While sidelined during the pandemic last year, these two step-sisters and like-minded fans of tea (and all things related to tea!) got creative and brewed up an idea which sprang to life, unsurprisingly, in the form of sweet tea! Together, they created East Greenwich’s cozy and welcoming Tea Bar & Gathering Space, aptly named “Spill the Tea.” Today, Madie and Talia have brought what has traditionally been a drink reserved for an “older crowd” to a new generation. Tea has been given a new life here at Spill the Tea where people of all ages and persuasions are invited to come and linger over a cup of hot tea, a tall glass of chilled iced tea or even a mug of locally-roasted coffee! Spill the Tea is home to a large variety of locally-baked confections, hand-selected teas, richly blended coffees and even hand-crafted gifts. Be sure to check out the incoming “fall collections” in the shop’s new “Emporium” (a craft-lovers haven which also happens to be the tea shop’s dining room). A: This elephant is swinging the clock, but there doesn’t seem to be anything making it move. That is why it is known as a swinger or mystery clock. It is 11 inches tall.

The first “mystery clock” was made by a French magician, Jean Robert-Houdin, in 1845. Many other versions followed. Junghans, a German clock factory, made most of those seen today. Ansonia, an American clock company, also made these unusual clocks. The secret clock parts that kept the hands moving were even patented. The trick is that part of the base moves around slightly, keeping the pendulum swinging and moving the clock’s hands. Another type of mystery clock was made with two clear crystal disks with a clock hand painted on each. The disks turned with power from the base. Many copies of antique mystery clocks have been made. The model with an elephant swinging the clock is a favorite that was originally made by Junghans, but has been copied in China. Surprisingly, the original had an elephant made of white metal,

It might sell at a garage sale, but it’s easier just to donate it to a charity. The fact of the matter is, having and keeping annual meetings with your primary care provider is essential to maintaining long-term good health and living a longer, happier, better quality of life. Primary care providers responsible for managing your health throughout your lifetime are the backbone of today’s healthcare system. While it may seem redundant to have your weight, blood pressure, eyes, hearing, and reflexes checked every time you visit your primary care provider, these routine health screenings can help your doctor and you identify any health issues or concerns early on before something becomes either a nuisance or

worse, a life-threatening problem. Early detection for any condition or illness can potentially save you from discomfort, physical pain, and suffering, or even death. And, with early detection, your doctor can prevent you from spending unnecessary money on treatments. Now, for her 9th birthday, she wants a kitten. I feel that she’s old enough to care for a cat, but am worried that the cat will stress her goldfish. What are your thoughts? — Judy G., Seattle DEAR JUDY: As a parent, your instincts are important and this one is worth thinking about. Cats are fascinated with fish tanks and can often be found watching the fish inside with rapt attention — if not actively trying to get a paw into the water. Discuss your concerns with your daughter. At age 9, she’s old enough to consider this problem as well. Is there a way for her goldfish to remain healthy and stress-free while bringing a kitten into your home? There are strategies for doing this successfully, including training that diverts a cat’s attention from the tank and placing the tank out of sight or reach of the cat. Caring for pets is a way to help children develop empathy for all living things. It can help them learn about responsibility, too — but only when parents are actively involved in the process. You’re doing a great job of helping your daughter understand the importance of caring for pets of all kinds. Having second thoughts about bringing another pet into the house is exactly the kind of thinking parents should do.
