How to choose an Orthopedic Surgeon

How to Choose a Skilled Nursing Facility Selecting a Skilled Nursing Facility for a loved one can be a very stressful and often very overwhelming experience, as well as relieving one once the right facility is found. Most importantly, when doing so make a list of what needs your loved one has that will provide them happiness and longevity. Skilled Nursing Facilities can provide Short-Term Rehabilitation as well as Long Term, Dementia, Hospice, and Respite Care. Depending on the needs of your loved one would help to determine what facility can best provide the most accurate and appropriate care. Take a tour of the potential facility. You should intuitively feel warmth and safety in this environment. This visit will provide you the opportunity to view the atmosphere and the morale of residents and staff. Is the facility clean and without odor? Are the residents socially engaged and appropriately dressed? Is the ratio between staff and residents suitable for needs to be met? Ask for a consultation with the admission staff member to have questions answered on the facility. Some significant questions would involve the financial aspect on what insurance would cover and for how long, private pay rates, and if the facility is Medicaid certified.

The right orthopedic surgeon will help heal injuries to your shoulders, hands, joints or knees. These medical professionals provide help for sports injuries or joint replacements. When you are having a major surgical procedure on your musculoskeletal system, it is essential to find the best medical professional for the job. Time, persistence and research can put you on the right path to recovery. Here are some tips to help you find the best surgeon for your needs. Recommendations Ask your primary care physician for the names of orthopedic surgeons. Your doctor is the best resource for finding a medical professional who can handle your case effectively. Other medical professionals in his practice might also be able to refer you. It is vital that you find a surgeon who specializes in what you need. For example, a man with a sports injury and an elderly person who needs a knee replacement will require two very different doctors. Request information about the surgeon’s background, where he attended medical school and where he did his residency. Many orthopedic specialists become experts at performing one or two types of procedures. Keep in mind that the more experience they have with cases like yours, the more likely you will have a good outcome after the procedure.

Inquire who the medical director is and what the nearest hospital is affiliated with the facility. Ask about outside services available within the facility such as hair care, banking, phone/television, laundry, and ancillary services of dental, podiatry, and optometry. Request information on visiting hours, availability to go to outside appointments and outings, as well as social activities and dining services. Remember this facility will become your loved ones home and all the comforts need to be accessible. Do your research! The Department of Health provides national quality information on nursing homes and allows you to compare the ranking of all nursing homes. Ask your physicians, senior centers, neighbors, family and friends for recommendations. Solicit outside input and impressions on whether a facility would be a good fit for your loved one. Most importantly, trust your intuition once you have gathered all your facts and made all your visits. Choosing a nursing Philosophy home is never easy when you love someone. It is often harder for the caregiver Qualified doctors don’t often share than the person in need of placement. the same philosophy when it comes Let that nursing home help to take care of your love one and in the end that nurs- to medical treatment. tients try other options -- such as physical therapy, dietary or lifestyle changes -- before performing surgery. Others think it is wiser to do surgery before a problem gets worse. At your initial consultation with an orthopedic surgeon, try to understand their medical philosophy. Think about whether it matches your expectations. The surgeon should make you feel comfortable and confident. A good bedside manner, with excellent knowledge, experience and communication, will make you feel more relaxed about your health care decisions. Full Spectrum

The best surgeons help you with preparation and recovery from your medical treatment. They do more than just perform an actual procedure. They will take the time to answer all your questions patiently and offer practical suggestions to help you hasten your recovery. As well, the doctor will look at your lifestyle to help you become healthier. He will not simply fix your broken or painful body part. Changing your lifestyle and taking better care of yourself may lessen the need for surgery in the future. Hospital Privileges

Surgeons must be allowed to operate in facilities. Different hospitals have different levels of technology and equipment. You will want to have the procedure done at a hospital that is equipped to fit your needs. If you prefer to have the surgery performed at a particular hospital, check to make sure the surgeon is approved to operate at the facility.

Ask the Local Produce Expert — Dave’s Marketplace Summer is here, and if you’re looking for the freshest fruits, vegetables, and locally grown produce, now is the time to find them at Dave’s Marketplace. In Rhode Island and throughout New England, many local farms raise fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs for neighborhood markets. These growers are dedicated to the quality and value of fresh food for their living. “We are in the perishable business – we want you to feel and smell how fresh everything is,” said Susan Budlong of Dave’s Marketplace. “We set this stage by having customers walk through our Produce departments first and foremost.” Picked at their peak, locally grown foods taste and look better, and with shorter times between the farm and table, it’s less likely that nutrients will be lost. Nearby farms often grow different varieties of crops to provide a longer harvest season and the best flavors. “Locally grown produce is generally only available about 12 to 14 weeks of the year,” said Budlong, who wants customers to know what they are eating. “We work hard to provide accurate signage for all our products – especially produce, seafood and meats.” Not only is local food safe and convenient, farmers and grocers who sell their products aren’t anonymous and take their responsibility to the consumer seriously. Locally produced food also supports communities, preserves open spaces and benefits the environment. “Our prepared foods are made either in our central commissary in East Greenwich or on site in our In Store Kitchens. All the meals are made with fresh ingredients – local ingredients whenever possible – and by hand,” said Budlong. “It really is

better than restaurant quality. We follow strict recipes for consistent quality measures – so what you purchase in Warwick, you can purchase in Wickford and have the same great taste!” Larger supermarket chains often do not cook or prepare meals on site using locally grown foods; most products are prepackaged in another facility and trucked in. Same with many other perishable products – chains have moved away from providing custom cut roasts, or hand-cut swordfish – many do not staff butchers, fishmongers, or chefs with the experience of handling locally grown or harvested products. “We like food, we enjoy buying it, selling it, preparing, and experimenting with it. We learned early on that food brings people together; it brings families together and it brings our communities together. Our families over the past 20 years have been hurried – sitting down to dinner isn’t the norm anymore,” said Budlong. “We strive to be part of every meal. To do that, we produce as many high quality foods – many of them comfort foods – that will allow you to enjoy dinner. And know that the food has been prepared fresh, with high quality ingredients. The quality and ingredients you would use if you made it yourself.” Shopping is a personal experience for most people, and while times are changing and the speed in which we live has increased, the availability of locally grown foods provides a connection consumers look for. “Our goal is to have all the items a family needs and wants – from the sale items to the staple items,” said Budlong. “We like the sense of community that Grocery Stores have – a meeting place to shop, have a cup of coffee and catch up with neighbors.”

How to choose an Auto Body Shop

choosing a Bowling Center Lang’s Bowlarama, located at 225 Niantic Ave., has been a staple in the Cranston community since opening on October 2, 1960. David and Richard Lang are 3rd generation owners of the business. Their father, Bruce, ran the alley for many years alongside his father, Edward, who realized his dream by opening the bowling alley. Recently they finished the new “Lang’s Lounge,” and converted the old lounge into a full-scale private event center with a full bar featuring local and craft beers. The Nelson Event Center was named for their founder, Edward Nelson Lang, it can be rented with or without bowling for all kinds of events from birthday parties to bridal showers. Lang’s Bowlarama hosts many fundraisers throughout the year for several different charities. They also donate regularly to recognized non-profits. Lang’s established the Ed Lang Memorial Scholarship Fund, in which they host an annual tournament that awards funds to college-bound bowl-

ers. Lang’s regularly hosts “Appy Hour” food specials and events such as black light bowling, complete with their own resident DJ. It is ideal for date nights or just a fun night out with friends and family. The entire location can also be rented out and holds up to 125 people, which can make for quite the memorable party experience. Lang’s is appropriate for people of all ages and abilities and is accessible to people in wheelchairs. In 2015 Lang’s celebrated their 55th anniversary with several events throughout the year, including unveiling a “My Little Town” ornament. The bowling alley is fortunate enough to have an amazing staff, with General Manager Carl DeRosa at the helm. The Lang brothers are committed to continually improving their family legacy. Lang’s Bowlarama was leased to a corporate bowling franchise for a period of time until the Lang brothers reacquired the business in 2012.

Anyone who has experienced a car accident knows that it can be a calamitous event. Once you have dealt with any resulting health issues, you will have to contend with damage to your automobile. Whether your car has experienced significant damage or simply a scratch, it is vital to find an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable. Even the smallest accident can throw your schedule into disarray. A good auto body shop will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are a necessary part of life for most people. Once you have a list of names, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. If your social network doesn’t have good recommendations, consult the Yellow Pages, advertising supplements or the Internet. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone. Describe the problem and listen for the response. If the person seems knowledgable and friendly, keep that shop on the

list. However, if the person seems rushed and uninterested, it can mean the shop is very busy. It might also have poor customer service. Eliminate them from your list. When you have chosen an auto body shop, visit their store. Check for prices, certifications guarantees. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car. They should have previous satisfied customers with whom you can contact. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Quality auto body shops should be able to complete an entire job onsite. Our cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans get us to work on time, back and forth to school and transport our families to and from their destinations. Choosing a great auto body shop is important for yourself and your family. The right auto body shop will have superior customer service, great prices and excellent quality of work.

Financial counseling and building community

How to Choose a Transmission Repair Shop The transmission is an important part of your car. Without a good transmission, the car will not run properly. Fluid in the transmission lubricates shifts. This fluid needs to be replaced periodically to keep the transmission working. It is a common problem, one that is easily preventable. Sometimes breakdowns occur even if you are using clean transmission fluid. Finding a quality transmission repair shop will help you keep your car in good working order.

RALLYING SUPPORT: Greenwood Credit Union members support many local causes. Here Kim Green, Doreen Katowicz and Sarah Khoury gather at the food drop off for the RI Community Food Bank. Community. It’s the word that best defines Greenwood Credit Union. Greenwood with offices at 2669 Post Road has been a part of Warwick since 1948. It has grown with Warwick and now has 57,000 members and assets of more than $456 million. It also has helped Warwick grow and continues to do so through its financial counseling services, mortgage programs and services for small businesses. Its investment into community covers the spectrum from support of the Rhode Island Academic Decathlon, Rhode Island Community Food Bank to Mentor Rhode Island and Warwick youth teams. Greenwood Credit Union is also run by the community. Its board of directors, chaired by Thomas F. Ahern, includes John Bamford, Karen S.D. Grande, Esq., Peter D’Orsi Jr., Dr. Kathleen Hittner, Anthony Marouchoc, Sandra Powell, Philip Slocum and Marianne Varatta. While Greenwood Credit Union operates from a single location, its footprint can be national. Greenwood offers 24-7 online banking with all of its products available by electronically and through smartphones. It also offers mobile banking.

At Greenwood Credit Union, members are not numbers or simply viewed as transactions. They are neighbors and in many cases have been members for years. The aim of the Greenwood staff is to help and that can happen in many forms from advising on a car or student loan to opening a savings account for a grandchild. Frederick Reinhardt is the president/ CEO. He came to GCU in 2016 with more than 30 years of diverse, senior level banking experience. Prior to GCU he was the chief lending officer of Navigant Credit Union, where he was also a member of the Credit Union’s Credit committee, Asset/Liability committee and Risk committee. His prior experience includes serving as senior vice president of Fleet National Bank’s Precious Metals Group. He also served as vice president of Old Stone Bank in the Commercial Real Estate and Retail Banking Groups. He will be at the helm as the credit union enters its 70th anniversary of doing what it does so well - a viable financial institution that meets the needs of its members and continues to build community.

Look for a shop that encourages proper maintenance Proper maintenance is key to ensuring the longevity of your transmission. After every 30,000 miles, you should have it serviced or cleaned to prevent problems. Good shops provide a power flush to remove and replace all transmission fluid. Some car manufacturers recommend servicing the transmission after every 50,000 miles. Many car owners have discovered that it is simply not often enough. It costs so much to replace a transmission that it is often financially smarter to just buy another car instead. That is exactly what automakers are hoping you will do. Err on the side of caution and replace your transmission fluid regularly. Search for properly trained specialists You will save yourself much time and money if you search for a repair shop with a good track record. Some shops require multiple visits before the work is done correctly. Mechanics at the best repair shops are properly trained to fix a wide variety of transmissions. Do not use a general auto repair shop or dealer service for transmission repairs. It will cost you more money because they will have to subcontract with a transmis-

sion specialist to do the job. Save money by going to the transmission shop yourself.

Choose a credible repair shop The Better Business Bureau can also give you information about poor performing shops in your area. That organization keeps a record of complaints lodged against them. If you are considering a national chain, the Bureau of Consumer Investigations will also inform you about which stores are not reputable.

Determine the type of repair work to be done Transmission work is time consuming and difficult. Professionals must remove the transmission from the vehicle. That can cost about $500 even before any other work is started. Minor transmission repairs could require the entire transmission to be rebuilt. There are only two options for repairing a transmission: remanufacturing or rebuilding. Remanufacturing remakes the transmission from used cores and replaces all moving parts. It is the equivalent to purchasing a whole new transmission. Rebuilding a transmission replaces worn-down parts. It is the most common transmission repair.

Prepare for hefty repair costs Because basic labor itself is expensive, it often makes more sense to completely rebuild your transmission rather than fixing minor issues periodically. This price will depend on the complexity and the extent of the rebuild. Remanufactured transmissions are expensive. The standard rebuilt transmission usually offers a one-year/12,000-mile warranty. For a remanufactured transmission, the standard warranty is threeyear/100,000 miles.

Selecting a Septic Service Your septic system is one of the most critical components to your home. When it is working properly it is easy to forget about it. But when it breaks you won’t be able to think of anything else. Choosing a septic service repair company will help you maintain your system. Choose a qualified company before there is a crisis. Thinking ahead will save you possible time and grief later. QUALIFICATIONS Working on a septic system is not something that a general handyman can do. Finding a qualified professional company will ensure that the maintenance or repair is being done properly. Reputable companies only employ highly trained people who understand how to work around the dangerous chemicals in the septic system. Following proper procedures will prevent damage to your tank as well as your yard. Professionals avoid digging up your yard while doing their work. They can accomplish normal maintenance with minimal damage. BUDGET Budget is always a concern, especially these days. Keep in mind that your septic system is an essential part of your house. There should be no delay in maintaining it. If a price for service seems too good to be true, it probably is. Selecting the cheapest service is not usually the best decision. The work might prove to be unacceptable. They might also use unqualified workers to perform professional services. Using low-quality services could cost you twice as much. After all, you will need a professional to clean up the mess of the low-quality predecessor. KNOWLEDGE OF SEPTIC SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Understand the maintenance that needs to be completed on your system. Cut down the cost of a standard pumping by locating the pump-out hatches prior to the company’s arrival. Otherwise, you are paying the work-

ers an hourly rate to perform manual labor tasks such as digging for the hatches themselves. Before the company arrives on your property, you should have an understanding about the services they are performing. Are they simply pumping the tank and removing sewage or do you need maintenance services as well. Sometimes, septic companies will perform additional services along with routine pumping. It might cost more than standard services, but these services will help you maintain your system and give you peace of mind. SELECTING A SINGLE PROVIDER A one-stop shop is always better than hiring multiple companies. Avoid confusion by hiring a single company to perform multiple services. They will often give you a price break for the work. You can find good septic repair companies by searching your local newspaper classifieds or a phone book. Social media sites will also tell you about companies in your area. Websites will provide general information, company philosophy and perhaps even cost figures. Your best option, however, is to get a referral. Ask family and friends whom they have used. Strong referrals can save you thousands of dollars and endless hours of frustration. When you have a list of companies, select two or three of them. Contact the companies and ask questions. How long will it take to complete the job? What are the possible solutions to your problems? Have they done similar work in he past? How long does the repair usually last? Most importantly, get quotes in writing. They should spell out exactly how much the services will cost. Of course, request a copy of all receipts related to the repair when it is completed. Many companies might tell you that they can’t guarantee a price until they begin the repair. That’s fine, as long as you understand the added costs you might incur if additional issues are found with your septic system.

How To Create a Healthy Smile As a general dentist, I get asked on a daily basis by patients, “How can I make my smile more esthetic?” To most patients, they assume that a whiter tooth shade is the answer, and indeed in some cases this can inspire a boost of self confidence. There are various options regarding teeth whitening; over the counter whitening strips can be effective, but oftentimes irritate the gingiva (gum tissue) and fail to evenly alter the shade of the teeth, especially the areas where teeth are in contact or may overlap slightly. There are take home whitening trays, which are custom made for each individual patient, to be used in combination with a “bleaching” gel. A small amount of gel is placed in the whitening trays and worn by the patient for typically one hour per day. In two weeks the teeth are generally brighter. In office whitening options also tend to utilize a “bleaching” gel, but in a much stronger concentration. While typically providing the quickest and safest results, this option is also most likely to create tooth sensitivity. Of course, tooth whitening is not for everyone. Some people become sensitive very quickly, even when low-concentration gels are used. Besides, whitening isn’t always the key to an esthetic smile. Sometimes crowding and overlap need to be addressed. When anterior teeth flare out or overlap, they are more apt to develop staining and color change because they are more difficult to keep clean. This may be a case where orthodontic intervention, such as Invisalign or other clear retainers, is useful in killing two birds with one stone: the teeth are moved into proper alignment, and they become easier for the patient at home to keep them clean. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the best way to create and maintain a healthy smile is to care for you periodontium. The periodontium is the bone and gum tissue that is the foundation for all teeth. Think in terms of an architectural building…you wouldn’t build an expensive structure on top on a shaky foundation right? It is this way in dentistry as well, and it is why even relatively straight-forward periodontal procedures, such as scaling and root planing, are the

first step in “designing” a beautiful smile. Regular dental upkeep that includes prophylaxis and scaling and root planing help to eliminate unhealthy “pockets” around teeth that harbor bacteria, thereby lowering the total bacterial count within your oral cavity. Lower bacterial counts mean less likelihood of tarter and plaque buildup that stain teeth, jeopardizing a clean looking smile. In addition to eliminating pocketing around teeth, gingival inflammation and bleeding will be reduced, and so the red color of your gums will gradually turn a healthy-looking pink shade. This is important; after all, the “esthetic zone” is not just limited to the teeth, but it includes anything that can be seen when in full smile, including the lips and gingiva. Remember, a healthy smile is an esthetic smile. There is more that goes into the process than simply whitening one’s teeth. Proper alignment and care for bone level and tissue health are major factors in creating a look that will fuel one’s self-confidence. At Johnston Dental Group, we take a holistic approach to optimizing one’s appearance and creating a healthier dentition. Come receive the attention that you deserve and obtain the individualized care that it takes in order to obtain your esthetic goals!

Hosting an event can be exciting, but also VERY stressful! It is important to consider locations that are equipped to help you with the many facets that are involved in achieving a successful event, without any additional anxiety. Full-service venues can be especially helpful when planning an event, since they would have access to a team of reliable and trusted vendors. A knowledgeable in-house Chef can also make the difference between an ordinary event and an extraordinary experience. It is a good idea to arrange ahead of time, for a tasting of the specific menu that you are interested in offering your Guests. Not only can you ensure that your choices are suitable for the type of event that your are planning, but you can also take that opportunity to discuss with the Chef any concerns that you may have, such as special dietary requests, food allergies, etc. You should feel comfortable with the staff, and also feel as though your needs are being met without hesitation. You need people who will work with you to create that perfect event, and address promptly any concerns that you may have. Staff should be friendly, helpful and accommodating at all times, and if they are unable to fulfill a specific request, they should be able to explain why in a respectful manner. Don’t hesitate to ask for suggestions from experienced and qualified staff. After all, they are most familiar with the venue, and will know what works and what doesn’t. Not only will your event run seamlessly, you will be able to enjoy yourself too. It is imperative that you receive a final detailed contract or banquet event order that clearly details the itinerary, catering and bar requirements, as well as the layout of the rooms, line

selections, audio/visual rentals, décor specifications and such, at least two weeks in advance of the event. This will give you an opportunity to review your decisions, and make any changes if necessary. The Imperial Room at One Rhodes Place, founded in 2000, is an elegant banquet facility suitable for all types of occasions. Whether planning a conference, wedding, or other special event, it is imperative that you take into account the needs of your Guests. We pride ourselves on offering exemplary catering, complimentary event planning and excellent service to our Guests! In addition to offering outstanding in-house catering and friendly, professional service, our venue offers elegant décor, plentiful off-street parking, and fully handicapped accessible facilities. The Imperial Room is available year-round, and is centrally located in the historic Edgewood/ Pawtuxet area of Cranston. The Rhode Island Shriners are a well-known philanthropic organization. The fraternal organization operates 22 Shriners Hospital for Children, specializing in burn, orthopaedic, cleft lip and palate, and spinal injury care. All care provided at the Shriners Hospitals for Children is TOTALLY WITHOUT COST to the patient and their family. Please note that proceeds from the use of The Imperial Room are for the benefit of The Rhode Island Shriners, and are not tax-deductible. However, by hosting your event at The Imperial Room, you help to defray the building expenses, where our charity and hospital office are based. Our members are active in the community, and you will often find them volunteering for many organizations, in additional to their own.

choosing Appliances and an Appliance Retailer

All You Need To Hear Hearing Aid Center

For more than fifty years, Gil’s Appliances, a family-owned and operated retailer with locations in Bristol and Middletown, has been proudly serving customers in RI and Southeastern Massachusetts. Co-owners and sisters, Lisa Sienkiewicz and Gail Parella, continue a tradition of trust, integrity, and value started by their parents in 1961. At Gil’s, “family-owned” is more than an advertising slogan. Their commitment to the core values upon which their business was founded all those years ago, a dedication to the ongoing success and growth of Gil’s in a changing retail world, and their community involvement certainly qualifies Lisa and Gail as local experts in their field.

Nancy Fox began her career in the hearing aid business in 1999 as a receptionist for a local hearing aid center. Now she is the proud owner of All You Need To Hear Hearing Aid Center in Garden City Center, Cranston. This office is her first Rhode Island office, having been based in Connecticut previously. Raised in the City of Cranston, she feels like it’s great to come home. All You Need To Hear Hearing Aid Center is proud to be a member of the Starkey Family of hearing aid fitters. Of the five or six major manufacturers, Starkey is the only American company. Nancy offers many styles and sizes of instruments. Pricing is very reasonable. She even accepts trade-ins of working hearing aids. The hearing aid center is located in Garden City Center at the Post Office Plaza on Midway Road. “Most folks don’t realize how many businesses are located inside this plaza! There is a realtor, a physical therapist, pension fund offices, attorneys, and many, many more businesses. Even the Cranston Chamber of Commerce is located here. It’s a great facility with ample parking, and is completely handicap accessible.” Nancy shared with us that her favorite thing about her business is the

Gail and Lisa When asked to weigh in on selecting an appliance store and purchasing appliances, Lisa and Gail had some helpful advice. They note that consumers today have so many options when it comes to where they make their appliance purchases. Choices range from big box stores to online retailers and smaller, locally owned appliance stores. In order to determine which is best for you, it is important to consider the following: price, selection, service, and delivery. For many consumers, price is their first consideration. And establishing a

budget for your project, whether you are shopping for an entire kitchen suite or replacing just one appliance, is a good place to start. One common misconception is that the larger the store, the better the price. This is definitely not the case as many locally owned appliance stores such as Gil’s belong to large buying groups that give them the same, and in some cases better, buying power for price and selection than big box and warehouse stores. Also, always ask your appliance retailer about available rebates that can save you money on different appliance brands. For even better pricing, consider kitchen or laundry brand packages. Selection is also important. In order to choose the best appliance for your style, space, and budget, research different appliance brands online and then visit a showroom where you can see the products up close. Information on brand reliability, style options, and unique features is readily available online and can help to narrow the search for the perfect product(s) for your space. Customer service is arguably the most important consideration when choosing an appliance store for your purchases. While researching appliances online is a good idea to get the process started, consider the benefit of shopping locally where you can rely on more personalized service before, during, and after the sale. You can check out business review sites for customer feedback and retailer ratings. Lisa and Gail note that customer service is the most important aspect of their business and the knowledgeable team at Gil’s focuses on providing exceptional service to every customer, every day. Also, some retailers provide in-house repair services while others, like Gil’s, work with an outside team of manufacturer-trained technicians. Delivery is another key consideration when purchasing appliances. Inquire about delivery options and any fees that may be incurred. Is installation of your appliance available? Gil’s offers free local delivery, free removal of your old appliance, and free normal installation, but it is important to check with the store for details as some exceptions do apply. Happy shopping!

How to choose a Real Estate Agency A reputable realtor and real estate agency can make a big difference when it comes time to buy or sell a home. There are thousands of dollars at stake. You could get the asking price or maybe you will have to settle for the best offer on the table. A real estate agency will act in your best interests. That’s why it’s essential to find a high-quality real estate agency. Reputation says a lot about a company. What do people say about their services? Ask your family, friends and neighbors for recommendations. Their experiences will guide you toward a reputable agency. Once you have a list of possibilities, do some research. Find out how long the agency has been in business. Ideally, you want people who know your community. If the real estate agency is merely a side business, it might not give you the best results. Buying and selling homes is a full time job. Look on the Internet and read customer service reviews. They should also have an impact on your overall impression of an agency. Once you have narrowed your list, contact some businesses and ask them questions. You should know about their listings, fees and commissions. Choose an agency that has connections with the community, a sharp understanding of neighborhoods that interest you, and solid contacts with other realty companies. This assumes major importance when you’re selling your current house, because the agency usually handles the sale while the realtor helps

you find your new one. The marketing strategy and advertising is what makes each agency unique. It will greatly influence the sale of your home. Although most companies might look the same, real estate agencies have a preference for the kind of properties they show or sell. These concentrations might include commercial properties or high-end homes. Try to find a business with a focus that concentrates on selling homes similar to yours. Look at an agency’s listings to see if your home would fit in nicely with their existing clients. If you were purchasing a home, would you find their listings easy to read and informative? Be prepared to ask an agency the following questions if you are selling your home: • How will you advertise my home? Will you use the Internet and newspapers? • How many pictures of my house will appear online? • On which sites will my home be featured? • Do you have other homes that have recently been sold in this price range? • How long has the agency been selling homes in my neighborhood? • What makes your agency unique? The two biggest financial decisions you will make in your lifetime are buying and selling a home. Protect your investment and peace of mind by choosing the best and most trustworthy real estate agency you can find.

Selecting the Best Retirement Community for Your needs These days, more Americans are remaining active into their retirement years. They are searching for communities that match their lifestyles and goals for relaxed living. If you are in the market for a retirement community, there are plenty of things to consider. This retirement community will hopefully become your home. It is important to choose a vibrant place, with plenty of parking and recreational activities. Here are some aspects to consider before making a financial commitment. Community Activities and Parking Many senior citizens want to keep their energy levels up during their retirement years. They are more health conscious and see how an active lifestyle leads to a long life. Many seniors enjoy golf, tennis, swimming and walking. Any prospective retirement community should have easy access to such activities. Other seniors enjoy arts and crafts, board games, dancing and organized activities. Taking part in social events can provide opportunities to make new friends. Research what kinds of events are organized within the retirement community. Also, find out if the community has ample opportunities for residents to travel to theaters, museums or shopping malls together. Parking is another important factor when choosing a retirement community. Most people enjoy having family and friends visit, so parking is a necessity. When parking is tight, visitors will be less likely to come. Do not overlook its importance. Medical Care Facilities Retirement communities should be easily accessible to emergency personnel. Know the location of the closest hospitals, doctors, ambulance services and other personnel. You may wish to restrict your search to communities located near your preferred physician or other service providers. Any prospective community should have a formal emergency plan in place. In addition, check to see if the retirement unit has custom safety features, such as railings

in the bathrooms and entranceways. Pet Policies Pet policies are another feature to consider when investigating potential retirement communities. Some facilities will allow you to bring your pet to live with you while others will not. So if you have a pet you don’t want to leave behind, you may be able to bring it with you. Many communities now recognize the health benefits of having pets. Additionally, a park or nearby dog walkWhether you are liquidating a busiing area will benefit you and your animal ness, settling an estate, or just looking companion, particularly if your pet re- to downsize by getting rid of some unquires daily exercise. HELP Don’t be afraid of getting expert advice. Even the most experienced housepainters sometimes need guidance. That’s where a quality paint store comes in. Not only will the best stores sell good products, they will also have staff people who are ready to offer suggestions

Where do you begin? As a Realtor, I would suggest starting with the advice of a professional. How do you find a Realtor who will help you reach your goals? Often times, we know someone in the business, maybe a friend or relative. Is it wise to work with family? Will my Realtor friend be the best resource for me? Perhaps, if that person is the best one for the task at hand. Here are some questions to ask yourself… 1. Is the Realtor a full time, or part time worker? 2. How successful is that person? 3. Does that person have positive testimonials from past clients? Interview several to compare how well you interact with them. Ask questions that are pertinent to your specific needs and goals. You should feel comfortable about your confidence in that person. You will spend a good amount of time with your Realtor, it is important that you are comfortable talking about your personal situation. Your Realtor should be attentive, listening to your specific desires and goals. There are standard tasks that all realtors should perform… For listings…complete paperwork, take pictures, submit the listing in mls, be available to show your home. For buyers…meeting the buyer for a consultation prior to starting, providing the financial, and procedure expectations. Setting up your specific search criteria so you receive email alerts when properties come available for you, and coordinate showings to visit. Assist in a strategy to making an offer on a prop-

SELECTION You can choose from an enormous variety of paint colors and textures. Oil-based and latex paints are available in a wide range of finishes and compositions. They are also available in different grades. Cheaper paint may be thinner, messier and harder to apply than its thicker, premium competitor. You will also have to determine if you want to work with a primer. Some brands require specific primer, while other brands have products that are “paint and primer in one.” A good paint store will have far more than just one line of products. They will stock paint designed for concrete floors, industrial paints that can withstand certain temperatures or chemicals, paints that will reduce mold growth. It may seem overwhelming, but more choices will give you better results and hold up over time. Knowing your specific priorities and considerations will help guide you toward the right paint for your project.

and recommendations for your particular situation. They are very knowledgeable about their products. They should also offer tips on how to apply the paint. You can spend money on high-end paint products, but applying them incorrectly will give you terrible results. The paint store you choose should be able to offer you expert advice on all aspects of your project, from product selection to prep work and clean-up.

DESIGN With so many color and style selections, a good paint store can offer design advice for getting the look you want. When it comes to paint, there are endless possibilities, and the best paint store staff will help you navigate through the selections. They will know the latest style trends and offer recommendations for color palettes that work well together. If you bring them a fabric swatch, they should be able to create a duplicate color in paint. Choosing the right paints and accessories takes experience and -- quite often -- some trial and error. Be certain to get prices for mixing sample colors up front. Don’t be afraid to put small quantities of these sample colors on your walls to test out your design. Once you’ve selected the right colors, go back to the store to purchase larger quantities of the paints to complete your project. The Color House, founded in 1963 is known for excellent service, quality and product knowledge. They currently have 3 locations; North Kingstown, Wakefield and their original store in Cranston, but they hope to continue to add additional locations in the future. At that time they specialized in rooftop balloons and delivering balloon “bouquets” with singing telegrams. After a request from one of their now larger clients they decided to expand into the sign business. In 1999 they opened a store front/production facility in Cranston under the name of BORI Graphix, which they quickly outgrew, because of their volume of business. In May of 2013 they moved to a 5000 square foot facility on Knight Street in Warwick, which more than doubled their size. This space offers a cohesive work environment, with a separate design room, reflecting the personal style of each of the four designers within their workspaces. With this larger facility they have been able to expand their business to a full service sign shop. One of the notable advancements is that they now have a facility large enough to accommodate vehicles that are getting wrapped or lettered. In the past this type of customer order would be at the mercy of the weather. Because of the 2 loading docks and overhead door in the Knight Street facility, these requests are now able to be carried out much more efficiently. In addition to wrapping all types of vehicles (cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, buses, boats and planes), they can also wrap guns, helmets, walls and more… “At BORI Graphix we combine exceptional graphic design with professional quality printing to produce high-impact signs for our valued clients.” BORI offers all types of quality custom signage, as well as banners, decals,

indoor and outdoor murals, wall art and other large format printing. They deal with mostly small to medium businesses, but also have a few Fortune 500 companies as their clients. Their main focus is unbeatable customer service; and they pride themselves on providing a quality product completed on time. “From signs and banners to magnets and bumper stickers our team

offers a wide selection of products, all designed and printed just for you.” BORI continues to operate as a family run business with Gary and Denise at the helm. Their involvement in the community includes sponsorships of local church groups and sports teams. Moving forward they hope that one day their children will take over, and carry on their legacy that they’ve

worked so hard to build and maintain over the past 3 decades. BORI Graphix is located at 11 Knight Street, Building E-18 in Warwick. For more information call 401921-8485 Check out their website – www.BORIGraphix.com or visit them on Facebook – Facebook.com/ BORIGraphix

How to choose Alzheimer's Care A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia can be devastating, but supporting a loved one who has been diagnosed with compassion and informed decision-making is the greatest service a family or life partner can provide. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease for which there is no cure. At some point in a person’s Alzheimer’s journey, they will require specialized care for a variety of reasons, but often times the primary concern is because they are no longer safe at home. This happens no matter what precautions one has taken to provide an Alzheimer’s friendly home.

The Caregivers Disease don’t wait until there’s a crisis Alzheimer’s is often called the “caregivers disease” because of the tremendous burden experienced by the primary giver who often experiences chronic sleep deprivation and other stress related health concerns. Many people put off doing their research until there is some type of crisis either with the caregiver or the person with Alzheimer’s requiring greater care than what can be provided at home. In choosing Alzheimer’s care, it is imperative that one begins the research process before help is needed. By researching ahead of need, you can make a better decision when the time comes.

What can I do now? What tools do you need to make an informed decision and how should you go about it? First, understand that the very best facilities are solely dedicated to providing “Memory Care”. In RI, Memory Care Assisted Living Residences have a special license issued by the Department of Health for “Special Care”. There are many requirements to achieve this level of licensure but to name a few: the Residence has been designed to provide a secure environment appropriate for the resident population, as well as staffing, training and therapeutic activities appropriate for it’s residents.

Continuum of Care Different people require different levels of care. Most people with Alzheimer’s or Dementia will be appropriate for Memory Care Assisted Living, but there are those who are considered medically complex who may require a higher level of care. Try and find a

Memory Care Assisted Living Residence that offers a continuum of care to Skilled Nursing if needed.

Research Word of mouth can be a source of good information. The Internet has lots of information- take your search past the first page and dig deep. Review websites, consumer feedback and other available information. Stay away from websites that promise to refer you to properties. Many of them charge a fee to the facility in exchange for the referral and you are likely to find just as much information on your own. Once you see a few that you like and have examined their websites, look for a Facebook page and examine the content to get a feel for the place. Make a list of your top five places that you want to look at. Be willing to travel a further distance in certain instances for the best care. Call each place and arrange a visit. Some advisors will recommend that you show up unannounced however; you are taking a chance of not being able to obtain the information you need and may have to make a second trip.

Visit While visiting the Residence, look around- not just at the existing Residents and the physical environment, but also at the staff. Ask what features of the residence have been designed specific to a person with Alzheimer’s. Ask about the Activity Program. Request a dining menu. Talk with your tour guide about challenges they have faced in the past and how they work with families to resolve them. Do you feel comfortable with the residence and the people you’ve met? Are they the kind of people you know you’ll be able to speak with if there’s ever a problem?

Relax Once you’ve made a decision about the right place for your family member or beloved partner, speak with the admission team and create a transition plan. You’ll imagine the worst, and you will most likely be pleasantly surprised how well your loved one responds when they move to a specialized Alzheimer’s residence. The beauty is that they will be in a secure environment and well cared for. Your stress level will subside because once you find the right place, you can take a deep breath, leave the role of caregiver behind and again resume the role of husband, wife, partner, brother, sister, daughter, son, friend.

Not all bookstores are created equally, and that’s a good thing. Certainly there is a purpose for the bigbox Barnes & Nobles of the world, and now the Amazon stores. But if you are looking for a bookstore brimming with indie flair and steeped within the community it serves, then your local, independently owned book shop is the place for you. We at Barrington Books strive to be THE place to go for the very best in books, toys and gifts in the two distinctly different areas we serve. The books we stock are a reflextion of the tastes and reading habits of our customers, not just the mainstream best sellers you find in chain stores, although we carry them, too. Our staff is not only friendly, but knowledgable and loves the challenge of finding just the right book or gift for you. We also know when to let you ‘just browse’ as there’s a lot to take in while experiencing our carefully curated offerings. And that’s what sets us apart from the rest; it’s all about the experience. Whether its finding magic while taking in one of our three weekly story hours under either of our fantastical trees that centerpeice both stores, or the unexpected surprise of a vintage car at the entrance of our new location in Garden City, strategically placed there just to put a smile on your face, shopping at Barrington Books is an adventure each time you visit. Did you know that we offer complimentary gift wrapping all year round? Or that we have live music on the weekends during the holidays as our ‘thank you’ to our customers to enjoy as they shop? After 31 years serving the East Bay

of RI, and now almost two years on the West Bay, we’re proud of the community partnersips we’ve fostered. Whether it’s through our robust author and author-less events calendar, or through the relationships created with local schools and organizations, working with and giving to the community is key to our success.

So, don’t take our word for it, come experience for yourself what it’s like to shop Barrington Books at either of our two great locations and see how we’ve earned the title Best Independent Bookstore Statewide and Best Kids Toy Store Statewide two years running! How to Choose a Certified Optician

Selecting the Best Eye Doctor Eye exams are one of the most crucial things you can do to ensure your health and happiness. Even if you don’t have any noticeable trouble with your eyesight, it is still important to have a routine examination. Getting your eyes checked makes it possible to discover vision issues early, when they are easier to treat. Catching and treating eye problems early will likely lead to better outcomes. Choosing the right ophthalmologist can be a challenge. Consider these aspects when doing your research. INSURANCE If you have health or vision insurance, check the list of doctors who are covered by your plan. Insurance companies make agreements with doctors or eye care specialists to deliver services as a prearranged price. Picking an “in-network” doctor will save you money on your co-pay and out-of-pocket costs. TYPES OF DOCTORS Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who treat eye diseases. They have a full medical degree along with their specialized training for eye treatment. Their extensive background typically includes four years of pre-med school, four years

If you are having trouble with your eyeglasses or contacts, there is no need to tolerate the discomfort. It is important to fix the problem right away. A certified optician can help you. Choosing the right professional will make a big difference in your quality of life. When your glasses or contacts are uncomfortable or your optical prescription isn’t followed precisely, then your eyewear isn’t going to do its job. That’s why it’s important to choose the right optician. Certification Filing vision prescriptions is a complex job that requires frequent training. Lens materials and manufacturing procedures are constantly changing and improving. A certified optician should be abreast of industry standards. Ask what certifications your optician holds in your state, along with what kind of training he or she has received. Certified opticians understand they are in a high-precision job. They should appreciate that you are taking the time to ask questions.

Comfort The best opticians will guide you toward products that are easy to use and maintain. Comfort levels vary according to each person. Some people prefer metal frames, while others like the look and feel of plastic frames. Opticians will adjust the fit of your frames so they are not too tight or loose on your face. If your current glasses are leaving red marks on your face, they need to be adjusted. The glasses should not feel awkward or bothersome on your nose or behind your ears. If you have contact lenses, you should feel comfortable wearing them. Proper cleaning is crucial. Your optician can help recommend the best products that will help maintain your contact lenses. An assistant will likely demonstrate the proper cleaning technique. Anyone who wears glasses or contacts knows the importance of eyewear. How to Choose the Right Landscaper A well-landscaped yard, cared for by a professional, will increase the value of your home and property. There is nothing like looking out the window to see beautifully maintained grass. Blooming flowers, rocks and moss will give your surroundings beauty and a feeling of warmth. If you are in the market for a landscaper, consider these tips. Types of Landscapes There are usually five types of landscaped yards. Each requires the landscaper to have a different skill set. It is best to determine which landscape appeals to you before you begin your search for a quality professional. A formal garden uses many geometrical shapes in its design. Plants provide a focal point, making the yard appear balanced. To achieve this design, a landscaper will need to carefully prune hedges. An informal landscape looks like organized chaos. Plants appear to be placed randomly. Landscapers who use this design should be skilled at working with planters and urns. The landscaper uses the home as its focal point. All aspects of the yard will flow together with a landscaper with great knowledge of native plants and making them look their best. Set Your Budget Cost is always a concern when hiring a home improvement specialist. Set a budget and stick to it. Understand what you can afford and are willing to spend annually on your landscaping. It will help you prioritize your list so you can at least get your necessities. You might need to make sacrifices. If you need a new landscaping wall, you might have to delay getting a sprinkler system. On the other hand, if irrigation is a must, then you might need to cut back on how often your lawn is mowed each month.

Even if your budget is tight, don’t get discouraged. Some landscapers may charge less in order to get your business. Prioritize Your Needs Determining what you need will help you decide which services you require from a landscaping company. Most professionals offer the following: weekly or monthly lawn and garden maintenance, weed control, tree pruning and shaping, garden installations, inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems and possibly even the construction of retaining walls or other structures. Get Referrals Neighbors are sometimes the best way to get referrals. If you like what you see in their yard, ask them for their company’s name. Discuss the pros and cons of the service as well. You can even watch the company perform work. It will give you an idea about their employees and work habits even before contacting them. You could also do an online search for landscaping companies. Be sure to read reviews from prior customers. If you see many negative reviews for one company, move on to the next one on your list. Also check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for more information. If any complaints have been lodged against the company, the BBB will inform you. Consider Availability Availability is another factor when looking for a landscaper. One of the first questions to ask is how often the company will be available for maintenance. If you want to be home while the landscaper is working, make sure you can coordinate your schedule. Also consider community regulations. For example, if your town has noise regulations, ask each landscape company what they will do to adhere to them.

It happens every year. The calendar turns to August 1st, and as parents plan for back to school needs, they start to think about their child’s future education, especially if they are approaching high school. This is a time to consider what private and Catholic schools can offer you. “There are many good choices in RI for private schools, and it is important for parents to explore their options because each school offers something unique,” according to Catherine Solomon, VP for Advancement and Director of Admissions at Bishop Hendricken High School. Bishop Hendricken, located in Warwick, is an all-boys Catholic college preparatory high school with an enrollment of 950 boys in grades 8-12. Attracting young men from all over Rhode Island as well as nearby states, Hendricken was established in 1959 and has earned a premier reputation for academic excellence as well as successful arts, athletics and campus ministry programs. Choosing a school can seem like a lot of work, but Solomon suggests starting early – when your children are in 6th or 7th grade—and she recommends looking at each school’s value proposition: what opportunities are available that you can’t find elsewhere, what do their students look like upon graduation, and what is their college placement profile? Weighing the value of those outcomes against the tuition can help you to decide if the school is a good fit for your child. “At Hendricken, our mission is to bring each student into a closer relationship with God, and we do this through the education of the whole person – heart, mind, body and soul. We encourage each young man to discover his God-given talents and abilities, and push them to reach their potential.” Solomon, who has worked in both college and secondary school admissions for over 30 years, explains

that at Hendricken, boys become young men of character, faith and intellect who are going to be successful in college and their future careers, but who will also be responsible citizens who desire to give back to their communities as adults. Solomon also recommends visiting schools more than once in order to experience the school community in action. Attend an open house, sign your child up for a shadow visit, go to a play or sporting event. Each time you visit, you will probably see a little more of the culture, learn something new about what the school offers, and observe how students interact with faculty as well as each other. How do they behave at lunch, on the soccer field, or even greeting you when you walk in? Ask questions when you visit. Will your child need academic support for a learning difference, or if he’s bright, how many honors or advanced placement courses are offered? Is there differentiated learning, and how is technology incorporated into the curriculum? If your biggest concern is tuition cost, be assured that private schools do offer financial aid for students that does not have to be repaid. Solomon reports, “At Bishop Hendricken, 67% of our boys are on some form of tuition assistance, and in this past school year we awarded $1.6 million in grants and aid.” Most parents are going to consider location, facilities, academic placement and cost when it comes to choosing a private school. But more and more states Solomon, parents look to the added value that a faith-filled Catholic school can offer. “At Hendricken our students learn the value of respect, discipline, hard work and dedication – both in and out of the classroom! Our students grow into young men who are well prepared for their future.”

How to choose where you sell your gold and other valuables in three easy steps You have heard the commercials on the radio and seen the ads on TV shouting - “We pay the most for your gold and other valuables!!” You think about that box on your bureau full of your old jewelry or maybe you have inherited a bunch of antique jewelry items and coins but you have no idea what is real, what’s costume and worse yet how do you know where to go. When you think about pawn shops and gold buyers your mind flashes to every police TV drama show where the detectives are questioning some slimy store owner who is trying not to work with the police and you think to yourself - I have to deal with that? As daunting as you might think it is, selling gold and other valuables does not have to be a stressful project. First you want to find buyers who are certified in what they are buying. For gold and jewelry you want a store that has graduates of GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and for coins you want a certified numismatist (coin expert) from the ANA (American Numismatic Society). Buyers who have taken the time to become skilled and certified in their craft are less likely to try to make a fast buck by not letting you know the true value of your items. Here in Rhode Island gold buyers are only required to obtain a precious metals license - this only means that they don’t have an active criminal record and does not imply any skill or knowledge about the items that they are buying. People who buy out of their shop or who have no shop rarely can offer very good prices - these operators typically work with an established store and their commission/profit it typically around 30% - that’s 30% that you would likely have received in a reputable shop. Second you should first call the shops

that you plan to visit. Ask them if they can quote you on phone and explain the percentages that they pay for gold, silver and coins. If they are unwilling to give you prices you should consider why they might be evasive, especially if they are one of those buyers claiming to pay the most. They should be willing to explain the difference between 14k, 18k and gold filled. Buyers who won’t take costume and plated items are more likely to be only interested in the gold value and in most cases will not pay you for the diamonds and jewelry value of your item. Ask if they will give you a free written detailed offer for your items. Well run shops will gladly do this for you and they won’t mind if you shop around - we encourage it. Third - when you visit the store let your first impressions guide you. Does the owner greet you and look you in the eye? Can you find their posted buy prices and can you see their credentials on the wall or in plain view? Do you see items like the ones that you have for sale? If you have a coin collection but the store has no coins for sale chances are they are just in the business of flipping your collection for a quick profits to a better established coin store. Make sure you see the scale where your times are to be weighed. In Rhode Island the precious metals statues states “Dealers must weigh goods offered in view of seller”. If they are hiding the scale in the back or its turned away from you its a sure bet that’s not all they are hiding. The fines for operating this way are very low and rarely enforced. Once you have taken these steps you will find the experience to be a lot less stressful and you will be more at ease with your decision.

Purrfect Pet Care Purrfect Pet Care Service was born approx. five years ago in Putnam, Ct. Maree O’Brien, the owner/manager, poked and prodded at the Pet Sitting/Dog Training possibilities for the first few years, but seeing the need for a Professional Pet Care Service, that wasn’t a kennel, became more serious. “There are a lot of good Pet Sitters/ Walkers/Trainers out there but, the many of them are young people looking for seasonal work, adults wanting out of the house or those who just love animals and want to be around them. The last category, obviously, is the best group! I found that something was pretty much, always lacking. Either they had no one to cover if they got busy, didn’t want to work so many hours, spend the night at someone’s home, invest in Insurance and much more. I knew, from the very beginning, that having a qualified team to cover if I needed to be away, was sick or what have you would be a great asset to our clients and that no pet would go without service! Some folks may think that a big Pet Care Business would mean that we are not caring enough because we don’t have the time, but NOT TRUE! Having a staff that loves animals in addition to being hand selected and experienced with all types of pets is a great service to our clients. In addition, they know that we have invested much time and money to ensure that the best people will be able to care for and love their babies! So being successful in The Putnam and surrounding areas, I thought that bring our services and talent to other areas just made sense. So more professionals were hired and we were able to extend coverage to all of N.E. Ct and then pretty much the entire state! We now announce that we are very excited to bring PURRFECT PET CARE SERVICE to RI! As of today, we have two top Pet Professionals (native Rhode Islanders) oversee-

ing the State, serving new clients and scouting for the best Pet Care Professionals we can find! O’Brien, the owner of PURRFECT PET CARE SERVICE, has been involved with animals all her life, as a trainer, breeder and exhibitor of German Shepherd Dogs, Vet. Assisting, and managing a kennel. She started her own Boarding, grooming, training and day care center. After operating the Center for several successful years, she decided to sell it and retire. Well, I did sell it but retirement wasn’t very fulfilling. So I started pet sitting and training on a freelance basis. The rest is history. I have blessed to have a great family who always supported me, great Vets who recommend me and super clients, many who have become wonderful friends, for getting the word out! I look forward to meeting Rhode Islanders and their wonderful animals/pets. We are bonded, insured and background checked for your safety and peace of mind! Please contact us with any questions or to schedule a free meet and greet! You may reach us by phone or text at: 860-420-8646 or email at: gshep44@hotmail.com. We take all credit and debit cards and offer discounts for Seniors, Veterans, and long term commitments!

Best Methods for Selecting a Physician When it comes to your health, you want a physician that understands you and will be there for you whenever you need them. Finding a personal physician is an important step toward a healthier lifestyle. The best physicians offer you a cooperative relationship in an effort to monitor your health. They provide creative solutions to health issues, as well as informing you about basic information. Here are some elements to consider when you are searching for a new doctor. INSURANCE Often, your choice of doctors will be limited by your health insurance carrier. Insurance companies have contracts with individuals or group practices. It is highly likely that you cannot go outside of your insurer’s provider network without paying an additional fee. Your primary care doctor should be able to understand your medical needs, as well as offer you appropriate referrals should you need a specialist. It is possible that using a doctor outside your insurer’s primary care network may subject you to out-of-pocket expenses. Some insurance carriers do not impose restrictions on your choice of physicians. If you have this kind of policy, look to your local newspaper or online advertisements to find potential doctors in your area. MEETING YOUR NEEDS Experts recommend selecting a general practitioner to serve as your primary care physician. This professional might be an internal medicine doctor or a member of a family practice. Under some circumstances, it is better to select a doctor practicing within a particular specialty. Women might feel more comfortable with an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/ GYN) as a primary care physician. A pediatrician might be the primary care physician for children. Seniors could

even have a geriatric specialist for their primary care physician.

ASK FOR REFERRALS Friends, family and other trusted sources are the best way to find a new doctor. People will gladly give referrals when they have had positive experiences with their health care providers. They will also provide feedback when the experience was not to their liking. The American Medical Association or other professional physicians’ organizations in your area will be another useful resource. Prior to making a final decision, always confirm that your physician has a current license to practice with the state medical board. This licensing body will also tell you if he has any pending disciplinary action or complaints. Not every doctor accepts new patients. Once you have collected a list of possible physicians, contact them to make sure they will accept new patients, as well as the insurance you carry. Ideally, your first visit will include a routine physical examination and documentation of your medical history. But sometimes insurance carriers will decline payment for routine exams.

CONVENIENCE Convenience is another important factor when choosing a physician. His or her office should be easily accessible from your home or workplace. Ensure the doctor has admitting privileges at your preferred hospital in the event you need treatment. Ask where your physician can perform diagnostic tests and procedures. Some doctors might use a separate facility rather than their own offices. Finally, inquire how long it usually takes to book an appointment. When an emergency arises, you will want to know that your new doctor can meet you quickly.

Adoption from Foster Care Unemployed or Underemployed? A Rhode Island nonprofit is here to help. The decision to adopt a child is never one that comes without a great deal of consideration, education, conversation and more. Perhaps you have been considering adoption but aren’t sure where or how to begin. Let’s start with the types of adoption. Perhaps the more commonly known adoption routes include international adoption, domestic infant adoption and independent adoption. What many people don’t realize is there are many children right here in our own state who are looking for a forever family with whom to share their lives. Adoption from foster care involves children who are living in state care after having been removed from their home for reasons that can include abuse, neglect, death of a parent, etc. Although most typically are school-age children, generally between the ages of 5 and 18, an increasing number of younger children are coming in to care as well. While currently living in a foster or group home, these children deeply want a chance for love in a happy, permanent family setting. Answers to a Few Frequently Asked Questions Must I be married in order to adopt? No. Adoptions by single people are on the increase, and some children actually do best with a single parent. We encourage married and single adults of any race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation to apply to adopt a child from state care. It is more important that families that can make a life-long commitment to provide a safe, loving home to a child. Must adoptive parents meet age requirements? In Rhode Island you may adopt a child if you are over 21 years of age. There is no upper age limit, and adoptive parents in their 40s and 50s are quite common. What about infants? It is not often that infants are registered with Adoption Rhode Island. If you are interested in adopting an infant, either domestically or internationally a list of licensed adoption agencies can be found on our website at www.adoptionri.org. Adopting an infant can often involve a long wait and considerable fees.

How much does it cost to adopt a child from foster care? There is no fee to adopt a child in state care. The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) is a public agency and offers its adoption services free of charge. Furthermore, some children in DCYF care are eligible to receive subsidies until they are 18 or 21, depending on their needs.

Laura M. Krohn Elder Law Attorney Laura has dedicated herself to the practice of being a holistic Elder Law Attorney. Holistic Law is an evolving concept that is gaining in popularity as the needs of clients become more comprehensive. When asked what it means to be an “Elder Law” attorney, she responds by stating that it is an area of the law where “I address my client’s perspective from a holistic viewpoint by addressing more than just the legal issues. Instead, I address the legal and the medical, social, financial, and family issues. By doing so, I am advocating for the whole client.” This means that her office handles all the client’s needs, not just the transactional issues. If a client comes in for help with Medicaid, she will not only do the planning and the application, she also assists in finding nursing homes or home care agencies, as the case may be. When asked how she approaches each client, she states: “I consider each client’s health issues, family support system, finances, personal objectives and preferences, and then I match all of those dynamics to the resources available to the client. It may be basic estate planning to start, or it may be a mix of Hospice and Medicaid, or it may be private pay at an assisted living. Each case is very different and each client’s set of circumstances deserves to be treated as unique”. Laura believes this ensures that her clients are getting the emotional, physical and psychological support they need in addition to the legal support. “There is always comfort food and hot coffee. Clients are always greeted as they walk in and they are given an opportunity to relax in the waiting room before we meet. I feel as though clients should be an active participant in their legal planning. Upon meeting me, clients are given a notebook to carry with them to all future meetings. This is where they write down tasks I give them and notes that they are encouraged to take during our meetings. Clients are instructed to keep the notebook handy and to write down questions and concerns as they arise, so that they will not forget to bring them up at our next meeting. Each new client is also give a complementary Senior Resource Guide. It is an educational experience”. A holistic approach forms naturally when you couple a desire to help people, with a commitment to stay true to yourself and enjoy what you do every day. Elder Law encompasses so many different legal and non-legal issues that it would be impossible to practice successfully in the area without compassion and commitment. Laura concentrates in Estate Planning for all ages, including Trusts, Power of Attorney, and Wills, Medicaid and Asset Protection Planning, Care Coordination, Probate, and other legal and non-legal issues affecting the elderly, disabled and their families. She also offers Caregiver Support Group Meetings at Atria Harbor Hill, located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island every Thursday at 6PM.
