINANCING YOUR HOME How long do you plan to stay in the home? Lowering your monthly payment Getting Equity from your home for Home Improvements or financing education Consolidating home debt When refinancing your home, your long term intentions are an important part of the decision. Interest rates will vary based on the length of term of the mortgage and your principal will be reduced faster or slower depending on that term. If your long term view of owning the home is 10 years or less, you may want to consider an Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM). Most ARM products offer a lower interest rate for a shorter fixed period which allows for a lower monthly payment and reduces overall interest. When lowering the monthly payment is your goal, term can be the most important factor. The longer your term the lower your payment can be however, you will pay more interest over the length of the mortgage. Determining your home’s equity is based on 2 numbers; the appraised value and how much you owe. The difference between the two is the equity in your home. Most financial institution will provide financing up to 95% of the total value or more. However, when you are using more the 80% of your home’s value there will be Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) to consider as part of your monthly payment. In some cases it may not make sense or work within your budget. If you’re looking to consolidate home debt, like a Home Equity Line of Credit or Loan, it certainly can save you money. If you are trying to consolidate other debt such as credit card, personal loans, car payments…etc., we don’t recommend it unless you need financial relief. The payments and interest on that type of debt can be very costly in the long term. The last piece to consider is setting a realistic timeline to close the mortgage. In most cases a refinance can be closed in 30 days, but sometimes it could take longer based on 3rd party involvement, like an appraiser, title searches, attorney scheduling…etc. It can also be shorter than 30 days when all pieces are provided and gathered promptly. PURCHASING A NEW HOME Purchasing a new home is a very exciting time for a person, couple or family. Making the process move smoothly is dependent on many factors. The first is to understand what you can afford based on the lending guidelines of the institution and more importantly what your budget can handle. One of the major details in determining whether you can afford a new home is the calculation of your Debt vs. your Income. The key to remember is a lender uses your gross monthly income (before tax deductions) and your budget is based on your “take home pay”. You may be approved based on a lenders or Fannie Mae guidelines but it could be a stretch on your budget. Keep that in mind when you seek a pre-approval from a financial institution. Your credit score and credit report play a significant factor in being approved for a mortgage. It is always a good idea to pull a credit report once a year to ensure accuracy. Each bank or lender does have some set guidelines for a minimum score; however there are other factors that can play into a score and having your mortgage

specialist look at it with you is important. Set a realistic time frame to process, underwrite and close on your mortgage. There are many moving parts to putting a mortgage together, such as: appraisal, title search, flood certification, inspections, gathering credit info…etc. Many of these are handled outside of the lender and can take time. When purchasing a home, 45-60 days to close the mortgage is realistic. If timelines line up, it can be shorter. INFORMATION YOU NEED FOR YOUR LENDER Loan Purpose: Purchasing a home or refinancing your existing home Employment and Income information: Where you work; total income and length of employment Outstanding Debts: Monthly fixed payments, credit card debt…etc. Savings and Assets: Provide bank and investment statements Down Payment: How much are you putting down and is it your funds or a gift Home Information: Loan amount and Estimated value of property When you start to think and talk about buying a new home or refinancing your existing home, it’s a good idea to reach out to a Mortgage Specialist and ask your questions. This will give you a very clear understanding of what the steps are and how to make it a smooth process. Contact a BankRI Mortgage Specialist at www.bankri.com.

NEW HOURS: Mon.-Fri. 5pm-10pm Sat. 1pm-11pm Sun. 1pm-10pm

Far away, in a small village tucked in the distant hills of Italy, a young man once dreamed of the day when he would come to America and bring the perfect pizza to this country. That pizza would have to have the same thin wood-grilled crust and the same plump, juicy tomatoes ~ straight from the ashy fields of San Marzano. It would have to have freshly-made mozzarella, salty prosciutto, fragrant herbs and a perfect blend of seasonings. It would have to taste like home. That young, visionary man is Giuseppe Tomassini, the owner of Diversi Ristorante & Pizzeria on Rolfe Street in Cranston. Here at Diversi Ristorante & Pizzeria, Guiseppe’s dream is fulfilled, right down to all those essential imported ingredients. From the full-bodied stone ground flour to the sweet tomatoes and fruity olive oil, his cuisine is just how he imagined it. Even the four-ton brick oven that bakes his specialty pizzas in ninety seconds is imported from Italy. Tomassini’s attention to detail here at Diversi’s Pizzeria is impeccable, from the chic and edgy décor to the polished wood pallets that his food is served on. Sunlight filters through the large plate glass window and the restaurant is bathed in warm Tuscan oranges with ceiling beams the color of the Mediterranean Sea. Diners want to linger here, take in the ambience ~ and savor every bite of Giuseppe’s specialty pizzas. Pizza is not all that makes the menu at Diversi Ristorante & Pizzeria so unforgettable. The balsamic-glazed chicken wings are wildly popular as are the salads of crispy, fresh greens. There are crostinis, paninis, calzones and antipasti, all prepared with the same ingredients you would

Favorite toppings of cheese and tomatoes are popular, but so are such bold ingredients as peppery arugula, nutty Parmesan cheese, grilled butternut squash, Brussel sprouts, Portobello mushrooms and caramelized onions. In July, the menu expanded again to include pasta dishes which are made with the same culinary influences and ingredients that capture the essence of Guiseppe’s homeland. Diversi Ristorante also serves wine, beer and a broad selection of coffees to compliment any meal. There is even a separate kitchen dedicated entirely to gluten-sen-

sitive diners ~ with the exception of the calzones and desserts, all entrees are available gluten-free. To complete your dining experience, Giuseppe has assembled a menu of decadent and must-have desserts: tiramisu, crepes, focaccia alla Nutella, and tortino di mandorla. Diversi Ristorante & Pizzeria is located at 44 Rolfe Street. Reservations are only accepted for parties of ten or more. To order take-out, call 461-0789. The restaurant’s summer hours are Monday through Friday, 5:00pm until 10:00pm; Saturday & Sunday from 1:00pm until 10:00. Visit their website at www.diversipizza.com or find them on Facebook.
