How to choose a venue Anyone planning a special event, such as a wedding, corporate function, fundraiser, or concert will understand the importance of finding just the right venue to suit the needs of your clientele and guests. Hosting a large event can become a monumental task when dealing with large crowds, or spaces that are not necessarily well-equipped, such as a home or office. An attractive, well thought out space can make all of the difference, and reduce the stress for everyone involved! Less stress… Event planning is stressful! Every venue is different when it comes to what they offer, and full-service venues are wonderful in that you are typically dealing with experienced management and coordinators that are very familiar with party etiquette and event planning. In addition, they can often recommend quality vendors that they have worked with before. These little touches can mean the difference between an enjoyable, stressfree event, and one that requires constant supervision and less time to enjoy your special day! First and foremost, you should feel comfortable with the venue staff and should be treated with respect. Insist on a contract detailing your arrangements, and make certain that important

aspects of the event (such as bar and catering requirements, audio / visual setups, and the overall theme, style, and décor) are clearly detailed, and meet your expectations. In addition, it is important to make certain that you are on the same page with your venue coordinator to ensure that pricing and credit arrangements, delivery schedules, set-up and breakdown requirements, and venue policies are clearly stated and understood in advance. You should not be pressured into making any decisions that you do not feel are in your best interest, and if necessary, you should be prepared to end the relationship. Services… Be prepared to visit the venue well in advance of the event date to see what options are available. This way, you are able to prepare for any special considerations, such as special technical needs, placement of key vendors such as DJs or bands, and also to ensure the comfort of your guests, such as handicapped accessibility, plentiful, welllit parking, and the accommodation of special dietary needs. If it is at all possible, schedule a tasting to sample your menu as well! The best venues can help to ensure that you have a successful, stress-free event, and one that will be truly memorable for years to come!

Selecting a Septic Service Your septic system is one of the most critical components to your home. When it is working properly it is easy to forget about it. But when it breaks you won't be able to think of anything else. Choosing a septic service repair company will help you maintain your system. Choose a qualified company before there is a crisis. Thinking ahead will save you possible time and grief later. Qualifications Working on a septic system is not something that a general handyman can do. Finding a qualified professional company will ensure that the maintenance or repair is being done properly. Reputable companies only employ highly trained people who understand how to work around the dangerous chemicals in the septic system. Following proper procedures will prevent damage to your tank as well as your yard. Professionals avoid digging up your yard while doing their work. They can accomplish normal maintenance with minimal damage. Budget Budget is always a concern, especially these days. Keep in mind that your septic system is an essential part of your house. There should be no delay in maintaining it. If a price for service seems too good to be true, it probably is. Selecting the cheapest service is not usually the best decision. The work might prove to be unacceptable. They might also use unqualified workers to perform professional services. Using low-quality services could cost you twice as much. After all, you will need a professional to clean up the mess of the low-quality predecessor. Knowledge of Septic System Requirements Understand the maintenance that needs to be completed on your system. Cut down the cost of a standard pumping by locating the pump-out hatches prior to the company's arrival.

Otherwise, you are paying the workers an hourly rate to perform manual labor tasks such as digging for the hatches themselves. Before the company arrives on your property, you should have an understanding about the services they are performing. Are they simply pumping the tank and removing sewage or do you need maintenance services as well. Sometimes, septic companies will perform additional services along with routine pumping. It might cost more than standard services, but these services will help you maintain your system and give you peace of mind.

Selecting A Single Provider A one-stop shop is always better than hiring multiple companies. Avoid confusion by hiring a single company to perform multiple services. They will often give you a price break for the work. You can find good septic repair companies by searching your local newspaper classifieds or a phone book. Social media sites will also tell you about companies in your area. Websites will provide general information, company philosophy and perhaps even cost figures. Your best option, however, is to get a referral. Ask family and friends whom they have used. Strong referrals can save you thousands of dollars and endless hours of frustration. When you have a list of companies, select two or three of them. Contact the companies and ask questions. How long will it take to complete the job? What are the possible solutions to your problems? Have they done similar work in he past? How long does the repair usually last? Most importantly, get quotes in writing. They should spell out exactly how much the services will cost. Of course, request a copy of all receipts related to the repair when it is completed. Many companies might tell you that they can't guarantee a price until they begin the repair. That's fine, as long as you understand the added costs you might incur if additional issues are found with your septic system.

How to Choose a Solar Energy Company How to Choose a Transmission Repair Shop

It’s no wonder more Americans are turning to solar power with each passing year. Putting solar panels on your home or business can lower your energy bills, help the planet and add value to your property. That also means more companies are offering to install solar panels these days, making it important to pick the product and installer that will result in the best long-term benefits for your situation. Here are some things to consider when choosing a solar company.

REPUTATION In a fast-growing industry like solar energy, it’s especially important to know the reputation of the company you’re dealing with. New companies may be showing up in the marketplace, but that doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily offer the best service or be around long enough to support their product line years from now. Look for stability in your solar installer. You’ll want to find a company that has developed a great reputation over a number of years with a long track record of satisfied customers from projects similar in scope to yours. THE SYSTEM There are a wide range of solar panel systems on the market, and the technology itself is going to be a big part of your decision. Your solar system can be tied to the existing electrical grid or completely off the grid, for example, which will require different equipment and setups. No matter what system you decide on, the key

thing you’ll be looking for is efficiency, and that means understanding both the energy generated and the cost of doing so. Some solar systems generate power more efficiently than others, depending on their design and the type of materials they’re made from. And price efficiency can matter, too, because you don’t want to find yourself spending a whole lot more money for just a tiny increase in power. Likewise, if a slightly bigger investment can yield a large boost in energy generated, it can make sense to spend the extra money. Look closely at the math, and pick the system that gives you the best return for your money. Many solar systems will pay for themselves over a number of years, so choosing one to be installed by a wellregarded company can be a wise financial move. OTHER SERVICES Homeowners or commercial users will often want more than just solar panels installed. If you think that’s a possibility, you can look for a company that offers a range of services, such as radiant heat systems and solar thermal systems. And if you’re doing new construction that will have solar components, look for a solar company that can also serve as your general contractor. The bigger the project, the more important it is to have the solar systems integrated into the design and construction from start to finish, not added on as an afterthought by a contractor that doesn’t typically incorporate solar elements into their projects. If the company is familiar with construction methods that will increase the structure’s overall efficiency, too, that’s even better.

Look for a shop that encourages proper maintenance Proper maintenance is key to ensuring the longevity of your transmission. After every 30,000 miles, you should have it serviced or cleaned to prevent problems. Good shops provide a power flush to remove and replace all transmission fluid. Some car manufacturers recommend servicing the transmission after every 50,000 miles. Many car owners have discovered that it is simply not often enough. It costs so much to replace a transmission that it is often financially smarter to just buy another car instead. That is exactly what automakers are hoping you will do. Err on the side of caution and replace your transmission fluid regularly. Search for properly trained specialists You will save yourself much time and money if you search for a repair shop with a good track record. Some shops require multiple visits before the work is done correctly. Mechanics at the best repair shops are properly trained to fix a wide variety of transmissions. Do not use a general auto repair shop or dealer service for transmission repairs. It will cost you more money because they will have to subcontract with a transmission specialist to do the

job. Save money by going to the transmission shop yourself.

Choose a credible repair shop The Better Business Bureau can also give you information about poor performing shops in your area. That organization keeps a record of complaints lodged against them. If you are considering a national chain, the Bureau of Consumer Investigations will also inform you about which stores are not reputable.

Determine the type of repair work to be done Transmission work is time consuming and difficult. Professionals must remove the transmission from the vehicle. That can cost about $500 even before any other work is started. Minor transmission repairs could require the entire transmission to be rebuilt. There are only two options for repairing a transmission: remanufacturing or rebuilding. Remanufacturing remakes the transmission from used cores and replaces all moving parts. It is the equivalent to purchasing a whole new transmission. Rebuilding a transmission replaces worn-down parts. It is the most common transmission repair.

Prepare for hefty repair costs Because basic labor itself is expensive, it often makes more sense to completely rebuild your transmission rather than fixing minor issues periodically. This price will depend on the complexity and the extent of the rebuild. Remanufactured transmissions are expensive. The standard rebuilt transmission usually offers a oneyear/12,000-mile warranty. For a remanufactured transmission, the standard warranty is three-year/100,000 miles.

The transmission is an important part of your car. Without a good transmission, the car will not run properly. Fluid in the transmission lubricates shifts. This fluid needs to be replaced periodically to keep the transmission working. It is a common problem, one that is easily preventable. Sometimes breakdowns occur even if you are using clean transmission fluid. Finding a quality transmission repair shop will help you keep your car in good working order.

In a poorly ventilated attic, heat can build up, causing snow on your roof to melt and flow to the colder eaves where it refreezes. As ice accumulates, a dam is formed that prevents water from draining property until it begins to seep under shingles, spawning roof leaks and structural decay.

As modern society has become increasingly dependent on personal computers, it has become essential to be able to get a computer fixed quickly and successfully in case something goes wrong. Whether it’s a computer that’s used for work or one that’s for fun and entertainment, a breakdown can ruin your day. It’s a good idea to find a qualified computer repairman you can trust before you need one. Here are some factors to consider when looking for a computer repair specialist. Type of Computer Is your computer a desktop or laptop system? Desktop systems are generally made up of a tower, a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. Laptops are self-contained in a package that folds up and travels easily. Desktops and laptops often have different issues, so it's best to consult a technician who specializes in your type of computer. Ask friends and relatives to recommend a repair specialist, or check with the computer technicians at your workplace. You may find the specialist you’re looking for at a local business machines vendor or at the help desk of an electronics retailer. Experience Look for a specialist who has successfully fixed many computers similar to yours. You don't want them getting onthe-job training on your machine. Find out how long they’ve worked on computers and how they keep up with new developments. An experienced technician who attends seminars or classes to learn about the latest computer news is likely to be well-equipped to address your computer issue. Training and Certification Ask your prospective technician whether he or she has

earned any software certifications from Microsoft, or if they have a degree in a computer-related field. These can be good indicators of self-discipline and career focus in your technician, but they don't guarantee the technician's ability. In the world of computers, experience and skill can carry more weight than a diploma. Price As with most services, don't automatically go with the vendor who offers the lowest quote. If something goes wrong during the repair, you may have to eat the additional costs incurred to fix the new problem. On the other hand, don't assume that the vendor with the highest price offers the best quality or service. Small shops and individuals frequently offer the best deals because they don't emphasize selling you a bundle of services or software that you don't need. Make a Personal Visit Take a careful look around the computer repair shop where your potential technician works. When you first enter a computer repair shop, beware of sales representatives in the front who may try to sell you a new product rather than get something fixed. Make sure you meet the technician who will work on your computer. As you describe your computer's problem, watch his or her response carefully -- both words and body language. If they seem to know the problem, then odds are that's the case. If they don’t instill confidence, you should probably take your computer elsewhere. The most important thing is for you to feel comfortable with and confident in your computer repair specialist. Finding the right combination of experience, customer service and price can be a challenge, but it's worth the extra effort in the long run.

How to Choose an Auto Body Shop Anyone who has experienced a car accident knows that it can be a calamitous event. Once you have dealt with any resulting health issues, you will have to contend with damage to your automobile. Whether your car has experienced significant damage or simply a scratch, it is vital to find an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable. Even the smallest accident can throw your schedule into disarray. A good auto body shop will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are a necessary part of life for most people. Once you have a list of names, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. If your social network doesn't have good recommendations, consult the Yellow Pages, advertising supplements or the Internet. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone. Describe the problem and listen for the response.

If the person seems knowledgable and friendly, keep that shop on the list. However, if the person seems rushed and uninterested, it can mean the shop is very busy. It might also have poor customer service. Eliminate them from your list. When you have chosen an auto body shop, visit their store. Check for prices, certifications guarantees. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car. They should have previous satisfied customers with whom you can contact. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don't match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Quality auto body shops should be able to complete an entire job onsite. Our cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans get us to work on time, back and forth to school and transport our families to and from their destinations. Choosing a great auto body shop is important for yourself and your family. The right auto body shop will have superior customer service, great prices and excellent quality of work.

Extra weight will shorten your lifespan and create a myriad of physical problems. Losing weight is a challenging process, requiring selfdiscipline and dedication. When you need help dieting, a weight loss clinic may be the answer. Trained professionals can educate you on good nutrition, keep you motivated and set a realistic weight loss goal. They will answer your questions and provide accountability. Each clinic has its own approach. Selecting the right program will help you reach your weight loss goals. So many diets create glamorous advertisements using famous people, but that doesn't mean their plan is the best one for you. Here are some ideas to help you find the best weight loss clinic to meet your needs.

RESEARCH AND VISIT First off, research local weight loss clinics. Visit their website because it will give you a good idea about price points and programs. Do you have to purchase special meals? Are meetings and appointments required? Make sure these commitments are convenient for you. Think of other information you may need. Many clinics provide online courses, while others hold public weigh-ins. Decide what is comfortable for you. Once you narrow down your choices, visit each facility. Observe the way staff members talk to clients. All employees should be courteous and competent to everyone, not just potential or new customers. If you have questions, bring a notebook and pencil to take notes. PLANS AND REFERRALS Although each clinic will seem as though it has the only plan that works, you must determine if it is the best program

for you. Read what others write about the various diet programs. It will help you to know what others have experienced. Always remember, however, that what works for one person might not work for another. Keep your personal requirements in mind. If possible, ask to speak with existing clients about their experiences. Clinics with good reputations will be happy to provide you with such a list, although some medical weight loss programs will likely have privacy restrictions on sharing patient information. Clinics offer different levels of intervention and support including medical evaluation and management by obesity treatment experts. Other levels of support include nutritional counseling or education, as well as behavioral motivation and strategies. They might also have stress management techniques that can stop you from eating your troubles away. Do not register with anyone until you check them out with the Better Business Bureau and online reviewers. Understand each clinic’s cancellation policy. If possible, ask for a trial memberships. Many weight loss clinics allow trial periods. It offers you an opportunity to try their system without making a financial commitment. Use your time at the clinic wisely. Create good nutrition and exercise habits. You are not only there to lose weight, you are developing a healthy, lifelong lifestyle. In the end, a good weight loss clinic can go a long way toward helping you succeed. It is easy to stick with a plan when you have the assistance and support of caring staff. Whether you need to lose a small or large amount of weight, it is important to find a safe, effective way to achieve your goals.

If you’re suffering from a hearing loss or impairment, a hearing aid may be just the thing for you. Hearing loss affects more than 40 million Americans. People of all ages and backgrounds experience hearing impairment or loss. Many people seek out hearing aids to help relieve the serious consequences of this condition. As a result, they lead richer, fuller lives. These devices are highly technical, customized to meet each individual's needs. Types of hearing loss vary widely, and are sometimes quite different from person to person. Innovations in hearing aids include using digital processors to isolate and amplify the frequencies a patient needs most. Many of the latest hearing aids are so small they are practically invisible.

The difference is in the internal electronics. Nearly all hearing aids available today are digital. They will filter out background noise, enabling the wearer to hear a conversation clearly. This technology is particularly effective in crowded settings. This technology can be tailored to help with your particular kind of hearing loss. If you have an outdated hearing aid, consider upgrading to a more modern device. It will help your hearing be as close to natural as possible.

OPTIONS When you are searching for a hearing aid, look for special features that will enhance your hearing and your life. Some examples include: BLUETOOTH CONNECTIONS: You could connect wirelessly to Bluetooth electronic devices, such as smart phones. It allows you to hear phone conversations directly through your hearing aid. TELEPHONE ADAPTERS: This feature senses when you are talking on the phone and adjusts the setting to make it more clear during your conversation. DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE: You can adjust your device to pick up sound that is directly in front of you. For example, when you are having one-on-one conversations with a person, it is useful to turn the microphone to improve your hearing. You may also change the setting to a more general setting that would be useful at public performances or concerts. REMOTE CONTROL: Some devices allow you to adjust the settings without touching it. A remote control can change the directional microphone or amplification. There are a lot of beautiful sounds in the world. Don’t let your hearing loss cause you to miss any more of them. A hearing aid can help you.

STYLES The good news is that you no longer need to purchase bulky, obvious hearing aids of yesteryear. The most popular hearing aids on the market fit completely within the ear canal. While they are attractive and barely noticeable, their small size means they are typically more expensive. Other styles include half-shell, full-shell, behind-the-ear and open-fit hearing aids. Because these hearing aids come in a range of sizes and prices, consult with a specialist to help you choose the right style to fit your needs. INTERNAL ELECTRONICS The design of a hearing aid will make a large difference in cost and performance. Two devices may look similar but produce dramatically different results.

Selecting the Best Eye Doctor for You

Whether you are planning a celebration or a quiet night among friends, finding a good liquor store can make a big difference. There is no better way to kick back and relax than to surround yourself with good friends and fine beverages. The best shops will provide advice, knowledge and opportunities to buy quality products.

Eye exams are one of the most important things you can do to ensure good health and happiness. Even if you don’t have any noticeable trouble with your eyesight, it is still important to have a routine examination. Having your eyes checked regularly makes early detection more likely and will lead to better visual and ocular health. Choosing a right eye doctor can be a challenge so consider these aspects when doing your research:

WIDE VARIETY Look for a store that matches your personal preferences. Some shops carry local beer selections from nearby microbreweries. Others stock wines and high-end imported rum or scotch. The best stores will have a mixture of popular products, along with some new, rare or exotic offerings. The liquor shop should have a variety of price points. From the most expensive to the lower-price selections, all could have an important place in a well-stocked liquor cabinet. Mixed drinks or baked recipes, for example, don't always have to include the very best brands because the flavor will be diluted with other ingredients. If you are planning to drink the liquor by itself, however, it is much better to look for a quality brand -- even if it is more expensive. EXPERT ADVICE If you entertain frequently, your liquor purchases may be significant. The bigger investment you

make, the more important it is to get expert advice. The best liquor stores will guide you into finding the right product for a specific use or occasion. You should be able to describe the event, along with the flavors or tastes you prefer. Listen to their advice. Good, personalized service may be worth traveling a longer distance. In addition, if you use the same store frequently, they will get to know your preferences and needs. Your experiences will keep improving with each visit. OVERALL EXPERIENCE Convenience is always a factor, but it isn't the only thing to consider. Ideally, the shop should be clean, organized and in a safe neighborhood. The best liquor stores take pride in having a tidy appearance, vast selection and sophisticated staff. When you find those things in a liquor store, you can enjoy the taste of sweet success. Finally, consider the overall shopping experience. You'll want to find a store that's convenient — typically either close to your home or near your route home from work — but that's just the start. A properly managed store will take pride in its appearance, selection and employees. Look for a business that stands out from the crowd. If you can find all those things in one store, your enjoyment and relaxation will be even sweeter.

INSURANCE If you have health or vision insurance, check the list of doctors who are covered by your plan. Insurance companies make agreements with eye care specialists to deliver services at a prearranged price. Picking an “innetwork” doctor will save you money on your co-pay and out-of-pocket costs. TYPES OF DOCTORS Optometrist have specialized training in diagnosing and treating vision and eye health-related problems. Their extensive background typically includes four years of pre-med school, four years of optometry school and in many cases a residency after receiving their optometric license. Optometrists identify, diagnose and treat a variety of eye disorders, including cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disease, ocular infections and trauma. They write prescriptions for glasses, contact lenses, and medications as needed to treat ocular conditions. In most states, they do not perform laser procedures or ocular surgery. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who treat eye diseases. They have a full medical degree along with their specialized training for eye conditions. Their extensive background typically includes four years of pre-med school, four years of medical school, at least

one year of an internship, and three years of residency before receiving their ophthalmology license. Along with treating vision problems, they provide medical and surgical care, and may even perform plastic surgery. TRAINING Eye doctors often specialize in treating certain diseases. If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, for instance, you may find a doctor who has experience specifically treating that disease. Be comfortable asking your eye doctor about their experience treating specific diseases and conditions. REFERENCES Your family doctor or general practitioner may refer patients to a specific eye care specialist that has that has experience treating certain problems or patient populations. Friends and family may also provide helpful advice. They will often be willing to share their experience and let you know if they were comfortable with the office or not. SELECTION Some people are particular about their frames, lenses or contact lenses. If you already know what you need -- such as glasses from a particularly designer -- look for an eye doctor who has access to that brand. You can also see their stock of eyeglass frames to make sure they carry the style you desire. When purchasing glasses, it is essential to have a wide range of products to view. Lenses and frames can vary in terms of comfort, appearance, price and quality. The better the selection, the more likely you will find that perfect pair of glasses for you!

SELECTING THE RIGHT BANK

HOW TO CHOOSE ALZHEIMER’S CARE

Your money is important, and how your finances are handled will either make your life much easier, or cause untold amounts of frustration and aggravation. Choose the right bank and give your finances a much needed boost. Not all banks are the same, and not all of them offer the same kind of returns and programs for your financial need. Choosing a bank just because of its location could mean you are missing out on some important benefits. While convenience is important, it shouldn't be your only factor. Consider these aspects when selecting a bank.

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia can be devastating, but supporting a loved one who has been diagnosed with compassion and informed decision-making is the greatest service a family or life partner can provide. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease for which there is no cure. At some point in a person’s Alzheimer’s journey, they will require specialized care for a variety of reasons, but often times the primary concern is because they are no longer safe at home. This happens no matter what precautions one has taken to provide an Alzheimer’s friendly home. The Caregivers Disease- don’t wait until there’s a crisis Alzheimer’s is often called the “caregivers disease” because of the tremendous burden experienced by the primary giver who often experiences chronic sleep deprivation and other stress related health concerns. Many people put off doing their research until there is some type of crisis either with the caregiver or the person with Alzheimer’s requiring greater care than what can be provided at home. In choosing Alzheimer’s care, it is imperative that one begins the research process before help is needed. By researching ahead of need, you can make a better decision when the time comes.

INTEREST RATES AND FEES CHARGED Like many other businesses, banks want to be competitive. Interest rates are one way they entice new customers. It is not uncommon for the savings account interest rates to vary widely, but the majority of institutions make adjustments according to changes in the federal funds rate. You might think interest rates are inconsequential. But when substantial deposit amounts are involved the difference can be significant. Banks are also famous for charging fees for particular transactions. For example, a checking account may only allow a certain number of checks to be written each month before a fee is assessed. Sometimes, a minimum balance is required to keep the account active. There are also banks that offer free checking and other options. Make sure, however, that the free checking is really free. There may be stipulations such as being required to keep a minimum balance in the account at all times. Look at a fee schedule to determine if it is acceptable to you. PERSONAL CONVENIENCE Banks with multiple locations in convenient areas are important. If you travel frequently, check if your local or regional institution is a member of a national network. Also, ask about their online banking policies. Is their website easy

to navigate and secure? Online banking can be a great way to pay bills and transfer money between accounts. OVERDRAFT SAFEGUARDS Everyone makes mistakes. Accidental overdrafts happen occasionally. Each financial institution has a different policy about these matters. Some banks might offer overdraft coverage in the form of a highinterest credit line. Other banks charge fees each time an overdraft occurs. Sometimes, banks provide no coverage. Be sure to research overdraft policies before making a final decision. INSTITUTIONAL STABILITY These days, it is important to consider a bank's stability. Before you entrust your money to an institution, check its history and financial condition. Typically, banks invest deposited funds under a fractional reserve banking system. Any bank with a strong balance sheet should be able to weather any turbulence caused by market corrections. The majority of banks are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for up to $250,000 per depositor. This value can vary depending on the type and number of accounts held by a customer. Provided you understand and act within these safeguards, your money will likely be safe in a bank. That is not to say that failures are impossible. A solid bank will limit exposure to toxic assets that put its balance sheet at risk. SERVICES YOU NEED Most banks offer a variety of services. Whether you need to get a loan or open a checking account, choose a bank that fulfills your needs with the fewest fees. It should offer the maximum conveniences possible. Careful and vigilant shoppers will have positive experiences by making an effort to choose a trustworthy commercial bank.

WHAT CAN I DO NOW? What tools do you need to make an informed decision and how should you go about it? First, understand that the very best facilities are solely dedicated to providing “Memory Care”. In RI, Memory Care Assisted Living Residences have a special license issued by the Department of Health for “Special Care”. There are many requirements to achieve this level of licensure but to name a few: the Residence has been designed to provide a secure environment appropriate for the resident population, as well as staffing, training and therapeutic activities appropriate for it’s residents. CONTINUUM OF CARE Different people require different levels of care. Most people with Alzheimer’s or Dementia will be appropriate for Memory Care Assisted Living, but there are those who are considered medically complex who may require a higher level of care. Try and find a Memory Care Assisted Living Residence that offers a continuum of care to Skilled

Nursing if needed.

RESEARCH Word of mouth can be a source of good information. The Internet has lots of information- take your search past the first page and dig deep. Review websites, consumer feedback and other available information. Stay away from websites that promise to refer you to properties. Many of them charge a fee to the facility in exchange for the referral and you are likely to find just as much information on your own. Once you see a few that you like and have examined their websites, look for a Facebook page and examine the content to get a feel for the place. Make a list of your top five places that you want to look at. Be willing to travel a further distance in certain instances for the best care. Call each place and arrange a visit. Some advisors will recommend that you show up unannounced however; you are taking a chance of not being able to obtain the information you need and may have to make a second trip.

VISIT While visiting the Residence, look around- not just at the existing Residents and the physical environment, but also at the staff. Ask what features of the residence have been designed specific to a person with Alzheimer’s. Ask about the Activity Program. Request a dining menu. Talk with your tour guide about challenges they have faced in the past and how they work with families to resolve them. Do you feel comfortable with the residence and the people you’ve met? Are they the kind of people you know you’ll be able to speak with if there’s ever a problem?

RELAX Once you’ve made a decision about the right place for your family member or beloved partner, speak with the admission team and create a transition plan. You’ll imagine the worst, and you will most likely be pleasantly surprised how well your loved one responds when they move to a specialized Alzheimer’s residence. The beauty is that they will be in a secure environment and well cared for. Your stress level will subside because once you find the right place, you can take a deep breath, leave the role of caregiver behind and again resume the role of husband, wife, partner, brother, sister, daughter, son, friend.

Confident people launch successful careers and start promising new relationships. And how we look plays a big role in how confident we feel. You can create confidence by establishing healthier habits and using anti-aging technology. Start by making a few simple changes to your lifestyle. 1. Get at least eight hours of sleep. Tiredness can add bags under your eyes and make you feel depleted. 2. Develop a positive attitude. Negativity can make you look and feel old. 3. Eat healthy foods. Stay away from artificial ingredients and harmful chemicals that are often added to foods. 4. Drink eight glasses of water. Rehydrating flushes toxins out of your body and rejuvenates youthful looking skin. 5. Exercise regularly. How to Choose a Skilled Nursing Facility for Your Loved One You can never be too choosy when it comes to your loved one. Finding a skilled nursing facility for a loved one can be a challenge for everyone involved. With hundreds of choices available, it can be difficult to sort through all of your options. Your best choices are facilities that have high scores from state agencies such as the nursinghome regulatory agency or department of health. The nursing staff in these facilities is required to complete a formal certification process. As a result, the staff at a nursing facility is usually much more skilled and regulated than staff at an assisted living facility. That's because the staff at skilled nursing facilities provide and administer prescription medications. Assisted living facility staff does not usually have the same authorization. Skilled nursing facilities provide more personalized care to residents who are suffering from advanced age, severe illness or infirmity. Assisted living residents live in a somewhat private environment and perform most of their daily living activities with minimal staff assistance. Your loved one will need reassurance that he or she will be safe and well taken care of by a highly skilled nursing staff. Select a facility close to your loved one's family and friends. It should be easy to see your loved one. Frequent visits will help ease the transition from independent living to a skilled nursing environment.

You can form an accurate opinion by visiting several facilities. Reputable centers will have no problems with scheduling interviews with staff or giving tours of the living areas and grounds. If a facility doesn't allow you to see these areas or have a meeting with the director, it should be dropped from your list. Cleanliness, cheerful decor and happy residents neatly dressed are symbols of a quality facility. Speak to current residents and their families to get a good assessment of the facility. Family members will likely provide the most unbiased and unvarnished opinion of the facility. Most high-quality skilled nursing facilities are significant investments. They provide a much higher level of care and so they cost more. Talk with an attorney who specializes in nursing facility cases for advice on cost, as well as quality of care. The decision to put your loved one in a particular facility is not permanent. If your family member is not receiving good care or shows signs of abuse, you have the right to remove him or her. Frequent visits are important so you can monitor the health and wellbeing of your loved one. See him or her at different times of the day to verify the level of care. Take all the time you need when searching for a skilled nursing facility. Putting a loved one in a facility can be difficult and emotionally challenging. Finding the best one you can afford will give you peace of mind.

If you find that you need to rent or purchase medical equipment, you may want to research providers carefully before making any decisions. People with long-term or chronic illness find that medical equipment can improve their comfort and quality of life. Your doctor can prescribe the type of device or equipment you need. Follow the correct guidelines, and then choose a company in your area who has the equipment and supplies that best meet your needs. RESPIRATION EXPERTISE People with respiratory problems should look for a medical equipment provider whose staff has training and expertise with CPAP machines and supplies, bottled oxygen and other equipment. A certified respiratory therapist on staff can guide you on how to use the equipment safely and effectively. Choose a company that delivers the correct supplies at the right time and that employs skilled and compassionate people. PERSONAL SERVICE Locally-based providers are always best. You are likely to receive personalized service. They can also respond quickly in case of trouble. Equipment fails and supplies run out. When your provider is in your community, you can usually reach someone right away. A local provider can send someone quickly. Larger companies may stock supplies a few hundred miles away. That means you may have to wait days for a technician or urgently needed supplies to arrive. GOVERNMENT BILLING Medicare and Medicaid often cover medical equipment

and supplies. Choose a provider who is experienced in handling patient billing for these plans. Government regulations and documentation are often complicated. There are deadlines to meet and rules to follow. The equipment provider may be able to bill Medicare or Medicaid directly, which lessens the deductible you will have to pay. It also speeds up the entire billing process. MOBILITY EXPERTISE When you are dealing with mobility issues, look for a provider with experience in mobility aids. They should offer you a wide range of walkers, scooters and wheelchairs. While you may only need a simple cane now, you might need more advanced aids in the future. Creating a good working relationship with a medical equipment provider will help you as your needs change over time. OTHER SUPPLIES Medical needs change over time. Be sure to choose a company that carries a wide array of medical supplies. In the future, you might need ostomy supplies; diabetic shoes, hosiery and supplies; home oxygen; CPAP machines and supplies and other types of treatment and monitoring equipment. Choose a medical equipment provider who becomes familiar with your needs over the years and who can develop a sense of you as a person. Speak with your doctor and staff about good companies in your area. Their recommendations will help you find the right company for your needs. A good track record of customer service, the ability to handle Medicare and Medicaid billing, and trained staff should be the factors to guide you in your search for an excellent medical equipment provider.

How to Choose an Accountant Finding the right accountant is one of the best things you can do to protect your money. A good accountant knows how to plan ahead and advise you how to create the correct business structure which will save you the most taxes. That's why it is vital that you take the time and find the right person to fit your accounting needs. An accountant is a licensed professional who examines, organizes and keeps track of accounting tax matters for people and businesses. A good accountant will be able to inform clients on tax issues as they relate to finance and their type of business. A qualified accountant will provide both the financial and legal implications of your decisions. Some people prefer to handle their own bookkeeping and tax preparation. There are a variety of software packages on the market that can help, especially during tax season. Using software to file your taxes can be particularly helpful if you have multiple deductions. Personal and business tax software can guide you through filing a return. Once the process is complete, you can file a return electronically and print a hard copy for your records. People with simple filing requirements use tax software. But when your situation is more complicated, consider hiring a professional accountant. Don't risk filing incomplete or incorrect documents to the IRS. It will often cost you in the long run. When searching for the right accountant, look for someone who has a proven track record and satisfied

client base. Experience counts! Check the internet. There are many review websites that can help guide you toward reputable accountants. But be aware that people who are dissatisfied are much more likely to post their experiences than those who are happy with the service. Family and friends can also be a valuable resource. Successful accountants often rely on word-of-mouth to build their businesses. You can measure the trustworthiness and performance of any professional by going through your own network. Ask around. If someone is happy with their accountant, they will be happy to tell you about them. The yellow pages and professional accounting organizations, such as American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, can also be a good source of information. If you choose to use them as a source, contact several accountants and ask for references. Consider requesting a consultation so you can get detailed information about services. Once you narrow your list down, look at the Better Business Bureau's website. Many accountants are listed, and you can gauge the satisfaction of their former clients. Most importantly, check your comfort level with each prospective accountant. You will be sharing sensitive financial and personal details with this person. It is vital that the accountant communicates well, returns phone calls promptly and answers questions patiently.

We are dedicated to serving you.

How to Choose an Auto Repair Shop How to Choose Auto Glass Repair Regular maintenance on a vehicle is necessary to keep it running great and avoid large repair bills. Having a good relationship with a high-quality auto repair shop will save you time and hassle when your vehicle needs an immediate repair. It doesn’t matter whether the car is new or used. At some point, it will need tires, oil changes or even a new engine. If you have a good auto repair shop you trust, it will make these nuances that much easier to accomplish. If you don’t have a regular mechanic, take your car in for a regular tune-up and maintenance. Since your car needs preventive maintenance anyway, take it to get an oil change or to service the air conditioning. This is a great way to try out a shop to see if they meet your needs. Here are some other things to keep in mind when looking for an auto repair shop: • Most people choose an auto repair shop based on a referral from friends, family or coworkers. Less than 40 percent of new customers are walk-ins. • The Better Business Bureau can inform you about the repair shop’s performance and reliability. • People who travel often usually work with shops that offer a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for issues that keep cropping up, particularly in older cars. • Ask about the shop’s range of services. They will need the latest technology to diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can your

prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components and warranty repairs? Do they provide a loaner, rental car, or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? • Inquire about their customer satisfaction policy. Look around the shop. Is the equipment in good condition? Is it clean, well-lit and organized? These factors all contribute to a level of professionalism. • Look for brand names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brand-name parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. Shop shops may use remade or generic brands which your insurance policy may not cover, so be sure to check. • Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services or Automotive Science Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90 percent or higher and the ability to adequately perform the services advertised. • Compare the services and fees of each shop in the area to find out the average price ranges. Don’t pick a shop based on cost; poor repair work will mean higher costs in the long run. Once you have found a shop you trust, establish a good working relationship with your mechanic. When you have great communication, getting repair work completed will be less painful.

Spider webs distorting your view through the windshield of your vehicle? Gravel splintering your windshield isn't just a minor annoyance. It can make a big dent in your finances. The longer you leave the problem without fixing it, the worse it will get. Until one day you may just have to replace the entire windshield, which is much more expensive than a glass repair. An auto glass repair shop can help you fix your cracked windshield or other glass repairs. If the damage is minor, a skilled craftsman might even use glass filler to make your windshield look as good as new. Whether you need a full windshield replacement or simply a little filler, selecting a skilled auto glass repair shop will help you get back on the road quickly and seeing clearly.

cracks, they have their own proprietary methods. The filler must be applied with special care and skill, similar to a painting or sculpture. The talent of the craftsman will have an impact on how the repair will look. Request to see examples of a company's prior work. Understand their limitations. If a crack or chip is a certain size, depth or diameter, the repair will not work. They will likely recommend replacing the full windshield. The longevity of their repair is also a factor. The company's work must withstand time and usage. The harshness of road conditions may cause the crack to reappear even after it's been repaired. Reach out to friends and family who have cars. Ask who they use when they get windshield cracks. If they are satisfied with the repair, contact the auto glass repair shop for more details about their services.

A SIMPLER PROCESS A full, windshield replacement could easily cost you a few hundred dollars. More if the windshield is custom or in an uncommon size. If you have a full-coverage insurance policy, there is a good chance your insurance company may cover the cost. Check with the policy about the cost of your deductible. It will help you decide whether it makes sense to repair rather than replace the glass. Of course, it is a simpler, easier process to repair a small chip or crack. It is typically an inexpensive procedure.

DON'T LIVE WITH IT Some drivers try to live with a cracked windshield, ignoring the damage and hoping it won't get worse. That's a big mistake. A cracked windshield can distract you or obscure your vision. It can easily cause you to have an accident. Even a minor crack should be treated early to keep it from growing. The vibration of the car will cause cracks to lengthen and grow if they're not repaired. It can happen quickly or slowly. Hairline cracks are especially prone to splitting. When you repair cracks early, you prevent further damage. In turn, it saves you money. The choice is crystal clear. Get your windshield fixed by a high-quality auto glass company. It is smart, affordable and safe.

QUALITY WORK When searching for the right auto glass repair shop, your top priority should be quality. Every company is different. When it comes to fixing

How to Choose Cremation Services

The right attorney can make a big difference between winning and losing your case. Don’t settle for a second rate lawyer. The outcome of your legal issue is just too important. Some people try to defend their self and end up paying more in fines or even jail time than they would have had they had the right kind of legal representation. Attorneys know the law, and the loop holes that may be able to help your case. They know how to work with other attorneys, the best defensive approach for your particular case, and how to properly fill out the correct files, forms and paperwork. No matter what legal issue you are facing, you can find an attorney who matches your needs and advocates strongly for side of the case. Here are some factors to keep in mind when choosing a lawyer.

Cremation is an emotional subject. Making decisions in advance about cremation services can help loved ones during a painful time. Otherwise, they will need to make tough choices while stressed and grieving. Discussing death with family and friends is never easy. Many people opt not to plan for their own deaths, or they delay asking loved ones about their wishes. Procrastination will not change reality. It is always best to take care of details in advance. Cremation services are becoming more popular these days. They can be a cost-effective alternative to traditional burials. With cremation, the family doesn’t have to purchase an expensive casket or cemetery lot. Loved ones may spend more money than they can afford in an effort to respect the memory of the deceased. But a cremation service is an affordable way to respectfully memorialize a friend or family member. The service can be a peaceful time to grieve and remember. A funeral home may own or have a partnership or connection with a cremation center. They may have

Affordability Do not settle for inexpensive legal representation. Quality should always come first when it comes to attorneys. If you are facing a criminal case and cannot afford an attorney, ask for a court-appointed lawyer. Taxpayers pay these representatives to help people in need. A court-appointed lawyer can provide you with valuable assistance. Also, never hire an attorney who has been disbarred in any state. Relevant Issues The legal issue you are facing will determine the attorney you need. For example, people who have been arrested for driving while intoxicated will require a criminal lawyer who specializes in traffic law. Real estate transactions are best handled by a real estate lawyer. Many lawyers specialize in a variety of legal issues. It is vital that you hire a lawyer that practices in the type of law you need. References Sometimes, finding a great attorney can be as simple as asking your family or friends for referrals. If you are getting a divorce, look for people in your social network who have been through a divorce

and were pleased with their attorney. You can also ask attorneys for references. A quality professional should be able to provide you with recommendations from previous clients. Case History Case histories might help you gauge an attorney’s competency. Websites will help you determine a lawyer’s success rate. You can also find out if an attorney you are considering has a high settlement rate. Ask attorneys directly about their case histories. Any lawyer with a good track record will readily provide the information. Online Ratings Other websites rate attorneys. They are also a great resource for client reviews. Don’t give positive or negative reviews much credence, however. Not all are always honest nor is every one a lie. Focus on comments about a lawyer’s availability, personality and results. You should not have to struggle to get into contact with your attorney. Always keep in mind that gruff lawyers are sometimes the best ones. While no attorney should treat you rudely, you are paying for their services. Tough, even-handed attorneys can be an asset. A personable attorney is great, but if that person has a terrible success rate, choose another. Consultation Take advantage of any free consultations. Most attorneys offer them. The meeting will allow you to discover if the lawyers is a good match for you. If you feel discomfort during the meeting, do not hire the attorney. Simply thank them for their time. Ask questions during your free consultation. Expect forthright answers. If you don’t feel satisfied, find another person to represent you. There are plenty of qualified local attorneys who will be willing to help.

additional services, such as grief counseling or assistance with necessary paperwork. After the cremation, you will receive an urn. You can choose to bury the urn, keep it in your home or place it in a memorial building. When searching for a cremation center, check with your family or friends for referrals. The Internet Cremation Society and the Cremation Society of North America are sources of information that can assist with choosing a cremation provider in your area. Once you have narrowed your choices, consider how you feel about the staff of the cremation center. You should feel comfortable asking questions. The employees should be knowledgeable, competent and pleasant. They should give you all of the details about price breakdowns, and their process of making ashes for the urn. They can help you understand what will happen to the body of the deceased. By doing a little research and choosing wisely, you can make the process a little easier for loved ones during a difficult time.

How to Choose a Pet Groomer

How to have a Well-trained pet

When you are expecting company there is nothing worse than having a house that smells like a dirty animal. Pet groomers are essential for anyone who owns a dog or cat. Groomers can provide a bath or clip nails at critical times. It is a little known fact that pet groomers can also help you maintain the health of your dog or cat. They are usually the first people to spot a skin disease. Groomers also clip hair around eyes and check your pet's ears for mites. Would you choose a doctor without doing thorough research? Of course not. You should also never select a groomer sightunseen. Follow these tips to find the best pet groomer for your furry baby.

Training is one of the fundamentals of happy pet ownership. Developing strong and healthy relationships with pets requires that pet owners provide for their pets in a variety of ways. Although affection and exercise are essential elements to raising a well-rounded pet, owners should not overlook one of the most important parts of pet care: discipline. Well-trained pets can be a joy to be around. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says learning how to train a dog can improve the life of the pet and the life of the owner, enhancing the bond between owner and dog while ensuring the pet's safety. Many dogs are eager to learn and will embrace their training. Dogs have special needs and instincts, communicating in ways separate from humans. When a puppy is brought into a home, both puppy and person must adapt to each other. Humans must learn to communicate effectively in a language that a dog will comprehend, while dogs must learn to fit into the human world and refocus some behaviors that may not be appropriate in a home setting. Training requires consistency. Anyone involved in the training and interaction with the pet should be following the same set of guidelines. If a behavior is worthy of praise, it should be offered each and every time. If the dog jumps up on a greeting and that is discouraged, every person she jumps up on should address the behavior the same way. Dogs who are trained as puppies will learn good behavior right away and be less likely to adopt bad habits. But dogs can be trained at any age. Older dogs may just require a little more effort. Practicing new behaviors tend to be most effective

Referrals Family and friends should be your first stop. They might know of a good pet groomer in your area. Referrals are a large part of any business. Most groomers make an extra effort to make sure their customers are satisfied. If you are coming to a groomer via a recommendation, tell the person. The groomer will be happy to know that their business has a great reputation. It is likely they will go the extra mile to make sure you are pleased with their services. Groomers are most often found in large pet stores, veterinary offices and stand-alone storefronts. You can find them through your local newspaper, Yellow Pages or online. Make a list of groomers that are conveniently located near your home or business. You will drop your pet off and picking them up later in the day. Visit and Ask Questions Visit groomers on your list and inspect their shops. Check for cleanliness and professionalism. The service area should smell fresh and clean. The pet waiting room should also be free from debris and chemicals. Observe how the groomer and staff interact with animals and customers. Nothing can be more difficult than a slick, wiggly pet. But a groomer should be gentle. He should never yell or jerk a pet around.

Inquire about their services. Do they groom both cats and dogs? Is there a separate waiting area for the two types of pets? Can you choose the shampoo? Are nail clippings and anal gland expressions part of the package, or do these services cost extra? Checking about these things ahead of time will spare you the shock and disappointment when you bring your pet home. Some groomers do not perform these services. It’s important to know what you can expect. Also, be sure to ask about medical services. What happens if your pet has an emergency while they are at the groomer? Does the groomer have a relationship with the local veterinarian? Another option is a mobile pet groomer. These professionals have a vehicle with everything they need to groom your pet in front of your house. If traveling is inconvenient, mobile pet groomers might be an option for you. Bringing Your Pet Prior to scheduling an appointment, bring your pet to their office. Observe the relationship between your pet and the groomer. Are they comfortable with each other? Tell your groomer if your dog is sensitive to having his or her nails trimmed or ears cleaned. Some dogs are terrified of the hair dryer. Mentioning it to your groomer help the situation be more successful and less stressful. Choose which services you need before your arrival. Sometimes, groomers who work on commission might try to up sale you. Never let them talk you into services you do not need or want. If you are unhappy with the way your pet looks when you pick it up, speak to the groomer right away. It might be due to miscommunication or your pet’s behavior. Most groomers will be sure to fix the problem to your satisfaction immediately. Remember, you can always change your groomer. If you are uncomfortable or your pet seems stressed, look for a new pet groomer. It is important that you and your pet are satisfied with the groomer’s results.

when it is short and fun for pets and their owners. Dogs do not have long attention spans, so many trainers recommend that practice sessions last no longer than 15 minutes. Commands should be to the point and not clouded with a lot of language. For example, "sit," "stay," "down" and "off" will get the point across. Try practicing the training in different environments and scenarios. This way the dog will behave whether at home or in a friend's backyard. Use rewards that are tied to the event and what the dog may find most attractive at that point. A hungry dog may respond to food treats. A dog looking to play may appreciate a game of catch as a reward. If training doesn't seem to be working, try a few different options. Some pet owners find they need help training their dogs. Classes can be scheduled privately or group classes to interested pet owners. The success rate of training classes and the socialization that these training opportunities offer often justifies the financial and time investments required to attend classes. It can also be very rewarding. Pet owners should know that not all behaviors can be stopped. Rather than punish the dog for every natural behavior, try to find acceptable ways to channel those instincts into something safe. A dog who likes to chew should be given plenty of toys. Dogs who are naturally active should be given adequate amounts of time to run outside. All breeds may benefit from further training in Therapy Dog Work, Canine Good Citizen, Competition Obedience and Agility Training. Most importantly, your dog is a member of your family and training is fun for everyone!

In these economic times, many people are finding out that Credit Unions have a lot to offer. It is a great place to find a financial solution while helping your community. Credit Unions are typically nonprofit organizations owned by their members. They are not owned by individuals or conglomerates and charge less in fees than for-profit banks. Any dividends go to the members instead of shareholders. These days, Credit Unions are a good deal. They usually offer better interest rates on savings accounts and competitive rates on various loans. You might get a fantastic rate on a student loan, mortgage, auto loan or credit card. Also, the federal government stands behind Credit Unions. Most deposits are insured up to $250,000. Selecting the right Credit Union for your needs is not difficult. The first step is to research those in your community and their membership requirements. Some Credit Unions are available only to employees of specific companies, groups of public employees or school employees, however eligibility can be extended to anyone willing to follow their membership requirements. You may be asked to join a food co-op or other organization in order to qualify for membership. A simple Internet search is an excellent starting point. Develop a list of Credit Unions in your area. Then narrow your possibilities by researching eligibility, services offered and fees charged by each Credit Union on your list. It is important to verify the current interest rates on their accounts. If you can’t find the rates online, call and ask the Credit Unions directly for their percentages. Many will be more than glad to help you out with any other questions you may have as well! For example,

SERVICE Because treatment takes time, you should develop a good rapport with your orthodontist. You will also experience some physical discomfort while receiving treatment. That is expected. It is how this professional treats you, and the environment around you that will make a difference. The waiting area should be comforting and soothing. Focus on how the staff treats you and others. Children are the most common type of patients for orthodontists. Watch their reactions closely. If they seem relaxed and comfortable, then you might be in the right place. Look for an orthodontist who knows the value of time. You should not have to wait a long time in the waiting room. Quality orthodontists perform most of the work on your braces themselves. They don't offload it on staff members. You also need someone who can communicate clearly. Listening to questions and answering them clearly is part of their job. You are not just any patient. High quality orthodontists see you as a valued client and treat you as such. Dental assistants are part of the treatment team, so it is

wise to form good relationships with them. They will contribute during the phases of treatment and have undergone rigorous training. These professionals will help you during the process. TECHNOLOGY Ask each prospective orthodontist about the technologies he uses. There are several systems, each quite different from the other. Some methods require more adjustments, and some take longer to do the job. Each professional should explain the trade-offs between one system and another. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Have him explain why he prefers one over the other. Innovations are always happening in the field of orthodontics. One popular option for braces is the Damon system. It doesn't use elastic or metal ties. It is a safe, comfortable and discreet choice that is also healthy. It doesn't attract plaque like older-style braces. CLEAR BRACES Clear braces are a very common choice for people who care about their appearance. Adults, professionals and others can receive treatment without having it hinder their appearance. Invisible braces aren't right for everybody. Clear braces are the next best thing. They work better for people than do clear aligners, a slower straightening technique. If you are interested in clear braces, ask your orthodontist why he or he uses a particular type. It will guide your choice in which system you choose. Orthodontists will also have suggestions on which braces will work best for your situation. This treatment is a significant investment, but you don't have to feel miserable while receiving it. The right mix of education, certification, experience and personality should make all the work worthwhile in the end.

ask about any other requirements on the accounts you are interested in. You might need to use your debit card a certain amount of times each month for certain accounts. The next step is to find out if there are any fees associated with the different types of accounts you want to open. As with traditional savings and loan banks, you might be required to pay a fee if you fall below a minimum balance. If you are in the market for a specific loan, research to see if the loan is issued by the Credit Union. Once you have found several Credit Unions that offer that type of loan, compare interest rates and specials to see who has the best deal. Of course, convenience is something to keep in mind. Check to see what types of online services are offered, weekday and weekend hours, where branches and ATMs are located, etc. You should also understand any fees associated with ATM or debit card usage. If you use ATMs frequently, those charges can add up fast. Another benefit of choosing a Credit Union is the fact that many belong to a network of Credit Unions for shared services. This can mean more access to ATMs and other services in case you move or go on vacation. If you have children attending college in other cities, this can be useful. Once you have completed your research, make a list of the advantages and disadvantages of each Credit Union. You can easily compare them. Upon choosing your Credit Union, visit the branch so you can understand all of the services. Learn more about the benefits of membership. With a little research, you will find that a credit union is a fantastic way to avoid the hassles often experienced from conventional banks.

Buying or selling a home is a huge task and one you want to make sure you accomplish knowing all the rules, regulations and information. When you are buying or selling a home, it is essential to choose the right real estate agent for your needs. The best agents are energetic, positive and proactive. On the other hand, selecting the wrong agent can cost you lots of time and money. So how do you find the best agent for your situation? Here are some ideas to keep in mind. Real Estate Agent vs. Realtor A real estate agent may or may not be a realtor, but every realtor is required to be a licensed real estate agent. To become a realtor, a real estate agent has to join the National Association of Realtors (NAR). This allows him or her to attend industry meetings, get NAR newsletters, and access software and educational tools. Realtors adhere to a strict code of ethics and have solid knowledge of the real estate business. These professionals have been trained well, which means they will provide you with the best service. Where to Start Looking Recommendations are one of the best ways to find a qualified real estate agent or realtor. Ask people in your social network for referrals. Sometimes agents are good at helping clients purchase homes, but not as skilled at selling them. Keep that in mind when searching for the right professional. You might also contact local brokers or search the NAR directory online. Always work with credible, responsible agents. Otherwise you are wasting your time. Comfort Level At the initial consultation with a prospective real estate professional, focus on your comfort level while interacting with

them. Do you get the feeling they are genuinely concerned about your needs? Or are they focused on their commission? Do they know the current housing market? Can they negotiate a contract? It is important that you feel comfortable with the agent. You must trust that this person can behave ethically and help you secure a good deal. Communication and Planning Your agent should be an effective communicator. If you are selling your home, your agent should develop an effective marketing plan, explain it to you, and respond to any questions or concerns you have. The marketing plan will probably involve placing advertisements and conducting open houses to invite the public for home viewings. If you are purchasing a home, the agent should listen to your guidelines and price ranges. Above all, your real estate agent needs to provide updates on progress. Do not work with someone who does not return phone calls or emails. More Resources To get a better idea about the process of buying and selling a home, conduct some research on your own. Real estate magazines contain good information and can be a great way to start your research. There are also a lot of good resources on the Internet, such as www.Realtor.com, which is associated with NAR and which contains free, useful information. You may find housing statistics, market forecasts and tips, but nothing beats the power of networking. You need to find people with similar interests who will help you in your endeavor. Upon successfully buying or selling your home, keep your real estate agent's contact information on hand. You may want to refer other people to him or her. You may also need their services again someday.

The right orthopedic surgeon will help heal injuries to your shoulders, hands, joints or knees. These medical professionals provide help for sports injuries or joint replacements. When you are having a major surgical procedure on your musculoskeletal system, it is essential to find the best medical professional for the job. Time, persistence and research can put you on the right path to recovery. Here are some tips to help you find the best surgeon for your needs. Recommendations Ask your primary care physician for the names of orthopedic surgeons. Your doctor is the best resource for finding a medical professional who can handle your case effectively. Other medical professionals in his practice might also be able to refer you. It is vital that you find a surgeon who specializes in what you need. For example, a man with a sports injury and an elderly person who needs a knee replacement may require two very different doctors. Request information about the surgeon’s background, where he attended medical school and where he did his residency. Many orthopedic specialists become experts at performing one or two types of procedures. Keep in mind that the more experience they have with cases like yours, the more likely you will have a good outcome after the procedure. In addition, family and friends who have had the type of surgery you are considering and were highly satisfied may provide insights that are helpful in making your selection. Philosophy Qualified doctors don’t often share the same philosophy

when it comes to medical treatment. Some surgeons prefer having patients try other options -- such as physical therapy, dietary or lifestyle changes -- before performing surgery. Others think it is wiser to do surgery before a problem gets worse. At your initial consultation with an orthopedic surgeon, try to understand their medical philosophy. Think about whether it matches your expectations. The surgeon should make you feel comfortable and confident. A good bedside manner, with excellent knowledge, experience and communication, will make you feel more relaxed about your health care decisions. Full Spectrum The best surgeons help you with preparation and recovery from your medical treatment. They do more than just perform an actual procedure. They will take the time to answer all your questions patiently and offer practical suggestions to help you hasten your recovery. As well, the doctor will look at your lifestyle to help you become healthier. He will not simply fix your broken or painful body part. Changing your lifestyle and taking better care of yourself may lessen the need for surgery in the future. Hospital Privileges Surgeons must be allowed to operate in facilities. Different hospitals have different levels of technology and equipment. You will want to have the procedure done at a hospital that is equipped to fit your needs. If you prefer to have the surgery performed at a particular hospital, check to make sure the surgeon is approved to operate at the facility.

TIPS FOR BUYING A HOME Buying a home is one of the biggest investments you can make in your life. It is also the most rewarding. These days, purchasing a home can be a stressful experience and there are lots of things to consider. If you are searching for a home lender, you are probably thinking about your financial picture. Everybody has their own idea of finding a perfect interest rate and no or low closing costs. Finding a lender that fits your criteria is as vital as choosing the right home for your situation. Choosing a credit union for your needs may be the best option to explore. As increased lending costs and speculation about big banks continues, many home buyers are bringing their business to local credit unions. Credit unions non-profit status usually offers greater savings which are passed on to their members, and may offer lower rates on loans and other credit products. Many credit unions may have some flexibility in how much they charge, and aim to keep consumer costs low. Lower operating costs often allow these institutions to offer lower interest rates and lower closing costs. While borrowers find that credit unions typically find the same types of services as big banks, credit unions advertise themselves as the best option because of personalized service,

faster closings, and better rates on associated accounts such as savings and CDs. Credit unions also offer a full range of mortgage solutions which can be tailored to suit borrowers’ needs. Conventional 30 and 15 year payment options, adjustable rate mortgages with multiple year payment choices, home equity loans, lines of credit, and home improvement loans can all be obtained through a credit union. In addition, they offer loans for primary, secondary, condominium, and investment property purchases, as well as government backed loans such as FHA and VA loans. To save even more money, credit unions also offer refinancing for existing homeowners as well. Generally, to obtain a loan through a credit union one must be a member, and hold an account with the institution. As always, it is best to shop around to find the best option for financing, and loan approval is based on credit ratings and income standings. Also, credit union membership does not guarantee approval of a loan. Depending on individual specifics, a credit union may be the best fit for your home purchase. Many offer no fee consultations, and can help guide you through the process of realizing your home ownership dreams.

SELECTING THE BEST ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY FOR YOUR NEEDS These days, more Americans are remaining active into their retirement years. They are searching for communities that match their lifestyles and goals for relaxed living. If you are in the market for an assisted living community, there are plenty of things to consider. This assisted living community will hopefully become your home. It is important to choose a vibrant place, with delicious food, compassionate, competent nursing care and recreational activities. Here are some aspects to consider before making a financial commitment to an assisted living community. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES AND PARKING Many seniors want to keep their energy levels up during their retirement years. They are more health conscious and see how an active lifestyle leads to a long life. Many seniors enjoy entertainment, socials, gardening, reading, yoga, exercise and walking. Any prospective assisted living community should have easy access to such activities. Other seniors enjoy arts and crafts, board games, dancing and organized activities. Taking part in a social events can provide opportunities to make new friends. Research what kinds of social events are organized within the assisted living community. Also, find out if the community has ample opportunities for residents to travel to theaters, museums, restaurants or shopping malls together. Parking is another important factor when choosing a retirement community. Most people enjoy having family and friends visit, so parking is a necessity. When parking is tight, visitors will be less likely to come. Do not overlook its importance. EMERGENCY PLANNING Assisted living communities should be easily accessible to emergency personnel. Any prospective community should have a formal emergency plan in place. In addition, check to see if each living unit has custom

safety features, such as railings in the bathrooms, hallways and entranceways.

PET POLICIES Pet policies are another feature to consider when investigating potential assisted living communities. Some communities will allow you to bring your pet to live with you while others will not. So if you have a pet you don’t want to leave behind, you may be able to bring it with you. Many communities now recognize the health benefits of having pets. Additionally, a park or nearby dog walking area will benefit you and your animal companion, particularly if your pet requires daily exercise. Taking a walk each day will benefit both of you.

CHURCHES, LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS Consider how close the community is to schools, sports facilities, and other sites that produce a large amount of traffic volumes and noise levels. Many people prefer to live in less congested, quiet areas during their later years. Also, think about where the nearest libraries and churches are located. Ask whether the community provides its own transportation for residents. Some communities have their own cars, and minivans. It is extremely helpful for seniors who no longer drive and need to do some routine personal shopping.

THE COMMUNITY

Current residents will give you a feel for their level of satisfaction with the community. Talk to them about their experiences and seek candid reviews of the amenities and staff. After all, it is important you feel confident that you have selected an assisted living community that fits your personal needs and lifestyles. By taking the time to research multiple communities, you will undoubtedly find a warm, welcoming new home. You will be able to build lasting friendships and gain the support you need to enjoy life!

If you’re looking to redecorate, using awnings can be a great way to really improve the look and feel of your dhome. They are also a great way to provide some shelter from the elements. Awnings can be a great way to spruce up the windows or doorways to your home or business. The coverings provide shelter from the rain and add value to your wproperty. u Not all awnings are created equal, and not all stores gcarry all the great brands and styles. f Here are a few ideas to help you in your search for awnings.

d .

STRONG PRODUCTS Materials are one of the first things to consider when purchasing an awning. The shade will be exposed to harsh sunlight, hot summers, frigid winters and rain dstorms. Making correct decisions at the beginning can ssave you time and money down the road. Awnings made of quality materials and durable frames ehave a better chance of lasting for years. A cheaper awning may last for only a year or two. r The best awnings will have water-repellant fabric. tPopular choices include woven acrylic or laminated fabric. Colors and designs vary according to each company; however, the awning should come with a firm warranty. Consider asking companies for a fabric and color sample. The product should also have a sturdy, rust-proof nframe. It will need to be solid enough to withstand gusts kof wind and light enough not to look bulky. Of course, the entire product should complement nyour home or building's architecture. Awnings come in a .variety of styles. If a company doesn't have the style you lneed, look elsewhere. o Also, if you can see examples of awning materials that have been in place for several years, that's the best way

to judge their ability to withstand Mother Nature. See for yourself how much it has faded or frayed. RETRACTABLE AWNINGS One of the most popular trends in recent years is the retractable awning. You can extend them at your convenience. They can block the sun on a sweltering day. You can also retract the awning in the winter so snow doesn't collect on the material. Depending on the models, these awnings can also last longer than fixed versions. Rolling them away when not in use means they stay out of the sun and aren't whipped around as much by the wind. Retractable awnings require special care and attention. You must wash them regularly and allow them to dry before retracting. SERVICE, EXPERIENCE Finally, you need to make sure you are working with a reputable, experienced installer. Your neighborhood handy person or family member might be able to install your awning, but there is a possibility you will not like the results. It is much better to find someone who has installed awnings for a living preferably with a good track record. Don't be afraid to ask for references from previous customers. Poor installation can ruin the exterior look of your building. Awnings are a specialized product that requires specific knowledge for the best result. The best awning companies will offer in-depth knowledge about their products. They can also inform you how to best care for your awning. Reputable awning companies provide excellent service before, during and long after the installation, helping you make the most of your investment.

If public schools are not for you and your children, you might want to consider a private school. Parents send their children to private schools for many reasons. Ultimately, it is because they want what is best for their children. They believe a private school will help their children succeed. Choosing the right private school may seem like a daunting decision. After all, an educational institution can help or hinder your child. The task becomes less daunting when you take the appropriate measures, do research and ask the right questions. The following tips will help you determine the right school for your child. Your first step is evaluating your child's educational goals and needs. Does he have natural gifts you are seeking to nurture? Are there physical or learning disabilities or behavioral issues that should be addressed? Has your child voiced an interest in science, math, sports or music? Ask for referrals from your child's current school, teachers, guidance counselors, family and friends. This should give you a solid beginning. Now, consider what an ideal school would offer. Make a list of these features. Will your child attend a local day school or boarding school? Are there travel or budgetary restrictions? Are extracurricular activities, such as sports, band, art or debate club important? Conduct some research on the Internet for schools that have these features. Most sites will have plenty of information as well as policy summaries. Look at photo galleries and videos. Some sites may even give virtual tours of the facilities. Think about your child's daily commute to school. Are there suitable transportation options? After looking at these considerations, you can now make a "short list" of schools. It will consist of institutions

that fit your criteria. Ask your child for his or her opinion about these schools. Talk it over to decide which ones are best. When the list is complete, it is time to narrow it down even further. Determine entrance requirements and ensure your child meets them before contacting a particular school. Make a list of general questions along with a subset of specific questions for each school. Then start contacting the institutions. If their answers are satisfactory, make an appointment to visit them. While there, inquire about the enrollment paperwork and any testing your child will have to complete. Check out the atmosphere of the school. Is it relaxed or competitive? Is there structure and discipline, or is it more free-flowing? Most importantly, will your child feel comfortable there? Be aware of how you are treated by the staff members. They will be dealing with your child throughout the day. Are they friendly, helpful and respectful? Try to meet as many of the staff and teachers as you can. Imagine your family engaging in school activities. Is it easy to picture your child spending them there? If your child accompanies you to these appointments, ask him or her about the school. Children often have special insights and reactions to environments. After all tours are complete, review your findings. You should be able to start eliminating schools. Now that you have seen the school, asked questions and met the staff, you can also develop a better understanding of the financial cost of each school. Ask about financial aid, if needed. With diligence and forethought, you should be able to apply to the school of your choice and have your child happily accepted.

How to Choose a Gold Buyer

How to choose a handgun

In the past few years, interest in gold has increased sharply. A growing number of Americans are rummaging through their house looking for broken gold jewelry. Selling gold necklaces, rings and other items has become a common way to get quick cash. Whether economic times are good or bad, people often use precious metals to shelter their money. But this popular trend has been accompanied by less scrupulous experts who lack experience in determining the proper value of these items. Many pieces of jewelry might be worth more than their gold content or melt value. Anyone can make a mistake, but fly-by-night operators will often offer far less than the melt value of the gold in these items. They are counting on your lack of knowledge. Infomercials have also flooded the airwaves with ploys offering "immediate cash for your unwanted gold." But mailing gold in flimsy prepaid envelopes to these dealers is the same as dropping cash into the mail. Always exercise caution when selling gold. While many buyers are honest and reputable, finding them requires research. Here are some tips to help you get the most money from selling your unwanted gold. First, do some research to determine the gold content of an item. Remember that gold is soft, so it must be alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness and durability. Jewelry usually has an inscription identifying the purity of its gold content. For instance, 24-karat gold

There is nothing more important than firearm safety. Learning about the different types, safe handling and storage of firearms is a first step to ownership and should occur prior to any purchases or shooting. These are integral parts of becoming a responsible firearm owner. The following questions provide a basic overview and suggested resources to enhance your firearm learning experience.

contains 99.9 percent gold. It is measured in terms of a troy ounce, equal to about 1.097 avoirdupois ounces, the kind of ounce we use in measuring butter, flour and body weight. One troy ounce of 14-karat gold contains 14/24th troy ounce of the pure metal. Next, take your gold items to reputable jewelers in your area for their opinion. A jeweler may charge a small fee for this service. It is the best way to establish the gold content when the piece lacks markings. Take it to more than one jeweler to verify the findings. The Better Business Bureau and the Internet are valuable sources of information about gold buyers. Poor dealers usually leave a pile of complaints from disgruntled sellers whom they've allegedly cheated. Do not deal with these companies. Also, if a gold buyer operates from their home or business unrelated to precious metals, be careful. They probably don't have enough experience to provide an accurate evaluation of your items. It pays to use a local business. If you must mail your gold items, insure the package and use registered mail available at the United States Postal Service. You could use a shipper that offers package tracking and delivery verification. Do not trust someone you don't know and have never met. Learn as much as you can before visiting a gold dealer. Information is your ally. There are reputable gold buyers doing business today, and they will pay you for the true value of your piece. Doing the proper research and taking precautions will help you find the best people doing business today.

What are basic firearm safety guidelines?

Firearm safety is serious business. These are my top guidelines for firearm owners and users. 1. Always point the gun in a safe direction; 2. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire; 3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use; 4. Keep all firearms in a secure and locked location. I’m interested in firearms, where do I start? First, become informed. You can purchase a shooting magazine at your local bookstore: “Shooting” and “Guns” are two examples. Next, browse the Internet; it’s critical to evaluate the site prior to trusting the information: who is the author? What experience do they have? What biases are evident? Beginning on the National Rifle Association’s webpage, NRA.org, is a wise start; you’ll find multiple, credible sources on their page. Speaking to people who have firearm qualifications is another great first step. Stop in a local gun store to ask questions. Finally, you can find and take classes through the NRA’s website, taught by local instructors. The key takeaway for this section is to make sure you seek out and learn the critical foundational knowledge needed to be a responsible firearm owner.

Which firearm is right for me?

This question can only be answered when you know what your purpose for owning a firearm is. Are you interested in sport shooting? Personal protection? Work purposes? Depending on your intention, your choice will be different. Once that decision is made, you can determine what is best for you.

What are the different types of firearms?

There are 3 major types of firearms: handguns, rifles and shotguns. Handguns come in two major types; revolvers and semi- automatic pistols. A revolver has a cylinder that holds the rounds and rotates each time you take a shot. They typically hold five or six rounds and are often

purchased for home defense and sport shooting. A semi-automatic pistol will fire each time you pull the trigger, the rounds are held in a magazine, and are typically used for law enforcement, sport shooting, home defense, and legally carrying a concealed firearm. Rifles and shotguns are considered long guns. Rifles are typically used for hunting and sport shooting, while shotguns are used for sport shooting and home defense. All of these firearms have different uses and are not strictly used as mentioned above. Each type of firearm requires a different skill level, which can be learned as you gain experience.

What criteria should I consider when purchasing a firearm?

The key criteria for purchasing a firearm include: legality, purpose, cost and comfort. Legality: You should always purchase a firearm legally. The process includes paperwork, a background check, and wait time. Illegal purchases of firearms can lead to negative consequences such as jail time. Learn more about the process by visiting a local, knowledgeable dealer. Also, make sure you understand the local laws involving firearms. Ignorance is not a justifiable excuse. Purpose: Consider your purpose for buying a firearm. Refer to How Do I Know Which Firearm is Right for Me. Cost: New guns vary in price based on the make and model and can range anywhere from $150-$300,000. Secondhand firearms are also an option, but you should comparison shop to ensure a fair purchase price. Comfort: You wouldn’t buy an uncomfortable pair of running shoes and the same is true for firearms. Heavy or cumbersome firearms should not be purchased. Firearms are serious. Feeling secure when handling your firearm must be a consideration. Those new to firearms may be uncomfortable initially but with experience preferences will naturally happen. There are public indoor ranges to visit and rent guns you want to try. This option is great for determining preferences without having to purchase them first. By now, you know firearm basics. The imperative ideas to take from this “Ask the Expert” piece are 1) knowledge is key – research before making a decision to purchase; 2) follow the law – while it may take extra time, legally purchasing a firearm is the right thing to do; and 3) safety – you can never take too many precautions with firearm safety.

How do you choose the right school for you or your child? Or, perhaps you are having doubts about the school where you are currently enrolled? There are many things to consider when deciding WHERE, and WHO to put your trust in to learn martial arts. There are some excellent martial arts schools out there. However, the “business” of martial arts has become the obsession with many schools across the country. There are some schools that are more concerned with finding ways to take your money than with teaching. Before you call any martial arts academy, decide what is the goal for you/your child. The most common benefits of martial arts are: self-defense, confidence, physical fitness, losing weight, and increased self-discipline. Once you have determined your goals, do a little research and find out about the martial arts offered in your area. There is a vast difference between the various styles of martial arts. Some will be better suited for you than others. Don’t just go to the school that is closest or the first one you call. If you wanted to buy a car would you go to any showroom and purchase the first vehicle you saw? Not likely Check the instructor’s credentials. If they are vague or not even listed, this may be a “red flag”. The Six Red Flags If you visit a martial arts school where some, or all of the following apply, you might want to continue looking. They seem more focused on taking my money than teaching Karate. Are there fees for every little thing? If so, do you feel they are reasonable? Are there extra fees to learn weapons or sparring? Do they charge more if you want to become an instructor? A martial arts school is a business, they can charge as much as they want for anything, but make sure you are comfortable with the expenses associated with your training. Cleanliness Is the facility clean? Are there any odors when you walk in the door? If the first thing you notice when you arrive is the smell of unclean rugs or mats, it may say that the school isn’t sanitary. Would you want to practice rolls (or do pushups) on a gross mat?

Is this Karate or Gymnastics? Does the class you are watching look more like a gymnastics class or a martial arts class? (Naturally, there is nothing wrong with doing gymnastics, it is an excellent activity) Watch the students in the class and be sure you like what they are doing. Remember, the martial arts are about learning personal protection. Do the students look like they are practicing a style that looks effective? The Instructors Are the instructors physically fit themselves? Are they clean and well groomed? Are the instructors beating up on the students? Is it like a military boot camp? Does it seem like the class is engaged in activities that seem reckless? Big down payments? Long term (3+ years) membership contracts? Are you agreeable to thousands of dollars up front and lengthy agreements? For some people, this is quite a commitment. Be sure you are comfortable with this before you sign. The 9 year old Black Belt. This is a hot topic with martial artists all over the world. Many schools will promote children to Black Belt at the age 9 (and in some cases even younger). You need to decide if you agree with this or not when choosing a martial arts school. There is a school out there for everyone. Do some research in order to make an informed decision. Be sure you know how the school you are interested in does business. There are no government regulations for martial arts (yet), If they say they studied under a particular Master, check it out. Go to that Master’s website and see if the they are listed. Email/contact the Master and verify the school owner’s credentials. If you are happy with your research for a particular school, the next step is to give them a call. They may not discuss price, but should be willing to at least give some information on the phone. If during your phone conversation, you feel like you are being pressured with cheap sales tactics, move on! If you are happy with what they tell you, schedule a visit to watch a class.

How to choose a veterinarian Most people think of their pets as members of their family. In fact, some people even refer to their pets as children. That’s why finding the proper veterinarian is so important. You need to find quality care and a good relationship to ensure the long-term health of your pet and value for your dollar. The quality of care within the veterinary profession has improved dramatically in the past twenty years and we now closely parallel human medicine in our abilities to care for your pet. However, despite these advancements in veterinary medicine, Sadly, there is inadequate state and federal regulation to uphold these newer standards of care in our profession. As a result, you must be careful when choosing a veterinarian because you will find enormous variations on how a veterinarian practices from hospital to hospital, especially here in Rhode Island. The education and job description for a veterinarian today is vastly different than it was one generation ago so it is important for you to be an educated consumer and active advocate for your pet’s health. Choosing a good veterinarian that suits you and your pet’s needs, who also practices the most current standards of care, can be a difficult task. However, if you follow these guidelines, you should be able to find a veterinarian that will give you and your pet the best care possible. 1) Ask for referrals. Your family and friends may know a good veterinarian. Listen to their experiences. You need to find someone who is professional and compassionate with a good reputation. However, don’t stop there. 2) Research on the Internet. Most veterinarians that maintain a high standard of care for their patients also have a high regard for their internet presence. Visit their website. Is it informative and professional? Is the information current? Are different areas of their hospital proudly displayed? (Reception, Exam rooms, Surgery, Treatment, and Animal Areas) Next, Do they have good online reviews? (Google, Yahoo, Yelp, Angie’s List to name a few) If there are any complaints, are they valid or just venting? Has the practice responded to these negative reviews in a professional manner? 3) Make a phone call. Call the hospitals you are considering and ask about their services. Take note of how the receptionist

handles your call. Were they friendly and informative? Quality practices will try to place their best people on the “front lines” so you can learn much about the practice from their phone representation. 4) Make a visit. Schedule a visit to the hospital. You should see a well-maintained exterior and a clean, comfortable, “odor free” interior. Observe how the staff interacts with clients and their pets. Are they warm for the animals and owners? Ask if you can ask to meet one of the doctors. They may be busy, and you may have to wait a bit, but most doctors will be able to take a minute to say hello to a prospective new client. While you’re waiting, make yourself comfortable and introduce yourself to other clients. Find out if they are happy with the services and staff. If you are made to feel uncomfortable during your visit, get negative “vibes”, or are unhappy with the facility, consider taking your services elsewhere. 5) American Animal Hospital Association Accreditation (AAHA). Veterinary hospitals with this voluntary distinction have passed a rigorous evaluation and inspection demonstrating their practice of the highest standards in veterinary care. Visit www. aaha.org to find out more information on accreditation and to search for other accredited hospitals in your area. 6) Be careful when “price shopping”. Veterinary care for your pet should be within your budget. However, if the cost of services between two hospitals varies greatly, do your homework and make sure you are comparing “apples to apples” by asking educated questions, especially regarding anesthesia, dentistry, and difficult medical cases. If you are cost conscious or on a budget, consider pet insurance rather than going with the “cheapest” service. With the vast differences in quality of care in our profession, your pet will often get what you pay for. The bottom line is that your pet’s health is a cooperative effort between you and your veterinarian. Finding the best veterinarian for you and your pet will take time. Doing the appropriate research and educating yourself about the latest veterinary standards of care are the best ways to help you find the perfect fit for you and your furry, feathered, or scaly friend and ensure they are with you for years to come.

So you've found the house of your dreams and can't wait to buy it and move in? Be careful and don't move too quickly. But finding the right mortgage lender can be time-consuming. The key is to take as much time as necessary to do things properly. You must also make sure you are dealing with quality lenders. Lenders with excellent customer service can make things go smoothly. But if your lender is only concerned with his or her bottom line or making extra money on selling loan products, use caution. The best mortgage professionals are knowledgeable about their loan products. They are willing to spend as much time as possible to explain them to you. They take pride in guiding you through what could be a confusing process. They keep your best interests and financial priorities in mind. Do some advance research on your loan options prior to meeting a mortgage professional. It will help you determine whether he or she is truly concerned about your needs. Basic knowledge about the financing process will help you make a sound assessment about a mortgage lender's skills and abilities. PURCHASER'S RIGHTS The mountain of forms, declarations and even financial terminology can be daunting to inexperienced homebuyers. It is always smart to exercise care during the home-buying process. Understand what you are signing and any obligations you are assuming. A signature is a permanent commitment. Some buyers may have a very short time to back out. Otherwise, they are liable for what is in the document. Even if you back out during that short period, you will

likely forfeit deposits because you broke the deal. You might also owe an additional amount based on the total of the initial mortgage payment. Extra costs can be avoided if you take time when signing all agreements. If a lender is rushing you through paperwork and pressuring you to sign the form, he is not doing his job properly. Your best interests are likely to be neglected. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR LENDER The best mortgage lenders will focus on understanding your long-range financial goals. They will ask you how long you intend to remain in this new home. Your answers will help him find the best mortgage products to suit your needs. It is a red flag if a lender fails to ask you this type of question. SEEK LOCAL LENDERS Seeking out a mortgage lender in your community is the best option. Interest rates vary on a daily basis. A local lender will know the rapid changes happening in the community's housing market. They will understand how these changes may affect you. Local lenders can monitor your loan application closely, and will be more accessible to answer any questions you may have. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PERSONAL REFERRALS Ask your friends and family about their experience with mortgage lenders. They may be comfortable recommending the same professionals they used for their home loans. Word-of-mouth is often the best way to identify quality professionals in your area. Once you have a list of possibilities, verify their backgrounds so you can will confident in their ability to help you.

How to Choose a Produce Department How to Choose a Florist Doctors and dietitians agree; fruits and vegetables are fantastic for your health. They can satisfy a sugar craving. Raw vegetables can help fill an empty stomach. When you want to lose weight, there is no better meal than a colorful salad. Perhaps you think all produce departments are the same, but they don't have the same selections. The best departments are adept at purchasing, storing and presenting produce creatively while preserving its nutrient content. Selecting quality produce doesn't have to be difficult. Here are suggestions to help you find the best produce department in your area. Freshness Freshness is the most important factor when shopping for produce. When produce travels across the country -- from the field to the store shelf -- it takes time. Each day on the road takes away flavor and freshness. It loses texture and taste. Companies contend with this problem in many ways. They refrigerate the produce at a certain temperature. They try to shorten the transport time. Nevertheless, the highest quality produce will come from your closest farms. Buying locally helps your neighbors. Buying produce in season is also a way to ensure freshness. For example, apples are harvested in the fall and succulent tomatoes are best in the summer. These items are picked right before they are fully ripe. By comparison, purchasing apples in the spring means they will be held in storage for almost a year. They will lose their juiciness and texture. Produce grown in a greenhouse is usually very expensive. It isn’t always easy choosing fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness. Produce department employees can guide you. They should be happy to provide recommendations on apples, greens, tomatoes and pineapples that will work best in your recipes. Variety Variety is another aspect to consider when choosing a produce department. You should have access to a wide selection that provides opportunities to experiment when cooking. Some pumpkins are fabulous for pies while others are strictly for

decoration. One red pepper variety is wonderful in a sautéed dish while another is best eaten raw. Fruits look alike, but there are significant differences in flavor and juiciness. Having a wide selection also means you can try new produce and develop a better palate. Taste-testing new foods is fun. You may develop new favorites in your produce aisle. It is a healthy way to treat yourself well. Locally Grown Food Many shoppers opt to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables. It is better for the economy and environment. Shipping it from orchard or field doesn’t require much fuel for transportation. As a result, you get better tasting produce and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Organic Organic produce is one of the most popular options these days. Grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers, organic foods are a good choice for anyone looking to improve their overall health. Sometimes, this produce tastes better than their chemically assisted counterpart because they require more attention from the grower. People often complain that organic foods are more costly, but its increasing popularity has helped bring its price down. Good produce departments offer organic and non-organic produce with no significant price difference. In this way, healthier eating can fit most budgets. Time Savers Americans don’t have a lot of time for preparing produce. You can save time by purchasing fruits and vegetables already sliced and diced. Traditional bagged salads, veggies trays, sliced apples are now easy snacks. Wrapped potatoes and pre-seasoned skillet vegetables can go straight from a bag to your stovetop. New types of produce are being developed all the time, so look for a produce department that carries these foods.

Flowers have a lot to say, and they say a lot about the person giving them or the event they are decorating. A bouquet is the perfect gift for a housewarming, wedding, corporate dinner or birthday party. A beautiful arrangement creates a happy and celebratory atmosphere. It brightens up a room. Getting just the right flower arrangement is the key to your success. A professional florist will know how to make the colors, types of flowers and even scent work for your occasion. Research the Florist If you are purchasing a floral arrangement for an event, ask the venue staff for recommendations. They are often familiar with the best florists in the area. Popular florists are usually quite busy year-round, so begin the process right away. Family and friends may also have suggestions. Be sure to ask them for their experiences, as well as how much they paid for the services. Call each florist to check their availability. If a florist is unavailable, scratch them off your list. Meanwhile, determine your flower budget. It will be a factor in your decision-making process. Also, look for floral arrangements in magazines. Clip out your favorite photos and put them in a notebook. Put a note about why you like these particular flowers. Once you have a list of florists who are available, visit their shops and interview them. Interview the Florist Observe the shop when you get there. Are the pathways clear of plants, tools and debris? Is the staff friendly and warm? The answers to these questions will help you understand each shop's level of customer service and care they give to their products. All plants and flowers should be well-maintained and

attractively arranged. Employees should be attentive. The best florists have a wide range of options in their showroom. During the interview, ask if the florist has previously worked at your venue. Each facility has unique rules about what they will allow in their location. If the florist has worked at the venue, that is a big advantage. They will know and can adhere to the rules. Inform the florist of your budget and ask for recommendations. The florist should be able to give you numerous suggestions about flower arrangements. Most florists have a scrapbook of their previous work. Each professional brings a sense of personal style to her arrangements. Be sure to show the florist your notebook. Discuss the arrangements you prefer. Perhaps the florist could produce similar arrangements. If you are holding a large event, the florist might have recommendations about other event professionals. Once you have chosen your florist, be certain to confirm the type of arrangements you will receive. You should also know when the arrangements will arrive at the venue and who is responsible for placing the flowers in the appropriate spots. Confirm when payment is expected. Understand the floral contract before signing anything.

Get it in Writing When you are pleased with a company's work, you might assist the shop with providing positive references and reviews. A professional florist will help you go a long way toward establishing the right environment for your event. The vivid colors and pleasant aroma will convey the right feeling for your special day. It takes a team to work a large event. A friendly, wellestablished relationship between your caterer and florist is especially important.
