FUN FACT:

“Pineberries” are small white strawberries (which aren’t actually berries, but that’s another fun fact entirely) with red seeds. They have a subtle aftertaste of pineapple to those who can detect it.

• “Plastic grocery bags are handy for so many uses, but keeping them organized was always a pain, until I discovered that I could use an empty tissue box to store them. I just ball up each bag individually (so there is no air trapped) and stuff it in the tissue box. You can do the same thing for larger amounts of bags by using an empty 12pack box from soda. I store one of these in my shop.” — Fred C. from Pennsylvania

• It is possible to save a bit of money on car maintenance if you can’t change your own oil. Learn common add-ons you will be offered at oil and lube places. Air filters are surprisingly easy to replace on your own, and so are windshield wipers. Very often, the staff of auto-supply chains will lend you tools or even assist you right in the parking lot.

• If your kids (or you) like cereal, be sure to save the heavy plastic liners that hold the cereal inside the box. They are really handy when freezing meat patties in stacks. You can use them to separate layers of cookies, too.

• Got bug bites? Try these for some relief from the itching of insect bites: apple cider vinegar; a paste of baking soda and water, allowed to dry on the bite; a similar paste of meat tenderizer and water; or antiperspirant. Projects to Consider Doing Before Moving In

The day homeowners move into a new home is a unique experience. First-time home buyers may see such a day as the culmination of years of hard work, while those who are not new to the experience may find their new home is where they’ll spend the rest of their lives.

Move-in day is indeed a notable milestone, but there’s much homeowners can do between closing on a home and backing the moving truck into the driveway. In fact, it may be best for homeowners to complete several home interior projects while the residence is still empty.

Painting

Painting home interiors is among the more logical projects to consider before moving into a home. Simply put, an empty home is far easier to paint

than one filled with furniture and other items. Professional painters may even discount a project if they know they won’t have to cover and/ or move any furniture before and after applying paint. Painting before anyone has moved in also saves residents the discomfort of living in a home overcome by the lingering aroma of drying paint. Simply open the windows and let the home air out throughout each painting session.

Flooring

Flooring projects are another undertaking to consider before moving in.

Whether you’re tearing up old carpet and replacing it with new carpet, refinishing wood floors, or installing a wholly new floor, each task is considerably easier if there is nothing on the floor. Flooring projects are best left to the professionals, and

labor costs may drop considerably if contractors don’t have to pause to move furnishings or work around other items.

Deep cleaning

A professional cleaning service should be among the first calls homeowners make after closing on a new home. A deep cleaning when the home is empty and all lingering dust and debris is visible to the naked eye can ensure no spots are missed before move-in day. Request that the cleaning service clean the interior of kitchen drawers and cabinets, which have a tendency to accumulate grime over the years.

Electrical work

Modern homes are plugged in, so addressing electrical issues prior to move-in day can ensure there are no

interruptions to internet connectivity when everyone begins to settle into the home. This is also a great time to install additional electrical outlets, and homeowners are urged to take the time to draw up plans for how each room will look once all of their furniture is in the house. Doing so can identify where additional outlets should be installed. Homeowners also can visit their new home at night and turn on the lights to see if existing fixtures provide ample illumination. If not, installing new fixtures prior to moving in makes cleanup easier and ensures there are no dark nights once everyone is in the home.

Ceilings

Replacing ceilings prior to moving in is another savvy move. If the ceilings are dated or unsightly, removing, repainting or replacing them before anything is beneath them is a great way to protect valuables from damage. And contractors may not need as much time to complete such a project in empty rooms as they would in spaces where they need to negotiate their way around furniture and other valuables.

Various renovation projects can be conducted prior to moving into a new home. Such an approach can save both money and effort.

Open concept floor plans may be losing appeal. According to the design experts with Martha Stewart, open floor plans are giving way to a rise in separate spaces. Older homes with many rooms featured considerably less square footage than modern properties. According to Madeline Merin, a New Yorkbased designer, the average size of a home in the United States has doubled from 1,000 square feet in 1950 to 2,300 square feet now. Instead of taking down walls, which is often done to make small homes seem more spacious, owners of larger homes are looking to delineate between rooms to help homes feel more cozy. The global pandemic led some homeowners to rethink the rooms in their homes when many were forced to cohabitate around-the-clock. Many would now rather see a return to defined gathering spaces

and areas where residents can retreat for some privacy and personal time. Furthermore, Taylor Hill of Taylor Hill Interior Design says that some homeowners are increasingly appreciative of walls for their architectural appeal and not just for their utility in separating spaces.

the Flames of Fireplace Knowledge

Fireplaces have been featured in homes for centuries. Although their function may have shifted through the years from a necessity that provides light and heat to a device that is more a design focal point, fireplaces are still popular among homeowners.

Providing the cozy comfort and aesthetic appeal that many desire, fireplaces are features individuals may want to add to their homes or upgrade if existing fixtures are showing their age. Before getting

started, it’s important to realize that fireplaces are not all one and the same. Shopping for a fireplace can be a little confusing, but this guide can help homeowners navigate fireplace installation.

The Spruce says there are four main types of fireplaces: wood-burning, gas, electric, and ethanol. The type of fireplace homeowners choose will affect the initial installation cost, the long-term cost of operation and even the utility of the feature. Better Homes & Gardens says direct-vent gas fireplaces are among the easiest to install. They can be on any exterior wall and will vent directly out the back of the fireplace units. Another advantage of this type of gas fireplace is that it can start with the flip of a switch rather than a match. There

also are B-vent gas appliances and ventless units that combust the interior air.

Most people imagine a wood-burning fireplace when they conjure images of a roaring fire. Wood fireplaces offer the crackling sounds of a fire and the smell of burning wood. Wood fireplaces can be expensive and require more extensive installation, particularly because a homeowner needs a space above the fireplace to install a chimney through the roof. In a two-story home, that reality may limit where a fireplace can be installed. A wood fireplace requires a brick or stone firebox to be installed as well. Wood-burning fireplaces also can be dangerous if they are not installed correctly or properly maintained.

Electric fireplaces are easy to install and operate. The Spruce says most electric fireplaces are mounted on the wall and plugged into a standard outlet. Some also are portable and thus can be moved from room to room depending on need. A notable drawback of an electric fireplace for some is that such fixtures do not have a real flame, which some believe adversely affects their aesthetic appeal. Also, electric fireplaces will not be helpful during a power outage and do not produce the same amount of heat as other fireplaces. Ethanol fireplaces are a relatively new invention that are lightweight and can be moved as needed. Smaller versions can be placed on a tabletop, while others can be built into a wall as permanent fixtures. Again, these produce less heat than other fireplace options, but the fuel required to use them can be more expensive than gas, wood or electricity.

Fireplace installation is best left to a professional. If gas lines need to be routed, fireboxes and chimneys must be built, or proper venting has to be installed, such complex work should be left to those with experience to ensure efficiency and safety.

Home Interior Trends That Are on the Rise

Trends that seem ubiquitous one day can seemingly vanish before the sun rises again just 24 hours later. That’s especially true in the digital age, when overnight celebrities and viral videos can be on the tips of everyone’s tongue before being forgotten entirely when the next online sensation emerges in an increasingly rapid news cycle. Home trends typically benefit from a longer shelf life than viral videos and other fads that originate on the internet, and that’s something renovation-minded homeowners should consider when improving their homes. Homeowners preparing to do just that can consider these notable trends, which the online renovation experts at Houzz suggest will be particularly popular in the year ahead.

• Rounded furnishings: Houzz noted that gentle curves and rounded edges embody the organic modern styles that many current homeowners love. Rounded dining tables and similarly circular coffee tables may merit consideration among homeowners who want to embrace popular trends.

• Arches: Houzz cites arches among the more popular modern trends, and the experts at Bet -

Homeowners can consider these notable trends, which the online renovation experts at Houzz suggest will be particularly popular in the year ahead.

ter Homes & Gardens note this unique, eye-catching style has been gaining popularity for several years. Better Homes & Gardens suggests that part of the appeal of arched doorways could be their deviation from a more traditional door shape. That uniqueness draws the attention of residents and visitors alike, and Houzz notes that arched windows, cabinets and even millwork details are part of the pivot toward arches.

• Stove alcoves: If it’s a touch of

history homeowners want, kitchen range alcoves might be just the project for them. Range alcoves call an earlier time to mind when wood burning stoves were commonplace. The report from Houzz notes range alcoves immediately draw attention, which undoubtedly adds to their appeal.

• Wood for warmth: Homeowners who hear “wood and warmth” might think fireplaces, but Houzz reports that wood elements are being incorporated into interior de-

signs as a means to giving homes a more cozy vibe. Ceiling beams, trim, wall paneling, and cabinetry are utilizing wood to add warmth to a home.

Trends come and go, but home trends typically have more staying power than styles that emerge in other arenas. Homeowners who want to upgrade their home interiors can consider the latest trends and choose those that align with their own personal tastes.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A longforgotten promise is recalled. It’s not too late to follow up on it. You might find a pleasant surprise waiting. Meanwhile, see a doctor about a pesky health problem.

RELEASE AUG. 19, 2024

These horoscopes are for use the AUG. 26, 2024

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The best way to get over a personal disappointment is to get out, meet old friends, and make new ones! One of those new friends could very well become a special person in your life.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A chance to invest comes with some strings attached that could cause economic problems later on. Be careful. Cupid favors romantic possibilities with a loving Libra or a passionate Pisces.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A simple problem threatens to turn into a legal showdown unless it’s cleared up soon. Wishing it away won’t help. In addition, a telephone call could lead to a change in travel plans.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A close friend who suddenly becomes remote is in need of your warm reassurance. Give it generously. Meanwhile, a

• Studies have shown that spending only a few minutes every day in the New York City subway system can ultimately result in hearing loss.

• When you snap your finger, it moves at about 20 mph.

• A bobsled is so named because early racers bobbed their heads back and forth in an attempt to gain speed. (It didn’t work.)

• The annual World’s Biggest Liar competition in Cumbria, England, invites entrants from around the world to tell the biggest and most convincing lie they can muster in five minutes. No props or scripts are allowed, nor are politicians or lawyers permitted to compete, as “they are judged to be too skilled at telling porkies.”

• Cockroaches are so repulsed by humans that if they’re touched by a human, not only do they run away, but they wash themselves. (Personal to cockroaches: The feeling is mutual!)

22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask — no, demand help with this problem.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19)

misunderstanding on the job creates the potential for future problems. Settle it quickly.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Financial problems need your attention. It’s a good idea to cut back on unnecessary expenses until these money matters are under control. Then go out and have a great time!

Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. It’s best to be helpful and supportive if you want good results.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defense.

Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon find the situation shifting in your favor.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Career advancement involves the need for added training. The investment of your time and effort will pay off. In other news, some stormy personal situations begin to calm down.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options that you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting a personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Scale back on your grandiose schemes for a while. Neither the time nor the circumstances are right to make the huge financial investment needed to see the matter through. A Gemini has romance on the mind.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You could soon face a fascinating dilemma: Do you continue seeing a very special person who is currently in your life or renew a relationship with another person who will suddenly return from your past?

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now before they can create costly delays.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it.

LIBRA (September 23 to October

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand that they show solid proof as to why they think your ideas won’t work.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) What you may now see as a good reason to end a relationship could turn out to be based more on supposition than substance. Don’t make any rash decisions.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause some unsettling moments for the usually sure-footed Goat. But keep going! The path ahead gets easier as you move forward.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Change is the watchword for this week. Some Aquarians will be moving to new places while others will be taking new career paths. Steer clear of a family dispute.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There could also be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20)

You still might need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be prepared for a romantic disappointment to become a fading memory with the arrival of a new love -- possibly a Gemini. Meanwhile, talk to someone you trust about developing your idea into a marketable product.

These Nachos Will Be a Big Hit at Your Next Party

Chips and dip always work when entertaining, and the potential flavor combinations of this classic party offering are endless. Nacho flavors run the gamut from Latin-inspired to chili-covered to everything in between. These “Outrageous Barbecued Nachos,” courtesy of “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) by Neal Corman, pair the smoky flavor of slow-cooked barbecue with the zip of some nacho standards like jalapeño peppers and cheese. They’ll be the go-to dish while hanging out with your friends and family!

1. Preheat the oven to 400 F.

2. Combine the meats and barbecue sauce in a small saucepan over medium heat.

3. Spread half of the tortilla chips on a small cookie sheet. Cover the chips with half of the meat and sauce. Top with half of each cheese.

4. Repeat the process on top of this layer, using the other half of the ingredients.

5. Bake until the cheese is completely melted, about 10 minutes. Remove and top with the jalapeños.

A “black hole” is neither black nor a hole— it’s an object (like the super-dense core of a massive star that exploded) that contains so much matter its gravity holds in anything close enough to it— including light. Even with powerful telescopes we can only observe the radiation coming from the area around a black hole, not the object itself!
